The only way out for believers is prayer. Often, even those who are well acquainted with church life do not know about the holy martyrs Adrian and Natalia or turn to more famous saints who help in matters of love - Peter and Fevronia. But the prayer to Adrian and Natalya has a powerful effect for those who have already found a husband or wife, but are still experiencing problems.
Prayers to the holy martyrs Adrian and Natalia
Biblical history contains many stories when Christians had to undergo martyrdom and suffering in the name of the tenets of their faith.
For many years, Christian communities throughout the Roman Empire were forced to hide from the authorities, preserving the Biblical commandments. The young couple, Natalia and Adrian, who lived at the beginning of the 4th century after Christ in Asia Minor, did not escape the sad fate. A year after the wedding, a sad fate befell them. Reading a prayer to the martyrs Adrian and Natalia, we should all remember the story of their strong love and death in the name of faith.
Life of Natalia and Adrian
Natalia was a secret Christian, and her husband, Adrian, was a pagan, and he served as an official under the Emperor Maximian himself. One day, Roman soldiers discovered a cave where 23 Christians were hiding. They were tortured and tortured for a long time, trying to force them to renounce the Christian faith and return to paganism. Their names were written down by the 28-year-old head of the ward, Adrian, who was amazed at the perseverance and devotion to his faith of the prisoners.
Having asked them what they expected from God for such inhuman suffering, he heard an answer that radically changed his views: “Eye has not seen, ear has not heard, and what God has prepared for those who love Him has not entered the heart of man.” .
Struck to the heart by the steadfastness of the martyrs and their devotion to the Christian God, Adrian decided to share their fate and declared himself a Christian. Having accepted inhuman torment with those being tortured, having believed in God, he was executed in the city square. His wife, Natalia, supported him until his last breath, strengthened him in his faith, hoping that he would not renounce his chosen faith. While the executioners were burning the bodies of those executed, a thunderstorm suddenly came, extinguishing the flame of the furnace, and some guards were killed by lightning. Natalia died at the grave of her beloved husband some time later.
The couple were canonized as saints, because Adrian suffered for his faith, and his wife - for her compassion for her husband and determination in the path they chose.
After Andrian decided to die for Christ, he was sent to prison
But the very minute after he said this, shackles were placed on him. After which he was sent to prison. When his wife found out about this, she thought that it was due to some kind of crime. But she was told that this happened because he professed faith in Christ.
She dressed in her festive clothes and went to her husband in prison. Then she praised Andrian, telling him to be firm in his faith, and so that no one could shake him. She also asked other martyrs to pray for him, after which she returned to her home.
When Andrian learned that he had been sentenced to death, he asked to go to his home and tell his wife about it. When Natalya saw him safe and sound, she decided that he was free, but at the same hour she thought that Andrian had abandoned Christ. She closed the door in his face and prevented him from going inside.
When Natalia learned that her husband had decided to die along with other martyrs, she actively supported him
She told her husband:
“Whoever denies Me before men, him will I also deny before My Father who is in heaven.”
(Matthew 10:33)
But Andrian said why he decided to come. Natalia opened the doors for him and rushed to hug him. She decided to accompany him on the way to the treasury.

Prayer is a conversation with the Lord and the Saints. In order for the Heavenly patrons to hear your prayer request and save you from troubles, you need to pray correctly:
- Choose a secluded place for prayer.
- Place an icon on a shelf or bedside table, and a lit lamp next to it.
- Offer prayers while standing, facing the icon. Pregnant women are allowed to sit during the prayer service.
- Before reading a spiritual text, try to get rid of extraneous thoughts. To make this easier, you can mentally imagine the image of the Savior and your presence before Him.
- It is advisable to learn the prayer by heart, but at first it is permissible to read it from what is written.
- Pronounce the sacred words slowly, calmly, pondering their meaning.
- Before the beginning and at the end of the prayer service, bow and make the sign of the cross.
Priests advise praying at the same time. It is better to do this in the morning or evening, before bed.
You cannot ask for the love of a married man or marriage with a certain person, as this may be against his wishes. The Lord honors personal freedom by giving a person the right to choose.
You should not expect immediate fulfillment of your desire. Sometimes the Lord tests believers. Patience and strong faith will definitely be rewarded.

