Groundbreaking of the Transfiguration Cathedral

took place on August 27, 1889. The church was built over four years at the expense of the manufacturer M.N. Garelin and was solemnly consecrated on August 24, 1893.

History[edit]

The foundation stone of the temple took place on August 27, 1889. The church was built over four years at the expense of the manufacturer M.N. Garelin and was solemnly consecrated on August 24, 1893.

The church project was developed by the famous Moscow architect Alexander Stepanovich Kaminsky. The facades of the main volume of the temple are completed with kokoshniks, and the corners with tent-roofed turrets. The temple is crowned with an octagon with five chapters on high faceted drums. Lush platbands and cornices, two-tiered kokoshniks and other architectural details give the building an elegant appearance. On the western side of the temple there is a high tented bell tower, where 12 bells were originally located. Three entrances to the temple are highlighted by hipped porches.

Many details of the church's decoration were borrowed from the architecture of the late 17th century. Not far from the main entrance to the temple, a two-story brick clergy house was built. In the central part of the temple, a three-tier iconostasis was installed, and in the chapels of the Venerable Martyr Nikon and the Iveron Icon of the Mother of God - two-tier iconostases, made according to the drawings of Alexander Stepanovich Kaminsky. The icons for them were painted by the Moscow artist Ya.I. Ruchkin. In addition, several ancient, richly decorated icons were transferred from the Garelins’ home chapel to the temple. The wall painting in the temple was done by the artist I.V. Belousov. Subsequently, M.N. Garelin and his wife were buried in the church courtyard opposite the altar.

Initially, the Transfiguration Church was designed for 700 people - residents of the village of Rylikha, which existed on the outskirts of Ivanovo since the beginning of the 17th century. After the construction of the temple, it began to be called the village of Preobrazhensky and became part of the city after the February Revolution of 1917.

Since 1931, the temple was used simultaneously by two Orthodox communities - traditional and renovationist movements, which moved to the Transfiguration Church from the closed Intercession Cathedral, and then from the Assumption Cemetery Church. This use of the temple led to constant conflicts.

By decision of the regional executive committee on May 19, 1940, the church was closed and the interior decoration was destroyed. Two years later, believers applied for registration of the Orthodox community, and on November 17, 1944, services resumed in the church.

After the creation of the Ivanovo-Shuiskaya, then the Ivanovo-Kineshma diocese, the Transfiguration Church became a cathedral.

Interior decoration and shrines of the White Church in Ivanovo

The inside of the religious building is light and spacious. A three-tiered gilded iconostasis, created in the Baroque style, stretches from the northern to the southern wall. Interesting fact: the altar partition once belonged to Suvorov. It was also delivered here in 1956 from the village of Sarajevo, Furmansky district.

Unfortunately, the original iconostases in the chapels of the martyr Nikon and the Mother of God, made according to the sketches of the architect Kaminsky, have not been preserved. The same fate befell the ancient icons from the Garelin house. In 1940, during the closure of the cathedral, all the interior decoration was destroyed.

Restoration work began after the end of the Great Patriotic War. In 1986, the wall painting created at the beginning of the last century by the artist Belousov was updated. Among the shades, white, blue, greenish and red-brown colors predominate, characteristic of the interiors of the temple of the 19th and early 20th centuries.

The main aisle of the cathedral is consecrated in honor of the Transfiguration of the Lord, the side aisles - St. Nicholas the Wonderworker and the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God. Accordingly, patronal feasts are celebrated in memory of St. Nicholas on May 9/22 and December 6/19, the icon of the Mother of God on July 8/21, October 22/November 4, and the Transfiguration of the Lord on August 6/19.

Among the shrines presented here are particles of the relics of St. Basil, the icon of the “Inexhaustible Chalice”, particles of the relics and the icon of St. Leontius, an image of St. Macarius and his relics, an icon with particles of the relics of Blessed Simon.

