Icon "Savior Almighty"

“Savior Almighty” occupies the dominant image in Orthodox icon painting, therefore it is always placed in the central dome of every Orthodox church - in the most honorable place. The icon depicts the Son of God Jesus Christ in the image of a judge and the Heavenly King, therefore the icon is also called “Pantocrator”, which is translated from Greek as “ruler of all”. The chief healer of souls and bodies, who knows about everything. It is to the Almighty that our prayers should first of all be addressed. Sometimes despondency and despair penetrate into the very heart, but the Savior always gives a helping hand, and faith and hope come to life again.

In Rus', the icon appeared around the 12th century and served as a prayer icon for Russian princes. Icons of the “Savior Almighty” often streamed myrrh and healed many diseases.

Icon “Holy Trinity” (Old Testament)

The icon of the Holy Trinity is valued as one of the most important images that must be present in every Orthodox church. The Trinity is the greatest and most mysterious icon of humanity. The picturesque image was painted according to all the canons of icon painting in a workshop at the temple. He talks about the unity of God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. The “Trinity” icon was created so that every believer could visually imagine the trisolar light of Orthodoxy. The Lord is one in three persons - this is difficult to comprehend and understand, but one must sincerely believe in this, taking it for granted. For Rus', the image of the Trinity is confessional, and before it one repents for the forgiveness of sins committed.

Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God

One of the most key shrines of the Russian Orthodox Church is the miraculous Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God. The Lord, through this image, sends help to all believers in strengthening faith, in healing mental and physical suffering, in softening evil hearts, in liberation from enemy invasions, in reconciling those at war and preserving the unity of Russia.

According to pious tradition, this image was painted by the Evangelist Luke during the life of the Mother of God. The shrine was brought to Rus' from Byzantium as a gift to Yuri Dolgoruky. The icon has been glorified more than once for its miracles. For example, while in Kyiv, she more than once left her place in church and found herself hanging in the air. She healed and even resurrected more than once. Generals and warriors turned to her for help before important battles. And she did not leave them, showing her miracles in seemingly the most hopeless situations. Once, after a won battle against Bulgaria, when a thanksgiving prayer service was served to the Mother of God, a light shone from her icon, illuminating the entire amazed regiment. Another wonderful story with this icon happened immediately after it was brought to Moscow to protect the city from the invasion of Tamerlane. It was on the day when the icon was delivered to the city that Tamerlane unexpectedly ordered his army to retreat.

What icons help

Nowadays, when many people are coming back to faith, you can buy an icon in any church store. But a person who is not too familiar with the basics of faith may have a question about why icons are needed, and which icon helps with what. In general, to say that an icon helps is not entirely true, since it is not the icon itself that helps, but those who are depicted on it - the Lord Jesus Christ, the Most Holy Theotokos, Angels and Saints. An icon is a kind of “window” into the spiritual world, invisible with ordinary eyes. And turning to the image captured on the icon, we thereby turn to the Prototype, which was once revealed to the icon painter in the form of the deepest spiritual insight, we join in with Divine grace, the conductor of which is the icon.

In Russia, it has long been customary to ask for help from the Holy Faces; requests were and are made most often to the icons of the Mother of God and the Holy Saints. They pray to icons for healing from illnesses, for the health and well-being of loved ones, for help in business, and also offer gratitude for their help. Icons of the Mother of God help those who pray for children, for their well-being and health. Next we will consider in more detail which icons of the Mother of God help with what. One of the most revered icons in Russia is the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, which has been protecting Russia for several centuries. The Kazan icon helps those who ask for family well-being, the blessing of marriage and children, and also protects from fires and various troubles and misfortunes. Another revered miraculous icon of the Vladimir Mother of God, which has accompanied the history of Rus' since ancient times, helps mothers and children; people pray to her for deliverance from infertility and healing of female diseases. They also pray to this icon to pacify unrest, for protection from enemies and natural disasters. The Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God is considered the patroness of children. It protects young children from illnesses, and older children from harmful influences from the outside, helps them protect themselves from bad companies and dangers. Our Lady of Iverskaya helps in healing illnesses and consoling in sorrows. The miraculous icon of the Inexhaustible Chalice helps people recover from alcoholism and drug addiction, and also symbolizes the inexhaustible source of grace and heavenly help that is given to those who ask. The Seven-Arrow Icon protects against the evil thoughts of others, helps protect against hostility and brings peace. The Icon of the Three Joys helps in family life; they pray to her for the return of stolen and unjustly taken away, as well as for protection from enemies and for help to those who are imprisoned. In Russia, icons of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker are very widely revered; almost every Orthodox Christian has such an icon in the home. The icon of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker helps against need and poverty, keeps wealth in the house, protects children and women, and also protects travelers, so a person planning a trip, especially by water, should take it with him. The icon of Panteleimon the Healer helps both the sick who pray in front of this image for healing, and doctors, since the Great Martyr Panteleimon patronizes people associated with medicine. Speaking about helping icons, we need to remember one more image - the icon of Seraphim of Sarov. This icon helps in healing diseases, especially diseases of the musculoskeletal system and internal organs. They also pray to the icon of Seraphim of Sarov for consolation in sorrows. The icon of Sergius of Radonezh is the patron of students; they pray to Saint Sergius for help in their studies, for overcoming problems with attention and mastering educational material, as well as for help during trials and litigation. Sergius of Radonezh helps those who stand for truth and defend justice. The Matrona of Moscow icon helps with almost all everyday problems. They pray to Matronushka for health, for the well-being of loved ones, and ask for help in finding a “soul mate.”

