Powerful prayer during a loved one’s surgery

Turning to the Lord, the Most Holy Theotokos and the saints allows you to calm down, tune in to accept God’s will, whatever it may be, and gives you strength to get through this difficult moment in your life. You can ask for yourself and for your relatives. There are no exact instructions to whom to turn to with prayer before the operation so that it goes well.

In this matter, it is better to listen to yourself, which saint you want to ask for help. But still, there are special icons in the Orthodox tradition, prayers in front of which are considered especially effective.

Prayers said before surgery are considered to work miracles. Here are the strongest:

Prayer to the Holy Trinity

It is customary to pray in front of the icon in the most difficult and hopeless situations. The upcoming surgical intervention is one of these difficult moments.

O Most Merciful God, Father, Son and Holy Soul, worshiped and glorified in the Undivided Trinity, look kindly upon Thy servant (name), who is overcome by illness; forgive him all his sins; grant him healing from illness; restore his health and bodily strength; Give him a long and prosperous life, Your peaceful and premium blessings, so that he, together with us, brings grateful prayers to You, the All-Generous God and our Creator.

How to Pray at Home

When praying at home, you should turn off the TV, tape recorder, or computer (if a church service or prayer reading is not broadcast at this time). Otherwise, this technique can distract from communication with God.

When praying at home, just as in church, it is necessary to appear decent. A decent appearance will set you in the right mood. If desired, you can light a lamp or candle; burning incense is not prohibited.

How to pray correctly at home in front of an icon? When praying, it is advisable to stand upright, but if the person praying is sick, then you can sit and even lie down. Of course, you can pray on your knees. Many pray in solitude, but joint prayer is also pious, especially family prayer: then the prayers are read by one family member, and the rest repeat these words to themselves. In addition, you can divide the reading of different prayers out loud between all those praying: this is especially true when reading the morning and evening prayer rules together.

And, most importantly, you need to concentrate as much as possible on your prayer work, without being distracted by extraneous thoughts, much less business.

Summarize. How to pray in front of an Orthodox icon while at home?

  • Turn off TV, radio, etc.
  • Get your appearance in order.
  • Stand upright or kneel; if you are sick, you can pray lying down or sitting.
  • Be focused on prayer.

So, now you know how to properly pray in front of an icon in church and at home. Let your prayer be heard!

You can buy icons and everything you need for home prayer on the website of the Orthodox store PravLife.

First prayer to the Lord

The most effective prayer you can read to yourself before an upcoming operation is an appeal to the Lord. After all, both the Mother of God and the saints are intercessors before Him. Contact directly with sincere faith in a successful outcome.

Master, Almighty, Holy King, punish and do not kill, strengthen those who fall and raise up the overthrown, correct bodily sorrows of people, we pray to Thee, our God, Thy servant ( name) visit the weak with Thy mercy, forgive him every sin, voluntary and involuntary. Hey, Lord, send down Your healing power from Heaven, touch the body, extinguish the fire, tame passion and all lurking infirmities, be the doctor of Your servant (name), raise him up from the brink of death whole and all-perfect from the bed of bitterness, grant it to Thy Church, pleasing and doing Your will. For it is Yours to have mercy and save us, our God, and to You we send glory, to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Prayer to Nicholas the Wonderworker during surgery

Surgery is a test in every person’s life. After all, health is the main wish of any person and, in case of difficulties, the main concern of everyone. Surgery may cost a lot of money, but there will always be risks. For the sick, many benefits are no longer a joy: with pain or with concerns about health, neither money, nor travel, nor food are a joy. Unfortunately, our society of consumption, Instagram and beauty often forgets about this. This is why the Lord sends us illnesses: so that we can pass these tests, so that not even to punish us, but to stop us in the hustle and bustle of work and entertainment on weekends. God reminds us of Himself through health difficulties, which means that the first thing after prescribing and performing medical treatment for a person is to begin effective spiritual treatment. Asking the Good God for health through saints, for example, St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, is very important in Orthodoxy. Also pray to the saints for yourself or your loved ones - God’s strong holy man will always hear and convey your prayers to Heavenly Father. St. Nicholas the Wonderworker will do the same, and simply asking for recovery in prayer is the most effective way to talk to him. Listen to his answers in your heart, let no strife enter into it.

