And deliver me, Lord, from vain thoughts that defile me, and from evil lusts. For Yours is the kingdom, and the power and the glory, of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and forever and to the ages of ages. Amen.

Prayer 2, Saint Antiochus, to our Lord Jesus Christ

To the Almighty, Word of the Father, who is perfect himself, Jesus Christ, for the sake of Your mercy, never leave me, Your servant, but always rest in me. Jesus, good Shepherd of Your sheep, do not betray me to the sedition of the serpent, and do not leave me to the desire of Satan, for the seed of aphids is in me. You, O Lord God, worship the Holy King, Jesus Christ, by sleeping me, preserve with an unflickering light, by Your Holy Spirit, in Whom You sanctified Your disciples. Grant, Lord, to me, Thy unworthy servant, too, Thy salvation on my bed: enlighten my mind with the light of the mind of Thy Holy Gospel, my soul with the love of Thy Cross, my heart with the purity of words Yours, my body with your passionless passion, preserve my thought with your humility, and raise My time is like Your praise. For thou art glorified with Thy Eternal Father and with the Most Holy Spirit forever. Amen.

RULES OF EVENING PRAYER

In order for words to have the desired effect, you must pray according to certain rules. Here are the main ones:

  • You need to pray with maximum concentration, driving away extraneous thoughts. You must feel that you are communicating with the Creator, so you cannot allow yourself to be distracted;
  • For beginners, the prayer for the coming sleep can be quite short. You can even independently come up with sincere words coming from the heart: it is not the order of words that is important, but the feelings that will be put into them;
  • It is advisable to pray before going to bed as in olden times: with the whole family. This can become a unifying tradition that will bring family members even closer to each other;
  • The basic rule of evening prayer before bed: the text should contain a brief mention of people dear to you. Ask God to give them his mercy, guide them on the right path and help them solve difficult problems.

Prayer 3, to the Holy Spirit

Lord, Heavenly King, Comforter, Soul of truth, have mercy and have mercy on me, Your sinful servant, and release me to the unworthy, and forgive all that You have sinned today as a man, especially and not like a man, but also worse than cattle, my free sins and involuntary, known and unknown: those who are evil from youth and science, and those who are evil from insolence and despondency. If I swear by Your name, or blaspheme in my thoughts; or reproach someone; or slandered someone with my anger, or made me sad, or became angry about something; either he lied, or he slept in vain, or he came to me as a beggar and despised him; or I made my brother sad, or I got married, or I condemned someone; or became proud, or became proud, or became angry; or I stand in prayer, my mind is moved by the wickedness of this world, or the corruption of my thoughts; or got too drunk, or got drunk, or laughed madly; either I had evil thoughts, or I saw someone else’s kindness, and my heart was wounded by it; or dissimilar to the verbs, or they laughed at my brother’s sin, but mine is an innumerable sin; Or I didn’t remember about prayer, or I don’t remember what other evil things I did, because I did everything and more than these. Have mercy on me, my Creator Master, Thy despondent and unworthy servant, and leave me, and let me go, and forgive me, for I am Good and Lover of Mankind, so that I may lie down in peace, sleep and rest, O prodigal sinner. I am the accursed and accursed one, and I will worship and sing , and I will glorify Your most honorable name, with the Father and His Only Begotten Son, now and ever and unto ages. Amen.

Under what circumstances should you read the short evening rule?

Evening prayers cannot be postponed until the next day. In this case, there is a danger of destroying the spiritual mood through temptations, passions and laziness. Sometimes circumstances arise due to which a person cannot read a complete prayer with awareness, letting every word pass through himself. In such cases, shortened evening prayers will help.

Short evening prayers before bed are suitable:

  • those who, due to external circumstances, have neither the strength nor the time left for full prayer, and those who understand that reading a prayer hastily and superficially does not make sense;
  • those who work on a rotational basis and whose duty is in the evening or at night;
  • for beginning Christians (a shortened version in Russian is allowed)
  • Orthodox parishioners, whose evening prayer is selected individually with their confessor and reflects the experiences going on in the heart of the believer.