Kazan Icon of the Mother of God

This miraculous icon of the Mother of God appeared after a fire in Kazan in the 16th century in a rather mysterious way. The Mother of God appeared to the nine-year-old girl Matrona in a dream, telling her to find her icon in the ashes. This dream was repeated again and again, until the girl decided to go with her mother in search of the icon. And indeed, the shrine was found there.

This image of the Mother of God is the most revered and beloved; it is the “Great Intercessor of Russia.” The icon more than once helped the people in the most difficult times. With its appearance, it symbolizes victory over the Time of Troubles. It is she who is thanked for delivering Moscow from the invasion of the Poles. Before the Battle of Poltava, Peter the Great and his army prayed to the image of the Kazan Mother of God. The icon was the main patron of the Romanov dynasty. During the Great Patriotic War, this icon was the spiritual guide of the Russian people.

Starting from Baptism, all the most significant events in life take place with her. She gives a blessing to marriage, helps in work, in everyday problems.

Icon of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker (Pleasant)

Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker, or otherwise Nicholas the Pleasant, as they began to call him in baptized Rus', in Orthodoxy is perhaps the most revered saint after the Mother of God. The fate of this saint was not easy; perhaps it was thanks to life’s trials and difficulties that he chose the religious path. While still a child, he was already keen on reading the Divine Scriptures, and as he grew up, he became an archbishop. Then Nicholas began to be called the Wonderworker. Throughout his life, many miracles and deeds were attributed to him. According to one legend, he resurrected a sailor who fell from the mast; according to another, he saved three young girls whose beauty was “sold” by their own father as the only way to pay off numerous debts. And there are countless such stories. Nicholas has always been the personification of justice and nobility.

They pray in front of the icon of St. Nicholas for any seemingly insoluble problems. He helps wanderers, sailors, women in labor, and even students. The icon is capable of healing from any ailments, protecting from unfavorable events and ill-wishers, protecting from temptations and performing real miracles. Turning to Nikolai with sincerity and faith, people noticed more than once that in their lives everything happened exactly as they asked.

Icon of the Mother of God of the Seven Arrows

The “seven-arrow” icon is the most powerful protector of the house and its inhabitants. The Virgin Mary, depicted in this icon, is pierced with seven swords, symbolizing the heartache that the Saint experienced during her life. The seven swords are the main mortal human sins that bring mental suffering to the Mother of God.

The icon first appeared in the 17th century. One day, a peasant, sick with lameness and longing for recovery from this disease, was told in a dream by a Divine voice to find a miraculous image in a nearby monastery and to pray with faith in front of this image. It turned out that the wooden board with the face of the Virgin Mary served as a step in the staircase leading to the bell tower. After the image was washed and restored, a prayer service was served for her, after which the peasant was completely healed. The Icon of the Most Holy Mother of God of the Seven Arrows is of great importance in the life of every believer. In front of this strong icon they pray for protection of their home, from ill-wishers, from quarrels within the family, and to soften the heart. The icon is usually placed opposite the front door so that Semistrelnaya can see the eyes of those entering. Before placing the icon, you need to read a prayer. If one of your loved ones or acquaintances stopped visiting you, then we can conclude that his thoughts were not pure in relation to the living members of this house. Thus, the Most Holy Mother of God of Seven Arrows gives birth to mercy and kindness in the souls of believers.

Icons of the Mother of God

Our Lady is very merciful. It is not surprising that most miracles are associated with Her images.

