Michael the Archangel Church (Mikhailovskaya Sloboda)

***

In the village of Mikhailovskaya Sloboda, Ramensky district, there is the largest parish in the Russian Orthodox Church, where they serve according to the old rite. Old Believers who recognize the government of the Moscow Patriarchate are called co-religionists. Edinoverie officially arose in Russia in 1800, and the church in Mikhailovskaya Sloboda received this status in 1817. In the 1990s, the Moscow Edinoverie community moved from the Rogozhskoe cemetery to Mikhailovskaya Sloboda, and a Edinoverie center with churches and chapels arose here.

Old Believers, Connectors and Edinobelievers

From the middle of the 17th century, the Old Believers were brutally persecuted by the state and the official church, but during the time of Catherine II, the attitude towards them softened. The first attempts appeared to attract schismatics to the official church through concessions. In 1779, in the village of Znamenka in Ukraine, the bishop of the official church created a parish for local Old Believers, where they were allowed to serve according to their rank. In the 1780s, representatives of the Old Believers of Starodubye approached Count Rumyantsev-Zadunaisky and Prince Potemkin with a request for such a parish. The Old Believers, who came under the control of the official clergy, but retained their church and everyday life, began to be called “connections.”

In 1800, under Tsar Paul I, Moscow Metropolitan Platon (Levshin) developed common conditions for all Old Believers to join the official church. This document was called “Points of Unity of Faith.” The Old Believers who came over from the schism were allowed to serve according to the old rite in separate churches and were not allowed into these churches “those signified by three fingers, shaving braids and others who disagree with ancient customs.” Thus, co-religionists did not merge with ordinary Orthodox Christians, but remained separate communities.

Metropolitan Platon Levshin supported the isolation of his coreligionists because he feared a reverse movement: the transition of believers from the new rite to his coreligionists. The “Points” stipulated that only people from among schismatics could join the unified faith. This scheme was reminiscent of the policy of “uniatism” of the Roman Catholic Church among the Orthodox in Western Ukraine and Belarus. “Uniates” could build churches and serve according to the Eastern Orthodox rite, subject to recognition of the primacy of the Pope. Unity of faith was initially perceived by the hierarchs of the official church as a temporary phenomenon. Having lured the Old Believers into the general church administration, they wanted to gradually lead their fellow believers to the transition to the new rite.

Church of St. Michael's Settlement

Since the 17th century, the majority of the peasants of Mikhailovskaya Sloboda and the nearby villages of Chulkovo, Kulakovo, Durnikhi remained adherents of the old rite. In 1817, under Metropolitan Platon's successor Augustine, the church in Mikhailovskaya Sloboda acquired the status of a co-religionist church. The decree of 1817, an excerpt from which is cited by priest Evgeniy Sarancha in the book “A Brief Sketch of the History of Edinoveriya,” said: “In the Bronnitsy district in the Church of the Archangel Michael, in Mikhailovskaya Sloboda, we bless all Divine services to be carried out according to old printed books, as well as religious services in houses , hoping that through this those who are separated from the unity of the Church of Christ will be united with it.” Since then, for two hundred years, services have been held in the church of Mikhailovskaya Sloboda according to the old rite. The exception was the period of 28 years from 1961 to 1989, when the church was closed and converted into an archive.

In the 1990s, the center of Edinoverie moved to Mikhailovskaya Sloboda from the Rogozhskoye cemetery in Moscow. Back in the 19th century, Moscow Metropolitan Filaret created a community of the same faith at the Rogozhskoye cemetery. To achieve this, the authorities used pressure on Moscow merchants: they passed a law according to which Old Believers were deprived of their merchant status if they did not join the official church. In 1854, part of the Old Believers of Rogozhka, led by the merchant Vladimir Andreevich Sapelkin, asked the authorities to create a co-religion parish in one of the three churches of the cemetery. The St. Nicholas Church, in which the Old Believers served before them, was given to their fellow believers.

During the Soviet years, St. Nicholas Church on Rogozhsky was not closed, but was divided into three parts. In the central part, priests of the Moscow Patriarchate served according to the new rite; in the Pokrovsky side chapel, Old Believers of the Old Orthodox Church prayed behind the wall, and in the third chapel of the Three-Handed Icon, fellow believers remained. Since the 1990s, the St. Nicholas Church at the Rogozhskoe cemetery has become completely new rite. The Old Orthodox Church from the Pokrovsky chapel was allocated a large temple on Novokuznetskaya Street in Moscow, and co-religionists from the Troeruchitsa chapel moved to Mikhailovskaya Sloboda.

Michael the Archangel Church (Mikhailovskaya Sloboda)

The church was founded under Tsar Fyodor Alekseevich in memory of the accession to the throne of the Tsar from the family of Romanov boyars, Mikhail Fedorovich. A stone one was later built on the site of the former wooden church. At the request of local residents, services in the temple were always performed according to ancient Russian old printed books. In 1817, the temple officially received the status of Edinoverie, and in 1830 it was completely rebuilt. The temple was closed in 1961 and returned to believers in 1989, when parishioners of the St. Nicholas Edinoverie Church of Rogozhskaya Sloboda moved to the parish. The community actively publishes church literature, the periodical “Truth of Orthodoxy”. There is a Sunday school and a lecture hall for adults.

In the middle of the 19th century, with the blessing of Metropolitan Philaret Drozdov, the “Jerusalem” icon of the Mother of God was painted for the temple, which later became famous for its miracles. The icon has been preserved and is one of the most revered. The church also contains an icon of St. Anna of Kashin, consecrated in the presence of the Venerable Martyr Elizaveta Feodorovna on the relics of the saint on the day of her glorification in 1909.
