The meaning of the icon of the Mother of God of the Blessed Sky, in which prayers also help

Not only in Holy Rus', but also in all parts of our planet, the Mother of God is revered. In total there are more than 800 images of the Virgin Mary. One of the most interesting types of images painted in honor of Her is considered to be an akathist-collective icon. Particularly noteworthy is the “Blessed Sky”.

Icon of the Mother of God “Blessed Heaven”

Description of the image of the Mother of God

The Mother of God is depicted in the full majesty of Heavenly glory - the plot is taken from the Apocalypse, inspired by the visions of John the Theologian. The Most Pure Virgin with the Child Christ in her arms is depicted full-length, resting her feet on the clouds (month). John described this Queen of Heaven; according to the prophet’s predictions, the Mother of God will appear in all the splendor of Divine glory before the second coming of Christ.

Iconographic features of the image of the Virgin Mary:

  1. The Holy Virgin is depicted as a heavenly creature hovering above the earth, only slightly supported by a moon or cloud.
  2. The Baby Jesus sits on the left hand of the Mother of God, with the right hand of the Virgin Mary supporting the Son. Jesus' hands are raised up, pointing the way to the Kingdom of Heaven.
  3. The figures are depicted in a shining capsule (mandorla). The oval halo illuminates the Virgin Mary and Christ with bright rays, symbolizing the Divine glory.
  4. The heads are crowned with crowns - symbols of the Supreme Power.
  5. On the lists, prophets, saints, and plot pictures from the Gospel are often written around the main figures.
  6. On some copies of the icon, the Virgin Mary is depicted with royal symbols in her hands.

The prototype of the “Blessed Sky” is considered to be the ancient image of the Virgin Mary “Woman clothed with the sun”.

The icon is painted in bright colors, the figures are clearly drawn. The image glorifies the Mother of God as a Queen who has Supreme power, evokes a feeling of deep reverence and admiration for the feat of the Blessed Virgin.

Why do you dream about a star in the sky - basic interpretation

The starry sky has always attracted people with its mystery and secrets. Stars from Earth seem so small, although in fact they are enormous in size. In some religions it is generally accepted that stars are the souls of deceased ancestors. But why do you dream about a star in the sky?

Such a dream usually promises good luck and success, the possibility of concluding a profitable deal, or resolving a difficult situation. A shooting star promises a person a lot of luck and success. But if it suddenly goes out in the sky or begins to shine very dimly, you should expect troubles and misfortune.

If you dreamed about a five-pointed star, expect a happy coincidence of circumstances and luck in life. If the star is six-pointed, it will not be possible to do without sorrows and trials. If the star is seven-pointed, your cherished wish will come true. A few stars in the sky means good news. If the whole sky is strewn with stars, you are on the right path. If you hold stars in your hands in a dream, prosperity and joy await you. Starfall in a dream - the girl’s love wishes will come true, it is even possible to meet her future husband.

Meaning in Orthodoxy

Akathist icons glorify the Divine essence of the Mother of God, without focusing on the earthly life of the Virgin Mary. The Mother of God ascended after death and became the Queen of Heaven.

The meaning of the image is the glorification and magnification of the Most Pure Virgin, the hymn and praise of the Mother of God. Located in a halo of light and reverence, the Mother of God patronizes the entire human race and is an intercessor before the Throne of God for Christians. Everyone who needs intercession, support, and help turns to her in prayer. All Orthodox believe in the prayers of the Mother of God.

The image of the Mother of God “Gracious Sky” is considered a symbol of the Universal Church of Christ, and the Virgin Mary herself is considered a prayer book for the human race.

Earliest versions

In the mid-17th century, an icon was painted for the Church of the Holy Trinity, which is located in Nikitinki. There are no rays of light on this icon, but there is a light halo that frames the Virgin Mary. A special feature here is also the presence of Andrei Kritsky and George Khozovit, who are saints named after the people who built the church in Nikitinki.

In 1682, Vasily Poznansky created another image for the Kremlin, the Gracious Heaven, which in many ways resembles the original images from the Catholic tradition. There is a crescent moon here, and there are also soaring angels that are located in the space of cloudy radiance. A similar version is now kept on the territory of the Tretyakov Gallery; this icon was created in the 18th century.

History of appearance and acquisition

It was not possible to accurately trace the history of the appearance of the “Blessed Heaven” icon in Russia. Historians consider two possible versions of the acquisition of the miraculous image.

