What are the main arguments for this negative attitude? Note that a person does not cease to believe in God and keeps the commandments inherent in both Christianity and Islam. – Christianity is not just the recognition of some abstract God and a set of common moral precepts. Christians believe in Jesus Christ - God, Who became Man, Who does not just issue directives “from above” on how to live correctly, but Who became like one of us, lived among people and with His life, death on the cross and resurrection from the dead, opened the way for us salvation. A person who becomes a Muslim does not believe in such a God. The Koran directly condemns the teaching that Christ is God and the Son of God (5.17, 9.30). If a Christian accepts Islam, this means that he renounces Christ, who said: “I am the Son of God” (John 10: 36). That is why this is a spiritual tragedy over which the Church mourns. – Is the problem of Christians accepting Islam relevant today for the Russian Orthodox Church? Are any steps being taken to prevent this, or is faith a personal choice in which the Church has no right to interfere?

But this is not one of the current church problems, since this phenomenon is, in general, marginal. – Certain ideas of Islam look more favorable in the eyes of the modern world - for example, the permissibility of polygamy, but if we take Islam as a whole, then it is not very easy to promote it, since a rather negative image of Islam has formed in society, which Muslim preachers themselves often complain about. This concerns not only the topic of terrorism, but also, for example, the position of women, as well as the aggressive image that was created thanks to the behavior of some representatives of Caucasian youth. Of course, Muslim apologists are trying to destroy this negative image, but so far they themselves are unlikely to admit that their work has been completely successful.

– Don’t you think that the scandals surrounding the Russian Orthodox Church are one of the reasons for the loss of Christians’ trust in their Church, which leads to the search for a new faith?

– It seems to me that this is exactly the result that people who stir up these scandals are trying to achieve. However, in reality, there is no loss of Christian trust in the Church. – Does the social structure of Muslims influence this: a community (jamaat), where everyone is brothers and sisters, which attracts, for example, single people?

In the first centuries of Islam there was such a figure - the caliph. They were considered the viceroys of the “prophet”, and they had not only secular, but also doctrinal power. They compiled the Koran, determined what was true and what was false, and persecuted heretics. When the caliphate was abolished, no such figure remained. And now there are simply many authoritative experts on Islam who, in principle, are equal to each other in status. One, for example, may declare: suicide attacks against civilians are a sin, and for a Muslim this is unacceptable. And another will say: this is a wonderful struggle in the path of Allah, and every Muslim is obliged to contribute to it. And now a simple Muslim is free to decide for himself which of the two he will listen to. There is no such mechanism in Sunni Islam now that would force it to admit that it is only necessary to listen to this mufti, and this is not necessary at all. As you can imagine, this state of affairs greatly contributes to the diversity of opinions that you ask about.

– According to Archpriest Vladimir Vigilyansky, the doctrine of the Muslim faith is built on the fact that a true Muslim is a priori “chosen and sinless,” in contrast to a Christian sinner. That is why, Father Vladimir believes, Muslims are easier to manipulate, sometimes pursuing the most terrible goals. Do you agree with his position?


Warriors of Allah

– Maybe this is the case, but it seems to me that the main reason is different. The figure of Muhammad is considered an ideal, a role model: what he did, what he said and especially what he called for - all this has become normative in Islam. The Quran says: “The Messenger of Allah is an exemplary example for you” (33.21). What will a Muslim see when he opens the traditional biography of Muhammad? The “messenger’s” wars with the infidels, praising jihad as the greatest feat and calls for participation in it. Someone, having read it, may say: this is not for me, I just want to live, raise children, provide for my family. And someone will want to imitate, will want to become a martyr. Such a person will only have to be instructed and directed in the “right” direction.

– What is the root of the fact that Islam is rightfully associated with terrorism? How did it happen that Muslims largely “monopolized” terrorist activities, hiding behind and using faith?

