Temple of the Apostle Thomas on Kantemirovskaya

- a wooden Orthodox church in the south of Moscow, in the Moskvorechye-Saburovo area. Belongs to the Danilovsky deanery of the Moscow city diocese.

Built as a temporary church on the site of the future permanent Temple of the Prophet Daniel on Kantemirovskaya.

Story

The temple was erected and consecrated in November 2006. The main altar of the temple was consecrated in honor of the Apostle Thomas. Later, the temple was expanded by adding a long refectory with a belfry above the western entrance.

In August 2009, the Moscow Department of Natural Resources, pointing out the violation of environmental legislation by the activities of the community, announced its intention to demolish the temple[1]. On August 11, 2009, the deputy prefect of the Southern Administrative District stated that a decision in principle had been made to allow the construction of a temple in this place, and residents, during public hearings on the new General Plan of Moscow, demanded that the temple be included in the draft General Plan[2].

Father Daniel began to build a temporary temple with his own money

One of the significant figures in the life of Moscow believers was Priest Daniil Alekseevich Sysoev, known for his missionary and theological activities.

It was his dream to build a large, beautiful stone temple in honor of his heavenly patron - the biblical prophet Daniel.

Father Daniel was the “father” of the Temple of the Apostle Thomas

In 2005, the mayor's office allocated a place for the construction of a temple on the banks of the Chertanovka River, not far from Kashirskoye Highway. Father Daniel got to work.

It was clear to everyone that it would not be possible to build a large cathedral right away; it was not possible. Therefore, they decided to build a small temporary temple where people would start going.

2006 - the Church of the Apostle Thomas began work.

First they built a small house, similar to a country house.

The construction was carried out by parishioners

On November 11, 2006, a temporary temple was consecrated in honor of the Apostle Thomas. Father Daniel became the rector of the temple.

The only church in the area attracted many believers. There was soon no longer enough room for everyone.

A small temple cannot accommodate everyone

The temple had to be expanded: a large refectory was added to it, and a belfry was erected above the western entrance.

The temple began to expand almost immediately after construction

Father Daniel led active missionary and teaching activities at the church. On Thursdays, he held Bible talks - reading the Bible with interpretation - which attracted both believers and those wishing to join the faith.

The icons in the temple are unique: they were painted by special order of Father Daniel

Current state

Today, funds are being collected and permits are being processed for the construction of the temple complex.

Currently, a large church store has been created at the temple, which sells Orthodox books and audio CDs, icons and church utensils. A missionary Orthodox library, a singing school, an icon painting school, and a scout troop were created.

There is also a missionary movement at the church, which includes missionary training courses for Orthodox “street missionaries”, whose task was to attract people to the Orthodox faith by addressing passers-by on the street[3].

With the blessing of Fr. Daniil Sysoev painted the icon “The Council of Saints from Islam to Orthodoxy who Converted,” which depicts 16 saints, such as Abo of Tbilisi, martyr Ahmed Kalfa, Omir of Jerusalem, etc.[4].

The temple lost its founder in November 2009

Misfortune never comes alone. Father Daniel's active life position and missionary work brought him not only fame in the Orthodox community, but also many enemies, especially among Muslims. Father Daniel has repeatedly received threats from Muslim extremists.

On November 19, Father Daniel led traditional biblical conversations. After them, he traditionally stayed and talked with parishioners until late. When almost everyone had left, an unknown person burst into the temple with a medical mask on his face. He shot Father Daniel four times and fled.

Father Daniel was mortally wounded. On the night of Thursday to Friday, November 20, 2009, he died. He was 35 years old.

Thousands of people came to say goodbye to Father Daniel, who owed him guidance, admonition and the construction of the temple, so necessary for believers.

You can get to the temple by metro

Finding the Temple of the Apostle Thomas is easy:

Website of the missionary movement in honor of the Holy Prophet Daniel at the Temple of the Apostle Thomas

We take the metro to the Kantemirovskaya station. Then you need to move towards Kashirskoye Highway. You can walk until you turn onto the street. Kolobashkin, where the temple is located, is less than a kilometer away.

You can use public transport: get off at the Kantemirovskaya Metro stop and go to the next one, Proletarsky Prospekt, 19. There are buses 150, 164, 220, 701, trolleybuses 11, 11k.

You should cross the underground passage to the other side of Proletarsky Prospekt and continue along Kolobashkina Street. 100 m from the intersection there will be a temple on the left side.

It’s better not to take a car: although you can park on Kolobashkin Street, there is not enough space there.

