Since ancient times, it has been customary in Orthodoxy to make requests to the Almighty in different life situations. To make it easier to find the right words to address, Orthodox Christians have come up with quite a few special petitions. One of the most popular is the akathist to the saints. But before reading it, you need not only to receive the blessing of the holy father, but also to know how to properly prepare for it. For this purpose, before reading the akathist, a special prayer is read. Not many novice believers know what prayers to read before reading the akathist. It is very important to understand that this type of petition is read not only in churches, but also at home. Therefore, for such cases, it would not be superfluous to purchase an Orthodox prayer book. He will become the first assistant in choosing the right petition before and after reading the akathist.
How to read Akathist correctly
Since ancient times, the Orthodox world has resorted to the help of God, the Mother of God, saints, or on the occasion of a church holiday. For this purpose, Christians have composed a special prayer rule, a hymn of praise - an akathist. There is also a special order for reading it. Today you can order it in any functioning church (submit a note about your health, which will be read by the priest). However, sometimes believers want, in addition to general church prayer, to perform special prayer at home. It is the akathist that can be read at home, without the participation of clergy. The latter often even recommend that their parishioners and spiritual children read one or another akathist at home.
As often happens, not everyone has a confessor. And there’s simply no one physically able to ask about the rule for reading the akathist at home. And there are many questions. For example, what to read before the akathist and is it necessary at all? So here's what you need to know: there is a rule established by the Church for reading the akathist. These are prayers before reading the akathist itself and after its completion. The initial prayers before the akathist are usually read standing, just like the akathist himself. Indeed, translated from Greek, akathist is “singing without sitting down.” But if a person, due to poor health, finds it difficult to stand on his feet, he can sit down.

In addition, the akathist is a rather lengthy prayerful praise. And many may have a question: why are initial prayers needed before reading the akathist? Isn't he enough of himself? However, prayers before the akathist have a beneficial effect on the person praying. A person tunes in to long, attentive heartfelt prayer. He seems to be warming up, kindling his heart with the praise of God. But only then do the Lord and the saints hear us when we turn sincerely, with all our hearts and with sincere faith, and not mechanically muttering a dry text under our breath. Such an attitude will not be heard from above, and there may even be punishment. Prayer is the one that is from the heart, not on the lips.
The initial prayer serves as a foretaste of joy. It’s not for nothing that every akathist is filled with the words “Rejoice...”. God and the saints rejoice when they look at the person praying. And we should always rejoice. The akathist and its accompanying prayers are laudatory glorification, words of heartfelt joy.
Another important point before reading the akathist is that you need to organize your thoughts and distract yourself from everything earthly. Cut off all thoughts that come and violate prayer. After all, they are from the evil one, who wants to prevent you from reading the akathist and glorifying God and His saints.
It is also possible to read the akathist together - collectively, with the whole family. Common prayer has profound power. After all, everyone prays to their own extent, depending on their spiritual experience and heart. It is recommended to first take a blessing from a priest to read it at home. This is necessary in order to avoid all sorts of temptations and snares of the devil. The priest can also advise which saint or which icon of the Mother of God the akathist should be read in a given situation. In addition, among Orthodox Christians, any business should begin with prayer and blessing.
The main thing is that all those gathered understand the importance of the prayer rule. So that there is peace and forgiveness for our neighbors, especially those who pray together. To try to penetrate and give your heart to God. And this is exactly what the Lord longs for. Then He answers our prayers, the singing of akathists and psalms, and helps us in our needs.
Beginning and ending of reading canons and akathists
Through the prayers of the saints, our fathers, Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on us. Amen.
Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us (three times, with the sign of the cross and bows from the waist).
Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.
Most Holy Trinity, have mercy on us. Lord, cleanse our sins. Master, forgive our iniquities. Holy One, visit and heal our infirmities, for Thy name's sake.
Lord, have mercy (three times).
Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.
Our Father, who art in heaven. Hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done as it is in Heaven and on earth. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors, and do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.
Lord, have mercy (12 times).
Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.
Come, let us worship our God the King (bow).
Come, let us bow down and bow down to Christ our King God (bow).
Come, let us bow and fall before Christ Himself, the King and our God (bow).
Psalm 50
Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your great mercy, and according to the multitude of Your mercies, cleanse my iniquity. Above all, wash me from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my iniquity and bear away my sin before me. I have sinned against You alone, and I have created evil before You, so that You may be justified in Your words and overcome, never judge You.
Behold, I was conceived in iniquity, and my mother gave birth to me in sins. Behold, Thou hast loved the truth, Thou hast revealed to me Thy unknown and secret wisdom. Sprinkle me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. Give joy and gladness to my hearing; humble bones will rejoice. Turn Your face away from my sins, and cleanse all my iniquities.
Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a right spirit in my womb. Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit away from me. Reward me with the joy of Your salvation, and strengthen me with the Master’s Spirit. I will teach the wicked Your way, and the wicked will turn to You. Deliver me from bloodshed, O God, God of my salvation; my tongue will rejoice in Your righteousness.
Lord, open my mouth, and my mouth will declare Your praise. As if you had wanted sacrifices, you would have given burnt offerings, but you would not have been pleased. The sacrifice to God is a broken spirit, a contrite and humble heart, God will not despise. Bless Zion, O Lord, with Your favor, and may the walls of Jerusalem be built.
Then you will be pleased with the sacrifice of righteousness, the wave offering and the burnt offering, then they will lay the bullock on Your altar.
Symbol of faith
I believe in One God, the Father, Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, visible to all and invisible. And in the One Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the Only Begotten, Who was born of the Father before all ages; Light from Light, true God from true God, born, uncreated, consubstantial with the Father, to Whom all things were.
For our sake, man and our salvation came down from heaven and became incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became human. She was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate, and suffered and was buried. And he rose again on the third day according to the Scriptures. And ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of the Father.
And again the coming one will be judged with glory by the living and the dead, His Kingdom will have no end. And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Life-Giving One, who proceeds from the Father, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who spoke the prophets. Into one Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the remission of sins.
I hope for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the next century. Amen.
Then the canon or akathist (or a canon with an akathist, read after the 6th song of the canon).
Upon completion of the reading of the canon (akathist) - a prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ or the Mother of God, a saint - according to the meaning of the akathist. Then:
It is worthy to eat, as you truly bless Theotokos, Ever-Blessed and Most Immaculate and Mother of Our God. The most honorable Cherub and the Most Glorious without comparison Seraphim, who gave birth to God the Word without corruption, the real Mother of God, we magnify You.

Prayer
Master Lord Jesus Christ my God, who, for the sake of Your ineffable love for mankind, at the end of the ages was clothed in flesh by the Ever-Virgin Mary, I glorify Your saving providence for me, Your servant, Master; I will sing praises to You, because for the sake of the Father I have known You; I will bless You, for whose sake the Holy Spirit has come into the world;
I bow to Your Most Pure Mother in the flesh, who served such a terrible secret; I praise Your angelic faces, as the singers and servants of Your Majesty; I honor John the Baptist, who baptized You, O Lord;
I honor the prophets who proclaimed You, I glorify Your holy apostles; I triumph and the martyrs, and I glorify Your priests; I worship Your saints, and I cherish all Your righteous ones.
I bring such and such a many and ineffable face of the Divine into prayer to You, Thy all-generous God, Thy servant, and for this sake I ask forgiveness for my sin, grant me all of Thy for the sake of the saints, more abundantly than Thy holy bounties, for Thou art blessed forever. Amen
Prayer 7, St. John Chrysostom (24 prayers, according to the number of hours of the day and night)
Lord, do not deprive me of Your heavenly blessings.
Lord, deliver me from eternal torment. Lord, whether I have sinned in mind or in thought, in word or in deed, forgive me. Lord, deliver me from all ignorance and oblivion, and cowardice, and petrified insensibility. Lord, deliver me from every temptation. Lord, enlighten my heart, even if it darkens evil lust. Lord, as man has sinned, You, as a generous God, have mercy on me, seeing the weakness of my soul. Lord, send Your grace to help me, so that I may glorify Your holy name. Lord Jesus Christ, write the name of your servant in the book of living creatures and give me a good end. Lord, my God, even if I have done nothing good before You, let me, by Your grace, make a good beginning. Lord, sprinkle the dew of Your grace into my heart. Lord of heaven and earth, remember me, Thy sinful servant, cold and unclean, in Thy Kingdom. Amen. Lord, accept me in repentance. Lord, don’t leave me. Lord, don’t lead me into trouble. Lord, give me a good thought. Lord, give me tears and mortal memory and tenderness. Lord, give me the thought of confessing my sins. Lord, give me humility, chastity and obedience. Lord, give me patience, generosity and meekness. Lord, plant in me the root of good things, Thy fear in my heart. Lord, grant me to love You with all my soul and thoughts and to do Your will in everything. Lord, protect me from some people, and demons, and passions, and from all other inappropriate things. Lord, know that you do as you will, that your will be done even in me, a sinner, for blessed are you forever. Amen.
What is an akathist in Orthodoxy?