– The reason for this association is that the majority of religiously motivated terrorist attacks with human casualties are committed by Muslims. It is a fact. You can look at the report of the US National Counterterrorism Center, which monitors the situation around the world. A 2011 report found that “Sunni extremists accounted for the largest number of terrorist attacks and deaths for the third year in a row. More than 5,700 incidents have been linked to Sunni extremists, who are responsible for nearly 56 percent of all terrorist attacks and about 70 percent of all terrorist deaths." According to statistics from this center, 43% of terrorist attacks were committed for non-religious reasons (nationalist, separatist, environmental, etc.). And of the 57% religiously motivated, 56% were committed by Muslims. The root is what was said above. Among religiously motivated terrorists there are both Christians and Buddhists, but their number is tiny, less than the statistical error. This is not surprising if we remember that neither Christ nor Buddha ever took up a sword in their lives. And Muhammad had nine swords, and they served him not just for interior decoration.

– There is a widespread belief that Muslims are intolerant. But didn’t the rather aggressive reaction of the Orthodox public to the antics of the punk group Pussy Riot expose a similar intolerance of religions?

Believers are people too, and they have the right to be protected from blasphemy

– On the one hand, bloody terrorist attacks with thousands of victims, and on the other hand, many indignant words and one torn T-shirt - do you think it’s appropriate to talk about the similarities here? It seems to me that the reaction of the supporters of the mentioned punk band should rather be called aggressive. Who wrote: “Free Pussy Riot” - with the blood of murdered people? Who cut down worship crosses, desecrated churches, poured ink on icons? And from the Orthodox side there are only indignant words and one torn T-shirt. These women were judged not by the Church, but by a secular court. To those who say that the Church should have let them go and forgive them, I would like to remind you that the Church actually did just that at first. The first time they tried to carry out their prank in the Yelokhovsky Cathedral, the temple workers simply took them out and let them go in peace. They didn’t call the police or write a statement. How did these women respond? An even more defiant prank in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior. For some reason, our media “forgot” this circumstance. By the way, when in Germany a supporter of this punk band tried to hold a rally in their support in the Cologne Cathedral, representatives of the Catholic Church immediately called the police and filed a lawsuit against him. And that's okay. Believers are people too, and they have the right to be protected from a situation where, upon coming to church, they will be forced to listen to blasphemy and mockery of their faith. In fact, the German court found this man guilty of violating the rights of believers.

– Do you personally know Orthodox Christians who have converted to Islam?

– Since I specialized in Christian-Muslim relations, at different times quite a few people wrote to me by email, saying that they had converted from Christianity to Islam. I met some of them in person. Almost all of them did not even know the basics of Christianity, the most basic things. The exception here is cases where former priests converted to Islam. For example, I had the opportunity to communicate with Ali Polosin. He, of course, knew Christian teaching. I got the impression that he did not convert to Islam for religious reasons. It's my personal opinion. Although, apparently, I was not the only one who experienced this. I remember how I was surprised to see on one of the Muslim forums several years ago a seriously stated accusation that Polosin had allegedly been specially sent by the Russian Orthodox Church to destroy Russian Islam from the inside. This, of course, is absurd, but, nevertheless, it shows that the range of reactions to “envelopes” can be very wide. I also know examples of people who, having converted to Islam, then returned to the Church with repentance.

– Having learned that one of your parishioners is planning to become a Muslim, what will you do?

- I'll talk to him. I'll let you read the literature. I will pray for him.


Baptism of three Muslims

– If a Muslim came to you and wanted to become Orthodox, would you agree to perform the sacrament of baptism? Have there been such cases in your practice?

In every Moscow parish you will find a former Muslim among the parishioners.

– As a deacon, I cannot perform baptism, the priest does it. But, for example, I had the opportunity to conduct public conversations (preparation for baptism) with former Muslims who want to become Orthodox. There is nothing exceptional here - in every Moscow parish you will find a former Muslim among the parishioners, and every priest in a more or less large city parish has experience in baptizing Muslims who themselves came to Christ and asked to be accepted into the Church.
