Akathist to the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos, prayer, troparion and kontakion – Temple – Icon of the Mother of God – prayer for children, for health, marriage in Russian with emphasis

History of the holiday. What is the cover of the Blessed Virgin Mary?

The holiday is based on the appearance of the Virgin Mary with angels for the salvation of the people. At the same time, an even more unusual event occurred - the Mother of God covered a group of people hiding in the temple with her veil. These events took place in 910 on the territory of Constantinople (Byzantium). The people from the besieged city did not know where to escape, and therefore turned to the temple. People began to pray and ask for help.

Here, in the temple, was the holy fool Andrew, as well as his disciple Epiphanius. They saw the image of the Ever-Virgin Mary appearing. The Mother of God knelt down and prayed to the Lord for the salvation of all the people who were in the temple. With her were angels, a host of Saints. When the Virgin finished reading the prayer, she stood up, took the veil off her head, and then spread it over the heads of the people. The canvas shone with a bright light.

Then the Saints appeared: John the Baptist of God, John the Theologian.

Foolish Andrei asked his student if he saw the appearance of the Mother of God, he nodded in agreement. Thus the people in Constantinople were saved. Since then, the day of the appearance of the face of the Virgin Mary has been considered special. If you study the history of the holiday, it turns out that the Virgin saved the Byzantine people from the Slavs. Judging by the chronicles, there were no major events that could have led to the siege of Constantinople in those days. It is believed that it was the Saracens who opposed the Byzantines in those days.

In fact, all the events of those times are described accurately

but it was not told who threatened the siege of Constantinople.

One of the probable assumptions: then an embassy arrived from the ruler Oleg (the Prophet) from Kyiv, the purpose of the visit was to sign a peace agreement between Byzantium and Russia. Fear of them arose against the backdrop of the recent attack. Then the Vikings and Slavs made a devastating raid. This circumstance left a strong imprint in the memory of the people of Byzantium. The Vikings and Slavs were no less terrible for him than the Arabs.

Considering that, according to an agreement between Byzantium and Russia, a peace dated 911 was concluded, we can assume that this version is the most likely. This event acquired very important significance for all Orthodox Christians. Moreover, the mother of the Lord made it clear that it does not matter what the origin of a person and the entire people is. All that matters is their love for God.

Essentially, the holiday of veneration of the Intercession of the Mother of God

means the triumph of faith over military and ethnic conflicts.

Traditions. Customs. How is the Feast of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary celebrated?

This holiday is celebrated on October 14th. There is a tradition of attending church in the morning. A service is held in honor of the Mother of God. Everyone who comes must pray to the Virgin for health and protection from enemies. Then the Mother of God will cover the person asking with her honest omophorion, but now it will not be the real cloth thanks to which the inhabitants of Constantinople were saved in the temple, but an invisible one - a prayer cover.

The meaning of the holiday is

in strengthening faith, strengthening love, striving for the Lord, hoping for the protection of the Almighty.

Today, like many centuries ago, Mary continues to provide protection to people. When necessary, she will cover anyone who offers sincere prayer with an invisible omophorion. This is the essence of the holiday. That is why turning to the Mother of God in the temple is very important, because on this day many people turn to her, which strengthens the prayer text that is read in front of the icon.

After visiting the temple, pancakes are baked. When the Protection of the Mother of God is celebrated, it is not recommended to do housework: wash, wash, sew, or do construction. Even cooking is put off until the next day. You should also not give a loan, just as you should not refuse alms to someone asking for alms. On the contrary, you need to give away the excess. Young girls can ask for marriage. During the holiday, it is customary to send matchmakers. However, you should not refuse on October 14th. It is believed that after this, the girl will not be able to get married for another 3 years.

It was customary to light fires. If this was not possible, the stove was heated. This was done in order to provide the opportunity to burn dry moss and branches of fruit trees. It was believed that such actions would attract wealth. It was decided to complete field work by October 14. At the same time, they tried to finish collecting mushrooms.

