Plague and Muslims

The Moscow Danilovskoe cemetery was opened at the end of the 18th century near the settlement of Danilovskaya Sloboda near the monastery of the same name. Industrial production began to be built around the settlement, whose workers subsequently contributed to the development of the revolutionary movement.

The Danilovskoe cemetery became famous for the fact that at the height of the plague epidemic, up to eight hundred people who died from this terrible disease were buried there per day. Plague burials were located in the central area. Nearby, the slope of the Andreevsky ravine was given over to the graves of Muslims and representatives of other religions.

But after many years, people will find out about me and will come in droves for help in their sorrows and asking the Lord God to pray for them, and I will help everyone and hear everyone.”

Temple and churches of Danilovsky Pogost

Several Orthodox monasteries were built on the territory of the necropolis: the Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker and the Church of the Descent of the Holy Spirit. The Danilovskoe cemetery is visited by pilgrims and simply tourists, since here is one of the most revered burial places by believers - the grave of the Blessed Matrona of Moscow. And although the saint’s relics were transferred to the Intercession Monastery in 1998, there are no fewer pilgrims here.

Finding the relics of Saint Matrona

Matrona of Moscow left the mortal world on May 2, 1952; moreover, she, like many saints, predicted her own death in 3 days and never ceased to receive people in need of divine help. Her burial took place at the Danilovsky cemetery, because the old woman herself wanted to be here after death and hear the sounds of church services.

The saint predicted that after her death a small number of people would come to the grave, and later only close ones. She said: “When my relatives also go to God, the burial place will be completely deserted, however, the memory of me will be resurrected, and people will come here in droves to treat illnesses. I will hear and accept everyone, I will pray to the Lord for the salvation of our brothers and sisters.”

The prediction of the blessed saint came true, and Christian pilgrims began to come to the burial site to resolve the problems of sinful existence. Soon the Russian Orthodox Church decided to exhume the holy remains. On March 8, 1998, the relics of Matrona were transferred to the Danilovsky monastery, where the necessary liturgy and memorial service were held. The next day, the sacred remains were solemnly delivered to the church on the territory of the Intercession Monastery. The shrine was placed in a special shrine, which from now on became the object of prayers of Orthodox believers.

On a note! A chapel was erected at the grave, consecrated in honor of the blessed Matrona of Moscow. This place has the same miraculous power as the remains, as well as the icons with its image.

  • Some ask the saint to save their marriage and material well-being.
  • Pilgrims do not forget to read prayers for their brothers and sisters who suffer from the wrath of the elements (fires, floods). The oxbow is capable of pacifying nature through divine intervention
  • Matrona helps to succeed in work and study, strengthens faith in the Lord and blesses the believer on the true path.

Those who come who ask for something with a pure heart and without dark thoughts will undoubtedly receive it.

Graves of saints and historical figures

On the territory of the necropolis there are other burial places of saints, no less revered among believers. This is the grave of the Athonite hieromonk Aristocle and his disciple Hieromonk Isaiah, as well as the tombstones of other representatives of the Orthodox clergy.

The founders of the Tretyakov Gallery, merchants Pavel and Sergei Tretyakov, were buried at the Danilovsky cemetery, but in 1948 their remains were reburied at the Novodevichy cemetery. The defenders of the homeland who died during the Great Patriotic War also found peace in this graveyard. Today, a memorial is erected at the mass grave where the soldiers are buried.