The first legend says that the shrine came to Moscow from Smolensk back in the 14th century. The image was there for some time, it was among other old icons that arrived from the diocese of Constantinople. The mention is found in the Trinity chronicles for 1398. The Lithuanian princess Sofia brought him from Smolensk when she was going to marry Prince Vasily of Moscow. Sources of the 19th and early 20th centuries supported this version of the acquisition of the image.

According to the second version, “The Gracious Sky” was brought to Moscow by Sofia Paleologus, the wife of Ivan III.

The ancient shrine could not be preserved to this day. Russian icon painters in the 17th century made a copy of the original. The masters of the Armory were able to accurately reproduce the wonderful image; the copy was not inferior to the original in terms of its impact on believers.

Information: before the start of the revolution, the “Blessed Heaven” icon was one of the most revered miraculous images in Moscow. Pilgrims flocked from all over Russia, the Mother of God performed many miracles through prayers in front of the shrine.

Holy addresses

Both historically significant and locally revered lists of the “Blessed Heaven” can be found in the capital:

  • The famous image, painted from the original source, is still part of the iconostasis in the Cathedral of St. Michael the Archangel (Arkhangelsk);
  • there is a list in the Holy Cross (Ruspyat) Church, which is in the Grand Kremlin Palace;

There are no services held in this temple - it is part of the presidential residence.

  • Church of the Life-Giving Trinity, on the Sparrow Hills;
  • Church of the Archangel Gabriel on Chistye Prudy.

Tutaevsky Resurrection Cathedral (Yaroslavl region) also has it.

Where are the revered lists?

The “Blessed Heaven” icon has not survived in the original, but only in several copies that are locally revered or have historical significance. Highly revered copies of the miraculous image of the Mother of God are located:

  1. Cathedral of St. Michael the Archangel, Cathedral Square, Kremlin, Moscow. The most ancient list, miraculous, dates back to the 17th century.
  2. Crucifixion Church, Kremlin, Moscow. Services are not held in the temple; it is part of the residence of the President of the Russian Federation.
  3. Trinity Church, Vorobyovy Gory, Moscow. The icon was lost for a long time, then found again. University students used the list for everyday needs. After being found, the icon was miraculously renewed.
  4. Church of the Archangel Gabriel, Chistye Prudy, Moscow. Another name is Menshikov Tower.
  5. For the Vaulovsky monastery, Yaroslavl region (Tutaev). The list was made at the request of John of Kronstadt at the beginning of the 20th century. The saint loved the icon and performed 40 liturgies in its honor.

The icon painted by Viktor Vasnetsov enjoys special reverence, artistic value and fame. The great artist received an order to paint the image of the Mother of God from the Vladimir Church in Kyiv, but refused because his son was seriously ill. He lived with his family outside the city and one day he saw his wife with a baby in her arms, illuminated by the sun's rays.

The baby raised his hands to the bright sun, and Vasnetsov was shocked by the touching picture. He realized that he had to paint the Mother of God and what the icon should look like.

At this time, a wall was being prepared in the Kiev Cathedral for painting the icon. Suddenly, on the prepared plaster, the work manager Prahov and the craftsmen saw a clearly visible image of the Mother of God with the baby Jesus in her arms, bathed in the sun’s rays. The professor took out a paper and sketched an image, which soon disappeared from the wall.

When Vasnetsov, who arrived in Kyiv, showed the sketch, the professor showed him the sketched picture. They miraculously coincided, everyone understood that this was God’s providence. Vasnetsov began work and in 2 years painted the icon of the Mother of God “Blessed Heaven,” which has been loved and revered by the Orthodox for many years.

Location

The miraculous image of the Mother of God, called “What Shall We Call You,” was introduced into the iconostasis of the Moscow Archangel Cathedral (in the Kremlin) to the left of the royal doors. This is a list created by icon painters of the Armory Chamber (in 1678 -1680) in accordance with the original delivered by Princess Sophia.

Another copy was transferred to the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross (Grand Kremlin Palace). It is an application icon. It was compiled in 1682 by Vasily Poznansky.

There are locally revered lists in other churches in Moscow: the Trinity Church (Sparrow Hills) and the Church of the Archangel Gabriel (Chistye Prudy).