Second prayer to the Lord

Lord Almighty, Physician of our souls and bodies, humble and exalt, punish and yet again heal! Visit your infirm servant (name) and heal him, raising him from his bed and infirmity. Rebuke the spirit of infirmity, leave from it every ulcer, every disease, even if there is sin or lawlessness in it, weaken, forsake, forgive Yours for the sake of humanity. By her, Lord, have mercy on Thy creation in Christ Jesus our Lord, with Him art thou blessed, and with Thy Most Holy, and Good, and Life-giving Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages ́v. Amen.

Prayer before the icon of the Mother of God “Healer”

In front of this icon they ask for health for themselves and their loved ones. A request for healing of a seriously ill person will not go unanswered.

Accept, O All-Blessed and All-Powerful Lady Theotokos Virgin, these prayers, now brought to You with tears from us, Your unworthy servants, to Your celibate image of singing sending out with tenderness, as if You yourself are here and hearken to our prayer. For every request you fulfill, you alleviate sorrow, you give health to the weak, you heal the weakened and sick, you drive away demons from demons, you deliver the offended from their grievances, cleanse yourselves and your little children; Moreover, O Lady, Lady Theotokos, you free us from bonds and prisons and heal all manifold passions: for all things are possible through Your intercession to Your Son, Christ our God. Oh, All-Singing Mother, Most Holy Theotokos! Do not cease to pray for us, Your unworthy servants, who glorify You and honor You, and who worship Your Most Pure Image with tenderness, and who have irrevocable hope and undoubted faith in You, Ever-Virgin, Most Glorious and Immaculate, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Prayer before the icon of the Mother of God “Vsetsaritsa”

Prayer for a patient in front of this icon during an upcoming operation is one of the most powerful in a situation if a person is sick with cancer. Miracles happened when people turned to her and received healing even in the final stages.

Prayer 1

Oh, All-Good, Most Worshipful Mother of God Pantanassa, the All-Tsarina! I am not worthy, but come under my roof, but like the merciful Mother of God, say the word, may my soul be healed and my weak body strengthened. For Imashi is an invincible power, and every word of You will not fail, O Queen of All! You beg for me, You beg for me, that I may glorify Your glorious name always, now and forever. Amen.

Prayer 2

Oh, Most Pure Mother of God, All-Tsarina! Hear our much-painful sigh before Your miraculous icon, brought from the inheritance of Athos to Russia, look upon Your children, the incurable ailments of those suffering, to Your holy image those who fall with faith! Just like the winged bird covers its chicks, so You, now an ever-living being, cover us with Your multi-healing omophorion. There, where hope disappears, be with undoubted Hope. There, where fierce tribulations prevail, they appear with patience and weakness. There, where the darkness of despair has settled in the soul, let the ineffable light of the Divine shine! Comfort the faint-hearted, strengthen the weak, grant softening and enlightenment to hardened hearts. Heal Your sick people, O All-Merciful Queen! Bless the minds and hands of those who heal us, may they serve as an instrument of the Almighty Physician Christ our Savior. As You are alive, existing with us, we pray before Your icon, O Lady! Extend Your hand, filled with healing and healing, to bring joy to those who mourn, to bring consolation to those in sorrow, and having soon received miraculous help, we glorify the Life-Giving and Indivisible Trinity, the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit forever and ever. Amen.

Miracles through the prayers of St. Luke, healing of children and adults

The Bishop reposed in 1961. During this anti-religious time, crowds of people came to see him off on his final journey, and the authorities were unable to prevent this. But the Saint did not have to lie in the grave for long: after 30 years he was glorified as a saint and his relics were transferred to the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Simferopol. During these 30 years, evidence of the miraculous help of the late bishop-physician did not stop, although the authorities prevented their spread. After the glorification of the Saint and the discovery of the relics, stories of miracles began to be written down.

Icon "St. Luke"

Important! The Church considers the miracles of God performed through the prayers of saints not to be a violation of the laws of nature, but, on the contrary, a manifestation of the order created by God and lost by man.

