Gate Odigitrievskaya Church in the city of Smolensk
was heavily damaged by the enemy during the War of 1812 and was restored in 1814 according to the design of the architect M. N. Slepnev. In the second half of the 19th century, the iconostasis was painted by master Leontyev.
History and description[edit]
Gate Church 1910s
A stone Frolovskaya tower with a gate stood on the site of the temple from the end of the 16th century. On it, in a niche since 1602, after the construction of the fortress was completed, there was an image of the Mother of God “Hodegetria”, sent to Smolensk by Tsar Boris Fedorovich Godunov. At the beginning of the 18th century, the tower, which had fallen into disrepair, was dismantled. In 1727, a wooden church in honor of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary was erected above the gates of the fortress wall and in 1728 consecrated by Bishop Gideon (Vishnevsky). The miraculous icon of the Mother of God was transferred into it. Under Bishop Parthenia (Sopkovsky) in 1793, a stone one was built on the site of a wooden church. In 1800 it was consecrated. Bishop Seraphim (Glagolevsky) blessed its reconstruction in 1811. Two altars were built in the temple: the southern one - in the name of the Most Merciful Savior, the northern one in honor of the Smolensk Icon of the Mother of God.
The Smolensk miraculous icon was in the active army from August 6 to November 5, 1812. The Russian army, led by Commander-in-Chief M.I. Kutuzov, prayed to this icon at a prayer service on the eve of the Battle of Borodino. During the occupation of Smolensk by French troops, the building housed a bread store. The temple was damaged by the enemy and restored in 1814 according to the design of the architect M. N. Slepnev. In the second half of the 19th century, the iconostasis was painted by master Leontyev. In 1909, the Smolensk public Orthodox library and reading room was opened at the temple. During the Soviet period, the temple was used for several decades as a cultural institution.
After the revolution, in the 30s of the 20th century, there was a workers’ club in the building of the gate church of Hodegetria. During the Great Patriotic War, the upper tier of the gate was destroyed; after the war it was restored, however, passage through the gate was closed (since the bridge leading to it was destroyed), and the level of Sobolev Street was raised above the base of the gate.
In the post-war years, the building of the former Dnieper Gate housed: a cultural and educational school, a regional philharmonic society and a regional puppet theater.
Description[edit]
The spiritual children of Schema-nun Makaria faced the question of building a church-chapel in which the Liturgy could be celebrated. The choice was made on the wooden architecture of the Russian North. The basis of wooden churches of the “dumpling” type is the same principle as that of a peasant hut, a log house - a “cage”. The church was erected on an elevated place or raised above the ground on a high “basement”. The roof, compared to a residential building, was made steeper and higher. And to make it more elegant and intricate, they “broke” the steep roof and completed it with sloping slopes. We decided that this should be the church in the village of Tyomkino.
Back in 1999, having received the blessing of Archpriest Mikhail (Trukhanov), we began collecting funds for construction. The famous Moscow monumental artist A.V. Artemyev made a preliminary sketch, providing the temple with a chopped altar apse. Subsequently, he created the design of the iconostasis.
Current state[edit]
In 1992, the primary classes of the Orthodox gymnasium were located within the walls of the Odigitrievsky Church. In the gymnasium, a temple was built in honor of the Smolensk Icon of the Mother of God “Hodegetria”, consecrated by Metropolitan Kirill of Smolensk and Kaliningrad, now His Holiness the Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus'. In May 1993, Patriarch Alexy II visited the gymnasium.
The gate icon of the Mother of God Hodegetria, which once adorned the Dnieper Gate of the Smolensk Fortress, is now kept in the Assumption Cathedral.
In July 2021, large-scale restoration of the temple building began; restoration work is planned to take 2 years. One of the reasons for the start of the restoration was the appearance of a crack that pierced the wall of the building all the way to the roof. It arose due to the subsidence of the building. In addition to work to strengthen the foundation and replace the roof, many parts of the facade will be returned to their original appearance.
Alexander Dubrovsky, ancient guardian of the Smolensk diocese: “The drum will be recreated in the form in which it was originally. There will be sculptures of the four evangelists on the drum itself - between the columns they will be restored. It is planned to recreate the painting on the pediments.”
According to the original plan of the architect Mikhail Slepnev, the two bell towers of the Odigitrievskaya Church were erected directly on the pillars of the fortress wall. And during the restoration, these bell towers will also be restored.