Symbol of faith
The Creed is a statement of faith of an Orthodox person, his agreement with all the events that occurred more than 2000 years ago.
This prayer should especially be read in moments of despair, in moments of doubt, since by its affirmation it destroys these doubts. If there is doubt in even one line of the prayer, then something is wrong with faith. “I believe, Lord! Help my unbelief!
Christians set out their confession of faith in the Creed.
The Creed is a prayer book that contains all the basic provisions and dogmas of the Orthodox Church. This doctrine is stated in the Creed in a brief but very precise form. It was compiled in the 4th century by the fathers of the First and Second Ecumenical Councils.

It is universal, and is suitable both for everyday reading (during morning prayers) and for special occasions, for example on the day of baptism of children (boys or girls). The creed is not a prayer (but a confession of faith). For it does not contain appeals to God, the Most Holy Theotokos, Angels or saints.

Icon of Saint Natalia
Natalya, which means “native” in Latin, is one of the most popular Russian names in Russia and in the world. For every girl, girl, woman bearing this name, the icon “Natalia” will become a guardian, protector and an amazing example of fidelity to her faith and her husband. Such an icon for newborn Natalya would be a wonderful gift. Why, after so many centuries, does this holy martyr continue to attract us?
Memorial Day of the Great Martyrs Adrian and Natalia August 26 (September 8).
The feat of Saint Natalia
Saint Natalia was not tortured, she was not executed, but her bloodless martyrdom makes one feel real admiration for this amazing woman. Her feat dates back to the time of Emperor Galerius (293-311). There were not many years left before the edict of Emperor Constantine the Great on religious tolerance, but under Galerius the persecution of Christians continued.
Arriving in Nicomedia, he demanded that Christians make sacrifices to the pagan gods, otherwise they would be doomed to death. Sacred books and Christian churches were burned, so it is not surprising that many Christians hid their religion. Natalia, the wife of a high-ranking Roman official Hadrian, did the same, without even opening up to her husband.
Adrian was amazed at the torment Christians were willing to go to for the sake of their Savior. He talked with them a lot and in the end he himself believed. Adrian did not hide his conversion, and was immediately thrown into prison. So from a high-ranking official, he instantly turned into a Christian doomed to torment.
When Natalya learned about her husband’s conversion to the True Faith, her soul was filled with jubilation. She immediately came to the dungeon and told Adrian that they were now of the same faith. After the torture, her husband was in terrible condition, with broken legs, and Natalya stayed to look after him. She also helped other fellow believers who endured inhuman torture, but remained steadfast in the faith, washing their wounds, bringing them food and praying with them.
It is difficult to imagine the mental state of this woman, who endured incredible pain, not just physical, but mental. When her husband's torment ended in execution, Natalya was very afraid that she might be forced to marry again, because she was not only young and beautiful, but also very rich.
There are two versions about how Saint Natalia died. According to one, she died at her husband's grave three days after the execution; according to another, she fled to Byzantium, where she soon died. Often these Nicomedia martyrs are depicted together in the icon of Hadrian and Natalia, and their joint celebration is established on the same day.
Description of the icon
When you look at the Orthodox icon “St. Natalia,” it amazes you with the tragic and, at the same time, unyielding gaze of the great martyr. She is usually depicted in a dark red robe, with a cross in her right hand and a scroll with a prayer in her left. Sometimes she holds a scarf in her left hand, symbolizing her devoted care for her husband.
The meaning of the icon of Saint Natalia
The meaning of the icon of the Great Martyr Natalia lies in the fact that it serves as an eternal reminder of fidelity - fidelity to one’s faith and one’s spouse. She was with him “in sorrow and in joy,” but even death could not separate them, because they were supported by faith in the One God, and only thanks to this faith was the great martyr able to endure mental torture when her husband endured physical torture.
The icon of Saint Natalia reminds us that marriage is not only a common bed and a common household, but also the deepest unity in faith, in thoughts and actions, supporting each other in the most hopeless situations.
What does the icon of St. Natalia help with?
Saint Natalia set an example of selfless marital devotion and devotion to the True Faith, therefore prayers are addressed to her for strength in faith, for perseverance in the face of unfair accusations. She helps young couples not only create a strong union, but also maintain mutual love, understanding and fidelity in family life. If there are obstacles on the path to career growth, prayer to Saint Natalia can also help.

