Learning to convert solar time to local time

How to calculate true solar time for your area?

Posted by Tatyana Prokhorova on Saturday, November 3, 2012 · 78 Comments

In the Chinese Calendar, the day is divided into 12 equal parts of 2 hours each, and each is under the influence of a specific Earthly Branch. The day begins exactly in the middle of the hour (Rat). Therefore, this particular Chinese two-hour clock is divided in half into Late Rat and Early Rat:

To calculate the ba zi card, as well as for most actions related to feng shui and qi men dong jia, we need to convert civil time to true. The difference between civil and real time is mainly due to time zones that unite entire regions. Wherever the time zone is the same, noon occurs at the same time. Whereas noon in true (solar) time occurs at different times in different points of one region: to the east - earlier, to the west - later.

Thus, to calculate solar time, you will need the geographic coordinates of your locality, or rather, longitude. This information can be easily found on the Internet.

In one day, the Earth rotates 360° around its axis, which means that in 1 hour it travels 15° (360/24 = 15). It is at a distance of 15° from each other that the basic meridians that determine the UTC (universally coordinated time) time zones are located. The 0° meridian corresponds to the time zone UTC ± 0, the 15° meridian - UTC+1, the 30° meridian - UTC+2, and so on. If your locality is located directly on the meridian, then civil and real time will most likely coincide (although you need to check in any case, because in Russia often too large areas are united by one time zone!).

Let's determine how many minutes it takes the Earth to travel 1°. There are 24 hours in a day, and during this time our planet rotates 360°. There are 60 minutes in an hour, which means there are 24 x 60 = 1440 minutes in a day. Divide 1440 minutes by 360°, we get 4 minutes. It takes 4 minutes for the Earth to rotate 1°.

To calculate solar time, take the time zone in force in your city. For example, UTC+4 is currently in effect in Moscow. The meridian corresponding to UTC+4 is located at 60° east longitude. However, Moscow is located at 37°37′ east longitude.

Now we need to convert 37′ to degrees. It's simple: 1 degree is divided into 60 fractions, which are called "minutes." And each minute in turn contains 60 “seconds”. In order to convert the angle value indicated in the format (degrees minutes) into decimal fractions of a degree, you should add the number of minutes divided by 60 to the number of whole degrees (we will round the seconds, we do not need such precision).

So, divide 37′ by 60, we get 0.6167. Let's round up to 0.62. Moscow is located at 37.62° east longitude.

Let's find the difference between the longitude of the base meridian 60° and the longitude of Moscow:

37, 62° – 60° = -22,38° .

Moscow is located 22.38° west of the base meridian 60°. Let us multiply this difference by 4 minutes, during which the Earth moves 1°:

-22.38°x4 = -89.52 minutes.

Which is equal to 1 hour 29.56 minutes. That is 1 hour. 30 minutes, rounded up. This is the difference between civil (local) and true (solar) time in Moscow.

What time does the hour 巳 (Snake) begin in Moscow, for example? According to solar time, the hour 巳 is from 9:00 to 11:00. Moscow is located west of the base meridian, which means that the hour 巳 will begin there later than on the meridian itself. Later at 1 hour 30 minutes. (the difference between civil and solar time for Moscow, which we calculated above). That is, the hour 巳 in Moscow currently starts at approximately 10:30 and ends at 12:30 Moscow time. The next hour 午 (Horse) starts at 12:30 and ends at 14:30 Moscow time. And so on with all Chinese two-hour watches.

When the UTC+3 time zone was in effect in Moscow, we calculated the difference between the longitude of the base meridian 45° and the longitude of Moscow. This difference was equal to

37, 62° – 45° = -7, 38°.

Let's convert to minutes:

-7.34°x4 = -29.52 minutes.

That is, in Moscow, the Chinese two-hour periods started about 30 minutes later.

If the difference were with a + sign, it would mean that Moscow is located east of the meridian relative to which we determine the time zone. And the Chinese two-hour clock would start 30 minutes earlier, that is, the hour 巳 would start at 8:30 and end at 10:30 local time with a difference of +30 minutes.

Due to the irregular, elongated shape of the earth's orbit, the length of the day may differ at different times of the year. There are also calculation methods for this, but we will not consider them here. I simply advise that in the practice of Feng Shui and Qi Men, retreat from the boundaries of the Chinese two-hour clock for about 15 minutes in order to definitely get into the right one.

