On November 24, 2009, by decision of the Holy Synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, the Rovenkovsky Vicariate of the Luhansk Diocese was established.

On January 5, 2013, an independent Rovenkovsky diocese was formed by separating from the Lugansk diocese within the Antratsytovsky, Krasnodonsky, Lutuginsky and Sverdlovsk districts and adjacent cities of regional subordination of the Lugansk region [1].

The conflict in the south-east of Ukraine, which began in 2014, also affected the Rovenky diocese[2].
