Most of the chants heard as part of Orthodox worship arose thanks to authors of Greek origin. Which is not surprising. Christian songwriters of Byzantium studied the best works of ancient playwrights. When composing church hymns, they used the proven principles of ancient poetry. However, it was not only the Greeks who contributed to the development of worship. There was also a place for Syrian church poets. Among the works they composed there is, for example, a chant named after the first words - “Vouchsafe, Lord.” Priest Anthony Borisov talks about the meaning of this prayer.

The prayer “Grant, O Lord,” originated in Syria around the sixth century. In Constantinople it was adopted later - around the 12th century. Nowadays, “Grant, O Lord,” is performed daily as part of the evening service. The first part of the prayer sounds like this: “Grant, Lord, that this evening we may be preserved without sin. Blessed art thou, O Lord, God of our fathers, and praised and glorified is thy name forever. Amen . This part of the prayer says that the Lord will allow us to spend the evening of the passing day without sin. The second part of “Lord Vouchsafe” looks like this: “O Lord, be Thy mercy upon us, as we trust in Thee . It can be translated into Russian as follows: “May Your mercy, O Lord, be upon us, because we trust in You.” In other words, this part of the prayer contains a request that God's mercy always be with us. Here is the third part of “Lord Vouchsafe” - “Blessed art thou, O Lord, teach me by Thy justification. Blessed art thou, O Lord, enlighten me with thy justification. Blessed art thou, O Holy One, enlighten me with Thy justifications . In this part of the prayer, the Persons of the Holy Trinity are listed under special names - God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. God the Father is called here Lord, God the Son is called Master, and the Holy Spirit is called Holy. This part of the prayer contains a request to God to justify us from the sins that we committed during the day. The fourth part goes like this: “Lord, Thy mercy endures forever: do not despise the work of Thy hand. Praise is due to You, singing is due to You, glory is due to You, Father and Son and Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen . This part says that God’s mercy will always be with people and that the Lord will not leave “the creation of His works”, that is, us, without care. The prayer “Lord grant” ends with a special glorification of God.

The prayer “Grant, O Lord” is well known not only in the Orthodox Church. As part of the evening service, it is sung in the churches of the Coptic and Ethiopian churches, which are not in communion with Orthodoxy, but also have an ancient history. The litany, therefore, is a repetition of the great litany (as in the liturgy of the Apostolic Constitutions, the liturgy, close to our great one and placed before the consecration of the Gifts, is repeated after them), but with the addition of intensely prayerful and sorrowful repentant petitions at the beginning and end . Such additions were to grow in further monuments, in later liturgies; such an element in this litany actually increases, but is concentrated mainly at the beginning of it. Even more than the Great Litany, the Sublime Litany has one common story in all liturgies, coinciding to the point of literalness, as we will see, in the liturgies of St. James, Basil the Great, John Chrysostom in the same manuscripts and endlessly varying in the same liturgy of different eras. Therefore, the next (if not previous) formula after the above in the order of development can be recognized as given in one ancient edition of the liturgy of St. John Chrysostom.

Apparently, at the same stage of development, i.e., separation from the great litany, stands the special litany at the liturgy of St. John Chrysostom in Sinai. Euhol. 1153 No. 979:

“Let us all sing... Lord Almighty... Do not want death... Rich in mercy... Have mercy on us... More about our most pious and God-protected kings and subjugate under the nose... More about the state and peace of Christians, the deliverance of the captives, the healing of the weak, and the repose in the faith of the departed... More about the servant of God N, health... There are even fewer elements from the great litany and more closeness to the current special litany in the most ancient of Greek. Euchologians giving litanies (and not just the prayers of the priest), in Euchologia Imp. Publ. bib. Since the 15th century in the Missals of both Greek and Slavic, approximately the current composition of the special litany and the current order of petitions on it are established, at least for the first 4 petitions; the remaining petitions also all appear from this time, but with great fluctuations in their number, order and sometimes in the text. No. 899 of the 17th century and printed Moscow editions of the 17th century), obviously stands here in connection with the petition for an entire people whose prosperity is associated with royal government. Moreover: the same RKP. and the publications after this petition have another petition for the Tsar and Tsarina, but not about governance, but about their personal well-being (perhaps as patron descendants). Then both Greek and Slav. RKP. have an independent petition “for († all) employees and those who served in St. of this monastery († about health and salvation)” (rkp. (and for all Christians?).” In the ancient (XV century) RKP. instead of this petition, and in several later ones (XV-XVI centuries) together with it, after it, there is the current last petition, which in its original form must have contained a petition only for those bearing fruit (see above, p. 572); Euhol. Imp. Publ. bib. No. 109 XII-XIII centuries. reads it in an unfinished, however, form: “and about those bearing fruit”; others “about all the upcoming ones”; it receives its current form in the RKP. XV-XVI centuries after the following increments, indicated by brackets: (“We still pray” or “and”) for those who bear fruit (and do good) in the Holy. (and all-honorable) temple of this, (watching, working and singing and) for the people ahead, waiting for You (or “from the Lord”) rich (or: “great”, later both) mercy (late Slavic RKP. : “about health and salvation”). After this petition in no. RKP. XIV-XVI centuries there was also the last petition, “(we still pray) (for all the brethren and) for (all) (pious and) Orthodox Christians” (late glory: “for health and salvation”)2270. The litany at the liturgy of Basil the Great and John Chrysostom sometimes differs in composition, preserving traces of greater antiquity in the former2271.