Answers to popular questions
Previously, all Christians from early childhood learned texts from the prayer book, church rules, and went to church services. Religion was the essence of the Orthodox community, no one had any questions about what could be done and what was prohibited. After all, everyone knew God’s commandments, and if they violated them, they understood that they were deprived of God’s grace.
Read from your phone, tablet or other electronic device
You need to know the prayer by heart. It is forbidden to enter any temple with your phone turned on. You can find the text you are interested in on the Internet, but it is advisable to print it out and then learn it by heart.
According to a piece of paper
All important and daily read prayer texts are printed in the Orthodox prayer book. This book can be bought in the church shop near the temple. At home or in church you can read the text from the prayer book.
In transport
If a person is overwhelmed by painful thoughts, prayer will come to the rescue. The sacred text can be read anywhere. In a public place, prayers are read mentally, that is, to oneself. It is advisable to know them by heart so that you can ask the Almighty for help at any time.
Woman during menstruation
According to the rules of the Old Testament, on critical days a woman has no right to enter the temple or even pray at home. Today everything is different. Women during their periods are allowed to go to church, but they are prohibited from kissing icons and receiving communion. It is advisable to stay at home on such days and pray to the image of the Savior.
Whisper or mentally
It is advisable to say the words of the prayer out loud. This practice will help you not to be distracted from the sacred text by extraneous thoughts. Prayers are said in a whisper. If a person is in a public place and knows the text well, he can pray mentally.

Jesus Prayer for the Laity
The Apostle Paul commanded Christians to pray constantly. True, it will not be possible to read texts every minute, because people are busy with their daily worries and works. Throughout the day, it is advisable to mentally turn to the Almighty with the words: “Lord, have mercy.” Such a request will help establish communication with the Savior and protect you from all sorts of troubles.
To an unbaptized person
If a person is not baptized in the Church, he has the right to pray at home, but God may not hear his requests. In order to become a member of the Christian community, they must undergo the sacrament of Baptism. A baptized person will be able to receive communion and pray to the Almighty for forgiveness of sins.
We advise you to study the Smolensk Icon of the Mother of God
Without a candle
At home, before praying, you can light a candle and place it near the icon. In all churches, candles must be lit during services. At home, it is advisable to light a candle every time before prayer.
By agreement
If a person is very ill or finds himself in a difficult situation, joint prayers said by his friends and relatives will help him. Believers ask for another Christian by reading the texts of psalms and prayers at a predetermined time. By agreement, several believers say a prayer at least 4 times a day until the Lord grants their request and grants mercy.

Ikos 2
The mind of true knowledge of God suddenly embraced your soul, Adrian, when, at the command of the Tsarev, you wrote down with other notaries the names of the holy martyrs who were known to suffer and die for the name of Christ, when you asked the servants of the Lord what reward they would receive from the Lord in His Kingdom For all the torment, you answered that it is impossible for a mortal tongue to utter and a weak mind to comprehend what God has prepared for those who love Him. But you, having abandoned all idolatry of evil, you rushed to Christ with all your heart and cried out boldly: “And I am a Christian!” In honor of your appeal to the true Sun of Truth, we pray that you, together with your wife, Saint Natalia, receive from us, sinners, the praise of the titan: Rejoice, holy servant of the true God; Rejoice, doer of the will of zeal. Rejoice, for all the red and sweet things of this world were despised by nature for the sake of Christ; Rejoice, for you have offered earthly love and marital happiness as a sacrifice to your Lover. Rejoice, you who teach us not to cleave to earthly goods, but to ascend in spirit to God; Rejoice, you who enlighten our weakness and ascend the ladder of the shrine who help us. Rejoice, Saints Adrian and Natalia, all-validated martyrs of Christ and invincible sufferers!

