About reading the truth

“The descendants of the Red Army soldiers who liberated the world from fascism are responsible for preserving historical memory,” said Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Rus' at the opening ceremony of the XXVIII Christmas readings. “There are more and more untruths about the Second World War, more and more calls are being made to reconsider the significance of the feat of our people and the role of our country, therefore, we, the descendants and successors of the victors, have a huge responsibility to preserve and pass on to future generations the truth about those events.

Russian President Vladimir Putin asked about the same in a telegram to the forum. He emphasized that historical truth holds society together and helps different generations feel like a single nation.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, speaking at the opening, acknowledged that the readings as a social phenomenon “have established themselves as an authoritative platform for the open exchange of opinions.” He noted that the discussion about the Great Victory is important, since “the initiatives and recommendations of the readings give impetus to the strengthening of civil, interethnic and interfaith peace.”

In parallel with the opening of the Christmas readings, the publishing council of the Moscow Patriarchate held a video conference “Modern Russian literature about the Great Patriotic War.” Its topic is the problem of historical memory of the Victory and the formation of a culture of historical memory among young people. The authors of the discussion offer new twists on the topic - how modern literature about war resists the falsification of history and how it reflects the participation of Russian soldiers in modern peacekeeping operations.

It presents the best works of children - winners of the XV international children's competition "The Beauty of God's World". 3115 works from Russia, Moldova, Ukraine, Belarus, Cyprus and Argentina took part in it.

“Worthy works of modern culture need information support,” says Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Rus'. “They contribute to the preservation of national historical memory. Art influences the worldview of people of any age, which is why it is so important that the impact be constructive and not destructive.

The XXVIII International Christmas Educational Readings will last at more than 10 venues in Moscow until January 29.

Conversations with the priest. Christmas educational readings

Audio

In the Yekaterinburg studio of our TV channel, the chairman of the Department of Religious Education and Catechesis of the Yekaterinburg Diocese, priest Andrei Shchukin, answers questions. – Father, I congratulate you on the beginning of the Nativity Fast.
- Heartfelt thanks. The time of the Nativity Fast is a very joyful time, bringing us closer to the holiday of the Nativity of Christ.

– And we have another joy - just recently the opening of the Christmas readings took place.

- Yes. Regional stage of the International Christmas educational readings in the Yekaterinburg Metropolis. The plenary session was held on November 27, thus, this forum began its work. It continues its work now in our region, the next – international – stage will take place in Moscow, where people will gather not only from all over Russia. A lot of people always come to Moscow for Christmas readings, for whom the theme of the readings is an important topic in their life and work.

– This year everything took place in a new format.

– Yes, of course, we are now working remotely. Some of the participants in the plenary session joined the conference and went on air remotely, but the main broadcast took place from the “Russia - My History” park. Sverdlovsk region". Metropolitan Kirill of Yekaterinburg and Verkhoturye came to the park, and there were also honorary participants in the Christmas readings: Vice-Governor of the Sverdlovsk Region Sergei Yuryevich Bidonko and Deputy Plenipotentiary Representative of the President of the Russian Federation in the Ural Federal District Viktor Petrovich Dubenetsky.

The forum is very serious. The theme of this year's Christmas readings is dedicated to the 800th anniversary (celebration of this date will be in 2021) of the birth of the blessed Prince Alexander Nevsky. This is a massive event; it is not only church, but also state; Accordingly, the Christmas readings forum is associated with this topic. The regional stage of the Christmas readings for the diocese and metropolis is the entry point into this topic associated with the blessed prince Alexander Nevsky. We not only remember his life, his activities, his exploits, but for us his time is very important, since it connects us with the values by which we live today.

The theme of the Christmas readings is “Alexander Nevsky: West and East. Historical memory of the people." The topic is connected with the historical memory of the people, with man, with how from generation to generation we pass on some experience, some values. This is a very important conversation in the context of the 21st century. A changing age; For us, every year is, in fact, a whole decade. Therefore, this is a very relevant conversation not only for people who are familiar with this topic and work in it (specialists, historians, and cultural experts are involved in the Christmas readings). But since the theme of the Christmas readings is still educational, it is very important for the adult who is on the front line.

– We are talking about a simple teacher, educator.

- Yes. Because in fact, the fate of the country is decided there - when our children meet their teacher in kindergarten or school; when a teacher accompanies a child on his educational path to personal happiness. This is a very important point.

The blessed Prince Alexander Nevsky is a kind of guide to our personal feat, to our personal happiness. We must understand that his time is not an old time at all. We think: “Eight hundred years have passed! We are completely different now. What can we learn there?..” But in fact, that time was very similar to ours, then people were faced with the same problems that we are facing now. And some problems and issues were resolved not only within the state, but also on a personal level. Problems of communication, dialogue, relationships are related to our everyday life. And the personality of the noble prince can really help us.