Also, the Zaporozhye Cossacks in the Sich considered the Mother of God their patroness and intercessor. They elected atamans on this day and considered it one of the most significant.

It is still believed that the cover of the Mother of God is a powerful protection for soldiers

as well as civilians, because Virgo does not discriminate between people and nations.

What is an akathist?

Translated from Greek, this is a song during which you cannot sit, that is, you must read while standing. The meaning is a song of praise and gratitude. The first akathist was written in the 6th century. Authorship is attributed to Roman the Sweet Singer, an Orthodox saint. The Great Akathist is dedicated to the Mother of God; for a long time this term was used only in relation to it specifically.

Tradition says that the Akathist to the Most Holy Theotokos was read during the attack on Constantinople in the 7th century. The enemies completely surrounded the city; there was no hope. But the Mother of God heeded the prayers, the Persians retreated. In memory of this event, there is a holiday called Saturday Akathist, when praises are offered to the heavenly intercessor. Gradually, the holiday from a local one became common for all Orthodox churches; it is still celebrated on the 5th week of Lent.

This prayer singing is distinguished by a very special structure.

  • Introduction.
  • 12 ikos – often ending with the exclamation “Rejoice!” (hairetism).
  • 13 kontakia - they are shorter than ikos, ending with three times “Hallelujah!”
  • It ends with a prayer appeal, which is read three times.

This construction scheme was adopted by all akathists that began to appear at the end of the Byzantine period. The well-known akathist to the Sweetest Jesus, which is sometimes read by the clergy in churches, dates back to the 13th century. Authorship has not been established. This type of prayer singing is also common in the Catholic Church, where the Mother of God is also highly revered.

In Russia, akathists began to be actively composed in the 19th and 20th centuries. At the beginning of the last century, one and a half hundred were published, and even more were rejected. During the persecution, the population actively copied akathists, because they are easy to understand by ear, reading does not take much time, and most importantly, prayer does not require a clergyman, of whom there were very few left at that time.

The compilation of these chants is actively ongoing - today there are about 2 thousand of them. Each believer can choose what meets his spiritual needs. But reading akathists to the Most Holy Theotokos especially helps in various needs.

Holy image of the Intercession of the Mother of God

There is an icon that means the protection of all people who turn to God through it. It is called the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The icon depicts the Virgin Mary, she stretches her arms forward, while holding her omophorion. Here it is important to understand what kind of clothing item this is. Thus, today an omophorion refers to the attire of a church minister (of high rank). Literally it means “carrying on the shoulders.” Moreover, the word means duality (two shoulders).

The omophorion can also represent the image of a lost sheep that was carried back home on its shoulders. Accordingly, this word has a deeper meaning. It means the salvation of a person who, like a lost sheep, wandered away from the Lord, and when he turned to the temple, the clergyman restored his faith. There is also another, deeper interpretation: the salvation of all mankind by the Son of God.

Without an omophorion, a clergyman cannot conduct a service or otherwise demonstrate his sacred rites.

Considering the deep meaning of the omophorion, we can speak with confidence about the power of this Pokrov attire. The icon depicts Mary with an omophorion; she extends it forward, which may indicate her readiness to cover the suffering. Moreover, it provides protection not only for the body, but also for the soul.

What do they pray for on Intercession? How does the Protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary help? Icon of the Mother of God

There are no restrictions when contacting Virgo. This is a strong prayer to the Most Holy Theotokos for help in any circumstances. Like other prayer texts in the prayer book, these are various ways of turning to the Lord through the Saints, and there are no specializations among them. Every prayer is effective. However, some of the texts are read more often in certain situations. For example, a prayer is said on the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos for marriage, other reasons for turning to the Virgin:

  • request for child protection;
  • happiness in marriage and peace in the family;
  • health, while everyone who suffers from illnesses will recover;
  • about housing or solving financial problems - if difficulties arise, you can turn to the Virgin Mary;
  • about protecting the house from fire;
  • help in agriculture, the Mother of God helps prevent bad weather, preserves crops.