Prayer 9, to the Most Holy Theotokos, Peter of Studium

To Thee, Most Pure Mother of God, I fall down and wretchedly pray: Believe me, Queen, for I continually sin and anger Thy Son and my God, and many times, even if I repent, I find a lieu before God I repent and tremble: will the Lord strike me, and hour by hour I do the same again? ; These leaders, my Lady, Lady Theotokos, I pray, have mercy, strengthen, and grant me good deeds. Believe me, my Lady Theotokos, as I hate my evil deeds, and with all my thoughts I love the law of my God; But we do not know, Most Pure Lady, from where I even hate, I also love, but I transgress what is good. Do not allow, O Most Pure One, my will to be accomplished, for it is not pleasing, but let the will of Thy Son and my God be done: may He save me, and enlighten me, and give me the grace of the Holy Spirit, so that the square may cease from now on activities, etc. I would have lived in command To Your Son, to Him belongs all glory, honor and power, with His Beginning Father, and His Most Holy and Good and Life-giving Spirit, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, prayers for the sake of Your Most Pure Mother, our reverend and God-bearing fathers and all the saints, have mercy on us. Amen.

Prayer of Saint John of Damascus

Master, Lover of Mankind, will this coffin really be my bed, or will you still enlighten my damned soul during the day? For seven the grave lies ahead, for seven death awaits. I fear Your judgment, Lord, and endless torment, but I do not stop doing evil: I always anger You, the Lord my God, and Your Most Pure Mother, and all the Heavenly Powers, and the holy angel my keeper. We know, Lord, that I am unworthy of Your love for mankind, but I am worthy of all condemnation and torment. But, Lord, either I want it or I don’t want it, save me. If you save the righteous, nothing great; and even if You have pure mercy, nothing is marvelous: for you are worthy of Your mercy. But astonish Thy mercy on me, a sinner: for this show Thy love for mankind, so that my malice may not overcome Thy ineffable goodness and mercy: and as You will, arrange a thing for me.

Enlighten my eyes, O Christ God, lest I fall asleep into death, lest my enemy say: I have strengthened myself against him.

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.

Be the protector of my soul, O God, as I walk in the midst of many nets; deliver me from them and save me, O Blessed One, as the Lover of Mankind.

And now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Let us ceaselessly sing with our hearts and lips, the glorious Mother of God, and the most holy angel, this Mother of God, confessing that she truly gave birth to God incarnate for us, and who prays unceasingly for our souls.

Mark yourself with a cross and say a prayer to the Honorable Cross:

May God rise again, and may His enemies be scattered, and may those who hate Him flee from His presence. Like smoke disappears, let them disappear; As wax melts in the presence of fire, so let demons perish on behalf of those who love God and sign the sign of the cross, and say in joy: Rejoice, Most Honest and Life-Giving Cross of the Lord, driving away and the demons have the power upon you of our Lord Jesus Christ, who descended into hell and trampled underfoot the power the devil, and who gave us Your Honest Cross to drive away every adversary. Oh, Most Honest and Life-Giving Cross of the Lord! Help me with the Holy Virgin Mary and with all the saints forever. Amen.

Or briefly:

Protect me, Lord, by the power of Your Honest and Life-giving Cross, and save me from all evil.

Prayer

Ease, forgive, forgive, O God, our sins, voluntary and involuntary, even in word and in deed, even in knowledge and not in knowledge, even in days and in nights, even in mind and in thought: forgive us all, I Ko Blag and Lover of Humanity.

