Abalak Icon of the Mother of God “The Sign”

Abalatskaya Icon of the Mother of God “The Sign”
(Abalatskaya, Abalatskaya-Znamenskaya), the most revered icon in Siberia Celebration November 27, July 20

The name comes from the Tatar village of Abalak, located 30 km from Tobolsk. The Legend of the Abalak Icon “The Sign” reports the appearance in 1636 of the widow Mary “in a light sleep” of two icons - the Mother of God “The Sign” and the Venerable Mary of Egypt and, “like a living being,” St. Nicholas. There was a voice from the icon of the Mother of God that commanded the construction of a church in the Abalatsk churchyard in honor of the icon “The Sign” with chapels in the name of the Venerable Mary of Egypt and St. Nicholas.

With the blessing of the Tobolsk Archbishop Nektary (Telyashin), the construction of the church began in 1636 and the icon of the Mother of God “The Sign”, Abalakskaya, was painted by the protodeacon of the Tobolsk Cathedral Matthew Martynov, commissioned by the peasant E. Koki, with whose recovery miracles of healing from the icon began.

The legend about the Abalak icon “The Sign”, including the story of the appearance of the icon and the miracles from it, was preserved in 2 editions and came down in no less than 10 copies of the 17th - early 19th centuries. The oldest edition was written in 1641 under the Tobolsk Archbishop Gerasim (Kremlin) based on the questioning speeches of the widow Mary, preserved in the original [1]. Its author was presumably Savva Esipov, clerk of the Tobolsk bishop's house and compiler of the Siberian Esipov Chronicle. The nature of the narration in this version of the Legend is close to documentary, although the language is largely close to the book. In the mid-40s. XVII century The legend was continued by the recording of miracles by the local priest Pavel Stefanov; under Archbishop Cornelius (1664–1677), a new edition of the monument was created - the text underwent stylistic changes and was supplemented with new miracles (the last dates back to 1675), recorded in the environment of the Tobolsk bishop. The Legend describes about 130 miracles; among those who received healing from the icon there were residents of Central Russia (Yaroslavl), which indicates the all-Russian fame of the Abalak Icon “The Sign” already in the 2nd half of the 17th century. Reports of miracles of healing from the Abalak icon “The Sign”, performed in the 19th century, were published in appendices to the edition of the Legend. The 2nd edition of the Legend was published in the 19th - early centuries. only in transcriptions.

Abalak Icon of the Mother of God “The Sign”

Its celebration takes place on the day of the Icon of the Mother of God “The Sign” - November 27.
Archbishop Cornelius, in memory of the cessation of rains through the prayer to the Abalak Icon “The Sign,” established in 1666 an annual religious procession from Abalak to Tobolsk, which coincided with the day of celebration (July 8) of the ancient Siberian shrine - the miraculous Kazan Icon (Tobolsk) in the cathedral. The icon remained in the city until July 20, which became the second day of celebration of the icon, which later stopped because it fell during the procession of the cross. The Abalak Icon of the Mother of God “The Sign” has not survived. It was a copy of the “Sign” icon of Novgorod, supplemented by images of St. Nicholas and St. Mary of Egypt. The icon was inserted into a wooden icon frame with picturesque images of the feasts of the Mother of God. The icon size is 27.0 by 22.5 cm, the frame size is 108 by 80 cm.

The service of the Abalak Icon “The Sign” was approved at a meeting of the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church on October 21, 2016 [2].

In the XVII–XIX centuries. Many copies were made from the Abalak Icon of the Sign in Siberia, which were revered as miraculous.

Abalak Icon “The Sign” Semipalatinsk

In 1712, a copy of the Abalak icon “The Sign” was brought to a warship sailing from Tobolsk up the Irtysh. After the prayer service, which was served on the ship in front of the icon, the ship sailed “by itself” against the flow of the river and stopped when it reached the city of Semipalatinsk. The icon was placed in the city's Znamensky Cathedral; it was especially revered by the military. After the revolution of 1917, the cathedral was captured by renovationists, and even then precious parts of its decoration were removed from the icon. After the explosion of the cathedral in 1919, there is no information about the icon.

History and miracles

History of the icon “The Sign” Abalatskaya (Abalakskaya): The first miracle from the ancient icon of the Mother of God “The Sign” Abalatskaya: was the complete recovery of the customer. The peasant Emfimy was sick. A holy fool came to him and advised him to take part in its writing; said that Emfimy would be healed from it. Already when he went to the famous icon painter Protodeacon Matthew of Tobolsk to place an order, he felt better. As the order was ready, Emfimy became stronger. His hand began to work. He carried it completely healthy to consecrate it (1837).

The ancient icon “The Sign,” painted in accordance with the instructions of the Mother of God, was richly decorated: a silver chasuble on a gold background, pearls and diamonds, and precious stones.

The miracles continued. The miracle worker was carried to the village of Abalak in a religious procession. On the way of the procession, a girl was healed of blindness from her, and she came out to meet her with her father leading her by the hand.

Later a monastery was built in the village (1783). In the newly built monastery, a list of witnesses to the widow’s interrogation was compiled. Then information about miracles was added. The list still exists.

Lesson

A misfortune happened in Tobolsk and its surrounding villages (1665): the crops perished due to incessant rains. At the request of the Tobolsk Archbishop, the miraculous image was brought to the church with all honors, and the liturgy was immediately served. Before it was over, the sun came out and the rain stopped. In this regard, the Archbishop established a custom: every year to bring her to Tobolsk for two weeks.

But upon returning from Moscow (1668), where he went to receive his appointment as Metropolitan, he was misled; he believed the slander that she was greeted inappropriately and allegedly committed outrages. Angry, he forbade anyone to travel for the Miraculous Icon “The Sign” of Abalatskaya (Abalakskaya). As a result, he became seriously ill. The next year, not understanding the lesson given to him, he again repeated his ban. I got sick again. As the time approached to go after the Miraculous, his condition worsened.

Finally, he understood the cause of his illness. Repenting with tears, he sent for her with a request after the liturgy to bring Her to his house, he was so weak. Seeing the face of the Most Holy Theotokos, I felt lightness in my body. After applying to the image with a prayer for forgiveness, the praying icon of the Mother of God of Abalak forgave him, he became completely healthy.

Original

The original has not survived; it disappeared during the Civil War.