Semistrelnaya

Find out what awaits you today - Horoscope for today for all zodiac signs

This face is one of the strongest. Unfortunately, it is associated with sad events in the life of the Virgin Mary. On the 40th day after the birth of Jesus, she took Him to the temple. There, Elder Simeon recognized the baby as the Son of the Lord (this day is celebrated as Candlemas), but also predicted to the Virgin that “a weapon will pierce her soul,” but “the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed.” That is, the prophet saw in advance the torture and execution of Jesus - for a mother it is truly a terrible pain to see all this!

It is not surprising that people who are also going through difficult days of their lives pray to this icon more often.

They ask:

  • protect them from problems and evil people;
  • protect their home;
  • reconcile the warring;
  • help in an important matter.

Due to numerous requests from readers, we have prepared an “Orthodox Calendar” application for smartphones. Every morning you will receive information about the current day: holidays, fasts, days of remembrance, prayers, parables. Download for free: Orthodox Calendar 2021 (available on Android)

And if you wear the icon on your chest, it is believed that it protects against the evil eye and damage.

The icon is also considered “anti-witch”: it is hung opposite the entrance so that the image can be “seen” by everyone who enters. It is believed that an evil person will not enter your house after this.

Inexhaustible Chalice

This is support for all those who have stumbled. The image calls to turn to Jesus - a “cup” of light and happiness that will never be empty.

  • Relatives of drunkards and alcoholics pray to her, asking the Mother of God to save a loved one from an addiction.
  • Nowadays, relatives of drug addicts and people who have succumbed to other addictions (casinos, gaming) have also begun to pray to the “Chalice.”

The holy face should be hung near the head of the bed of a sick person.

Healer

The lists of this icon differ - one depicts a sick young guy, another a man, the third a woman. In fact, the history of the creation of the icon is connected with the healing of a Georgian cleric. Our Lady came in person to help him.

  • They pray to her, as you might guess, for the health of themselves and their loved ones. You can even ask for health for the enemy, only sincerely.
  • She also helps in healing mental pain, so worship her when life gets tough or depression strikes.

Unexpected joy

This icon depicts a kneeling man. This is a hypocritical “righteous man” who sinned terribly, but before that he prayed to the Mother of God. And one day he saw that Jesus’ wounds had opened and blood was flowing out of them. The Mother of God told him that this was because of the dishonorable life that such “believers” lead. The sinner began to ask for mercy, and Jesus forgave. That man began to live righteously.

They pray to the icon:

  • about heavenly support;
  • about what they don’t want to receive (not only material, but also spiritual);
  • about health;
  • about the reconciliation of fathers and children, the correction of teenagers who have fallen into bad company;
  • about the end of the quarrel;
  • for the return of a missing person (most often, children and grandchildren of old people who leave home and forget the way back ask for this).

Three-handed

One of the most controversial icons.

The Virgin Mary has three hands here. But these are only lists of the original stored in the Athos Monastery. There the hand is not drawn, but made of metal and attached to the icon. And it does not belong to the Mother of God, but to John of Damascus. His hand was cut off due to malicious slander for an offense that he did not commit. John prayed for a long time to this particular icon, and a miracle happened - it grew.

They pray to her for:

  • healing from illness associated with the hands;
  • salvation from other diseases;
  • getting rid of problems;
  • and also asking for protection from fire.

Burning bush

It symbolizes one of the scenes of the Old Testament. When the prophet Moses prayed on Mount Sinai, the Lord descended to him in the form of a burning, but not scorching, thorn bush.

In the New Testament, the Mother of God is considered the Bush, who also shines with true faith and holiness.

She is asked about:

  • forgiveness of sins;
  • healing mental disorders and diseases;
  • protecting a house or apartment from fire;
  • she is the patroness of pilots, doctors, soldiers and firefighters.

Everlasting Color

A lily is depicted in the hands of the Madonna or Child. The flower means purity. The icon tells that Mary was blameless at the time of the conception of the Son of God.

She will help:

  • young girls do not lose their purity;
  • get married to your loved one;
  • For married women, it brings a quiet and happy family life.

Unbreakable Wall

The original icon is depicted in mosaic style. It is located in the Kiev St. Sophia Cathedral. The image received its name because it remained unharmed, no matter what wars and disasters swept over this holy monastery.

  • The icon is considered an intercessor and protector from many troubles: illness, ill-wishers, thieves, even divorce. Therefore, many hang it opposite the entrance so that evil does not enter their apartment or house.

Mourning

There are many different images in the world in which the Mother of God is depicted without little Jesus, and Her face is sad. This word is sometimes even used to call the “Seven Arrow” icon. But in our country this image is considered miraculous. It is also known as Crimean, because it was found in the Feodosia region.

