Icon of the Mother of God “Deliverance from the troubles of the afflicted”
[1] Celebration (local) on the Sunday of All Saints

In the book “Tales of the Earthly Life of the Blessed Virgin Mary” it is supposedly identified with the icon of the Mother of God “Seeking the Lost,” or more precisely, with the Bor list of the latter. However, the iconography of these editions is noticeably different. Thus, in the icon “Deliverance from the Troubles of the Suffering,” the Mother of God faces to the right, is usually depicted wearing a crown; the folding of Her hands and the pose of the Infant of God are also different.

The iconographic excerpt “Deliverance from the troubles of the afflicted” was established in the Russian Orthodox Church no later than the second half of the 18th century. Thus, in 1772, it is found within a complex iconographic plot written by the Yaroslavl icon painter Andrei Denisov [2].

In recent years, the miraculously updated list of icons in the Arzamas St. Nicholas Monastery has become most famous. In 1997, a light spot appeared on the completely blackened icon, highlighting a small oval part of the icon measuring 10-15 cm. Since that time, the icon was gradually cleaned without the participation of human hands - the cleared surface began to grow especially quickly in the middle of the summer of 2000. In the summer of 2001, based on its already significantly cleared details, it was possible to reliably determine the iconography of the image [3].

A special akathist has been compiled for a prayerful address to the icon.

The icon was brought to the monastery by two women in 1997; its origin is unknown.

The Icon of the Mother of God “Deliverer from the troubles of the afflicted” appeared under unusual circumstances. In 1997, one woman living in Arzamas (Nizhny Novgorod region) was sorting through things in a barn and came across an unusual board there.

In shape and size, this object resembled an icon, although it was difficult to reliably know what it was due to dust and dirt. But still, the woman chose to trust her intuition and, taking a companion with her, took the find to the local St. Nicholas Monastery.

Because of the black layer, it was impossible to make out what was depicted on the icon.

The nuns agreed that an ancient icon was kept in the woman’s barn, but they could not identify what exactly was depicted on it.

Only a faint colored silhouette was visible under a layer of black plaque. It could equally have belonged to either an Orthodox saint or an Eastern deity - it was difficult to say, so they accepted the gift, but hid it in a storage room.

Icon “Deliverer from Troubles”: revered lists

List from the Epiphany Cathedral

In the Moscow Epiphany Cathedral, in the chapel of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, the icon of the Mother of God “Deliverance from the Troubles of the Suffering” is kept. Presumably it was written in the 16th century. It was probably moved from the Moscow Church of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary on Fili, which was closed in 1941.

The Most Holy Theotokos is depicted waist-deep, holding the Divine Infant with her left hand, and holding His feet with her right hand. Baby Jesus blesses those praying with his right hand. In His left hand He has a rolled up scroll (a symbol of the good news brought to the world). Every week, before this image, an akathist (singing of praise and thanksgiving) is read. The celebration of this icon of the Most Holy Theotokos takes place on February 5 according to the new style.

Lyudinovo list

In the Kazan Cathedral in the city of Lyudinovo (Kaluga region) there is another revered copy of the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos “Deliverance from the troubles of the afflicted.” The copy was written by order of the family of the owner of iron and copper smelters in the Urals N.N. Demidova. This supposedly happened in the middle of the 18th century, the icon was painted for the wooden temple of the Prophet Elijah that was under construction. The picturesque feature of this image is that the Infant God rests with his right hand on the shoulder of His Mother; there is no scroll in his left hand.

At the beginning of the 19th century, the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos “Deliverance from the Troubles of the Suffering” was transferred to the stone Kazan Cathedral. After 1930, when the cathedral was closed, the icon of the Mother of God was in the house of parishioner P.S. Finaeva P.S. (1870-1943). In 1987, the icon was inherited into the family of O.V. Chernousova O.V. In 1993 it was transferred to the Sergius Church.

After the restoration of the Kazan Cathedral, the miraculous image was solemnly moved in a religious procession on February 9, 2000. Since that time, a record has been kept of the gracious help from the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos “Deliverance from the troubles of the afflicted.” This image is the only one that survived the years of Soviet power, which makes it all the more dear to the residents of Lyudinovo.

On August 8, 2004, an attempt was made to steal an ancient icon along with jewelry donated by parishioners. However, during the commission of the crime, the thief was prevented and he was able to take only three rings. Two of them were later found.

The day of local honoring of the Lyudinovo Icon of the Mother of God is February 9.

Arzamas list

In the Church of the Epiphany of the Arzamas Convent there is a particularly revered icon “Deliverance from the troubles of the afflicted.” This image was painted at the beginning of the 19th century.

Its peculiarity is that the head of the Divine Infant touches the cheek of the Mother of God. His right hand touches Her neck, but there is no scroll in His left hand. The icon was donated to the monastery in 1997 by a resident of the city of Arzamas (Nizhny Novgorod region). Moreover, the image was darkened to such an extent that it was impossible to distinguish anything. A complete renovation of the icon took place by mid-2001. The writing of a special akathist by the sisters of the monastery dates back to this time.

The day of remembrance of the Arzamas Icon “Deliverance from the Troubles of the Suffering” falls on All Saints’ Week (a week after the celebration of the Holy Trinity).

After the nuns’ prayers, the black layer began to disappear, and the image began to appear

After a while, Mother George, the abbess of the monastery, was cleaning out the storeroom and discovered this icon. Some inner instinct prompted her to take the image with her and hang it up for prayer.

And then the incredible happened. Gradually, day after day, someone invisible seemed to be removing all this blackness that covered the icon. Familiar outlines began to appear more and more clearly - the Queen of Heaven was undoubtedly looking at the praying nuns.