Prayer

Forgive those who hate and offend us, O Lord, the Lover of Mankind. Do good to those who do charity. Grant to our brothers and relatives the same petition for salvation and eternal life. Visit those who are infirm and grant healing. Manage the sea too. For those who travel, travel. Contribute to Orthodox Christians. Grant forgiveness of sins to those who serve and have mercy on us. Have mercy on those who commanded us unworthy to pray for them according to the greatness of Your mercy. Remember, Lord, first of all our fathers and brothers who have fallen asleep and give them rest, where the light of Your countenance shines. Remember, Lord, our captive brothers and deliver me from every situation. Remember, Lord, those who bear fruit and do good in Your holy churches, and give them also petitions for salvation and eternal life. Remember, Lord, us, humble and sinful and unworthy Thy servants, and enlighten our minds with the light of Thy understanding, and guide us on the path of Thy commandments, through the prayers of our Most Pure Lady Bogoro Mother and Ever-Virgin Mary and all Your saints: for blessed art Thou unto the ages of ages . Amen.

Everyday confession of sins

I confess to You, my Lord God and Creator, in the One Holy Trinity, glorified and worshiped, Father and Son and Holy Spirit, all my sins, which I have committed all the days of my life, and for every hour, both in the present time, and in previous days and nights, deed, word, thought, gluttony, drunkenness, secret eating, idle talk, despondency, laziness, discord, disobedience, slander, condemnation, neglect, pride, avarice, rapacity negligence, inconsistency, filthiness, money-grabbing, jealousy, envy, anger, malice , hatred, covetousness and all my feelings: sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch and my other sins, mental and physical, in the image of You, my God and Creator of wrath. , and my neighbor who are untruthful: regretting these, I blame myself for You, my God I imagine, and I have the will to repent: then, Lord my God, help me, with tears I humbly pray to Thee: I have passed over my sins by Thy mercy, forgive me, and forgive me from all these, even if I have blotted them out Allah is before You, for He is Good and Lover of Mankind.

When you go to bed, say:

In Your hand, Lord Jesus Christ, my God, I commend my spirit: You bless me, You have mercy on me and grant me eternal life. Amen.

Lord, know that you do as you will, that your will be done even in me, a sinner, for blessed are you forever. Amen.

Why do you need to read prayers before going to bed?

There is a certain rhythm of prayer intended for monastics and spiritually experienced lay people, for example, they may use a rosary.

But for those who have recently come to the Church and are just beginning their prayer journey, it is quite difficult to read it in its entirety. And it happens that unforeseen situations arise for the laity when there is too little opportunity and time for prayer.

Icon of the Mother of God of Kazan

In this case, it is better to read the short rule than to mindlessly and without reverence jabber the full text.

Often, confessors bless beginners to read several prayers, and then, after 10 days, add one prayer to the rule every day. Thus, the skill of prayer reading is formed gradually and naturally.

Important! Any prayer request will be supported by Heaven when a person directs his activities to serving God and people.

Prayer 8, to our Lord Jesus Christ

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, for the sake of Thy most honorable Mother, and Thy bodiless Angels, Thy Prophet and Forerunner and Baptist, God-speaking apostles, bright and good-willed ones Today, martyr, holy and God-bearing father, and through the prayers of all saints, deliver me from my present demonic situation. Yes, my Lord and Creator, do not want the sinner to die, but as he turned and lived, grant me conversion too, the accursed and unworthy; take me away from the mouth of the destructive serpent, who yawns to devour me and bring me to hell alive. How to read evening prayers?

The difficulty of evening prayer may lie in fatigue or inexperience. Either a short rule for evening prayers or moving prayers to an earlier time will help here. It is possible not only to read the evening prayer before bed, but also before dinner. Knowing the basic prayers helps not only reduce the time it takes to read them, but also help you feel the words of the prayer.

You can read short evening prayers either alone or with the whole family - each family has its own principles. The order of reading the prayer in the evening is approximately this;

  • seclude yourself, stand in front of an icon if possible, light a candle or lamp;
  • cleanse your soul of anger, irritation and resentment of the past day, tune in to a conversation with God;
  • make the sign of the cross;
  • read one or more prayers.