One parishioner donated an old icon, darkened by time, to the church. When they placed it on the altar, the colors on it suddenly became bright, and the icon was miraculously transformed. However, no one restored it.

She is venerated on November 6, the same day when the icon “Joy of All Who Sorrow” is remembered.

They contact her:

  • when life becomes especially difficult, the soul is sad and sorrowful;
  • when a person is sick (this means not only physical, but also mental illnesses);
  • they ask her for benefits (say, couples who dream of owning their own home, or even children who want a really expensive toy);
  • it is considered to protect merchants going on long journeys, so buy an icon if one of your relatives often goes on business trips, especially trade ones.

The joy of all joys

The second name of the icon is Seraphim’s Surprise. The name is associated with Seraphim of Sarov. This icon (“Tenderness”) was his cell image. When he prayed to her, his soul flew away to God.

She needs to pray calmly, without anger, and most importantly, without fuss.

Ask:

  • for help if you have been slandered;
  • about rescue from prison, as well as assistance at trial;
  • about finding an important thing you lost;
  • about protection in a foreign land;
  • about intercession for a soldier who serves in a dangerous place.

Vladimirskaya

A very old image. He saw many coronations of kings, as well as the election of high priests.

He helps:

  • reconcile people who are in a quarrel;
  • calm down an angry person (many people keep the icon on their desk, fearing that their boss will soon punish them);
  • it also eases the suffering of demoniac people.

Kazanskaya

During the time of Ivan the Terrible, there was a terrible fire in Kazan, the temple burned down, and there were no shrines left in that part of the city. But the Mother of God came to a little girl in a dream and asked her to dig up her icon, hidden in ancient times, from the ground. It turned out to be healing. The shrine greatly supported the people of Kazan who had lost their faith after the problems that befell them.

She can:

  • solve problems (various - personal, work);
  • protect against making the wrong decision;
  • it is also the patroness of the family; It is good to bless young people going to a wedding with this particular icon.

Iveron Icon of the Mother of God

The image of the Iveron Mother of God is also considered one of the most revered in Orthodoxy. and its appearance is completely shrouded in mysticism.

In the 19th century, when the persecution of Orthodox icons began, one pious widow secretly kept the icon of the Mother of God. But one day soldiers burst into her house and one of them, seeing the image of the Mother of God, pierced it with a spear. But then, in front of the eyes of frightened eyewitnesses, blood poured from the cheek of the Mother of God. Mad with fear, the soldiers fell to their knees and began to pray for forgiveness for their sin, and then, saving the shrine, they set it adrift on the waves. And then a miracle happened again. The icon stood up and floated. After some time, guests of the Iveron Monastery noticed a luminous pillar above the sea. Approaching it, they discovered the holy image of the Virgin Mary floating on the water and emitting a glow. It was decided to place the icon in the chapel, but in the morning it was found above the monastery gates. Attempts to take her to her original place each time were in vain, until one day in a dream Elder Gabriel saw the Blessed Virgin, who said that she did not want to be protected, she herself should be the Guardian. So, the icon was placed over the gates of the monastery for many years, and they began to call it the Goalkeeper. Many times she miraculously saved the monks from fires, enemies and hunger.

The Most Holy Theotokos of Iveron continues to show people her miracles to this day. In front of her icon they pray for repentance of sins, for healing from illnesses, for deliverance from sorrows and sorrows. Icon of the Holy Matrona of Moscow

Holy Blessed Matrona is the most revered Moscow saint. Matronushka, as many affectionately call her, lived a hard life full of hardships. She was born into a poor peasant family and was completely blind from birth. Already at the age of eight, she began to predict and heal all those who suffered, and with the onset of 18 years, she lost the ability to walk. During the revolutionary years, she had to wander around Moscow a lot, without a roof over her head.

All her life she helped everyone in need. It was she who predicted the beginning of the Great Patriotic War and said that the Russian people would win. She predicted her death three days in advance, but continued to receive people. Matronushka still helps all believers who turn to her with prayer in healing from illnesses, in financial matters, in preserving the family, in the well-being of children and much more.

The whole life of this strong woman became an example of a great spiritual feat of love, patience, and self-denial.

Images of other saints

Of course, we have other miraculous faces. A lot of them. But the strongest are considered...

Seraphim of Sarov

One of the most popular saints in Russia.

Seraphim was born in Kursk, came to the church in the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, and all his life he served the Lord in the Saratov desert.