Veneration and days of celebration

Special veneration of the icon developed in the 19th century. At the direction of Metropolitan Philaret, information was collected about miracles revealed through prayers before the icon. At this time, the restoration of the Archangel Cathedral was carried out. After an investigation, the image was recognized as miraculous, and the number of pilgrims increased.

The icon was deeply revered not only by the Orthodox. A sick Christian woman professing Lutheranism saw a miraculous image in a dream. She sent her Orthodox maid to the temple to pray for intercession and healing. After six weeks of prayers, the Lutheran woman was completely cured and began to go to church herself to venerate the wonderful image.

In Orthodox churches the icon is glorified:

  • March 19;
  • on the week of All Saints.

Airborne troops honor the icon as their intercessor. In field churches, in parts of the Airborne Forces, there are lists of the image, churches are consecrated in honor of the icon. Alexander Pokryshkin, a hero of the Second World War, a famous pilot, was born on the day of the celebration of the image. The Mother of God protected the hero and protected him with an invisible hand during heavy battles.

The medal, called “Blessed Sky”, with the image of the Mother of God, was established to reward those who defend the air borders of the Motherland and explore space.

Miracles

Initially, the icon did not have such great popularity among Orthodox believers. This began only when Metropolitan Filaret Drozdov in 1853 ordered the collection of historical data about the face, which was at that time among the reconstructed iconostasis of the Archangel Cathedral. After there was enough data to say that this image was miraculous, parishioners began to bring oil, lamps and candles to it, and the Metropolitan ordered that a festive liturgy be held in front of it twice a year.

Before the revolution, believers in Moscow especially revered three shrines:

Vladimir Mother of God; “Unexpected joy”; “Blessed Heaven”.

It is believed that it was through these shrines that the Lord abundantly blessed people and performed healings. Among the miracles, several stand out in particular.

One Lutheran woman suffered from a severe illness for a long time and one day she had a prophetic dream. She saw this image in a dream and when she woke up, she sent the governess to order a prayer service for him for health. The girl followed the order and performed the same action for another 6 weeks. After this, her sick owner fully recovered and was able to visit the temple herself and order a prayer service. In 1885, the artist Vasnetsov was invited to the Vladimir Church to paint. But the artist refused due to his son’s serious illness. Arriving at the dacha with his family, the artist one day noticed his wife holding their son in the rays of sunlight. The picture that struck him became so ingrained in his head that he realized that this is how the Mother of God should be depicted. After this, Vasnetsov went to paint the temple. During preparation for painting, the Vladimir Church was plastered several times, and the applied mass dried unevenly. The workers and managers who were watching this one day noticed on the wall a visible image of the Virgin Mary with Christ in her arms, exactly the same as what Vasnetsov had seen at his dacha. They sketched it, and after a couple of hours the wall finally dried. Vasnetsov showed his sketches to the leaders of the temple and they checked them with the sketch from the wall - the drawings were almost identical in their compositional parameters. The artist was amazed and said: “This was God’s order.” The already deceased oldest caretaker of the Moscow Church of the Life-Giving Trinity, Maria Andreevna, said that the list in this temple was found in a landfill near the Moscow State University dormitory by students who used it for beds, placing it instead of a mattress. Some time after arriving at the temple, it was miraculously renewed so that the restorer only had to add a fragment in the corner. Important! Thanks to its miracles, the image is especially revered by believers of the Orthodox Church. An akathist was even written for him, which is read during festivities in the temple.

What do they ask for in front of the icon?

The icon symbolizes the Divine power of the Most Pure Virgin, therefore, according to prayer traditions, one should turn to it with spiritual problems. The icon helps to find the right path in life and strengthen faith.

The Mother of God in front of the image of “Gracious Heaven” is asked:

  • about overcoming the feeling of being abandoned by God, loss of faith;
  • about intercession in the fight against serious temptations;
  • with prolonged depression, despondency, loss of joy in life;
  • about getting rid of addictions of various kinds - alcoholism, drug addiction, computer addiction;
  • for protection against heresies, cravings for witchcraft, the occult;
  • if necessary, save yourself and your loved ones from the influence of sects and devilish obsessions;
  • about help in the fight against serious vices - pride, vanity, selfishness, envy;
  • about protection from dangers, sudden death;
  • about assistance in resolving complex conflict situations in the family and at work.

You can also turn to the image of the Mother of God in simple everyday needs, asking for advice, protection, and guidance.