Sunny time

Solar time is the time that is tied to the rotation of the planet Earth around its axis in relation to the star Sun. The time that our watches show depends on the regulations of the governments of different countries on the establishment of maternity time, time zones, and the transition to summer and winter time. The movement of cosmic energies does not depend on all this; it obeys its own laws. The sciences of Chinese metaphysics study these laws and find methods for the practical application of this knowledge in people's lives.

And so, solar noon occurs at the moment when the shadow from the vertical column is shortest; ideally, our clocks should show 12:00 noon, but in reality they show a different time, usually about an hour more. The difference in minutes between the time on your watch and 12:00 is the correction for solar time. For example, for Almaty it is +52 minutes, that is, solar noon occurs at 12:52; for Astana it is +74 minutes or noon according to the sundial occurs at 13:14.

It’s not difficult to calculate the solar time correction for your city; you just need to know the geographic longitude of the place and your time zone, that is, the Greenwich time shift. Here are some simple mathematical calculations:

We convert geographic longitude into arc minutes (AM), remembering that an offset of 12 hours (or 12 * 60 = 720 minutes) corresponds to the 180th meridian (180 * 60 = 10800 arc minutes). Now you can make a proportion from a school algebra course:

X / GD = 720/10800 therefore X = (GD * 720) / 10800 or X = GD /15

So we found X, which indicates how many minutes in Greenwich solar noon is shifted in our country relative to solar noon on the prime meridian (London), this shift in minutes can be converted back into the usual form “HH: MM”. All that remains is to remember the official Greenwich time shift in your time zone and calculate the difference, this will be the correction for solar time.

For those who do not understand or do not want to count, I offer a table for calculations (it opens in MS Excel or in the free Open Office application). In the table, calculations are carried out with an accuracy of seconds, and explanations for the formulas are provided.

Solar time table

You can right-click on the link and select “Save target as...”. In the table you need to insert the Greenwich offset and longitude in degrees, minutes and, if you want, in seconds.

What are these calculations for? The activation tables indicate the time according to the sundial, so for proper use you need to add a correction to the time on your watch.

For example, if the activation time is indicated as 13:00 – 15:00, and I live in Almaty, then for me this period will be 13:52 – 15:52. But there is one more circumstance: it is advisable to depart from the beginning and from the end of the activation time by 15 minutes, therefore, I need to carry out activations in the interval 14:07 - 15:37 (we add 15 minutes to the start time, and subtract 15 minutes from the end time ).

As for time, that's all for now.

Why do you need to convert solar time to local time? Because to select dates and times we work with the Chinese calendar of cosmic energies. It does not depend on government decrees, but on real solar time - when planet Earth is at a certain angle to the Sun. But how to take this into account?

Our Earth is divided into 24 meridians of 15 degrees, each meridian is a time zone, and the time there is average.

But if you live on the western border of the meridian, then the sun will set later for you than for those who live in the east. To find out the real solar time in your locality, we will take the following steps.

An example of converting solar time to local time

First, find the geographic longitude of your locality. This can be done using the Internet. For example, using the geonames.org service, in the table we take the last column called Longitude

Let's say you live in Moscow, where the geographic longitude is 37 degrees.

In Moscow the current time zone is GMT+3 (after October 26, 2014). Multiply 15 degrees by 3 and get 45 degrees. This is the base meridian.

Moscow is located to the west, at a longitude of 37 degrees. The difference between the base meridian and the longitude of Moscow is 45 – 37 = 8 degrees.

As you know, the Earth revolves around the Sun in 24 hours, or 1440 minutes. One degree of rotation is 1440 minutes/360 (full rotation) = 4 minutes/degree.

We take the value of 8 degrees and multiply by 4. It turns out 32 minutes. This will be the difference between Moscow time and real solar time.

Previously, when the time in Moscow was GMT+4 (and now +3). The calculation was as follows: Multiply 15 degrees by 4 and get 60 degrees. This is the base meridian.

Moscow is located to the west, at a longitude of 37 degrees. The difference between the base meridian and the longitude of Moscow is 60 – 37 = 23 degrees.

As you know, the Earth revolves around the Sun in 24 hours, or 1440 minutes. One degree of rotation is 1440 minutes/360 (full rotation) = 4 minutes/degree.

We take the value of 23 degrees and multiply by 4. It turns out 92 minutes. This was the difference between Moscow time and real solar time.

How can I use this to select dates?

It's done this way. Let's say you need the hour of the Goat, which lasts from 13 to 15 hours. If you live in Moscow, then for you it will not come at this time, but 32 minutes later, that is, at 13:32. And will end at 15:32.

