History of the Sign of the Cross in Orthodoxy
In the Orthodox faith, the sign of the cross is very important. It expresses faith in God, Jesus Christ, who suffered on the cross for the sins of the whole world, turning the cross into a weapon and a banner of victory over sin and death. Orthodox Christians wear a cross on their body and make the sign of the cross over themselves, showing their affiliation with the faith, love for Christ, and obedience to His will.
To make the sign of the cross, you need to correctly fold your fingers and fingers, and make the right movement with your hand. For many years there have been debates about how Orthodox Christians should be baptized correctly.
Initially, baptism with two fingers was accepted in Orthodoxy: in Constantinople - until the middle of the 13th century, in Rus' - until the middle of the 17th century. This is confirmed by the writings of Maxim the Greek, who argued that one should cross oneself with two fingers, overshadowing the forehead, navel, right and left shoulders of a Christian.
In 1551, the Council of the Hundred Heads confirmed the double-fingered constitution, but ordered that the sign be placed not on the stomach, but on the chest, where the heart is. In 1627, 1644 and 1648, the “Large Catechism”, “Cyril’s Book”, “The Book of the True Orthodox Faith” were published, the authors of which, contrary to the decision of the Council, considered it correct to put a cross on the stomach.
In 1656, the book “The Tablet” was printed and published: it included the works of the Damascene Studite on the sign of the cross. The essay said that you need to cross yourself with three fingers, placing your fingers on your forehead, stomach, then on your right shoulder and left. The Local and Great Moscow Councils, which marked Nikon's church reform, condemned and called heretics all those who were baptized with two fingers. Only in 1971 were all anathemas lifted from the Old Believers.
How do you spell the word “godmother”?
Every person should not only deeply honor his mother under the cross, but also know the basics of spelling, how to spell the word godmother. Literacy is needed not only when filling out documents and writing, but it is a distinctive feature of a person’s upbringing. There are many cases in the Russian language when the pronunciation and spelling of lexical units do not coincide. Therefore, you need to be very careful and conscious about studying the basics of grammar, so as not to make mistakes and also know how to spell godfather. Let's consider what part of speech the lexemes we are considering belong to, because it depends on the content of the expression in the sentence.
Requirements for recipients in Orthodoxy
The responsibilities of receivers are such that not every person can be allowed to perceive from the font
baptized Church rules eliminate this:
- Parents of the person being baptized and persons related by blood (this prohibition is not absolutely binding)
- Monks, since the monastic order is associated with complete renunciation of the world (historically, monastic authorities and monks of non-communal monasteries are successors).
- Underage.
- Gentiles, and not only non-Christians, but even heterodox ones. In some cases in the past, due to political circumstances, non-Orthodox recipients were allowed, but with the condition that they read the creed as it is read in the Orthodox Church.
Sources differ on the question of whether godfathers and mothers can marry each other: pre-revolutionary church law did not prevent this, many modern sources claim the opposite.
Spelled correctly
When pronouncing these terms, the sound -t- is lost; people who do not think about spelling norms express the words in writing as they hear them. Let's analyze the word according to its composition: cross-on-ya, a noun, animate, feminine, changes in numbers and cases. The morpheme is divided into three syllables, with the emphasis on the first, the basis of the lexeme is cross-, which is divided into the root cross-, the suffix -n-, the ending in the nominative case, the singular -aya.
To transfer, you cannot separate the last syllable, correctly divide the cross into two parts, a syllable with one vowel cannot be transferred to the next line and left in the previous one. Remember how to write godmother correctly and how to avoid mistakes when hyphenating a word. The morpheme cross-ny is also written with the letter -t-, masculine, but can appear in a sentence as either a noun or an adjective.
What rule do you need to know?
