An excerpt characterizing the Ekaterinodar Theological Seminary

Natasha, without saying anything, walked up to her father and looked at him with questioning, surprised eyes. After several receptions of recitation, M lle Georges left and Countess Bezukhaya asked for company in the hall. The Count wanted to leave, but Helen begged him not to ruin her impromptu ball. The Rostovs remained. Anatole invited Natasha to a waltz and during the waltz he, shaking her waist and hand, told her that she was ravissante [charming] and that he loved her. During the eco-session, which she again danced with Kuragin, when they were left alone, Anatole did not say anything to her and only looked at her. Natasha was in doubt whether she had seen what he said to her during the waltz in a dream. At the end of the first figure he shook her hand again. Natasha raised her frightened eyes to him, but there was such a self-confidently tender expression in his affectionate gaze and smile that she could not look at him and say what she had to say to him. She lowered her eyes. “Don’t tell me such things, I’m engaged and love someone else,” she said quickly... “She looked at him. Anatole was not embarrassed or upset by what she said. - Don't tell me about this. What do I care? - he said. “I’m saying that I’m madly, madly in love with you.” Is it my fault that you are amazing? Let's start. Natasha, animated and anxious, looked around her with wide, frightened eyes and seemed more cheerful than usual. She remembered almost nothing of what happened that evening. They danced the Ecossaise and Gros Vater, her father invited her to leave, she asked to stay. Wherever she was, no matter who she spoke to, she felt his gaze on her. Then she remembered that she asked her father for permission to go to the dressing room to straighten her dress, that Helen followed her, told her laughing about her brother’s love, and that in the small sofa room she again met Anatole, that Helen disappeared somewhere, they were left alone and Anatole, Taking her hand, he said in a gentle voice:

Bible conference on February 5-6 at the Ekaterinodar Theological Seminary

On February 5-6 in Krasnodar, on the basis of the Ekaterinodar Theological Seminary, with the support of the Educational Committee of the Russian Orthodox Church, the Department of Biblical Studies of the Moscow Theological Academy and the Ekaterinodar Theological Seminary jointly held the annual scientific and theological conference “Exegesis and Hermeneutics of the Holy Scriptures”.
The conference was attended by teachers and students of the Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kyiv Theological Academies, All-Church Postgraduate and Doctoral Studies, Ekaterinodar, Saratov and Stavropol Theological Seminaries, as well as Kuban State University. The rector of the Ekaterinodar Theological Seminary, Archpriest Igor Olzhabaev, and the specialist in the theological education sector of the Educational Committee of the Russian Orthodox Church, secretary of the Department of Biblical Studies of the Moscow Theological Academy, Sergei Vyacheslavovich Zubov, addressed the participants and listeners of the conference with welcoming words.

As part of the program, on February 5, representatives of the teaching staff of the Department of Biblical Studies of the Moscow Theological Academy gave four lectures to the assembled conference participants. The first part touched on the themes of the Holy Scriptures of the New Testament:

hierome Philofey (Artyushin), Associate Professor of the Department of Biblical Studies at the Moscow Academy of Sciences, spoke on the topic: ““Under the sign of mercy” (Matthew 9, 9-13): the problem of the relationship between righteousness and sin in the theological context of the Gospel of Matthew.” One of the popular methodologies in modern Western biblical studies—narrative analysis—was presented in the form of a lecture. Based on a detailed exegetical analysis of the composition of one of the Gospel texts (Matthew 9:9-13), important conclusions were drawn that affect the theology of the entire Gospel, one of the semantic vectors of which is the problem of the relationship between righteousness and sin. Evangelist Matthew gives an original answer to this question, based on the experience of accepting sinners into fellowship within his early Christian community. The rationale for this communal church practice is found not only in the words but also in the demonstrable deeds of Christ. A striking manifestation of the Teacher’s mercy is the joint meal with tax collectors and sinners in the house of Matthew, as the patristic exegetical tradition unanimously testifies to. Thus, the practical ideal of righteousness for a believer becomes precisely the ability to do mercy and show mercy towards one’s neighbor, following the example of Christ “meek and lowly in heart” (Matthew 11:29).

hierome Nikolai (Sakharov), professor of the Department of Biblical Studies at the Moscow Academy of Sciences, spoke on the topic: “Christ as the Completer of the Act of Creation in the Gospel of John: from “ἤρξατο ὁ Θεὸς ποιῆσαι” (Gen. 2, 3) to “Τετέλεσται” (John 19, 30) ." Speech by Fr. Nicholas was the fruit of his small research, the purpose of which was to prove that the theme of creation is not only present in the Gospel of John, but is also central. Moreover, the speech showed that the Act of Creation described in the book of Genesis (chap. 1–2) not only finds a parallel, but also its continuation in the ministry of Christ the Creator of human souls. It is precisely the final stage of human creation—the inspiration of the Spirit into humanity—that the entire “work of Christ” is dedicated to: the Spirit, who “was called to unite all things” (kontakion of Pentecost), thereby completing the formation of man-humanity into a multi-hyphenate unity “in the image and likeness of God.” "(Genesis 1:26). The second part of the event was devoted to the themes of the Old Testament:

Mikhail Anatolyevich Skobelev, associate professor of the Department of Biblical Studies at the Moscow Academy of Sciences, spoke on the topic: “The circle of ideas of “Wisdom Literature”.” The lecture was devoted to the literary form and main themes of the Teaching Books of the Old Testament. The main object of the “Literature of Wisdom” is a person: alone with himself, in the family, in society, in prosperity and misfortune, in poverty and wealth. The deepest knowledge of the human heart and comprehensive coverage of various aspects of human existence, characteristic of Educational books, make them always in demand for all those seeking the meaning of life and wise advice.