A woman from Georgia who suffered from migraines spent all her money on treatment and did not feel relief. A relative told her to ask for help from St. Luke and brought an icon and oil from the relics from Crimea. The patient began to pray fervently, anointed herself with oil every day, and read an akathist to the saint. A month passed, the migraine did not go away, but the woman did not despair, knowing that Saint Luke could not refuse her. One night in her sleep she felt as if someone was performing an operation on her head. Everything was “real”: the injection, the pain, the suturing, and the burning of the wound. The next morning the sufferer woke up completely healthy.

Other prayers for healing:

  • Sorokoust about health
  • Prayer before the image of the Mother of God “The All-Tsarina”
  • Prayer to Archangel Michael for healing

One family had an unhealthy child. He required many surgeries to survive. The relatives were very worried, but it never occurred to anyone to pray to Luke of Crimea; they never really prayed. One day, the child’s godmother accidentally walked into the church and was struck by the “living” gaze of St. Luke from the icon, fixed on her: “Why don’t you pray?”

Taking this as a sign, the godmother began to read prayers and an akathist. The first operations were successful, the problems seemed to disappear by themselves. The most difficult thing remained ahead; the doctors did not vouch for success. The child’s parents began to look for another clinic, but the godmother dissuaded them. She clearly heard the words of the saint: “I said that I would take care!” Leaving the child with the previous surgeon was a feat of faith for the family of the little sufferer. And they received a reward: the most complex head operation was completed without complications.

A mother of many children from the Moscow region, Yulia, often had to carry strollers and children to the fourth floor, as a result of which she developed an umbilical hernia. The diagnosis was absolutely accurate: the woman was suffering from pain, the doctor prescribed her immediate surgery. Yulia was worried: there was no one to leave the children with, they were just planning to go on vacation to Crimea, to visit their parents. Remembering the holy doctor, Julia prayed to him and decided to postpone the operation until the end of the holidays.

Arriving with the children in Simferopol, the woman went into the Trinity Cathedral. The day before, she had learned a prayer to say before the relics of St. Luke, but when she approached the shrine, she forgot all the words. The woman felt peace and tranquility in her soul; she did not want to ask for anything.

Arriving at her parents' house, Julia found a local doctor who had come to examine her father. At the same time, the doctor began to examine her hernia, after which he was surprised: “You don’t have any hernia!” A second, more detailed examination also confirmed the complete absence of the disease. Then Julia remembered that the pain went away the moment she approached the shrine of St. Luke in the cathedral.

A student at the Moscow Theological Seminary, Evgeniy, returning to his dormitory on a dark evening, was severely beaten by unknown assailants. The bandits threw him to the ground and beat him on the head with sticks. Miraculously, Evgeniy survived; he was discovered by passers-by and taken to the hospital. Doctors gave no chance: many skull fractures, brain contusions. The young man’s fellow students and seminary teachers stood up to pray to the Lord, the Mother of God and St. Luke. As a result, almost hopeless head operations were successful. Soon Evgeniy continued his studies at the seminary, and in his homeland, in Lyubertsy, a home church was opened in the name of St. Luke.

Prayer to Archangel Raphael

Archangel Raphael is considered the heavenly patron of healers. He has the ability to heal both mental and physical ailments.

Oh, holy Archangel Raphael! We earnestly pray to you, be our guide in our lives, save us from all visible and invisible enemies, heal our mental and physical illnesses, guide our lives towards repentance for sin. everyone and to the creation of good deeds. Oh, great holy Raphael the Archangel! Hear us, sinful servants of God (names), praying to you, and grant us in this and the future life to thank and glorify our common Creator to the endless ages of ages. Amen.

Prayer to the holy doctors

Appealing to the saints of God, who performed many miracles during their lifetime, is an effective measure in such a situation. Of course, you can turn to them with a request for healing in your own words, but it is better to read the canonical texts of prayers.