Along with such relatively extensive editions after the Gospel litany through a number of Greek. manuscripts undergo a homogeneous short edition, reducing the litany first to 5 petitions, and then to 4. So in one day. RKP.2272 XI-XII centuries: “Let us all sing... Lord Almighty... God have mercy on us... We also pray for the forgiveness of the sins of the hieromonk and all the brethren in Christ... We also pray for all those who serve and have served in St. this monastery..." Sometimes petitions for the tsar and archbishop were added here, and the last petition was replaced: “for the coming people and those awaiting rich mercies”2273. Such a short version apparently became dominant in Greek. RKP. and accepted for the first printing. Greek ed. The difference with the liturgical liturgy of the Vespers Litany among the Old Believers is only in the 2nd petition for the Tsar, where there are no words about childbearing; on Presanctification liturgy after the 2nd petition for the king, the same petition “for our sovereign and Christ-loving prince, the name of the prince and the noble princess, led. the princess has a name,” and there are no petitions for the abbot and for the upcoming ones2276. Immediately after the prokemna, if there are no paremias (as at an ordinary Sunday vigil, when there is no other celebration, or after paremias, when there are any), the deacon goes to the pulpit and pronounces the so-called “Deep Litany”; in the liturgical books it is called “diligent prayer” . This litany does not have the same beginning in all places of worship where it is pronounced. At Great Vespers in the vigil, it has a full beginning, consisting of two preliminary appeals:

1. We say everything with all our hearts and with all our thoughts; and 2. Lord Almighty, God of our fathers, we pray, hear and have mercy. To these two appeals the face sings: “Lord, have mercy” once. Starting from the very first petition of the litany, with which sometimes this litany begins without the two above-mentioned appeals: Have mercy on us, O God, according to your great mercy, we pray, hear and have mercy; For each petition, of which there are usually only six, the choir sings “Lord, have mercy” three times, which is why the litany is called “subtle”, that is, “zealous”, “diligent” prayer. The special litany always ends with the same exclamation of the priest: for God is merciful and a lover of mankind...

After the special litany at the all-night vigil, the prayer is read: Grant, O Lord, that in this evening we may be preserved without sin... It is, as it were, a continuation of the praise to the Triune God sent up in the evening song “Quiet Light” and ends with the praise of the Most Holy Trinity: Praise befits you, You singing is due, glory is due to You, Father, and Son, and Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages, Amen.

The prayer “Grant, O Lord,” is followed by the so-called “petitionary litany,” beginning with the words: let us fulfill our evening prayer to the Lord. After this appeal comes the petition: Intercede, save, have mercy and preserve us, O God, with your grace. To the first appeal and to this petition the face sings “Lord, have mercy” once, and then six petitions follow, for each of which the face sings “Give, Lord!” in accordance with the final words of each petition, “We ask the Lord!” why this litany itself is called “petitionary.” The petitions of this litany are devoted exclusively to spiritual benefits, and each contains a prayer for the granting of peace, this highest spiritual benefit. It ends, like the great and small litanies, with the surrender of oneself to the will of God, to which the face sings: to you, Lord. The priest concludes the litany with the exclamation: For God is good and a lover of mankind...

Immediately after this exclamation, the priest, continuing to remain in front of the throne, turns his face to the people and teaches: Peace to all, blessing the people with his hand. The priest thus greets those praying with the very good that they have just so earnestly asked for. He teaches this gift, according to the commandment of the Lord Himself, who left us His peace. In the time of the Savior, “Peace” was a common greeting, and it was His favorite (see John 14:27), and He commanded that peace be greeted to all who seek peace (Matt. 10:12-13).