The evening prayer ritual allows the Orthodox to think about his own actions, feelings and thoughts of the passing day. They allow you to set your soul on the true path, accept the events that have happened with repentance and humility, and, through a heart open to God, lovingly accept the actions of those around you.

Prayer 9, to the Most Holy Theotokos, Peter of Studium (†IX)

To Thee, Most Pure Mother of God, I fall down and wretchedly pray: Believe me, Queen, for I continually sin and anger Thy Son and my God, and many times, even if I repent, I find a lieu before God Behold, and I repent, trembling: will not the Lord strike me, and again every hour? I create; These leaders, my Lady, Lady Theotokos, I pray, have mercy, strengthen, and grant me good deeds. I would have lived in command To Your Son, to Him belongs all glory, honor and power, with His Beginning Father, and His Most Holy and Good and Life-giving Spirit, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Prayer rule for the laity

The meaning of the expression is a sequence of prayers of a certain content for worship in the world, outside the church. Compliance with the Prayer Rule means daily turning to God to maintain spiritual contact with him.

In the Russian Orthodox Church, the Prayer Rule consists of several sections:

  • in the morning after night;
  • as night approaches;
  • daily reading of parts from the Holy Scriptures, Psalms, Gospels;
  • prayer requests during the day (before and after meals, before a trip, starting any business);
  • prayers before communion (before and after).

They read prayers with the whole family or individually, out loud, silently, listening to an audio recording. Violation of the Prayer Rule (irregular prayers or exceeding their number) leads to falling away from God. The soul and heart become deaf to the prayers offered.

The daily prayer rule for each believer may differ in scope.

The main thing is not the amount of time spent on prayer, but sincerity and spiritual dedication when praying. In any case, daily prayer ennobles the soul, even if it is said without proper mental concentration.

Prayer 11, to the holy Guardian Angel

To the Angel of Christ, my holy guardian and patron of my soul and body, forgive me in all respects that I have sinned this day, and deliver me from all the wickedness of the enemy who opposes me, so that I may not sin in any way. I venerate my God; but pray for me, a sinful and unworthy servant, that you may show me worthy of the goodness and mercy of the All-Holy Trinity and the Mother of my Lord Jesus Christ and all the saints. Amen.

Kontakion to the Mother of God

To the chosen Voivode, victorious, as having been delivered from the evil ones, let us write thanksgiving to Thy servants, O Mother of God, but as having an invincible power, free us from all troubles, let us call Ti; Rejoice, Unbridled Bride.

Glorious Ever-Virgin, Mother of Christ God, bring our prayer to Your Son and our God, may You save our souls.

I place all my trust in You, Mother of God, keep me under Your roof.

Mother of God Virgin, do not despise me, a sinner, who requires Your help and Your intercession, for my soul trusts in You, and have mercy on me.

Compliance with the rules is the key to discipline

Success in any business requires diligence and consistency. This also applies to spiritual life. With constant work in prayer, Christians receive gracious help from the Lord. Therefore, the Holy Fathers do not advise making “stops” in the feat of prayer. For this reason, morning and evening rules were established.

“Rule! What an accurate name, borrowed from the very effect produced on a person by prayers called the rule! The prayer rule guides the soul correctly and holy, teaches it to worship God in Spirit and Truth (Gospel of John, 4:23). Meanwhile, the soul, left to itself, could not follow the correct path of prayer. Due to her damage and darkening by sin, she would constantly be seduced to the sides, often into the abyss, now into absent-mindedness, now into daydreaming, now into various empty and deceptive ghosts of high prayerful states, created by her vanity and voluptuousness.

Prayer rules keep the person praying in a saving disposition, humility and repentance, teaching him constant self-condemnation, feeding him with tenderness, strengthening him with hope in the All-Good and All-Merciful God, delighting him with the peace of Christ, love for God and for his neighbors" (St. Ignatius Brianchaninov, 1807-1867) .

Prayer of Saint Ioannikios

My hope is the Father, my refuge is the Son, my protection is the Holy Spirit: Holy Trinity, glory to Thee.