And for another city it will already come and end at a different time - sooner or later. This will depend on its geographical longitude.

In our example, solar time and local time differ by 1.5 hours!

You can see the correspondence between the clock and the 12 animals in this table.

Considering the time correction for choosing dates is very important. When choosing a day, you also need to choose the right hour. A good hour helps to soften an unfavorable day, but a negative hour, on the contrary, destroys even the most wonderful day. And it makes an unfavorable day even worse.

In addition, sometimes it is necessary to choose a time at the border of the day. If you incorrectly determine the hour, you can make a mistake and choose the wrong day, which has a completely different energy. If time is considered close to the border of the month or year, then you can make a mistake with the month and year.

Mistakes are unacceptable here. Therefore, when choosing a time, do not forget to adjust solar time to local time and choose the hour correctly!

How to determine the time for walks and activations of Feng Shui and Qi Men Dun Jia

Very often in articles and on various forums they write about the hour of the Dragon or the Goat. I also use these concepts, and they often raise a lot of questions among beginners about what kind of clock this is, how to recalculate, and so on.

The time in a day, from the point of view of the Chinese calendar, is divided into equal two-hour periods.

And each two-hour film has its own characteristics and features. The beginning and end of each of them depends on true solar time, which is determined by the position of the Sun.

There are three theories about how to use these two-hour periods to activate and move through Qi Men Dun Jia. Experts use:

  • "Rubber" time.
  • True solar time.
  • The time on the clock is “as is”.

"Rubber" time

“Rubber” time takes into account the latitude at which the settlement is located.

The idea is that the further away you are from the equator, the more unevenly the time is distributed across the hours of the day.

In winter, night hours are longer and daytime hours are shorter. In summer it's the other way around. I don't use it.

True solar time

Many Feng Shui practitioners and Qi Men Dun Jia masters use this particular time.

True solar time is the time at which the sun at noon is exactly at its zenith in your area. That is, in this technique we take into account only the longitude of a specific area and save time from all the nuances of human intervention. I'm taking advantage of this time.

You can calculate it manually using this algorithm:

  1. Determining longitude: The longitude data for your city can be found on www.wikipedia.org.
  2. We determine the difference between your time zone and Greenwich Time - also look for information on the website www.wikipedia.org.
  3. We convert longitude into minutes (1 degree in longitude is equal to 4 minutes).
  4. From the difference with Greenwich, we subtract the real difference in solar time. And this is the difference between local time and solar time.

To make it clearer, let's look at an example.

1. Moscow, longitude 37°37′

2. Convert to absolute degrees: 37+37/60 = 37.61°

3. Difference from Greenwich time (winter time) = 3 hours = 180 minutes. Multiply 37.61° longitude by 4 minutes. = 150.44 min. This means that solar time in Moscow differs from Greenwich time by 150.44 minutes. From the difference between local time and Greenwich time, i.e. 180 min., subtract the real difference in solar time, i.e. 150.44 min. 180 - 150.44 = 29.56 min ≈ 30 min. This is the difference between local time and Solar time! That is, if according to the Chinese calendar the hour 巳 (Snake) begins at 9:00, then in Moscow the hour 巳 (Snake) begins at 9:30.

Time on the clock

The time on the clock is our local time, adjusted by man for some convenience. For example, established boundaries of time zones so that populated areas fall at the same time as the designated administrative center.

You can use this time for walks and activations; according to many reviews, this gives good results. I also take advantage of this time.

Here is a table of Chinese two-hour clocks:

How to make your own Ba Tzu chart using the Chinese calendar.

The Ba Tzu or Four Pillars of Destiny technique is based on the study of the energies that influence a child at the moment of birth, shaping his destiny.
And also the interaction of these energies with the energies of every day. To compile a Ba Tzu map, you can use an online calculator, or use the Chinese solar calendar. Steps to compiling a Ba Zi chart
using the Chinese calendar: 1. Complete the Year Pillar by opening the year of birth page in the calendar and writing out the hieroglyphs indicated next to the year. 2. Fill out the Pillar of the month: by writing out the hieroglyphs of the heavenly trunk and the earthly branch of the month from the calendar. Please note that the beginning of the month is highlighted in the calendar (for example, in black) and usually falls on the 3-7th day of the month.

