Vladimir Seminary on the verge of closure?
The educational institution was given three months to correct the shortcomings.
The Vladimir Theological Seminary, located in the city center on the territory of the Mother of God Nativity Monastery, is on the verge of closure, several sources told ProVladimir. The interlocutors reported that before Easter, April 5-6, the educational committee of the Russian Orthodox Church inspected the seminary: it tested the knowledge of fourth-year students and identified shortcomings in the organization of the educational process and the structure of the leadership of the seminary.
The results of the audit have already led to significant changes in the operation of the establishment, but, according to sources, the likelihood that all the comments will be eliminated is small. If the seminary does not meet the standards, it may be deprived of its status as an educational institution of the Russian Orthodox Church. The seminary was given three months to correct the comments, after which another commission would visit it.
The diocese's secretary for external church relations, Archpriest Evgeniy Lipatov, who now actually heads the educational institution, was assigned to correct the violations. At the same time, Archpriest Georgy Gorbachuk continues to remain officially the rector of the seminary.
New positions have already been introduced in the leadership of the seminary. According to standards, the leadership structure should correspond to the university system, but the seminary lacked deputy rectors and methodologists. There are not enough candidates of science among the teachers of the educational institution.
The person in charge of records management recently left the seminary. ProVladimir’s interlocutors do not know the reasons for the dismissal, but, according to them, the absence of a person who knew the structure of the institution from the inside could significantly complicate the process of correcting violations.
The fourth-year students who passed the test did not show high knowledge, and some students, after four years of study, were unable to list the seven sacraments of the church.
After the check, Metropolitan Evlogy of Vladimir and Suzdal visited the Patriarchate. ProVladimir’s sources reported that during the visit the question of the fate of the seminary was raised, and suggested that if its status is deprived, Evlogii himself may retire.
In mid-April, seminary students were required to wear black tunics and the ability to leave the educational institution was significantly limited. Full-time students, including residents of Vladimir, have been living under the barracks system since the opening of the department in 2004, but they were allowed to go out into the city until 22:00, while, for example, visiting cinemas and entertainment venues was not “blessed”. Now students are prohibited from being outside the seminary after 19:00.
ProVladimir contacted Archpriest Evgeny Lipatov. He said that the seminary underwent a routine inspection by the educational committee, now the educational process continues, and he does not see any alarm in the situation.

ProVladimir: Several people told us that the seminary is on the verge of closure, is this true?
Evgey Lipatov: I don’t know, we don’t comment on rumors.
ProVladimir: Things are going well at the seminary now, and there are no prerequisites for closure?
Evgeny Lipatov: All glory to God. Yes. Our educational process is underway, students are studying.
ProVladimir: We have information that there was an inspection from the Patriarchate, which revealed violations.
Evgeniy Lipatov: These are regular inspections that take place in all educational institutions. You can look at the website of the Russian Orthodox Church educational committee on the news line. They checked the Vladimir Seminary, then Ivanovo, Kostroma, Saratov. This is a normal program of inspections of educational activities.
ProVladimir : Will there be any changes in the work of the seminary in the near future?
Evgeniy Lipatov: We have recommendations for optimizing the educational process in the seminary from the educational committee, which we accepted and will prepare, in accordance with these recommendations, the amendments that were adopted by the Supreme Church Council regarding the educational activities of the Russian Orthodox Church. We are implementing and will continue to implement what is within us, our educational programs. We have standard provisions sent to us in accordance with the requirements of the educational committee, and curricula, and educational programs. Naturally, there are some changes in the seminary. Our university also recently underwent an inspection.
ProVladimir: And certain violations were revealed there.
Evgeniy Lipatov: Well, we are not angels, perhaps we have identified something, some questions. We accepted them and are now preparing corrections for these shortcomings. This is a normal, standard check from the training committee. We were not checked by some specialized body of the patriarchate created only for the sake of our seminary, but by the educational committee. His task includes regular checks. We accepted and showed all the documentation, regulations, I don’t see any alarm here.
The Vladimir St. Theophan's Theological Seminary is now the highest theological educational institution of the Vladimir-Suzdal diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church. It was established by decree of the Synod in November 1749 and operated until August 1918. It was closed during the Soviet years. In 1991, under the diocesan administration of Archpriest Georgy Gorbachuk, one-year pastoral courses were created, and in 1992 they were transformed into a school. On April 9, 1998, the Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church transformed the school into a seminary with a correspondence course, and in 2004 a full-time course was opened.
