Believers celebrate the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary on August 28. What you can and cannot do on holiday

One of the main Orthodox holidays, the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is celebrated by believers on August 28. A correspondent of the Minsk-Novosti agency found out what can and cannot be done on this day.

Origins of the holiday

The Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary is the day of the passing away of the Holy Virgin Mary. This church holiday is preceded by a strict two-week Assumption Fast, which began on Honey Savior.

As church tradition says, after the Savior’s ascension into heaven, the Mother of God lived in the house of Christ’s beloved disciple, Apostle John the Theologian. One day she came to the Holy Sepulcher on Calvary and saw the Archangel Gabriel there. He told her that after three days the earthly life of the Mother of God would end and she would ascend to Jesus in the Kingdom of Heaven to remain there with Him forever. As a sign of the Virgin Mary's victory over death and decay, the archangel gave the Virgin Mary a branch of the paradise date tree, which remained in her hands after the vision ended.

Through the prayer of the Mother of God, almost all the apostles who were in distant countries miraculously gathered in Jerusalem for her Dormition, with the exception of Thomas. The Virgin Mary said goodbye to the disciples of her Son, and then a sudden light illuminated the room, and Jesus himself, surrounded by angels, archangels and the souls of the Old Testament righteous, came down to his mother. The Mother of God left this world without any bodily suffering, as if falling asleep. Therefore, the church calls the death of the Mother of God the Dormition, that is, falling asleep.

Signs and traditions

After the Assumption, Indian summer begins. If the weather is clear and sunny on the holiday, it will be cool.

A rainbow after rain on this day foreshadows a warm and long autumn.

Cobwebs on trees are a sign of a frosty winter with little snow.

Fog on Assumption promises a bountiful harvest of mushrooms this year.

On the day of the holiday, walking barefoot on the ground means collecting illnesses, and cutting your hair means walking in tears.

What to do on Assumption

Traditionally, for the holiday, pies are baked from new harvest flour and dinner is organized for relatives and neighbors, but without noisy celebrations and alcohol.

On this day, it is recommended to read prayers to the Blessed Virgin Mary, for example, “Rejoice to the Virgin Mary,” and visit the temple.

On such a day, it is very important not to hold a grudge against anyone, forgive people for their weaknesses and try to maintain peace and tranquility in your soul.

What not to do on Assumption

The Church teaches that on the day of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary there are no special prohibitions. However, it is worth considering that this year the holiday falls on Wednesday, and according to church regulations, this is a fast day - it is allowed to eat fish, but not meat.

People believed that on the day of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary one should not walk barefoot in the dew, since drops of moisture on the grass symbolized the tears of the Virgin Mary. They said that those who wet their feet with such dew would face troubles and failures.

On the day of the Assumption, you should not wear uncomfortable, old shoes, otherwise this person will be accompanied by difficulties all year long

Legends and writings

Everything that people know about the death of the Mother of the Savior is taken from Christian Tradition. Christian records indicate nothing about how or during what circumstances the Mother of God joined God and was buried. Tradition is one of the main sources of Orthodox teaching, just like Holy Scripture.

From the New Testament you can find out that Jesus asked his closest and beloved apostle John to take care of his mother. After the crucifixion of the Savior, the Mother of God, together with her disciples, was in fasting and prayer. On the day of the Descent of the Holy Spirit on the disciples, she also received this gift.

In written sources of the 4th century one can find references to how the Virgin Mary lived in the future. Many writings indicate that she was taken from worldly earth to Heaven. It happened like this. 3 days before the death of the Mother of God, Angel Gabriel appeared and announced the future Assumption. She was then in Jerusalem. Everything happened exactly as predicted.

After the death of Mary, the apostles buried her in Gethsemane, where the tomb of her parents and husband, St. Joseph, was located. Everyone was present at the burial, with the exception of Jesus’ disciple, Thomas. 3 days after the burial, Thomas came to see the site of the tomb. They opened it, but Mary’s body was missing—only the shroud remained.

The Baptism of Rus' and the spread of Christianity

Vladimir was a prince whose deeds earned respect and respect from the people. He cared about the prosperity of Rus', the security of his lands, and at the same time did everything to ensure that the Russian world developed both culturally and spiritually.

Vladimir saw great prospects in Christianity according to the Greek rite, while he sent back the envoys of the Pope.