Earthly branch of the monthHieroglyphPeriod of the month (approximate)Daily interval (for hour of birth)
Tigerfrom February 4 to March 403:00-05:00
Rabbitfrom March 5 to April 405:00-07:00
The Dragonfrom April 5 to May 407:00-09:00
Snakefrom May 5 to June 409:00-11:00
Horsefrom June 5 to July 611:00-13:00
Sheep/Goatfrom July 7 to August 613:00-15:00
Monkeyfrom August 7 to September 615:00-17:00
Roosterfrom September 7 to October 717:00-19:00
Dogfrom October 8 to November 619:00-21:00
Pig/Boarfrom November 7 to December 621:00-23:00
Ratfrom December 7 to January 423:00-00:00 - early Rat 00:00 - 01:00 - late Rat
Bullfrom January 5 to February 301:00-03:00

3. Fill out the Pillar of the Day by writing out the hieroglyphs located next to the date of birth. 4. Complete the Hour Pillar. To do this, you will need to calculate the solar time of birth, taking into account adjustments for summer/winter time, time zone, place of birth, and other adjustments in effect at the time of birth. Having calculated the solar time of birth, determine the corresponding Earthly branch. The celestial trunk of the hour of birth is determined by the celestial trunk of the day pillar
. Determine the celestial trunk of the first Chinese hour using the table, and then calculate the celestial trunk of the hour based on the sequence of changes in the celestial trunks (according to the Wu Xing system).

Building the pillars of luck.

The Pillars of Luck are ten-year periods that show how a person's luck changes over time.
To build, you will need the gender of the person and the energy of the year - Yang or Yan. For men born in the year of Yang and for women born in the year of Yin, the movement of the pillar of luck will be forward. For men born in the year of Yin and for women born in the year of Yang, the movement of the pillar of luck will be backward according to the JiaZi table (tables of 60 combinations of heavenly trunks and earthly branches). Or use the Sequence of changes in heavenly trunks and earthly branches. The pillar of luck can be determined by taking the pillar of the month and finding in the Sequences of changes in the heavenly trunks and earthly branches the signs immediately following these signs (which appear in the pillar of the month) in the direction according to the above rule for men and women. This will be the first Pillar of Fortune, the next Pillars of Fortune are determined in the same sequence for each decade. Determining the age of the first Pillar of Luck
. To do this, let's turn again to the Chinese calendar page. According to the above rule of moving forward or backward, count (forward or backward) from your birthday the number of days until the nearest beginning of the month (in the calendar, this day is usually enclosed in a frame). Then divide this number of days by 3. The resulting number will be the age of the person at which he will enter his first Pillar of Fortune. The next Pillar of Luck will begin 10 years after the first.

Calculation of true solar time for your area

In the Chinese calendar, the day is divided into 12 parts of two hours, each of which is influenced by a certain Earthly branch - this is solar time. Local time is usually different from solar time. To calculate local solar time, you will need the geographic longitude of a location and its current time zone. For example, for Moscow the Hour of the Ox will begin 30 minutes later - at 01:30. For Sevastopol - 46 minutes later, for Novosibirsk - 29 minutes later, for Vladivostok - 1 hour 12 minutes later.

How desk placement in the office affects your career

.
Poor location of the desk in the office: directly opposite the door, especially if there is a corridor leading to the door - this position provokes conflicts and generates fatigue. A table with its back to a window or open space will lead to difficulties in implementing plans. A table under the influence of Sha is inside the room - opposite the outer corner, under the beam, or Sha is outside, from the outside. A table near the door, especially if the person sitting is with their side or back to the door. How to arrange desks to improve employee interaction
.
To ensure that the manager has the support of the team: The direction of the employees' desks must correspond to the element that generates the element corresponding to the direction of the boss's desk. For example, if the direction of the boss's desk is East (or Southeast) - this is Tree, then the direction of the employees' desks is North - Water. To unite the team and the manager
: In this case, it is better to arrange the tables in the same direction if their offices are located on the same floor.
To enlist the support of the boss
, you need to place the table in the direction corresponding to the element (according to the U-Xing system), which will support the element corresponding to the direction of the boss’s table.
To conclude an agreement with a client
, you need to seat him at the table in a direction that supports the direction of your table. When arranging tables, also use the Flying Stars technique. The shape of the desktop is especially important for those who are negotiating. Square and rectangular shapes are most favorable. If the table has a round shape, then it is better to place the client on the concave side of the table (where the table hugs him).