Therefore, Christmas readings attract a huge number of different people. For example, this year, for the first time, the consuls general of the countries that work here in the city of Yekaterinburg participated in the Christmas meetings at the regional stage. We talked with diplomats about how they understand dialogue, how they build this dialogue in the context of their work or in the context of the situation in which their country is developing, as part of their work in the Russian Federation. Do not think that this is some kind of useless coverage of this topic; on the contrary, this is a very important point, because sometimes our personal is seen in something great. Sometimes we cannot understand our neighbor, although we seem to speak the same language. Therefore, we need in life a collision with something great, with some situation that could turn us around, showing our personal situation from the other side.

The plenary discussion that we had was related precisely to how dialogue is built between countries and between specific people. This is the key to understanding. We must understand that the regional stage of the Christmas readings is the beginning of this discussion. And most importantly, the Christmas readings are aimed precisely at how this topic will resonate in secondary schools in the context of a conversation between a teacher and his students.

- Correct me if I'm wrong. It seems to me that when they talk about these kinds of activities, events, they often think that this is just some kind of formality: they completed it, reported and forgot. But if you start to understand the topic, a lot will open up. After all, the materials that were presented, including at this conference, reveal in a new way what we seem to know. But it turns out we don’t really know...

– Christmas readings are an acquaintance (even if now remote) with the experiences of different people. Of course, now, in the 21st century, we associate our participation in some event with how we pay attention to it. This is a feature of our time. For example, a person walks past some kind of exhibition (even in a shopping center, not necessarily in a museum) and stops his gaze on some painting. From a modern point of view, the meeting took place: he paid attention to the painting, it interested him, and it entered his life.

We must understand that now we are encountering some kind of novelty, some kind of beauty, some kind of magnitude in exactly this way. This is what overtakes us, and it may not last very long, but the meeting occurs, and then the person can do something with this novelty, he continues to work with it. He may not do anything; In our time, it is already important that a person listened to this topic. Perhaps this topic will open up a little later, when he meets with some more information, with some other person and discovers something else for himself.

I'll give you an example from my personal life. For me, the theme of Alexander Nevsky began to play in a very special way when I arrived in the ancient city of Pereslavl-Zalessky, where the prince lived. On the excursion we were shown a temple in which an interesting rite of passage took place, so to speak. This is when a boy lives with his father, with men who raise him as a warrior. This is a very interesting episode in the life of the prince. Suddenly I realized that this event opened up for me in a completely different way not only the life of the prince, but, in fact, my life as a person. Because there are some events that transfer us from one state to another, and it is no longer possible to return back.

For example, for a clergyman, ordination is a very serious moment. Many priests discover the moment of ordination several years after everything has happened, when some path has already been traveled. I remember one of the clergy said how he was riding on the subway and realized that he was already a priest; and it horrified him. That is, some depth has opened up. This is a very important point.

What happens when we come into contact with history? It seems that we know everything about Alexander Nevsky. But when we come into contact with the place where he lived, with the temple he went to, we begin to discover the people with whom he lived (father, his relatives, who, of course, influenced him), we suddenly discover a whole world. And not only the world of other people, but also your own world. Because in the life of every person there are moments that transfer him from one status to another: when we begin to grow up, when we think about a feat, about a profession. And so on and so forth. There are things that are revealed precisely after contact with some great people. Without a doubt, the holy noble prince Alexander Nevsky is a great man.

– In everyday life, as children or teenagers, we also meet people who greatly influence us. For example, these are teachers. Now I’m talking in the broad sense of the word, and not just about a specific Russian language teacher, for example, or a Sunday school group. After all, a teacher is little more than a person who imparts a certain segment of knowledge...

- Yes. There is a serious problem in education today. We all understand and realize that teaching is not work, it is service. There are professions that cannot be perceived as work. Yes, of course, without a doubt, people should receive compensation for their work. But it is impossible to measure their work. These include doctors, priests, teachers, and military personnel. This is what it says about the military: they serve the Fatherland. There are people who cannot work, they can serve; this is their calling. That is, a person must grow up to this.

In the 21st century, we are faced with situations when a person does not want to perceive his activity in which he is engaged as service; it is more convenient for him to perceive it as work. This is a serious problem, and it exists in every generation of people. There are people who are truly sons and daughters of the Fatherland. The Savior in the Gospel speaks of this as about shepherds and mercenaries. This mercenaryism (in any profession) robs us of not only earthly, but also eternal rewards. We must have some moments that reboot our activities, our ministry. And one of these moments is when someone comes into our life; this person (or event) becomes a guide for us to a completely different perception of our personal life.

