Historical reference

The church was built as part of the “200 Temples” project. It envisaged the construction of two hundred places in the capital where Moscow residents could take part in worship. On March 1, 2012, His Holiness the Patriarch personally laid the first stone in the foundation. After this, he consecrated the construction site and blessed the workers.

For the construction of the temple, an agreement was concluded with. She completed the work 3 years after it began - in 2015. It is interesting that their end occurred on a major Orthodox holiday - the Day of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, which is celebrated on November 4. In the temple, it was decided to immediately hold a solemn service in his honor, which was personally led by Patriarch Kirill. Since then, the church has been open to parishioners every day.

A Brief History of the Hieromartyr Patriarch Hermogenes

The Temple of Hermogenes in Krylatskoye is dedicated to the Moscow patriarch of the 17th century, who suffered martyrdom and was subsequently canonized. This is due to the fact that 400 years have passed from the date of his death to the time of construction.

The patriarchate of Hermogenes fell on a time of troubles, when the territory of the Muscovite Kingdom was occupied by the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. He advocated the start of a national liberation struggle against the Poles, for which he was thrown into prison.

Despite this, the patriarch, even from captivity, continued to inspire the Russian army. For this, they stopped giving him food, which is why on February 27, 1612, according to the new style, he died of hunger in his cell. On May 25, 1913, by decree of Tsar Nicholas II, Hermogenes was canonized. The Patriarch is still revered to this day.

For reference! In the old Russian manner, the name was sometimes pronounced as Hermogenes, which is how it was written down in old books and historical documents. Therefore, today many people are looking for the Temple of Hermogenes in Krylatskoye, not suspecting that the official name is written in modern language.

Exterior

The temple was built in a strict architectural style, without frills. It combines elements of traditional Russian architecture and Dutch Baroque, so beloved by Emperor Peter I.

Above the entrance there is a small belfry with several bells, which is crowned with a small dome. Above the temple itself there is a high tent. But not traditional Russian, but baroque. Above the tent there is also a small dome - an onion. On either side of it are tall arches, at the bottom of which are the northern and southern entrances. In the east of the temple there are three semicircular altars.

Around the Church of St. Ermogen has paths and picturesque lawns. This not only allows believers to rest after the service, but also makes it easier to conduct a religious procession. In the evening, the temple area is illuminated with beautiful forged lanterns.

To the left of the main entrance is a bronze statue of Patriarch Hermogenes (Hermogenes).

A monument to Patriarch Hermogenes was unveiled in Moscow

Unveiling of the monument to Patriarch Hermogenes in the Alexander Garden

“God grant that through the erection of this monument in the center of the capital city, love for the Fatherland will be strengthened in the hearts of our citizens, the Orthodox faith will be strengthened, the desire and desire to do everything will be strengthened so that the life of the country develops, so that it becomes spiritually and materially richer, so that intercultural “, interreligious and interethnic interaction of all those who make up the body of the united people of Russia increased, and through this nationwide solidarity and unity the life of our Fatherland was strengthened,” said Patriarch Kirill after the consecration.

The opening and consecration of the monument was attended by the head of the Kremlin administration Sergei Ivanov, the head of presidential affairs Vladimir Kozhin, the head of the Old Believer Church, Metropolitan Cornelius, the Patriarch of Jerusalem Theophilos III, who is on a visit to Russia, and the clergy of Moscow.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, who sent a greeting, noted that Patriarch Hermogenes was one of the outstanding and bright figures in the history of Russia, who, with his personal example, courage and perseverance, inspired the people to heroism, and “victory over the turmoil was achieved not only by force of arms, but strength of spirit, power of unity and great love for the Fatherland.” “The erection of the monument to Patriarch Hermogenes serves as an example of creative, constructive cooperation between the state, society and the Russian Orthodox Church,” the president emphasized in his message.

The head of the Russian presidential administration, Sergei Ivanov, said that this was “a landmark day for Russia.”

The idea of this monument is about 200 years old. According to the original plan, it should stand on the site of the Mausoleum, opposite the monument to Minin and Pozharsky. Moreover, the role of Patriarch Hermogenes in the history of Russia is akin to the role of the leaders of the people’s militia, of whom he was a contemporary. What was completed under the leadership of Minin and Pozharsky was begun and inspired by Patriarch Hermogenes. It was for this boldness to inspire the people not to submit to the invaders and foreign faith, for his letters calling for the formation of a militia that he was imprisoned in the dungeon of the Chudov Monastery and starved to death in the “troubled” year of 1612.

In 1913, he was canonized, his holy relics were transferred to the Assumption Cathedral of the Kremlin, and the installation of a monument was on the agenda. The First World War and revolution prevented its construction.

And then 4 years ago the idea was revived - the public movement “People's Council” and the Women's Orthodox Patriotic Society took the initiative to install the monument. She was supported by the Patriarch and the President.

Over the course of 4 years, religious processions took place, a temple was laid in honor of the holy martyr Hermogenes in Krylatskoye and a foundation stone for the monument to St. Hermogenes near the Kremlin. A competition was announced to create a monument, a jury was created, and people raised funds.

The winner of the project competition was the creative team led by People's Artist of Russia Salavat Shcherbakov and Honored Architect of Russia Igor Voskresensky.

And 100 years after the glorification of the saint, the monument to the patriarch-martyr was consecrated and solemnly opened.

“Yes, it does not stand in the place that was planned 100 years ago,” said the head of the presidential administration, Sergei Ivanov, at its consecration, “but it is good that we have fulfilled our historical duty.” Both the current generation and future generations of people will look at this monument with pride, wonder who it was erected to and why, and be interested in our history,” said Sergei Ivanov.