This is how the miraculous icon looks today

In mid-2000, the image became clear enough, but the inscription on it remained unreadable.

However, a nun from Riga who visited the monastery recognized the icon “Deliverance from the troubles of the afflicted.” It was also possible to find out that there was practically no paint left on the icon. It peeled off over time, and the image seemed to appear on the wooden board itself.

Pilgrims from all over Russia began to come to the miraculous icon

Gradually, local residents learned about the wonderful icon, and then in other regions of the country.

Pilgrims began to come to the monastery to address their prayers and requests to the Queen of Heaven.

3 thousand

approximately the same number of believers come annually to venerate the icon

And miracles happened! The Virgin Mary answered prayers and helped people who asked for help.

She truly became a deliverer from troubles. Those who cannot come and pray themselves send letters. There are about three thousand of them every year.

The miracles that the icon performs are recorded by the nuns in a special notebook: who was cured of illness, who was saved from trouble.

Divine services are held regularly in the monastery - an akathist is read before the icon.

Today the icon can still be seen in the same St. Nicholas Monastery.

Icon “Deliverer from Troubles”: what it helps with (what needs to pray for)

The Most Holy Theotokos, the Merciful Intercessor and Intercessor for all Christians before the Lord, is always ready to hear the prayers offered to Her from the pure hearts of believers who trust in Her gracious help.

“The Mother of God, when we have a need, immediately answers our prayer; and when not, he leaves it so that perseverance and courage are slowly developed in us” (Holy Venerable Paisius the Svyatogorets, 1924-1994).

There are no special icons of the Mother of God; She is the same in all icons. They (the icons) differ from each other only in their pictorial features.

According to popular belief, the image of the Most Holy Theotokos “Deliverer from Troubles” helps believers in various troubles and misfortunes.

“Our sins and needs are great, but the prayers of the Mother of God are stronger than all needs and bitterness” (Righteous Saint Alexy Mechev, 1859-1923).

The Arzamas icon is not the only “Deliverer”

The Arzamas icon “Deliverer from the troubles of the afflicted” is not the only one, not the first, and not even the only one that works miracles.

“Deliverer” is a popular icon painting type, its original name is Hodegetria. In it, the Queen of Heaven holds the baby Jesus with her left hand, but he bears little resemblance to an ordinary child.

In figure and face, he rather resembles a young man, only greatly reduced in size.

You can see a scroll in the Savior’s left hand, and with his right hand he touches the robe of the Virgin Mary.

“Deliverer of Troubles” - belongs to the “Hodegetria” icon type.

The right hand of the Virgin Mary is free and makes a gesture towards her Son. So she calls people to follow the Savior.

Most often there is an icon on the head of the Queen of Heaven. Sometimes it is drawn as a ghostly silhouette, but almost always indicated. There are not many options without it.

One of the many “Deliverers” is kept in the New Athos Simon-Kananitsky Cathedral. It is also miraculous and known before 1889. According to legend, this list saved the Greeks from a locust invasion in 1840.

Who will deliver the believer from troubles

The icon “Deliverer from Troubles” is currently venerated in lists (copies). It is also known as “Deliverance from troubles”, “Deliverance from the troubles of the afflicted”, “Vow of the afflicted”. The time of appearance and location of the prototype is unknown. In Rus', such icons have become widespread since the 15th century. The very name of the miraculous image comes from the words of the canon (prayer singing) to the Most Holy Theotokos: “Mother of God, Lady, hasten and deliver us from troubles.” These words are based on the deep faith of Christians and their hope in the special help of the Mother of God.

Icon of the Most Holy Theotokos “Deliverer from Troubles”

As Saint Ignatius Brianchaninov (1801-1867) said:

“The Ever-Virgin is above all holy men, both for the reason that she became the Mother of the God-Man, and for the reason that She was the most constant, the most attentive hearer and executor of the teachings proclaimed by the God-Man.”

Prayer, troparion and kontakion to the icon of the Mother of God “Deliverance from the troubles of the afflicted”

Prayer

O Most Blessed Lady, Protector of the Christian race, refuge and salvation of those who resort to You! We know, truly we know how much we have sinned and been angry, O Merciful Lady, the Son of God born in the flesh of You.

But the Imam has many images before me of those who angered his mercy: publicans, harlots and other sinners, to whom forgiveness of their sins was given, for the sake of repentance and confession.

Thou, therefore, imagining the images of those who had mercy on the sinners of my soul, and looking at the great mercy of God that I received, I dared, even a sinner, to resort with repentance to Your mercy.

O All-Merciful Lady!

Give me a helping hand, and ask Your Son and God, through Your mother’s prayers and Your most holy prayers, for forgiveness for my grave sin.

I believe and confess that the One whom You gave birth to, Your Son is truly Christ, the Son of the Living God, Judge of the living and the dead, Reward each one according to his deeds: I believe again

and I confess to You to be the true Mother of God, the source of mercy, the consolation of those who mourn, the recovery of the lost, the strong

and the unceasing Intercessor to God, who dearly loves the Christian race and the helper of repentance: truly, for there is no other help and protection for us, except You,

Madam Most Merciful, and no one else, trusting in You, was ashamed when, and by You begging God, no one was quickly abandoned.

For this sake and I pray to Your innumerable goodness: open the doors of Your mercy to me who have gone astray.

and to the one who has fallen into the dark times of the depths, do not abhor me, the foul one, do not despise my sinful prayer, do not forsake me the accursed one, as an evil enemy seeks to snatch me away to destruction:

but pray for me to Your merciful Son and God, born of You, that He may forgive my great sins

and will deliver me from my destruction, as yes and I, with all those who have received forgiveness, will sing and glorify the immeasurable mercy of God

and Your unashamed intercession for me in this life and in the endless eternity. Amen.