It is worthy to eat as the truly blessed Thee, the Mother of God, the Ever-Blessed and Most Immaculate and the Mother of our God. We magnify Thee, the most honorable Cherub and the most glorious without comparison, the Seraphim, who gave birth to God the Word without corruption.

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Lord have mercy. (Thrice)

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, prayers for the sake of Your Most Pure Mother, our reverend and God-bearing fathers and all saints, have mercy on us. Amen.

The spiritual necessity of the prayer rule

According to the teachings of the Orthodox Church, reading morning and evening prayers has an important influence on the soul of a Christian. In spiritual terms, prayer rules are designed to move a person away from night dreams and daytime worries. Regular prayers should tune a person to the desired spiritual “wave”. Otherwise, he will not be able to establish a connection with the Lord. The Holy Fathers say that with the help of the grace of the Holy Spirit, the believer is brought into the necessary state of repentance. Through prayer, and prayer before bed is no exception, a person receives inner peace and tranquility.

Evil spirits are driven away from a Christian, as stated in the Gospel of Matthew (17:21):

“This race is driven out only by prayer and fasting.”

The prayers included in the daily rule were written by generally recognized church authorities. Among them are Saints Basil the Great and John Chrysostom, Saint Macarius the Great and others.

Prayer for the night

Prayer of Saint John of Damascus (c. †780)

Master, Lover of Mankind, will this coffin really be my bed, or will you still enlighten my damned soul during the day? For seven the grave lies ahead, for seven death awaits. I fear Your judgment, Lord, and endless torment, but I do not stop doing evil: I always anger Your Lord my God, and Your Most Pure Mother, and all the heavenly powers, and the holy Angel my keeper. But on me, a sinner, surprise Thy mercy: for this show Thy love for mankind, so that my malice may not overcome Thy ineffable goodness and mercy: and as You will, arrange a thing for me.

Interpretation of basic prayers

Prayerful appeal to the Holy Spirit. It says that he invisibly rules the world, therefore he is equal to God the Father and God the Son. The Holy Spirit, like a ray of sunshine, pierces life, warming and inspiring it. He is called the Comforter in sorrows and illnesses, as he consoled the apostles after the death of Jesus Christ. He teaches you to understand and accept the truth.

Believers ask him to come and help the soul cleanse itself of sin and become saints worthy of the Kingdom of Heaven.

Trisagion Prayer Book. It successively mentions God the Father (Holy God), God the Son (Mighty Holy One), and the Holy Spirit (Holy Immortal One). The word “strong” in this context implies a synonym, omnipotent, like God the Father, although he was mortal. The Holy Spirit is called immortal because it is eternal and gives life to everything on earth and immortality to people.

Prayer to the Holy Trinity, where:

  • “Lord” – God the Father, who cleanses from sins;
  • “Master” – the Son of God, who forgives sins;
  • “Holy” – the Holy Spirit who heals illnesses.

But since God is one, the prayer ends with the words “in your name.” The prayer book to the Honest Cross expresses the belief that crossing oneself is the most effective means of getting rid of demons. The Cross is called “life-giving” because the death of the Savior on the Cross gave people hope for eternal life.

Mark yourself with a cross and say a prayer to the Honorable Cross:

May God rise again, and may His enemies be scattered, and may those who hate Him flee from His presence. Like smoke disappears, let them disappear; As wax melts in the presence of fire, so let demons perish on behalf of those who love God and sign the sign of the cross, and say in joy: Rejoice, Most Honest and Life-Giving Cross of the Lord, driving away and the demons have the power upon you of our Lord Jesus Christ, who descended into hell and trampled upon the power the devil, and who gave us Your Honest Cross to drive away every adversary. Oh, Most Honest and Life-Giving Cross of the Lord! Help me with the Holy Virgin Mary and with all the saints forever. Amen.

Or briefly:

Protect me, Lord, by the power of Your Honest and Life-giving Cross, and save me from all evil.