An excerpt characterizing the Temple of Apostle Thomas on Kantemirovskaya

All guns fired in the direction of the fire without orders. As if urging them on, the soldiers shouted to each shot: “Dexterously! That's it! Look, you... It’s important!” The fire, carried by the wind, spread quickly. The French columns that had marched for the village retreated, but, as if in punishment for this failure, the enemy placed ten guns to the right of the village and began firing at Tushin with them. Because of the childish joy excited by the fire, and the excitement of successful shooting at the French, our artillerymen noticed this battery only when two cannonballs, followed by four more, struck between the guns and one knocked down two horses, and the other tore off the leg of the box leader. The revival, once established, however, did not weaken, but only changed the mood. The horses were replaced by others from the spare carriage, the wounded were removed, and four guns were turned against the ten-gun battery. The officer, Tushin's comrade, was killed at the beginning of the case, and within an hour, out of forty servants, seventeen dropped out, but the artillerymen were still cheerful and animated. Twice they noticed that the French appeared below, close to them, and then they hit them with grapeshot. The little man, with weak, awkward movements, constantly demanded another pipe from the orderly for this, as he said, and, scattering fire from it, ran forward and looked at the French from under his small hand. - Crash it, guys! - he said and he himself grabbed the guns by the wheels and unscrewed the screws. In the smoke, deafened by continuous shots that made him flinch every time, Tushin, without letting go of his nose warmer, ran from one gun to another, now taking aim, now counting the charges, now ordering the change and re-harnessing of dead and wounded horses, and shouted in his weak, thin voice, in a hesitant voice. His face became more and more animated. Only when people were killed or wounded did he wince and, turning away from the dead man, shout angrily at the people, as always, who were slow to raise the wounded man or the body. The soldiers, for the most part handsome fellows (as always in a battery company, two heads taller than their officer and twice as wide as him), all, like children in a difficult situation, looked at their commander, and the expression that was on his face remained unchanged reflected on their faces. As a result of this terrible hum, noise, need for attention and activity, Tushin did not experience the slightest unpleasant feeling of fear, and the thought that he could be killed or painfully wounded did not occur to him. On the contrary, he became more and more cheerful. It seemed to him that a very long time ago, almost yesterday, there was that minute when he saw the enemy and fired the first shot, and that the patch of field on which he stood was a long-familiar, familiar place to him. Despite the fact that he remembered everything, understood everything, did everything that the best officer in his position could do, he was in a state similar to feverish delirium or the state of a drunken person. Because of the deafening sounds of their guns from all sides, because of the whistle and blows of the enemy’s shells, because of the sight of the sweaty, flushed servants hurrying around the guns, because of the sight of the blood of people and horses, because of the sight of the enemy’s smoke on the other side (after which everyone once a cannonball flew in and hit the ground, a person, a weapon or a horse), because of the sight of these objects, his own fantastic world was established in his head, which was his pleasure at that moment. The enemy cannons in his imagination were not cannons, but pipes, from which an invisible smoker released smoke in rare puffs. “Look, he puffed again,” Tushin said in a whisper to himself, while a puff of smoke jumped out of the mountain and was blown to the left by the wind in a stripe, “now wait for the ball and send it back.” -What do you order, your honor? - asked the fireworksman, who stood close to him and heard him muttering something. “Nothing, a grenade...” he answered. “Come on, our Matvevna,” he said to himself. Matvevna imagined in his imagination a large, extreme, antique cast cannon. The French appeared to him like ants near their guns. The handsome and drunkard number two of the second gun in his world was his uncle; Tushin looked at him more often than others and rejoiced at his every move. The sound of the gunfire, which either died down or intensified again under the mountain, seemed to him like someone’s breathing. He listened to the fading and flaring up of these sounds. “Look, I’m breathing again, I’m breathing,” he said to himself. He himself imagined himself to be of enormous stature, a powerful man who threw cannonballs at the French with both hands. - Well, Matvevna, mother, don’t give it away! - he said, moving away from the gun, when an alien, unfamiliar voice was heard above his head:

Acute shortage of churches in the capital

The shortage of churches was especially acute in the Southern Administrative District of Moscow. The main part of its territory was built up during Soviet times. It is quite clear that in the urban planning projects of those years there was no place for God’s churches. As a result, in the territory where more than two hundred thousand people currently live, there was not a single temple.

It was impossible to allow this to happen, and the Moscow City Diocese did not stand aside. The issue was submitted for consideration to the leadership of the Danilovsky deanery, on whose territory the Southern District is located. In accordance with the decision he made, the Church of the Apostle Thomas was built on Kantemirovskaya. Construction work, carried out exclusively through voluntary donations from future parishioners, was completed in 2006.

When regular services began in the church, it turned out that the premises were not able to accommodate everyone who wanted to attend the services, and they decided to expand it. As a result, a spacious refectory was added to the existing building. In addition, a belfry was erected above the western entrance, which undoubtedly decorated the building.