That is, we meet Alexander Nevsky, but find ourselves alone with ourselves, and suddenly a depth opens up in us that we have not seen. We would never have seen this depth if not for Saint Alexander Nevsky (or any other saint). In general, the Nativity Fast is full of the memory of saints; we meet with different saints during this period. For example, the Holy Great Martyr Catherine (she is the patroness of education) comes into our lives, and suddenly education in general and our personal education open up for us in a different way.

We understand that we cannot cope with some things now, but if each of us can discover some certain depth within ourselves, there is a chance that life will begin to change. And when life around changes, in the gospel understanding this is the Kingdom of God, which people will see without tasting death. Metropolitan Anthony of Sourozh speaks about this.

- I have a question. Formally, we complete our studies after we leave the walls of higher or secondary educational institutions. There is a very small percentage of people who then retrain and receive additional education. That is, at some point, we, adults, stop being in touch with the educational process, forgetting the knowledge that we received, forgetting about how to study in general. It is very difficult to return to some new knowledge; for example, take it and start studying astronomy...

– We live in very interesting times. On the one hand, we suffer from distance communication. This is a serious problem that I won’t talk about now because people are still going through it. On the other hand, it is now possible to receive an education remotely (I’m not talking about school or even higher education institutions), when people already have a profession and work in their profession. There are a lot of opportunities to take some courses with some specific great people in this profession, in this line of work.

– With real professionals.

- Yes. This is our ongoing education, when we do not stop this process, but allow other experiences in one specialty or another, in some topic, to discover something new in us. Of course, doing this remotely is very convenient. I’m surprised by this because I remember a time when all this didn’t exist...

– There weren’t even electronic libraries.

– I remember we typed some texts on a typewriter. This time is very close for me. But now we can listen to lectures from different universities, both Russian and foreign, listen to professors in translation or not in translation. That is, we have certain successes in this direction, when information is quickly transmitted about some discoveries, about some novelty that researchers and testers discover in this world. And it's just wonderful. This is our ongoing education.

It is much more difficult when you achieve a certain professional level, because then it is impossible without meeting a real person. These people are guides in our profession, activity, in our life, in our love. There are people who are very important to us. What do we discover when we meet truly great people? We see the light of these people. Great people continue to live in the life of another person. We understand that this is a truly great man, because he lives by love, faith, hope, and the feat of our ancestors. This is the historical memory of the people; it is transmitted.

– Wonderful park “Russia – my history”...

- Good project.

– Amazing project! I, to my shame, have never been there for several years of its existence, but this year I visited. There was an opportunity to walk through the halls and have a look. I thought I'd just go in and have a look, but to be honest, I couldn't tear myself away. I walked around the entire second floor. The topic was dedicated to the Great Patriotic War and Victory. Now you are talking about how a meeting with a great person changes something in yourself, and I understand that these images, some thoughts, still live in me. What’s stopping you from telling your friends: “Guys, there’s such a wonderful park - let’s go have a look, we’ll learn a lot there”?

– We live in completely different times. Previously, the text changed us: we opened the book - and the text changed us. Then we began to interpret the texts. At the moment, people are a little tired of interpreting texts, and now, in 2021, we understand that we now need another “window” to look at what was, what will be, and what is. We need a different vantage point.

Such cultural parks are when we enter the topic through a picture. I really enjoyed the park “Russia – My History”. I liked how the topic related to our Sverdlovsk intelligence officer Kuznetsov was revealed; how it was revealed, how it was told. This is a man who not only accomplished his feat during the war. This is a man who lived next to us, grew up the same way we grew up. This is a person who received an education. But what did he do with this education? After all, he was a scout...

– Yes, he applied this knowledge.

– That is, we are discovering an amazing person.

It’s one thing when we come across some thing that belonged to a person... Let’s say we come to Moscow, go to the Historical Museum and see there a helmet (or sword) that belonged to one of the warriors of Ancient Rus'. And this is a contact with the history of that person. And here is another entry point, a different position from which we enter the topic, and we also need to be able to organize this correctly. There are really serious specialists working in the park, interested people help them, and they create wonderful exhibitions.

In general, such parks are not designed for a person to see everything at once. I saw the same park in Moscow: you have to come there more than once. It is very interesting. We are now changing the format of discovering some new information for ourselves. This is one of the modern and quite effective ways of discovering something great and important.

– We talked to you about Christmas readings. For those who are interested, how can you get to know the information more closely and in more detail?