The icon of the holy martyr Natalia should be in the home of every woman who bears her name. The saint is considered the patroness of family well-being, so her image will serve as an excellent amulet, as well as protect from various sorrows and troubles.
Life of Saint Natalia
Natasha, the patroness of all, lived long before our time, when the Christian faith was completely infringed upon. She married the rich Adrian, who worked as a bailiff in court. But the girl never boasted of her civil status. On the contrary, she often helped and supported the poor and suffering, for which she was very respected and loved.
This woman became a Christian before her husband and preached the faith and was engaged in good deeds. When adherents of Christianity began to be detained en masse, her husband ended up in prison. Natalia constantly came to him, communicated with other prisoners and assured everyone to believe in the existence of another heavenly life. In order to be able to see her husband, she cut her hair short and dressed like a man in order to have access to the dungeon.
After some time, all the detainees were severely beaten and executed. The woman watched the death of her husband and was with him to the end. After the execution, she secretly took her husband's severed hand and soon took it to Byzantium, where the remains of the executed men were buried. After this, she herself gave up her soul to the Lord, uniting forever with her beloved.
She was canonized, and today this great martyr is remembered annually on September 8.
Answers to popular questions
“I don’t know how to pray at all and have never tried.” What to do?
You don't have to “know how” to pray. It is enough to believe in the Lord God and in the power of prayer, and also to act in accordance with all the specified rules. If you are afraid, then you can go to church and ask the Priest to help you. For the first time, you can also pray together with someone from your family and friends.
—What is the most effective prayer for illness?
All prayers for illnesses have a strong effect. They are approved by the church and have unique healing properties. You can choose any prayer. The main thing is to follow all the rules when reading it.
— Which prayer to choose for illness?
Choose the prayer that will be clear to you and close to your soul and feelings. Remember that all prayers have equal power.
- Why ask God for something? Doesn't he himself see that I need help?
Of course, the Lord sees everything and knows who has what problems. But reading a prayer is a kind of dialogue with God. We ask the Almighty for help directly, of good will and with the brightest intentions. It will never be superfluous.
— Is it necessary to pray to God alone? There are other Saints, after all. How to contact them?
No, it is not necessary to read to the Almighty alone. You can also turn to the Most Holy Theotokos, the great disciple Panteleimon, Saint Spyridon or other Saints. There are prayers addressed to them. But at least once a day it is recommended to turn to God.
—What is real prayer?
In sincerity, honesty and loyalty. In addressing the Almighty from a pure heart.
— I can’t say prayers every day. I don't have time for this. What should I do?
Of course, no one and nothing will force you to pray if you don’t want it yourself. Start small and devote 5-10 minutes a day to the prayer ritual. Every day you can gradually extend the time by a few minutes. Use this time as rest. Pray when you get home from work or before you go to bed. It is believed that a person should naturally have a desire to communicate with the Almighty. But if you don’t make an effort, your body will not be healthy and full of strength - remember this.
Icon of the Holy Martyr Natalia, meaning
The miraculous icon depicts the Great Martyr Natalya, who suffered great mental suffering. She always wears the martyr's white coat. The clothes on the great martyr are always red, as a sign of great faith and suffering brought in her name.
A rare feature of the icon of Saint Natalia is her full-length image.
In many Orthodox churches there is an icon of “St. Natalia”, the significance of which is great for married couples. This woman experienced great suffering as she watched her husband suffer. She was with him all the time, both spiritually and physically. She did not leave her husband until his soul left his lifeless body.
What do they pray for to the icon of Saint Natalia:
- for a happy marriage;
- for well-being and a quiet family hearth;
- for spouses who are in prison or under judicial arrest.
Saint Natalia: exploits and glorification
Nicomedia (modern name – Izmit) is one of the oldest settlements in Asia Minor. Thanks to its favorable location - on the shores of the Sea of Marmara, near Constantinople - the city flourished, attracting merchants, scientists and artists. In 74 BC. e. it became the center of the province of Bithynia, and in 286 - the eastern capital of the Roman Empire. Just there, in a family of virtuous Christians, at the end of the 3rd century. and the future holy martyr Natalya was born. The girl’s name, derived from the Latin word “natalis” (“native, blessed”), seemed to anticipate her amazing fate.
