What does it help with? Description of the icon.

The image of the Kykkos Icon of the Mother of God shows the Child playing: in the hands of the Mother of God the Child Christ is depicted in an unusual pose.
She lightly touches the Son of God with her cheek, and He pulls his hands forward from Her - this is what all little children often do. Theologians interpret this icon as the human side of the Lord, that is, revealing His natural feelings and instincts for humans. According to legend, this icon, like the similar one, the Leaping of the Child, illustrates one of the episodes of the event of the Presentation of the Lord. When the Infant Christ was brought to the Jerusalem Temple, Elder Simeon came out to meet the Mother of God and Joseph. He was one of 70 Bible translators who at one time doubted the possibility of the birth of the Son of God from a Virgin. God told Simeon that he would not die until he saw Christ born. And this moment came, and the elder, realizing by the grace of God who was before him, stretched out his hands to take the Infant of God. Jesus Christ was then just a Baby and, of course, He did not want to go into the arms of an unfamiliar old man - that’s why he pulled back, away from him. The meaning of the image

The content of the icon resembles the image of the Leaping Child. It depicts an episode that was later called the Presentation of the Lord. When visiting the Jerusalem Temple, at the entrance, Mary with Jesus in her arms met Elder Simeon, one of those seven dozen people who translated Biblical texts.

He, like many other translators, did not at first believe in the virgin birth. And so the Lord promised to show him the born Messiah. Simeon immediately understood who he saw in front of him and wanted to take Jesus in his arms. But the baby did not express a desire to get to the stranger, reaching out to his mother. This is the second explanation of the image.

History of the icon

The story of the Kykkos Icon of the Mother of God is a wonderful legend about the true help of the Mother of God to people. Like many other icons of the Mother of God, it was painted by the Evangelist Luke. The icon rested in Egypt for quite a long time. And when the persecution of the peasants began, she was transferred to Constantinople. The icon remained in Byzantium for about two hundred years. At the end of this time, the Mother of God appeared to the Cypriot ruler Vutomitus, who ordered the Merciful Icon to be transferred to Cyprus. Having gathered his thoughts, Vutomit went to Constantinople to bow to Emperor Alexei, whose daughter was then very ill. Having listened carefully to the Cypriot ruler, Alexei ordered the icon to be handed over to him. And as soon as he gave the order, his daughter immediately recovered. However, the emperor decided to delay a little with the transfer of the icon. And therefore he himself became seriously ill.

The meaning of the face of the Mother of God

According to some information, this image belongs to one of those icons that were painted by the Evangelist Luke himself. Its name comes from the name of Mount Kykkos on the island of Cyprus. And they began to call her the Theotokos of Mercy of Kykkos because the Mother of God is depicted on it praying to her son for the salvation of the Christian race.

Initially, the Apostle Luke transferred it to Egypt, where it was kept until the 10th century. But rather, persecution of Christians began on the territory of this state and in order to protect her, a decision was made to transport her to Constantinople. She stayed there until the 12th century. One day, the emperor’s daughter became very ill and the doctors could not cure her. Just at that moment the ruler of the island of Cyprus arrived in Constantinople.

He had a vision that said that he needed to beg this icon from the emperor to build a monastery on Mount Kykkos on the island. The emperor promised to give the icon back and a miracle happened - his daughter was healed of a fatal illness. Seeing this, the emperor did not really want to part with such a miraculous image and began to use all sorts of tricks to avoid transferring the face.

After some time, the emperor himself fell ill and he received a vision of the Mother of God, who ordered her icon to be urgently transferred to Cyprus. The emperor ordered an accurate list to be made and sent her to the island by ship.

A temple with a monastery, which was called the imperial monastery, had already been built on the mountain. Since the money for it was allocated by the emperor. This image was placed there. Many say that there is a large amount of evidence of miraculous acts that occurred. She heals not only Christians, but also shows her mercy to other people of other faiths who read the prayers of the Kykkos Mother of God.

Why is the icon closed?

The veil hides the image of the Kykkos Icon of the Mother of God in Cyprus from the upper left corner to the lower right, so it is impossible to see the faces of the Mother of God and the baby sitting in her arms.

Why is the icon of the Kykkos Mother of God closed? This is the question many Orthodox Christians ask. The fact is that the icon is covered with a cloth in accordance with the tradition introduced by Alexei I Komnenos. He was imbued with such awe, love, and reverence for the shrine that he considered it unnecessary to disturb the Mother of God with even one extra and fleeting glance. As we said, he fell ill and during his illness the Blessed Virgin appeared to him in a dream, who told Alexei to give the icon to Vutomitus, which he immediately did when he woke up. After which I immediately felt relief and recovered. Before sending the icon to Cyprus, the Byzantine emperor asked to make a list of the shrine. And subsequently he donated considerable funds for the construction of the Imperial Temple in Cyprus, in which the shrine rests.