– On the website “Christmas-readings-ural.rf” you can watch the entire plenary meeting (live broadcast) exactly as it developed. You must understand that the site dedicated to the Christmas readings here in the Urals, in the Yekaterinburg Metropolitanate, will be supplemented with some news about how the Christmas readings are developing and how it is opening up in people’s lives.

“Christmas readings help to understand what should be done to strengthen faith in the lives of the people”

His Holiness Patriarch Kirill

On January 26, 2021, on the 32nd Sunday after Pentecost, after Epiphany, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Rus' celebrated the Divine Liturgy in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow. The service preceded the work of the XXVIII International Christmas educational readings “The Great Victory: Heritage and Heirs.” At the end of the Liturgy, the Primate of the Russian Church addressed those gathered in the church with the Primate’s word.

Your Eminences and Graces! Dear bishops, fathers, mother abbess, monks, nuns! Brothers and sisters! Representatives of the Orthodox intelligentsia! All those who make up the body of the wonderful meeting of the Russian Church called the Christmas Readings!

For many years after the death of St. Tikhon, Patriarch of All-Russia, no church-wide meetings, with the exception of those prescribed by the Charter, were held - only Councils and meetings of the Synod. In modern times, we have achieved the opportunity to form a new institution with the participation of the episcopate, clergy and laity and called it the Inter-Council Presence. But before the era that opened up new possibilities for conciliar life, it was the Christmas readings that were the platform on which the spirit of conciliar discussion was practiced and improved.

I remember well that the first Christmas readings were accompanied by many problems - both from the point of view of leadership, and from the point of view of ideological content, and from the point of view of people’s readiness to gather for these readings. But by the grace of God, the difficulties of the first stage have long passed, and today the Christmas readings are a wonderful example of the activity of all those who are actively working for the good of the Russian Orthodox Church, those who have largely identified themselves with the Church. We see a desire to meet, discuss important problems, develop a methodology for working together, and I am also happy because the focus of the Christmas readings is always on such an important sector of our church life as spiritual and religious education.

In a sense, the Christmas readings have become an unofficial quasi-local Council, because everyone is present at them - the episcopate, the clergy, the monastics, and the laity. This meeting, of course, does not have the canonical power of a Local Council, but it has potential equal to or approaching the potential of the Council. That is why I always pay special attention to holding Christmas readings. How often the speakers at these readings help me understand, both for me as the Patriarch and, I am sure, for the episcopate and clergy, what needs to be done today to strengthen the Orthodox faith in the life of our people, so that the Word of God reaches the hearts of people, so that as many young people as possible come to the Church so that we will eventually stop being called the “Church of Older Women.” Of course, few people can attend our everyday services except pensioners and retired women, but today they are trying to broadcast this image to the entire Church, and behind this the conclusion is offered: look, after all, all this is probably a thing of the past!

Our Christmas readings completely dispel this myth, because here, within the walls of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, our activists gather, working to resolve the most pressing issues in the field of relations between the Church and society. Of course, the most important direction of this work is education, including teaching the fundamentals of Orthodox culture in schools and, in general, teaching in secondary educational institutions, including electives, subjects that can open up our youth’s ideas about spiritual life, the role and significance of Churches. All this is being accomplished quite successfully with your help, my dears, with the help of all those who are present here today.

To summarize, I would like to say: you are doing one of the most important things that exists not only in the Church, but also in the world. Through your word, relying on your life experience, on your faith, you pass on such knowledge to people, primarily children and youth, which helps them connect faith and culture, faith and knowledge, to become modern Orthodox people who cannot be frightened by any scientific formulas . Because we are raising a generation that has a taste for science, has a high level of knowledge, and combines this knowledge with a deep Orthodox faith. In other words, what is happening today in the educational system of the Russian Orthodox Church is aimed not only at preparing children for life in the Church, for liturgical participation in this life, but also at the formation of a new person - an Orthodox person, devoted to the Lord with all the strength of his soul and at the same time possessing modern knowledge, a cultured person, ready to conduct a dialogue with the outside world, including the ability, according to the word of the apostle, to give an appropriate answer to everyone who asks about his faith (see 1 Pet. 3:15).

Once again I want to say that I really appreciate the work of everyone united around the Christmas readings. Let this wonderful movement in our Church - the movement of our teachers, intellectuals, theologians, representatives of the clergy and the people - never weaken, but, on the contrary, gain strength, so that this movement will be taken up by new generations of youth who would be able to come to God and become His faithful apostles, His faithful companions, His faithful children. May the Lord protect you all. I appreciate your efforts and invoke God’s blessing on them. Amen.