The girl could not openly profess her faith , because Galerius Maximian (250-311), who ruled at that time, persecuted everyone who worshiped Jesus.
She hid even from her own pagan husband, the head of the court chamber Adrian. Nevertheless, the young beauty tried to at least somehow help the righteous, bringing them medicine and food. However, one day the mercy of the Creator shone upon Adrian too. This happened when he interrogated 23 righteous people captured by order of the emperor. Amazed by their courage, the man believed in the true Lord and declared himself a Christian. Hearing about this, the ruler ordered his subject to be shackled and put in prison.
Adrian's spiritual insight was a real miracle, but he owes his resistance to torture to Natalia. Her life says that the woman tirelessly accompanied her husband. As soon as the man went to prison, the righteous woman immediately went to him, comforting her beloved with stories about the reward that awaits every associate of Jesus Christ. And when the executioners sent the martyr home, wanting him to be tempted by regrets about his former life, his wife closed the door in front of him and did not open it until he convinced her of the firmness of his intentions.
Convinced that Adrian’s resolve was not shaken by either imprisonment or verbal admonitions, Galerius ordered him to be tortured. The noble official was beaten with stakes, tied up and dragged along the ground. But Natalia was constantly with him, treating wounds and caring for her husband - for this she had to cut her hair and dress in men's clothes to look like a young man.
Even when the day of execution finally arrived, the girl did not leave her beloved. While the execution lasted - Adrian’s limbs were broken with a heavy hammer - she held her husband’s hand, encouraging him and distracting him from the pain.
As soon as all the ascetics gave up the ghost, the emperor ordered their bodies to be burned, depriving the relatives of their last consolation. Having learned about this, Natalia secretly took away her husband’s right hand and hid it in her house as a relic. And then the woman, suffering from separation from her beloved, almost threw herself into the fire on which the holy relics were placed. But suddenly clouds thickened in the sky, lightning flashed, striking the pagans, and rain poured down, extinguishing the fire. Frightened, the executioners left the execution site, and the believers were able to take the remains. One of the Christians volunteered to transport them to Byzantium, protecting them from further desecration.
Having been widowed, Natalia lived alone in Nicomedia. She was bitterly sad about her husband, and only earnest prayer saved the girl from melancholy and despair. But the righteous woman failed to observe mourning - soon a commander from Rome wooed her. Fleeing from an unwanted groom, the ascetic fled to Constantinople. The entire journey was accompanied by good omens - the fleet that rushed in pursuit was scattered by a storm, and the devil, who was knocking the ship off course, was driven out by Adrian, appearing before the believers in a shining halo.
Arriving in Constantinople, Natalia immediately went to the cathedral where the bodies of the martyrs were located. She placed her husband’s hand, which she had still kept next to her, to the shrines, and praised the Creator. And falling asleep after a difficult journey, the woman saw her husband. He announced: “Come to the rest prepared by the Lord, and accept the reward due to you!” Having awakened, the righteous woman told other Christians about the miraculous vision, and then quietly passed away into another world.
In memory of her bloodless asceticism, the icon of Saint Natalia can be equipped with a special attribute - a scroll with the words: “Let all things that are worldly, corruptible and harmful to the soul disappear from your mind.” This saying symbolizes zeal in faith and renunciation of earthly values for the sake of God.

Veneration and commemoration of the martyr
After Natalia's death, her body was placed next to Adrian's remains. And in Art. IV. a separate church in Constantinople was dedicated to the spouses. However, now the relics of the righteous woman are kept in the Basilica of San Lorenzo Maggiore. This building in Milan (Italy) was erected for meetings of the Roman Senate, but in the 7th century. Pope Honorius I ordered the building to be converted into a church. Around the same time, the shrine containing the bones of the martyr was also transported there.
St. Natalia's Day is celebrated on September 8 (August 26, old style). According to folk wisdom, if the morning of the holiday is cold and sunny, early frosts should be expected. In addition, by this date, the harvesting of oats was completed - the grain was brought into barns to dry before wintering, simultaneously preparing jelly, pancakes and delicacies from it for children.