They pray to him for:

  • peace of mind, finding the true path;
  • about health (including healing from really serious illnesses);
  • girls ask for marriage;
  • some entrepreneurs ask for good luck in their business (however, the icon will only help if you promise to give part of your earnings to charity - and, of course, fulfill this promise).

St. George the Victorious

This saint is considered the patron saint of Moscow.

During his lifetime, Georgy was a warrior, so soldiers and other law enforcement officials (and, of course, their mothers and wives) most often turn to him. Athletes are also asking for help. Finally, businessmen turn to Georgy.

Nikolai Ugodnik the Wonderworker

And this saint is the most popular in Ukraine. The kids here believe that St. Nicholas on his winter holiday goes to the homes of obedient children and puts sweets and even toys under their pillows.

The saint is asked to:

  • salvation from poverty and poverty (since during his life the saint helped everyone in trouble);
  • Sailors and pilots, drivers, as well as travelers consider him their patron (the small icon is worth taking with you both on a business trip and on vacation).

But, of course, all the icons that you see here are simply copies of the original miraculous faces. Is it worth praying to them, buying small icons in church? Or is it better to go on a pilgrimage to the original icons, and all other prayers will not help? Father answers:

Icon of Blessed Xenia of St. Petersburg

Xenia of Petersburg is one of the most beloved Russian saints. An icon with her image is not uncommon in an Orthodox home. The gift of foresight and healing came to her after the death of her husband. Having become a widow at an early age, Ksenia fell into deep despair. She distributed all her property to the poor, gave a house to her friend, put on the clothes of her late husband and began to call herself by his name. These oddities are in no way connected with loss of reason, Ksenia simply decided to completely devote herself to serving God, protecting herself from earthly joys and blessings. Years of wandering began. She spent most of her time near Churches. She spent the night in the open air in fervent prayers addressed to God, deliberately not wearing warm clothes, forcing her body to suffer from the cold. At first, people laughed at Ksenia, but soon they began to notice that after communicating with her, even fleetingly, their lives began to change for the better. Local merchants tried to treat her to food, and then all the goods quickly sold out. If the Blessed One kissed children, then they grew up healthy. For her righteousness, Ksenia acquired the gift of foresight. She predicted the death of Elizabeth I the day before her death. She once sent her friend to the cemetery, saying that there she would find a child. She, frightened, ran to the indicated place and on the way saw how a pregnant woman was hit by a horse. The woman in labor died, but managed to give birth to a baby, who was adopted by Ksenia’s friend. And there were a great many such cases of foresight. Even after her death, she appeared in visions to people who were in difficult life circumstances, warning them of danger. A prayer addressed to her always finds a response and helps even in the most difficult matter.

Where should you not keep icons at home?

There are no specific rules for having a particular icon in the house. Proper placement simply requires common sense.

  • Place the icon in absolutely any room. But in the bathroom or toilet, the icon, of course, will be inappropriate.
  • You cannot place the image near a TV, tape recorder, personal computer or other similar equipment. This is because to perform the ritual of prayer you need to concentrate, and such elements, even if they do not work, will, out of habit, attract your attention and begin to distract you.
  • Also, do not place your face where there are cosmetics, inappropriate books, toys, or various figurines. Posters of singers, actors, and famous personalities should not be placed near the faces.
  • It is also not advisable to place paintings or reproductions near icons, even if they have religious content.

Place icons in the appropriate place.
And most importantly, never place icons near any photographs. And it doesn't matter who is in these pictures. The priests categorically forbid doing this.

Icon of the Holy Guardian Angel

“Angel” is translated from Greek as messenger, messenger.” Serving as a conduit between man and the Lord, the Guardian Angel is called to express God's unconditional love for people through his care. Church ministers assure that a person receives his Angel only after the sacrament of Baptism. This is how a person gets his own protector, who is always nearby. The more faith a person has, the closer the Guardian Angel is to him.

Each element of the icon depicting an Angel has its own symbolism. The slightly tilted head of the Saint means readiness to help his ward at any moment, a green chiton and a pink shirt - serving people in the name of good, a sword and cross - the ability to see and warn of danger, wings - the ability to move from the real world to the divine.

The miraculous rescue of people who survived catastrophes, intuitive insights or prophetic dreams - this is how Angels invisibly take part in people’s lives, protecting each one of their wards.

You must have the Icon of the Guardian Angel in your home; you must pray in front of it in a secluded place with sincerity in your heart. People turn to this image when they need spiritual strength to overcome difficult periods in life. A prayer appeal to the Guardian Angel should always be done when you leave your home, so that God’s Messenger will protect you from unexpected misfortune and the evil intentions of people.
