Life of the Holy Martyr Anatoly of Nicea
The story of the martyr begins in the city of Nicomedia, in Asia Minor. The father of the future saint, Philotheus, was a pagan and engaged in trade. He had three sons: Eustathius, Thespesius and Anatoly. One day, returning from a trip, Philotheus met a Christian preacher and accepted a new faith. And soon he baptized his entire family.
Christianity in those days was persecuted by the Roman authorities.
Therefore, Philotheus’s family secretly professed the true faith. The eldest son Eustathius accepted the rank of presbyter and served the Savior. After the death of their parents, the young people continued their father’s work: they successfully engaged in trade. Their wealth and piety made them the envy of some townspeople. Therefore, when one of the courtiers found out that the sons of Philotheus were Christians, he reported to Emperor Maximian.
The brothers were immediately brought to court. Eustathius foresaw that they would receive crowns of martyrdom and strengthened the spirit of Thespesius and Anatolius. When they appeared before the ruler of Rome, Maximian tried with flattery and promises to force them to bow to pagan idols. But the righteous unanimously refused. Then the emperor ordered to beat them with sticks. After a long beating, the martyrs were again asked whether they would do what was required. And again the tormentors heard a refusal.
Maximian ordered the righteous to be sent to prison and starved. When the order was carried out, an angel of the Lord appeared to the martyrs in the gloomy prison, nourishing them with heavenly manna and healing their wounds. He said that he would be with them until the very end and admonished them to the true faith. Soon the emperor wished to judge the prisoners. The guards found them healthy and sleeping peacefully. Seeing this, the ruler was amazed, but with threats he tried to force the brothers to renounce Christ. And again he failed.
Then Maximian ordered Eustathius, Thespesius and Anatolius to be devoured by wild animals. The martyrs were brought to the arena of the city circus, where the townspeople had already gathered, among whom were many Christians. Two lions and three bears were unleashed on the brothers. People in the stands were terrified by the ferocity of the predators. Eustathius read psalms and consoled his younger brothers. And the animals did not harm the sufferers, but, on the contrary, submitted to the hand of Eustathius. What they saw amazed the people. The pagans called the saints sorcerers, and the Christians glorified the Lord God.
The martyrs were again sent to prison, where an angel appeared to them. The heavenly messenger fed them and consoled them. At this time, the emperor's son fell ill, and the ruler ordered his military leader Anthony to deal with his brothers. Anthony took the Christians to Nicaea, where he again held a trial. Here Eustathius, Thespesius and Anatolius again renounced idols and were subjected to torture: their bodies were torn with iron claws. But again they held out.
Seeing the persistence and strength of faith of the sufferers, the torturer decided to execute them. On the eve of the massacre, an angel again appeared to the brothers and consoled them. After this, the Christians were taken out of the city and executed by beheading with a sword. They wanted to throw their remains to be devoured by animals, but two fellow believers turned out to be at the execution site. They carefully buried the remains of the martyrs.