Hier. Andrey Vydrin, associate professor of the Department of Biblical Studies at the Moscow Academy of Sciences, spoke on the topic: “History of the Ancient East and the Bible.” The report examined individual periods from the earliest and ancient history of mankind with a view to their possible correlation with specific episodes of the biblical narrative. Firstly, based on archaeological research, the problem of human origins was discussed, as well as evidence of the manifestation of religious ideas among people who lived in the Paleolithic era. Secondly, an attempt was made to draw a connection between the process of settlement of the Sumerians in southern Mesopotamia in the fifth millennium BC and the story of the post-Flood scattering of peoples “over the face of the earth” (Gen. 11: 1-9). Finally, the history of ancient Mesopotamia from the late 3rd to early 2nd millennia was considered as a historical background for the story of the ancestors of the patriarch Abraham and his migration to Canaan.

At the end of the speeches, the secretary of the Biblical Studies Department of the Moscow Theological Academy, Sergei Vyacheslavovich Zubov, spoke about the tradition of holding a “Biblical Samovar” within the framework of the biblical conference within the walls of the MDA - an informal event when all conference participants can chat with each other over tea and discuss topics of interest in the study of the Sacred Writings in an informal setting. With the wish to pass on this good tradition, a samovar was presented to the Biblical Theological Department of the Ekaterinodar Theological Seminary from the Department of Biblical Studies of the Moscow Theological Academy.

On the evening of February 5, a round table was held within the walls of the Ekaterinodar Theological Seminary, where over tea all interested conference participants were able to discuss with the lecturers issues of interest in the study of the Holy Scriptures in an informal setting.

On the second day, February 6, at the Ekaterinodar Theological Seminary, within the framework of two sections of the conference “Exegesis and Hermeneutics of the Holy Scriptures,” reports were made by teachers and students. The first section featured:

  1. Belsky Vladimir Viktorovich, methodologist of the Department of Philology of the Moscow Academy of Sciences. "Modern methods of studying the prophetic books of the Old Testament"
  2. Priest Evgeny Zykov, postgraduate school OZO MDA. “The idea of pre-understanding in the philosophical hermeneutics of H. G. Gadamer”
  3. Bregeda Alexander Vyacheslavovich, 3rd year of MDA graduate school. “Development of the concept of “Day of the Lord” in the books of the minor prophets”

  9. Ezhov Daniil Aleksandrovich, 3rd year bachelor's degree at Ekaterinodar DS. “Ideas about the resurrection of the dead in the Jewish tradition of the 3rd-1st centuries BC.”

During the second section, the following speakers were: Priest Mikhail Eremin, teacher of the Ekaterinodar DS, made a report: “The theme of the Judgment of God in the context of the moral teaching of the Apostle Paul according to his letter to the Romans (Rom. 12:9-21).” The speech examined the problem of correlating the apostolic concept of relations with enemies according to the Epistle to the Romans (12:20) and the Gospel commandment about love for enemies. The apostolic concept fits very well with the Old Testament ideas about treating enemies as people who are under the threat of the coming righteous Judgment of God, and, at first glance, goes against the teaching of the Gospel about love for enemies. Korotkov Pyotr Aleksandrovich, senior lecturer at the Department of Biblical Studies at the Moscow Academy of Sciences, made a report: “The Teaching of St. ap. Paul on Christian marriage in the works of Russian biblical scholars." The report discussed the views of Prof. MDA M.D. Muretova and prof. SPbDA N.N. Glubokovsky on the Gospel teaching on marriage and its refraction by the Apostle Paul in relation to the problems of the Christian community in Corinth. Affirming the indissolubility of concluded marriages between Corinthian Christians and pagans, St. Paul, at the same time, formulates an unconditional demand for the church to recognize such “mixed marriages,” including those concluded before the adoption of Christianity. According to the teachings of the ap. Paul, such a marriage requires from a Christian a special feat of confession associated with attracting a non-Christian to Christianity. Then, even with one Christian spouse, the fruits of a mixed marriage become holy.

The following reports were also presented in this section:

  1. Benedisyuk Dmitry Ananyevich, 1st year graduate student of the Kyiv DA. “A brief analysis of the concept of human perfection in ancient philosophy and Holy Scripture”
  2. Kovura Sergey Olegovich, 1st year graduate student at MDA. "Apocalyptic eschatology of St. Paul the Apostle: a modern view of Western Biblical scholarship"

At the end of the conference, teachers were awarded certificates of advanced training, and all conference participants who made presentations were awarded certificates of participation in the conference.

It is worth noting the first of its kind and very positive experience when, as part of a scientific and educational event held on the basis of one of the seminaries, teachers of the theological academy gave lectures and held a joint conference.

The purpose of the event was to develop interest among students of religious and secular educational institutions in the study of the Holy Scriptures, as well as to contribute to the development of the scientific professional community of teachers of biblical disciplines.

The teaching staff and students of the Department of Biblical Studies of the Moscow Theological Academy express their gratitude to the rector of the Ekaterinodar Theological Seminary, Rev. Igor Olzhabaev, teacher priest. Mikhail Eremin and all the teachers and students of the Ekaterinodar Theological Seminary who provided a warm welcome and created a sincere, warm atmosphere for the joint event!