There is no historically confirmed information about the author of the first akathist. How, according to Tradition, the pious desire of Christians to paint the image of the Mother of God was fulfilled by the Apostle Luke. Someone had to fulfill the desire that arose in the souls of believers to praise the Most Holy Theotokos with a hymn of thanksgiving. Church historians name the Venerable Roman the Sweet Singer (6th century) as a possible author.
As Tradition says, by special heavenly inspiration he wrote the first kontakion in honor of the Feast of the Nativity of Christ. On the eve of the Feast of the Nativity of Christ, the Mother of God appeared to the Monk Roman in Constantinople in a dream vision. She ordered to eat the parchment scroll. When the monk woke up, he ascended to the pulpit (an elevated place in the church) and began to proclaim:
“Today a virgin gives birth to the Most Essential, and the earth brings a den to the Unapproachable: angels with shepherds glorify, while wolves travel with a star: for for our sake the Young Child, the Eternal God, was born.”
Centuries later (13th century), similar hymns were written to the Lord, various icons of the Mother of God, Angelic powers and holy saints of God. Thus, the akathist turned into a special genre of church chants.
The authors of ancient akathists are often unknown. New songs of praise are being written right up to the present time. The desire to express feelings through an akathist testifies to the need of the Christian soul to bring praise and thanksgiving for the help provided.
“Thanksgiving to the one who receives gifts encourages the One who gives gifts to give even other gifts, greater than the first. Gifts remain without multiplication only when there is no thanksgiving for them” (St. Ignatius Brianchaninov, 1807-1867).

If you can't sing, you can read it. Each canticle consists of troparia. Before reading each troparion, a chorus is added. Holidays: Glory to Thee, our God, glory to Thee. Theotokos: Most Holy Theotokos, save us. To the Saints: Our Saint Nicholas, pray to God for us; Reverend Our Father Sergius, pray to God for us; Our holy blessed mother Ksenia, pray to God for us. If the troparion is preceded by the designation “Glory:” or “Trinity:”, then the troparion is dedicated to the Lord and instead of the chorus, “Glory:” is read (see generally accepted abbreviations). If the troparion is inscribed “And now:” or “Theotokos:”, then it is dedicated to the Most Holy Theotokos and is also read without a chorus. If there is no trinity in the song, but only the Mother of God, “Glory, and now:” is read before it. If not and the Mother of God (in the canons of the Most Holy Theotokos), then “Glory, and now:” is read after all the troparions. In the eighth song, instead of “Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,” it reads “Let us bless the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit of the Lord.” After the 3rd and 6th songs (during home reading), “Lord, have mercy” is read three times. We advise you to study the Prayer before going online.
The canons presented on the Akathist are intended primarily for home reading and contain some simplifications (similarities, confusion, voice numbers, repetitions of troparia, etc. have been removed). Texts for the service are available in “green” and “brown” menaions.
Note on reading the akathist
(placed in each akathist after the 13th kontakion). The first 12 kontakia and ikos are usually read. Kontakion 13 is read three times with bows. After this, the 1st ikos is read, which is located at the beginning of the akathist, immediately after the 1st kontakion. Then the 1st kontakion is read. After it, the prayers located at the end of the akathist are read.
A combination of two or more canons.
The combination of canons is carried out in accordance with the Typikon or liturgical instructions. If you do not have these books at hand or you do not know how to use them, you can follow a simplified procedure. The canons for the Lord and the holidays are read first. The second is to the Most Holy Theotokos. Third - saints, saints, martyrs, righteous people and other saints. At the beginning of each song, the irmos of the first canon is read, then all its troparia with choruses are read in turn, then the troparia of the next song of the second canon, etc.
Connecting the canon with the akathist
(if the canon and akathist are for the same holiday, or an icon of the Most Holy Theotokos, or a saint). The Akathist is read after the 6th song of the canon instead of the kontakion and ikos, which are given in the canon.
Maundy Tuesday
MORNING: Clock. Fine. Vespers. Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts
EVENING: Matins. 1st hour
The general pattern of Holy Tuesday services is the same as on Monday. Tuesday's texts are dedicated to the teachings of the Savior, which he delivered in the Temple on the second day after His triumphal entry into Jerusalem. The main place is occupied by the topic of denunciation of the Pharisees and scribes, who after this finally break with Christ and decide to kill Him
Particular attention is drawn to the parables of the ten virgins and the talents. They warn Christians about the enormous responsibility for every action in life and about the cause-and-effect relationship in a person’s life
Old Testament texts continue to tell about the suffering of the Jewish people in Egyptian captivity and about the righteous Job. They all say that grief is not in vain, and prepare believers for worthy participation in the Passion of the Lord.