The significance of the Intercession of the Virgin Mary for Russia

The baptism of Rus' took place under the auspices of the Byzantine Orthodox Church. Their shrines have become like that for us. The Mother of God, the Intercessor of all Christians, now reveals Her Protection over our country. It's confirmed:

  • many miracles occurring from icons;
  • the help we receive through prayers to the Most Pure One;
  • abundance of healings;
  • victories over enemies;
  • appearance to our saints, etc.

It was necessary to somehow unite all the miracles and intercessions revealed under one symbol in order to honor the constant care of the Queen of Heaven for us. To pay tribute to the Love for us, which does not dry up to this day. Grace that we use constantly. This is the Holy Veil over all of us. Her prayers:

  • we live and rejoice;
  • maintaining peace and tranquility in families;
  • we entrust upbringing (birth of children) to her care;
  • inaccessible to external enemies;
  • strengthened in faith;
  • we receive the spirit of understanding and piety;
  • instructed in repentance and love for the Son;
  • led to the Heavenly Jerusalem.

In honor of all this, the Feast of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos was established and an Akathist was compiled. In fact, you can celebrate it every day, because the Mother of God does not leave Her prayer either day or night. That is why in Rus' so many churches are consecrated in Her honor, there are more miraculous icons than images of Christ Himself. He knows that She will not deprive the Holy Protection of the one who has faith and loves Him. Whom She Loved, more than anything else in the world.

Prayer to the Protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary – download text and listen to audio version

You need to turn to the Virgin Mary not only when problems or difficult life situations arise, but also in moments when everything is fine. It is not necessary to recite the entire prayer text from memory; you can listen to a recording or read a prayer book. Everyone makes the choice for themselves. The content of the text being read or spoken is the same, which may mean that the power of prayer is the same.

First prayer

Oh, Most Holy Virgin, Mother of the Lord of the highest powers, Queen of heaven and earth, our city and country, Almighty Intercessor!

Accept this singing of praise and gratitude from us, unworthy Thy servants, and lift up our prayers to the Throne of God Thy Son, that He may be merciful to our iniquities, and add His grace to those who honor Thy all-honorable name and with faith and love worship Thy miraculous image.

We are not worthy of being pardoned by Him, unless You propitiate Him for us, the Lady, for everything is possible for You from Him.

For this reason, we resort to You, as to our undoubted and speedy Intercessor: hear us praying to You, cover us with Your all-powerful protection, and ask God for Your Son: zeal and vigilance for our souls as our shepherds, wisdom and strength as city rulers, truth and impartiality for judges , the mentor is reason and humility, the spouse is love and harmony, the child is obedience, the offended is patience, the fear of God is offended, the sorrowful is complacency, the rejoicing is abstinence; for all of us is the spirit of reason and piety, the spirit of mercy and meekness, the spirit of purity and truth.

To her, Most Holy Lady, have mercy on Your weak people; Gather those who are scattered, guide those who have gone astray to the right path, support old age, raise young ones to be chaste, raise infants, and look upon us all with the gaze of Your merciful intercession, raise us from the depths of sin and enlighten our heartfelt eyes to the vision of salvation, be merciful to us here and there, in the land of earthly arrival and at the terrible judgment of Your Son; Having ceased in faith and repentance from this life, our fathers and brethren began to live with the Angels and all the saints in eternal life.

For you are, Lady, the Glory of heaven and the Hope of earth, You, according to God, are our Hope and Intercessor of all who flow to You with faith.

We therefore pray to You, and to You, as the Almighty Helper, we commit ourselves and each other and our whole life, now and ever and unto ages of ages.

Amen.

