First antiphon

I simply made a practical observation about their correspondence in parallel texts.

Congratulations to everyone on the ongoing holiday of the Nativity of Christ! Exactly ongoing, because the post-celebration of this holiday lasts for seven whole days, which is barely enough to feel this triumph. But I probably won’t write about that.

Many prayers end with these words: “And now, and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen". We hear them so often in prayers that they are perceived as a tail that we cannot live without, although it is not clear why. I will share my perception of these words, and my prayerful experience when they sound.

“Now” marks our century in which we are destined to live. I mean, not to all people, but specifically to me, specifically to those living today. And at this very present time, we want to praise God, bless and pray to Him for His mercy.

By the way, the frequent repetitions of “Him” in prayers, especially in the psalms, are not accidental. After all, by attaching the pronoun “His” to each word, we mean that the object being spoken of (in our case, “mercy”) comes personally from Him. And there is no “mercy” in itself, without God, and cannot be. Mercy is only His, and all those to whom He bestowed it. Here is a good example, which is much better understood if we take into account what is written above: “The mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear Him, and His righteousness is on the sons of sons, who keep His covenant and remember His commandments to do” (Ps. 102, 17-18).

Let's go further. “Prisno” can be understood as the time that was before our life, and which will come after our death. After all, with our death everything continues to be as it was before us. By pointing to the time that came before us, we seem to confirm that we join in the praise of those people who praised God before our lives and, accordingly, will agree with those who will continue this work after us. Moreover, time “forever” even includes the life of those who, after death, remain in Heaven or Hell.

But as we know, Heaven and Hell will not last forever, these abodes of human souls will come to an end. And even time itself will cease to exist. And therefore we should point out the next time - “the ages of ages”, which can be understood as “time”, or rather, eternity, which will come after the End of the world, at the beginning of the Kingdom of Heaven. But since we do not know exactly how many centuries this is, we say “forever and ever.” If you look at old prayers, some prayers simply say “forever. Amen". Apparently, at some time, the Holy Fathers saw some kind of finitude in this, for “forever” can be understood as time that can end after N number of centuries. But since the goal should be to indicate not time, but eternity, they decided to add the word “age” again in the plural. That is, this can be understood as “and for many many centuries.” By the way, Christ himself resorted to this technique, indicating to forgive a brother up to seventy times seventy times. And therefore they began to add “forever and ever,” indicating that there would be many centuries, thousands upon thousands. After the Second Coming of Christ, after the Last Judgment, a new century will begin. And this age will not be a part of something, but a whole that will include parts, eternity itself. Even the word “eternity” is certainly not enough to describe the future age. But let’s not philosophize in vain and move on.

Great Litany

Then the deacon pronounces the great litany (in Greek - “strengthened petition”): Let us pray to the Lord in peace.

The word world also has the meaning of “universe” and more narrowly: “the human race” and “community of believers” (compare with modern laity). There was another word “peace” - the same one that the priest pronounces in the exclamation Peace to all! and which we hear in the subsequent words of the deacon at the great litany: Let us pray to the Lord for peace from above and the salvation of our souls, for the peace of the whole world - with the meaning of “peace, peace of spirit.” For convenience, in distinguishing these homonym words in Church Slavonic grammar, they even introduced a rule: the world as “universe” was written through i (and short), and the world as “peace” - through and ordinary. Thus, the deacon calls to prayer the members of the Christian community gathered in this church, and in the future - all people in the universe.