How time is measured in the Chinese Feng Shui system

@Stephen Skinner, Australian lecturer, writer

Let's take a look at how time is measured according to Feng Shui. Luck is changeable, and in Feng Shui, to achieve results you need to measure time:

What works for you today may not work out so well in twenty years. To understand how time is measured in Feng Shui, you need to understand how the Chinese measure time. The measurement of time has always been associated with the movement of celestial bodies. Unfortunately, these bodies do not always move along a trajectory that is easy to calculate using arithmetic. In all calendar systems, the day is associated with the rising and setting of the Sun. The day is the most obvious unit of time. In the West, the day is divided into twenty-four hours, and in China - into 12 hours, and each hour consists of 120 minutes. The Chinese use these "dual clocks" even today. Most calendars, although not all, also use the time it takes the Earth to circle the Sun as a measure of a second unit of time, the year. Finally, in many cultures the year is divided into twelve or thirteen months, or “moons.”

Measuring time according to Feng Shui. In North America, Europe and many other countries there is only one calendar. It is a solar calendar, and its very name means that it is closely related to the rotation of the Earth around the Sun. In fact, this calendar was invented by Julius Caesar (in 46 BC) and was modified by Pope Gregory (in 1582). One of the problems with the solar calendar is that the Earth's rotation around the Sun does not occur in the same number of days. In other words, the exact number of days in a year is not determined. It is approximately 365.242199 days.

Other calendars used the Moon as a chronometer. These calendars are called lunar calendars, from the Latin word luna, meaning “moon.” The lunar calendar is used in Islamic countries. There are three problems with this calendar:

1. The exact number of days in one lunar cycle is not determined (approximately 29.53059 days).

2. There is no exact number of lunar cycles in a year (approximately 12.36826).

3. There are at least three ways to measure the length of the lunar cycle: including from one new moon to another or from one full moon to another, resulting in several different measurements.

Usually these problems are dealt with by introducing an additional lunar month from time to time, and this is far from the best solution. Although our Western calendar is a solar calendar, the Moon is still used to determine the dates of religious holidays: for example, Easter falls on different dates each year, determined by the quarters of the Moon. Since the Western calendar is a solar calendar, it should reflect the start and end dates of the seasons, but it is unlikely that if you ask the first city dweller you come across when the seasons of the year begin and end, you will immediately get an answer.

Time correction

The time we use in everyday life is called administrative time. It contains additions that distinguish it from true solar time. These additions include:

1. Standard time (Time zones in the USSR were introduced in 1924)

2. Maternity time (June 16, 1930, by Decree of the Council of People's Commissars, the clock hands in the USSR were moved forward one hour)

3. Summer time (summer time began to be introduced in the USSR in 1981).

In many reference books, standard time and maternity time are combined into a parameter called “Difference from GMT”. GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) is the exact time on the Greenwich meridian. The Greenwich meridian is the prime meridian that passes through the observatory in the London suburb of Greenwich. The analogue of GMT is “World Time” (UTC).

The sequence of converting administrative time to solar time consists of three steps:

1. It is necessary to determine what time it was on the Greenwich meridian at the time of the event. To do this, we subtract the difference with Greenwich and summer time, if any, from administrative time. For example, a person was born in Moscow on November 4, 1980 at 17:06. In reference books you can find that the difference with GMT was 3 hours. There was no daylight saving time that day. From 17:06 we take 3 hours. It turns out 14:06.

2. The next step is to determine how long it takes the Sun to travel from the event site to Greenwich (from the point of view of an observer on Earth). To do this, you need to use the table “Converting longitude to time”. First we convert degrees of longitude, and then minutes of longitude (see table below).

In our example, Moscow is located at a longitude of 37 degrees and 35 minutes.

37 degrees longitude equals 2 hours 28 minutes. 35 minutes of longitude corresponds to 2 minutes 20 seconds.

This means that it takes the Sun 2 hours 30 minutes and 20 seconds to travel from Moscow to Greenwich.

3. The third step of the calculation is to add the result obtained to Greenwich time.

In our example, we add 14:06 with 02:30:20. That works out to 16 hours 36 minutes and 20 seconds. Seconds are usually rounded off.

4. The final step is to use the Equation of Time. Due to the uneven rotation of the Earth, the length of the solar day varies throughout the year. To determine the required correction, you need to find the desired date on the Equation of Time chart and look at the number of minutes on the vertical axis.

In our example, on November 4, the deviation of true solar time from mean solar time was 16 minutes. 30 sec. (this is the maximum deviation throughout the year).

We add this deviation to the previously obtained result.

16 hours 36 minutes and 20 seconds add up to 16 minutes and 30 seconds. Rounded to 16 hours 53 minutes.

Thus, from 17:06 administrative time we moved to 16:53 true solar time.