Second prayer

My Most Blessed Queen, my Most Holy Hope, friend of the orphaned and strange Intercessor, help for the needy and protection of the embittered, behold my misfortune, behold my sorrow: I am possessed by temptation everywhere, but there is no intercessor.

You yourself, help me as I am weak, feed me as I am strange, guide me as I am lost, heal and save me as I am hopeless.

There is no other help, no other intercession, no consolation except You, O Mother of all who grieve and are burdened!

Look down on me, a sinner and in bitterness, and cover me with Your most holy omophorion, so that I will be delivered from the evils that have befallen me, and I will praise Your revered name.

Amen.

Oh, Mother of All, who gave birth to all the saints, the Most Holy Word, having received our hymn today, healed from every mortal disease and delivered the future condemnation of those who cry: Alleluia.

This kontakion is read three times, then the 1st ikos “The representative angel...” and the 1st kontakion “Thy newly revealed...”.

First prayer

Oh, All-merciful and venerable Mother of God Pantanassa, the All-Tsarina! I am not worthy, but come under my roof! But as a merciful and gracious Mother of God, speak the word, may my soul be healed and my weak body strengthened. Imashi for the power is invincible and every word will not be exhausted from You, O All-Queen! You beg for me, You beg for me, that I may glorify Your glorious name always, now and forever. Amen.

Second prayer

Oh, Most Pure Mother of God, All-Tsarina! Hear our much-painful sigh before Your miraculous icon, brought from the inheritance of Athos to Russia, look upon Your children, incurable ailments of those suffering and to Your holy image those who fall with faith! Just like the winged bird covers its chicks, so You, now an ever-living being, cover us with Your multi-healing omophorion. There, where hope disappears, have undoubted hope. There, where fierce tribulations prevail, they appear with patience and weakness. There, where the darkness of despair has settled in the soul, let the ineffable light of the Divine shine! Comfort the faint-hearted, strengthen the weak, grant softening and enlightenment to hardened hearts. Heal Your sick people, O all-merciful Queen! Bless the minds and hands of those who heal us, may they serve as an instrument of the all-powerful Physician Christ our Savior. As You live with us, we pray before Your icon, O Lady! Extend Your hand, filled with healing and healing, Joy to those who mourn, in sorrow, Consolation, and having soon received miraculous help, we glorify the Life-Giving and Indivisible Trinity, the Father, and the Son, and the Holy ago of the Spirit forever and ever. Amen.

My story “My prayer for the Intercession”

“I was born on October 14, so I was taught to pray from childhood. Parents said: “On your birthday, the connection with the Mother of God is stronger.” But children do not always deeply feel the need to say a prayer, so I did too - I read a short version, thought, let others do it, and I have more important things to do, especially on Sundays, when I wanted to go for a quick walk. But already in adulthood, I faced problems that I myself could not solve: health, financial, and in my personal life.

Anna, 34 years old, Kirov

I started visiting the temple, I already knew that I needed to cover my head and come to the service. She started with a simple prayer (the shortest one), then moved on to the akathist Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos; she could only read it from a prayer book; it was difficult to remember a large amount of text. Now I appreciate this holiday as one of the most important. I go to church every year. The Mother of God helped me overcome thyroid disease; after treatment, my finances were at zero, but even here help came in the form of a new type of employment with a high income.”

How to read the akathist

  • First, be sure to say the initial prayers; usually they are in the akathist.
  • While reading the closing prayers, you can mention different people.
  • It is not necessary to take a blessing to read the akathist at home. You can pray at any time, on any day. But if you want to take a vow for a certain amount, you need to consult with your confessor. You should not make unreasonable promises.
  • If you plan to read aloud in church, you must ask permission from the abbot. Perhaps the priest will even agree to conduct a prayer service. Many churches hold traditional prayer services with akathists against drunkenness, for example.
  • The number of days on which the akathist is read is not regulated by the church. You can read one, you can read for 40 days - as long as you can. The result of prayer depends not on the number of repetitions, but on the faith and sincerity of the person praying.