Description[edit]

Iconostasis
The temple was built in the Russian style of the late 19th century, in imitation of the architecture of the 17th century. The facades of the main volume are completed with kokoshniks, and the corners with hipped towers.

Activities of the parish[edit]

At the temple there are:

  • Sunday school for children
  • Sunday School for Adults
  • Temperance Society
  • Pilgrimage Service
  • Social service

Architecture of the Church of the Transfiguration in Ivanovo

If you look at the temple complex, you will see that it is designed in white and blue. For this reason, local residents nicknamed the religious building the White Church. However, color is not the only thing that makes the cathedral remarkable.

Numerous decorative elements are also of interest, giving the building a festive look. These include, for example, keel-shaped and semicircular kokoshniks that decorate the facades of the complex. They are kept company by lush and defined cornices, platbands, and an openwork metal lattice that encloses the territory of the church.

The bell tower, whose roof is crowned with tents instead of domes, also attracts attention. There used to be 12 bells inside the room. The tent theme is continued by the three entrances to the church. One of them, the one on the western side, is distinguished by a high arch and a small dome. However, the temple building itself is devoid of tents; instead, there are five domes on faceted drums. According to the type of architectural composition, the building is an octagon.

All these details indicate that the building belongs to the “Russian” architectural style, which became widespread at the end of the 19th century. It is known that supporters of this movement adopted the features of ancient Russian architecture of the 17th century.

Standing out from the overall composition are the two-story brick parish house, the gatehouse, and the buildings on the south side of the complex. Built in the same period as the cathedral.

In addition, pilgrimage trips to Orthodox holy places in Russia are constantly organized for members of the parish community.

From 1940 to 1944 the cathedral was closed and the interior was destroyed

In the early 30s of the 20th century, as a result of another wave of mass closures and destruction of churches, the temple began to be used simultaneously by two parish communities - traditional and renovationist. This led to numerous conflicts.

To prevent the situation from worsening, on May 19, 1940, by decision of the regional executive committee, the temple was closed, and the interior decoration was soon destroyed.

After the closure of the Transfiguration Church in Ivanovo, not a single functioning church remained.

In 1942, believers turned to the authorities with requests to register the Orthodox community, and two years later, on November 17, 1944, the Council for the Affairs of the Russian Orthodox Church gave permission to open the Transfiguration Church.

However, due to the extremely neglected state of the building, church services did not resume immediately.

Restoration work began to be carried out in the temple in the post-war years. Gradually, the paintings on its walls were recreated, and the necessary liturgical utensils were acquired.

A gilded three-tier iconostasis in the Baroque style was transported from the village of Sarajevo, Furmanovsky district. It is believed that it was made by order of the famous Russian commander Alexander Vasilyevich Suvorov.

The architectural features of the temple amaze with their splendor and beauty

The cathedral is built in the shape of a square quadrangle, which is completed by an octagon with five onion domes on high faceted drums.

The facades of the building are completed with elegant triple kokoshniks, and slender tented turrets rise at the corners. The light and outwardly airy temple is painted snow-white.

The temple is crowned with an octagon with five chapters

The central drum, made in the shape of a cylinder, is slightly higher in height than the side drums, which have a faceted shape.

Adjacent to the cathedral from the west is a slender three-tiered hipped bell tower, which originally housed twelve bells. The lower tier of the building is a standard quadrangle, and the upper two are octagonal.

The bell tower is crowned with a small elegant golden “onion” dome. The abundance of “rumor” windows gives the bell tower an even more openwork appearance.

The three entrances to the temple are decorated with hipped porches. The elegant design of the brick gates harmonizes well with the overall decor of the cathedral.

A two-story brick church clergy house was built right there, not far from the temple, which has survived to this day. The entire territory is fenced around the entire perimeter.

Currently, here you can see wall paintings that are striking in their magnificence, which were completed in the first half of the 20th century and updated in 1986.

Today, the Transfiguration Cathedral remains one of the most beautiful churches in the city of Ivanovo
