The book “Biblical history. Old Testament. New Testament"
Alexander Pavlovich Lopukhin is an outstanding Russian biblical scholar, theologian and writer. His name occupies one of the first places among the names of outstanding Russian researchers of Biblical texts. Lopukhin collected and analyzed enormous chronological, archaeological, historical and ethnographic material, which allowed the scientist to compile a monumental work on the Biblical history of the Old and New Testaments. Lopukhin's commentaries on the books of Holy Scripture went through about 20 editions until 1917, and do not lose their relevance today thanks to an unusually deep understanding of Biblical history. And today we bring to your attention a new edition of this work. It was published by the Bertelsmann Media Publishing House Moscow and is called “Biblical History. Old Testament. New Testament". ***
For the first time, “Biblical History,” edited by Professor Alexander Pavlovich Lopukhin, was published in St. Petersburg, from 1904 to 1913, as a free supplement to the magazine “Wanderer.” When starting to publish this work, the editors of the magazine Fr.
In this book, the author reveals to us the historical significance of the facts stated in the Bible, proves that the biblical stories about the creation of man, the Fall, the flood, and the shift of languages have a real historical basis. The book provides many explanations of the life, realities, and traditions of the time when the Bible was created, which help to understand the depth and meaning of Biblical Scripture. In the preface to the first edition, Lopukhin Fr.
According to Alexander Pavlovich, this “circumstance has extremely revived interest in biblical history, which has ceased to be a dry specialty of theologians, and now attracts the attention of both secular learned historians and the entire educated society of all civilized peoples. This interest is also noticeable among us; but, unfortunately, in our country it has not yet emerged from the narrow confines of a circle of specialists, and for our society, in fact, there is literally not a single publicly available book that could serve as a guide or introduction to this deeply interesting and highly instructive field of knowledge. Satisfying this, in Lopukhin's opinion, urgent need is partly what this book is about.
In its main parts, it was compiled several years before its publication and was intended only as a summary for the personal study of a biblical scholar. But the consciousness of the deep need indicated above prompted him to process this summary in such a way that it could, at least in the slightest degree, give a coherent and living course of biblical history with the introduction into it of the most important features from the inexhaustible wealth of the latest biblical-historical research. The author intended his “guide” to be read in general, but would especially like it to find access among young students. According to the deep conviction of the author, biblical history can become an inexhaustible source of moral and higher historical education for any person more or less capable of serious mental life.
According to Professor Lopukhin, “every history is an educator of the mind and heart and a teacher of wisdom; but biblical history in this respect stands above all other stories, because its subject is the central points of the spiritual life of mankind. It reveals the deepest laws of world-historical development. It can show most clearly that in the history of peoples there is nothing accidental or arbitrary, that any attempt to “make history” is meaningless and harmful, because everything awaits and demands the “fulfillment of times,” which can neither be brought closer nor delayed. At the same time, it presents a series of deep everyday experiences of the greatest characters, who, with their virtues and no less their vices, widely open the door to the very depths of a person’s spiritual life. Thus the deepest lessons are taught for anyone with a sufficiently lively moral sense to perceive such astonishing experiences.
*** The first edition of this work at the beginning of the 20th century, according to the author, was met with lively sympathy from the spiritual and secular press, not only in Russia, but also abroad, and despite a significant number of printed copies, it sold out in a relatively short time and did not last for several years. was on sale. Since the demands for it continued, it was decided to make a second edition. And then again and again. To this day, Lopukhin’s “Biblical History” remains the only Russian-language interpretation of the Holy Scriptures in terms of completeness, correctness and detail of presentation. And, as before, it is intended for a wide range of readers.