The Baptism of Rus' also had external (political) circumstances. The Byzantine emperors Vasily and Constantine turned to the prince with a plea for help. Rebel commanders did not give Constantinople peace, laying claim to the great throne. For many years and generations, Byzantine rulers used Christianization tactics with enemy states. To win their enemies over to their side, they called them to Christianity. The first attempts at this were made back in the ninth century, i.e. a hundred years before the reign of Vladimir. It so happened that this alliance was beneficial both on the part of the Byzantines and on the part of the Russian prince.

But Vladimir had his own conditions: he agreed to help his brother-emperors in exchange for a marriage with their sister. In order to marry Anna before God, Vladimir was baptized and sent his troops to help the Greeks. But Konstantin and Vasily deceived him. They didn't want to give up their sister. Then Vladimir was forced to capture the Greek port on the Black Sea (Korsun), which caused terrible damage to the economy and trade of the empire, already exhausted by the war. Only after this did the emperors yield to the Grand Duke and release their sister. In addition to his wife and new faith, Vladimir in 988 acquired the royal title and symbols of imperial power: the royal crown and the scepter crowned with a cross.

The Grand Duke and his newly-made wife moved from Crimea to Kyiv, and their procession was accompanied by a religious procession and prayer services. Having reached the princely city, Vladimir announced to all the people of Kiev: whoever does not come to the Dnieper in the morning for Baptism will be his enemy. No one dared to contradict the prince.

So one of the days at the end of July became a turning point for Rus', signifying the spiritual birth of a new people. Pagan beliefs did not disappear from Russian soil overnight, but the vector of history turned in a completely different direction (towards the path of the spiritual victory of Christianity).

Day of Equal-to-the-Apostles Grand Duke Vladimir

As we mentioned earlier, Vladimir’s grandmother was Princess Olga, the first Russian ruler to convert to the Orthodox faith, abandoning paganism. This woman went down in history thanks to her unbending character. She ruled Russia with a strong hand, in no way inferior to her husbands. Since childhood, we have known about Olga’s campaign against the Drevlyans. She took revenge on the Drevlyans for the treacherous murder of her husband Igor. She returned to Kyiv not alone, but with captives (the children of the Drevlyan prince Mal). Mal's daughter, Malusha, was Olga's housekeeper, and together with her ruler she accepted Christianity.

Svyatoslav Igorevich, Olga’s son, wanted to make Malusha his wife. Olga protested against such a marriage, because the captive and daughter of the enemy was no match for the young prince. Svyatoslav disobeyed his mother’s will and took Malusha as his wife. For this, Olga sent the girl to the native lands of the Drevlyans. It was there that the future Grand Duke was born. Vladimir, even by name, was destined in the future to become the great ruler of a special world.

He had to overcome a long way before he became the great baptist of Rus'. Initially he reigned in Novgorod. After the death of Svyatoslav, civil strife began between his children. While Yaropolk and Oleg were fighting for the Kiev throne, Vladimir acted smarter. He went to the homeland of his grandfather, Igor, to the Varangian lands. According to legend, he gathered an army there, and then moved to Novgorod, where Yaropolk’s protege reigned. First, Vladimir the Red Sun captured his native principality, then Polotsk. The Kiev throne submitted to the Grand Duke in 978, and a memorable era began in the history of the Russian world.

It is noteworthy that Vladimir initially began his path with the worship of the pagan heresy. Chroniclers testify that the prince was overcome by fornication and sins. Vladimir reformed the pagan faith in opposition to the actions of his brother, Yaropolk, who sympathized with Catholicism and wanted to bring it to Russian land. Pagan polytheism was not to the advantage of Vladimir, who sought to unite all the principalities into a single state, subjugated to a single ruler. Envoys of many faiths came to Vladimir, but he chose only true Orthodoxy as the path for Rus'.

Prayer to Our Lady

According to Christian tradition, the Mother of God was able to reach the highest limit of holiness on earth. In the apocryphal writings there is a lot of evidence about miracles associated with the Virgin Mary, but the main thing is the enormous faith that she had.

The Heavenly Lady prays for all people, helping them on earth , asking for everyone, from the sinner to the righteous. Therefore, you need to pray in front of the icon of the Mother of God for any reason, the believer will immediately feel how this prayer helps, and others can receive spiritual help and strengthen their faith.