Oh, great saints of Christ and miracle workers Panteleimon, Cosmas and Damian, Cyrus and John, Hermolai, Diomedes, Photios and Anikitos! Hear us praying to you (names). You know our sorrows and illnesses, hear the sighs of the many who come to you. For this reason, we call you as our quick helper and warm prayer book: do not leave us with your intercession with God. We constantly err from the path of salvation, guide us, O merciful mentor. We are weak in faith, strengthen us, teachers of Orthodoxy. We are very fortunate to do good deeds, enrich us, treasures of mercy. We are constantly attacked by enemies, visible and invisible, and embittered, help us, helpless intercessors. Turn away the righteous wrath against us for our iniquities by your intercession at the throne of the Judge of God, to whom you will stand in Heaven, holy and righteous. Hear us, great saints of Christ, calling you with faith, and with your prayers ask the Heavenly Father for forgiveness of our sins and deliverance from troubles. You are helpers, intercessors and prayer makers, and for you we send glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Preparing for surgery

Sisterhood of MC. Tatiana, operating at the Church of the Sovereign Icon of the Mother of God in St. Petersburg, has prepared a leaflet that the sisters distribute to people preparing for surgery. We hope that the words found by the sisters will help other people working and undergoing treatment in hospitals.

Preparing for surgery

The greatest suffering to the soul comes from the news that surgical intervention is inevitable. But everything from the hand of God must be accepted with humility and gratitude. After all, without the will of God, even a hair from a human head cannot fall, as the Lord Himself says. And then there's the whole operation. How to be? First, you need to pray to the Lord to bless the operation, if He pleases, if not, to postpone or postpone it until a good time, that is, at a time when the operation will serve for good, for healing, and not for evil, not for complication or destruction: “Merciful Lord! Hear the prayer of Your sick servant (name), if I need an operation, and for good, then bless, if for evil and destruction, take it away and endure it for a time . Having prayed like this, you must then accept everything that happens calmly and trust God in everything, for there is no prayer that is not heard by the Lord. On the evening before the operation (if it is planned), you should pray for all the sisters and others) so that the Lord would do them with His hands, healing your body: “Lord, remember the doctors who are going to operate on me (names) and do the necessary surgery with Your hands will do it safely. Enlighten and instruct them in everything and help them!” Next, you should read the evening rule, the indicated prayers and go to bed: “Lord, You see my illness. You know how sinful and weak I am (sinful and weak): help me to endure and thank Your goodness. Lord, make this illness a cleansing of many of my sins. Master Lord, I am in Your hands, have mercy on me according to Your will, and, if it is useful for me, heal me quickly. I accept it worthily according to my deeds; remember me, Lord, in Your Kingdom! Thank God for everything!" In the morning, read the prayer rule. From the moment the gurney arrives to take you to the operating room, constant prayer is required. You should pray with short prayers: “Lord, have mercy! God bless! When you are taken to the operating room, do not be embarrassed to make the sign of the cross and cross the operating table. The sign of the cross should be applied with a prayer, which is an invocation to the Most Holy Trinity: “In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen". Humbly, reverently, with the fear of God and hope, and with deep love for the Most Holy Trinity, we conclude this great prayer. What to do with a pectoral cross? Many anesthesiologists (doctors who provide anesthesia) force you to remove the cross. This is explained by several reasons. The first is if the anesthesiologist is an unbeliever; the second is for purely medical reasons: in the event of an unforeseen situation and the need for resuscitation, the cross on the chain cannot be torn off and cannot be cut with scissors, which creates practical inconvenience for resuscitation. The third - an expensive cross on a gold chain - is a temptation for dishonest people, and the attending physician will have to answer for its loss. Therefore, it is recommended to go into surgery with a simple cross on an ordinary simple thread. If you are not allowed to have a cross on your neck, then it can easily be woven into your hair or tied to your hand or one of the fingers of your right hand. There are cases when patients, for lack of any other option, asked anesthesiologists to leave the cross on the anesthesia machine until the end of the operation, and they agreed. The most important thing is to “go into anesthesia” (fall asleep) with the prayer “Lord, have mercy!” or with the Jesus Prayer: “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner,” and with a prayerful petition to your guardian angel. What should be the first words or thoughts of someone who has recovered from anesthesia? Praise be to God and thanks to Him for preserving life and for the operation: “Glory to Thee, God! Glory to You, God! Glory to You, God!” It is very good if you ask the church ministers to light a candle on the day of your operation and pray for you. And having recovered from the operation and strengthened physically, thank God and the Mother of God yourself by coming to the temple for a thanksgiving prayer service. God help you!