The morphemes under consideration are subject to the Russian language rule regarding the spelling of roots with unpronounceable consonants. The most common letter combinations found in words are -stn-, -zdn-, -lnts-, -rdts-, -stl-, which are pronounced without middle sounds. To check the spelling of voiceless and voiced unpronounceable consonants, you need to change or select a related word so that the unpronounceable consonant becomes pronounced, for example cross-cross, local-place, sun-solar.
Example sentences
- I don’t remember all the details of that last meeting, only the bright picture before my eyes when my godmother gave me a shawl scarf.
- Having settled down by the fire, we talked for a long time with my godfather and I did not notice how I fell asleep under his monotonous story.
- At dusk, my excited godmother approached me and asked the reason for my late walk.
- I often remember the early dawns spent fishing with my godfather on the lake and our intimate conversations.
An example with the meaning of an adjective, in this case the spelling is similar, but pronounced with the sound -e-.
- On the occasion of the opening of the Church of St. John Chrysostom, a religious procession took place along the main street of the village.
- At the beginning of the sermon, Father announced that he saw the Sign of the Cross, which came down to them as a harbinger of trouble.
Spelled incorrectly
It is incorrect to write the words kresnaya, kresny without the letter -t-.
Meaning of the word
After the natural mother, in terms of role in a person’s life, the godmother, the mother who is given at a person’s baptism, is of significant importance. Her main task is to fulfill the duties that she assumed during the sacrament of Baptism. She must pray for her child, teach him to pray, and convey to the child the meaning of the Law of God. She helps the child learn the basics of faith and shows interest in his spiritual life. Remember, “godmother” is written and used as a persistent phraseological unit, a synonym for the word godmother.
Responsibilities of a Godfather
The godfather's responsibilities include raising the child together with his parents. The godfather must himself know the basic Christian prayers: “Rejoice to the Virgin Mary,” “Heavenly King,” “Our Father,” “Creed.” In the future, he should teach these prayers to his godchild. The godfather must be a practicing, church person, otherwise he will not be able to accustom his godson or goddaughter to church life. Every morning the godfather must perform the morning rule of prayer, and in the evening - the evening rule. After the rule, reading special prayers that are contained in the Orthodox Prayer Book, the godfather must prayerfully remember his godchild. You can do this in your own words, ask God to grant health to the child, for spiritual admonition, for mental well-being, for prosperous growth.
After Holy Baptism has been performed on the child, the godfather - possibly together with the parents and godmother - must bring the child to church for worship. Of course, it is difficult to bring a small child to a full service, but to its most important part, to the Holy Eucharist during the liturgy, it is advisable to bring the child every Sunday. The godfather himself, if possible, should participate in the divine service, prepare for Confession and Communion, and begin these holy sacraments.
Congratulations to the godfather
During major holidays, the godfather should not forget to congratulate his godson and goddaughter. Naturally, during congratulations you need to give a gift. As a gift, the godfather can give various toys, things, clothes: everything that he considers necessary for his godchild. You can ask the baby's parents about this. When the child is older, you can ask him himself. But first of all, the godfather must remember his spiritual obligations to the godchild. Therefore, his gifts should also be useful for saving the soul of his godson or goddaughter. Such a gift could be the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments, or it could be a special children's Bible, which sets out the history of the Holy Scriptures for children in an accessible language. You can give a children's prayer book, children's spiritual literature. Now there is a large selection of various stories, poems, and biographies of the holy saints of God specifically for the youngest Christians. There is also a large selection of various videos and audio recordings reminiscent of church life, useful for the baby’s soul.
An icon of your godson's patron saint can be a wonderful gift. When a child sees an iconographic image of his patron saint, he constantly remembers him, prays to him, and his heart becomes accustomed to spiritual life. An important role is played by the adults who surround the baby. They must set an example of sincere prayer, spiritual appeal to God, to the Mother of God, to the saints of God. When a child sees this from childhood, then he, too, will be able to turn to the Lord in this way, and in difficult moments of his life, during sorrows, during illnesses, he will no longer lose heart, will not fold his hands, but will know what he needs to do as a believer.
