Historical events

The Temple of Hermogenes in Golyanovo is a tribute to the memory of the Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus', who served Orthodoxy and the Fatherland in difficult times in the mid-16th - early 17th centuries.

The conquest of Kazan, Astrakhan and Siberia by the Russians, the ascension to the Russian throne of Tsar John IV (Ivan the Terrible), the seizure of part of Russian territories by Poland are the main events of this period in the history of the formation of the Russian State.

Brief description of the life of the holy martyr Hermogenes (Hermogenes)

Presumably in the first half of the 16th century, a boy, Ermolai, was born into the family of a Don Cossack. It was he who was destined to become Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus' Ermogen (Hermogen) in the tragic years for the Russian people. Having begun serving God as a parish priest in the small Kazan church of St. Nicholas, after some time Ermolai took monastic vows and became the monk Hermogenes (Hermogenes). He happened to see the miracle of the appearance of the icon of the Mother of God in Kazan.

Very wise, well-read and living a righteous life, Ermogen continued his service to God as an archimandrite of the monastery in Kazan. Having become a bishop, he was elevated to the rank of metropolitan, and carried out great work to involve the Tatars in the Orthodox faith.

At the very beginning of the 17th century. Russian hierarchs proclaimed Hermogenes Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus'. His Patriarchate came during a difficult “troubled” time. He laid down his life to confront the enemies of the Fatherland, to prevent the introduction of infidels into Rus'. After the capture of Moscow by the Poles, His Holiness openly opposed foreigners and called on the Russians to join the militia of Minin and Pozharsky.

It was he who blessed the transfer of the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos from Kazan to Moscow, which became the shrine of the people who rebelled against the invaders. After the burning of Moscow, the Poles imprisoned Hermogenes in the Chudov Monastery, where he remained for 9 months. The saint died in the monastery in agony without food or water on February 17, 1612.

Discovery of the relics of Patriarch Hermogenes

The body of the holy martyr was interred on the territory of the Chudov Monastery. After 4 decades, a miracle appeared to the clergy who opened the burial: Hermogen looked alive. His incorruptible relics are currently in the Assumption Cathedral of the Kremlin.

Canonization of Hermogenes

His Holiness Hermogenes fought all his life for the purity of the Christian faith and the unity of the Russian people. At the beginning of the 20th century. The Russian Orthodox Church, recognizing the merits of the Patriarch, included him in the list of saints. In 2013, Orthodox Christians celebrated the 100th anniversary of the canonization of Hermogenes.

The Saint's Memorial Day is celebrated twice: May 12 (May 25, old style) and February 17 (March 1). At his icon, believers pray for strengthening of faith, healing from serious illnesses and spiritual ailments, and ask for help in difficult life situations.

Temple in honor of the Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus' Hermogenes

In 2012, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the canonization of the holy martyr Hermogenes and the 400th anniversary of his death, a decision was made to erect a temple complex in his honor in one of the Moscow microdistricts. The creation of a community for the future church began in Golyanovo, and Alexei Dovgopoly was appointed its rector. Over the course of 2 years, with the help of parishioners, a temporary wooden church was built, consecrated by Bishop Panteleimon of Orekhovo-Zuevsky.

Regular services began to be held there, and a Sunday school was opened. In the fall of 2014, preparations began for the construction site for the construction of a stone temple. In the summer of 2015, a prayer service was held there with the ceremony of laying the foundation stone for the temple under construction.

Patronal holidays

In addition to generally accepted holidays, there are patronal holidays, which are especially important for each temple. For this parish, these are May 25 and March 4, when the church glorifies the Great Martyr Hermogenes. On the eve of this day, an All-Night Vigil is celebrated.

As a rule, the festive liturgy is conducted by a person of the highest rank. He is served by the rector and the ministers of the church. After this, a procession of the Cross takes place, ending with a prayer in honor of Saint Hermogenes. After the end of the service, all parishioners are congratulated on the bright holiday.

Architecture, appearance of the future temple

The Church of Hermogenes in Golyanovo is being built according to an individual design by the parish architect with donations from parishioners and benefactors. It is designed for 500 people. It is planned that religious Muscovites living in the Nagorny district, Northern Chertanovo and Zyuzino will come here.

The temple complex will include a cruciform church in the Byzantine style 23 m high with 5 domes, as well as a large 3-story clergy house and a baptismal house made in the same style. The complex will occupy an area of more than 6,000 m2, it will be fenced and landscaped.

This is what the finished Temple of Hermogenes in Golyanovo should look like.

At present, the construction and cladding of the brick walls of the temple and external porches have been completed, all the necessary utilities have been connected to it, and the supply of electricity has been ensured. Builders are carrying out interior finishing work. In August 2021, the consecration and installation of the central dome and cross took place. A solemn prayer service in honor of this long-awaited event was performed by Archpriest Alexander Dasaev. The opening of the temple should take place in 2021.

Interior

The walls and ceiling of the temple are not yet painted with frescoes. They are covered with white paint. Icons of revered saints are placed on the walls.

Interior decoration

The altar is separated from the rest of the church by a three-level iconostasis, made in the Baroque style. It is decorated with elaborate carvings, twisted columns and excellent gilding. It is noteworthy that in the first row to the right of the Savior is the face of the holy martyr Hermogenes. The iconostasis is crowned with an image of the Lord, called “Christ in Power,” as well as an Orthodox cross.

Interior decoration

A team of artists is working on the interior decoration of the temple. A design for the iconostasis has been developed and approved, which will be made of hand-cut white stone and painted in the same Byzantine style in which the entire temple complex is being built. Work is already underway on the production of elements of the iconostasis.

The first (main) chapel is dedicated to the holy martyr Hermogenes, the second - to Nicholas the Wonderworker. For the first time in the history of temple construction, the floors will be laid with cast iron tiles. It is noteworthy that they use rarely used technology. Now artists are working on creating a special ornament for cast iron slabs.

Shrines

The main shrine of the temple will be the icon of the holy martyr Hermogenes, who gave his strength to the struggle for the purity of the Christian religion and the unity of Rus' at the end of the 15th - beginning of the 16th centuries. This image is a copy of the icon consecrated by Patriarch Kirill in 2011 at the relics of St. Hermogenes in the Assumption Cathedral of the Moscow Kremlin.

Perhaps some of the saint’s relics will be transferred to the new temple. The temple library will undoubtedly become a tribute to the memory of Hermogenes (Hermogenes), a highly educated preacher and teacher.

Information for pilgrims

The temple servants conduct active pilgrimage activities. For example, on January 2, 2021, a group of young people, together with Priest John Novikov, visited the shrines of the Vladimir land. They visited the Assumption Cathedral, examining this monument of Russian architecture, which became a model for the creation of many other cathedrals.

Consecration of the temple by Patriarch Kirill

Parishioners touched such shrines as icons: Vladimir and Maksimov, as well as holy relics. Such events take place regularly. The tour schedule can be found on the temple website.