Helper All-Good

How does the icon of the Mother of God “Blessed Heaven” help? The “register” of requests that are raised to her is quite extensive. We can distinguish both ordinary, so to speak, traditional human problems, and slightly atypical ones. Waiting for help:

  • Prayer will help in the fight against any addiction. for physical ailments;
  • mental disorders;
  • various addictions, including drug addiction;
  • the deviation of loved ones from the Orthodox faith - to return to the bosom of the Church;
  • in a prosperous marriage;
  • the birth of healthy children;
  • before a long journey;
  • the beginning of any good deed.

The world is full of evil and injustice, and often only the help of Heaven can save us from envious people, slanderers and unkind people, and protect us from minor misfortunes and major disasters. They also ask for protection from death, which happened suddenly and therefore without repentance.

Statesmen come to the Mother of God for help and admonition in governing the country, asking for the worthy fulfillment of the duties assigned to them, with a request to protect the state from natural disasters and enemy invasion.

The “Blessed Sky” icon patronizes the Airborne Forces. Those who have proven themselves in protecting the airspace and borders of the Motherland are now awarded a medal of the same name, established not so long ago.

During the Great Patriotic War, the icon protected the fighter pilot, the first three times Hero of the Soviet Union A.I. Pokryshkina.

It is interesting that he was born on the day of veneration of this image, and in life it turned out that the sky was truly fertile for him.

During the Chechen War, as protection from enemies, for the spiritual nourishment of soldiers, and the healing of those injured in battles, a military field church, consecrated in honor of this Mother of God icon, worked.

Orthodox texts

Solemn services in honor of the icon are held in Orthodox churches. An akathist was written to the glory of the image.

Troparion

What shall we call You, O Blessed One? Sky? Because the Sun of Truth has risen on You. Heaven? Because You have grown an immortal Flower. Virgo? Because she remained pure. Pure Mother? Because you held the Son and God for everyone in your holy arms. Pray to Him for the salvation of our souls.

Kontakion

We have no other help, we have no other hope, except You, Lady. Help us, we rely on You and are proud of You, because we are Your servants, let us not fear anything.

Prayer

What shall we call You, O Blessed Mother of God, Immaculate Mary? With what hymns shall we exalt Thee, exalted by Heaven and earth, Angels and men? For there appeared upon You a mystery unheard of for centuries on earth and unknown to the Angels in Heaven, more than mind and word, the incarnation of God the Word, born from the beginning from the beginning of the Father without a mother and incarnate in Your womb and with the imperishable seal of Your virginity.

Oh, the miracle of all ancient and new miracles! The immutable word of God Himself about the victorious seed of the wife was fulfilled and perfected in the Husbandless Virgin. Oh, the immeasurable depth of the wisdom and greatness of God! What names shall we call Thee, O Unbrided Bride? Shall we call Thee the dawn of the sun rising in the sky? But You are Heaven itself, from You comes this Sun of Truth - Christ our God, the Savior of sinners.

Do we call You the gate leading into the paradise lost by our ancestors, abounding in all blessings? But You Yourself are a blessed paradise, having grown the Flower of incorruption, healing and driving away the stink of sin and the stench of ancestral corruption. Shall we call You the young Immaculate Virgin who has not known marriage? But even to your old age you remained undisguised and virgin until birth, and in the birth, and after the birth of the Son, you remained.

Shall we call Thee Pure and Holy Mary, who with Her purity surpassed all mothers and foremothers? But You not only gave birth to That Child Christ, but also carried Him with Your breasts and nourished Your mother with virgin milk, the One Who nourishes every creature, Whom the Heavenly powers stand before with fear and trembling, and Whom every breath and creature praises.

Oh, truly You are wonderful in wives, wonderful in virgins, inimitable in mothers! We fall before You before Your Divine face and before Your holy feet we cast down and lay down all our thoughts, desires, intentions and feelings. Sanctify them with Your Mother of God charity and lift them up, like the sacrifice of our humble heart, like a little-valued mite of our spiritual poverty, to the Throne of Your Son, our Savior, so that the message of destinies will guide our path to salvation and the inheritance of His Kingdom, which has no end forever and ever. . Amen.

What was the heaven like in the dream?

A clear sky with stars marks the emergence of hope that your expectations will be met and you will finally achieve your desired goal. Life ahead is calm, filled with happiness.

A starry sky covered with clouds or clouds indicates some obstacles in business and projects, because clouds are a symbol of interference.
