The parable of the workers in the vineyard seems difficult for the common man to understand

So, before us lies the parable of the workers in the vineyard, or otherwise called the parable of the vinedresser and the workers. It seems at first glance that everything is simple. A story about how workers worked in the vineyard. But is it? First, let's look at what a parable is.

A parable is a short edifying story that is written in an allegorical form, that is, a form that carries a hidden meaning. In the parable there is a moral teaching, that is, a moral, a conclusion from everything that has been said.

Vladimir Ivanovich Dal believed that a parable is closer to a fable, but it differs only in the breadth of generalization, as well as the significance of the underlying idea

For example, if we consider the great writers, many believed that a parable is a lesson by example. This is what the famous writer, ethnographer, lexicographer and folklore collector Vladimir Ivanovich Dal thought.

He believed that a parable is closer to a fable, but differs only in the breadth of its generalization, as well as the significance of the underlying idea. There is no characterization in the parable, and there is no indication of where or in what place this takes place.

Many other writers also turned to the parable genre, for example, Leo Tolstoy, Bertolt Brecht, Franz Kafka.

In the Bible, the word “parable” is translated as a short saying that expresses a rule of life

In the Bible, the word “parable” is translated as a short saying that expresses a rule of life. These were, for example, the parables of Solomon. The parables of Solomon are wisdom, which is presented as everyday advice, justified by the will of the one God.

The parables of King Solomon were very different from the parables of Jesus Christ. Photo: fb.ru

What can be said about the parables that Jesus Christ speaks? The interpretations that Jesus gives to his parables speak more about the heavenly, true and spiritual life. But Solomon's parables are more addressed to everyday and everyday practice.

The Parable of the Workers and the Vineyard Gives Great Hope to Many People

The parable of the workers and the vineyard gives great hope to many. Perhaps, first of all, to the parents of those children who have departed from God. But you need to know one thing, that for Our God no one and nothing is lost. He will call a person until the very last minute of his life. As long as a person is still alive, nothing will be too late.

No matter how good Christians we consider ourselves, we must always consider ourselves slaves who are good for nothing. Christ died precisely for us, for all humanity. And our dignity lies in our participation in His death and resurrection, and not in what we create.

The Lord teaches us that He will always wait for us until the very last minute. Photo: elohov.ru

No matter what we try, we will never become like Christ. Through many labors and sorrows we can obtain that gift, and only in this way will great joy come to us, because in the Kingdom of God of justice only workers of the eleventh hour are we.

St. Justin (Popovich)

Many will be the first last, and the last first

With the coming of the God-Man into the earthly world, everything changes. Both values and standards change. All judgment belongs to the God-man (John 5:22; 9:39): judgment about everything, about God and about man, and about everything between God and man. And the God-man transfers this judgment to His holy disciples (verse 28). In fact, the first and greatest value in this world is the God-man Christ: for He is the whole God incarnate in man, and the whole man in God. There is no doubt that in the God-man we have both all God and all man; perfect God and perfect man. Thanks to the God-man Lord Jesus, we people know what God is and who God is, what man is and who man is. All values are distributed in relation to the Lord Christ as the God-man. He is the infallible measure of everything Divine and everything human; and everything that exists. In relation to Him and by Him, all people are distributed and counted. And those first, and those last, and all the rest between the first and the last. The last in the eyes of people, as soon as he believes in the Lord Christ and loves Him most of all, by this alone he becomes first, first before Christ, before God. Many times the first in the eyes of people becomes the last if he does not believe in the Lord Christ, if he does not reject his idolatry, be it the worship of things, the worship of ideas, the worship of thoughts. Nothing of Christ reaches the level of any kind of idolatry. And this is already hell. Saint Chrysostom preaches the gospel with divine inspiration: The Savior said: this is impossible for men, but with God all things are possible (verse 26) not so that you weaken in spirit and move away from the work of salvation as impossible; no, he said this so that you, realizing the greatness of the subject, would the sooner take up the work of salvation, and, with the help of God, having embarked on the path of these wonderful exploits, receive eternal life. How can the impossible be made possible? If you give up your property, give it to the poor and give up evil desires. If you do this persistently and constantly, then the impossible will become possible, and so gradually and little by little climb the ladder leading to heaven. Otherwise, the passion for wealth is some new, terrible and incurable kind of madness.

Right John of Kronstadt

Many will be the first last, and the last first

That life will be different in everything from the present: many who were first here will be last there. Here, primacy depends on merit to the king and society, on origin, on brilliant natural talents, on an adventurous character, on cunning, cunning and other conditions. It won't happen there. Whose moral perfection is higher than others, he will be higher, he will prevail. On earth, primacy, so to speak, is earthly, spontaneous, determined by the conditions of life on this planet on which we live, where untruth often sets its throne and where external virtues often take precedence over internal ones.

Interpretation of the parable of the vinedresser and the workers for modern man

Let's consider the interpretation of the parable of the vinedresser and the workers. From the point of view of a simple modern person, this parable is completely incomprehensible.

Each person, having worked his time, will demand that payment be made according to the work done. If the owner does the same as in the parable of the vineyard and the workers, then he will be indignant at the arbitrariness of his owner.

“For the kingdom of heaven is like a master of a house, who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard...”

Before us is not some social theme, but the revelation of the Kingdom of Heaven. In the parable, the workers of the third, sixth and ninth hours made an agreement with the owner of the vineyard that they would receive payment after their work at the end of the day. But, seeing that the eleventh hour workers received more, others also began to ask for additional payment for their labors.

Let's move it to the spiritual sphere. Exactly the same relationship occurs between us and God. Can a person who turned to God on his deathbed after a joyful life live be next to someone who dedicated his entire life to God and lived according to his Laws, as it should be?

Did all the long fasting and prayer mean nothing at all?

It is very difficult for us to imagine that the Lord rewards those who remembered Him less or served Him. We would all prefer that God act according to our laws.

We could allow Him to love the unloved only on our terms, in a certain order.

The Gospel proclaims one of the most important truths of faith, which the Apostle Paul spoke about:

“...All have sinned, all fall short of the glory of God, but are justified by the gift of His grace...”

(Rom. 3:23–24)

In fact, these people who were dissatisfied with the payment were simple scribes and Pharisees who never ceased to be forever indignant at Christ because He always gathered tax collectors, sinners and others around Him. At the end of the parable we see that the Lord says:

“...Or is your eye envious because I am kind?”

Many will be the first last, and the last first

The synagogue was the first to be called to salvation, but was weakened by a lack of faith. And then the Church, rising in the house of its father, that is, the law, out of the weakness of its sins, rushed to Christ, and by faith surpassed its weakness, and accepted the grace missed by the synagogue. The synagogue, seeing that the Church was not only healed of its weakness, but also became a daughter of God, having received the Holy Spirit, itself went to Christ, more out of zeal than out of faith. As the apostle says: But from their fall salvation comes to the Gentiles, to make them jealous (Rom. 11:11). So the synagogue, which was called first, turned out to be second for the faith; Thus the Church, called second, received the first fruits of salvation before God.

The many will be first and last, and the last will be first

Many who seem to be first in this life will be last in the future life, and vice versa - those who seem to be last here will be first there. This is said in general to everyone, so that those who are preferred in this life will not be proud, and those who are despised here will not despair, and in particular these words are directed to the Pharisees and others like them, who are challenging the primacy with all their might. Since not everyone believed at the same time, but some believed earlier, and others later, he offers a parable to console the latter and encourage their souls. This parable had to be first stated in its entirety - this was required by its explanation, and then, together, we also had to say something about it. Although it is quite long, it is easy to understand.