Prayer 6

Lord our God, in God of faith, and we call upon His name above every name, grant us, as we go to sleep, weakening of soul and body, and keep us from all dreams, and dark sweets except; stop the desire of passions, extinguish the kindling of bodily rebellion. Grant us to live chastely in deeds and words; Yes, a virtuous life is receptive, your promised good things will not fall away, for blessed are you forever. Amen.

The following prayers are unique. They can be read all day long, hourly, one at a time - 24 prayers, according to the number of hours of the day and night. Or just periodically, breaking.

Prayer

Forgive those who hate and offend us, O Lord, the Lover of Mankind. Do good to those who do charity. Grant to our brothers and relatives the same petition for salvation and eternal life. Visit those who are infirm and grant healing. Manage the sea too. For those who travel, travel. Amen.

Short evening prayers

Heavenly King, Comforter, Soul of truth, Who is everywhere and fulfills everything, Treasure of good things and Giver of life, come and dwell in us, and cleanse us from all filth, and save, O Good One, souls ours. Most Holy Trinity, have mercy on us; Lord, cleanse our sins; Master, forgive our iniquities; Holy One, visit and heal our infirmities, for Thy name's sake. Lord have mercy. (Three times). Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Our Father, who art in heaven! Hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, as it is in heaven and on earth. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, just as we forgive our debtors; and do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

Everyday confession of sins

I confess to You, my Lord God and Creator, in the One Holy Trinity, glorified and worshiped, Father and Son and Holy Spirit, all my sins, which I have committed all the days of my life, and for every hour , both at present and in days gone by and nights, deed, word, thought, gluttony, drunkenness, secret eating, idle talk, despondency, laziness, discord, disobedience, slander, condemnation, neglect, pride, avarice, rapacity negligence, inconsistency, filthiness, money-grabbing, jealousy, envy, anger, malice , hatred, covetousness and all my feelings: sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch and my other sins, mental and physical, in the image of You, my God and Creator of wrath. , and my neighbor who are untruthful: regretting these, I blame myself for You, my God I imagine, and I have the will to repent: then, Lord my God, help me, with tears I humbly pray to You: I have passed over my sins by Your mercy, forgive me, and forgive me from all these, even if I have blotted them out lah before You, for He is Good and Lover of Mankind.

When you go to bed, say:

In Your hand, Lord Jesus Christ, my God, I commend my spirit: You bless me, You have mercy on me and grant me eternal life. Amen.

Note

See: What is the “seed of aphids” in the second prayer “for the sleep of those who are to come”?

Interpretation of individual prayers

  • Heavenly King.

In prayer, the Holy Spirit is called the King, because He, like God the Father and God the Son, rules the world and reigns in it. He is a comforter and still provides comfort to those who need it. He guides believers on the righteous path, which is why he is called the Spirit of Truth.

Icon of the Holy Trinity

  • Trisagion.

The petition is addressed to the three hypostases of the Holy Trinity. The heavenly angels sing a great song before the throne of God. God the Father is the Holy God, God the Son is the Holy Almighty. This conversion is due to the victory of the Son over the devil and the destruction of hell. Throughout the prayer, a person asks for permission from sins, healing of spiritual infirmities for the sake of glorifying the Most Holy Trinity.

  • Lord's Prayer.

This is an appeal directly to the Almighty as the Father; we stand before Him as children before their mother and father. We affirm the omnipotence of God and His power, we beg to control human spiritual forces and direct them to the true path, so that after death they will be awarded the honor of being in the Kingdom of Heaven.

About other Orthodox prayers:

  • Prayers for Easter
  • Birthday Prayers
  • Prayers before and after meals
  • Prayer to the Guardian Angel.

He is the Good Spirit for every believer, determined by God Himself. Therefore, praying to Him in the evenings is simply necessary. It is he who will warn against committing sins, help to live holy and will protect the soul and body.

The prayer especially highlights the danger of attacks from bodily enemies (people pushing to commit sin) and incorporeal (spiritual passions).
