TOP 10 Modern films about Christians and Christianity

In the previous TOP 10, dedicated to the films “TOP 10 Contemporary Films with Christian Values,” we talked about ten films whose characters can be described as “an absolutely ordinary guy/girl.”

These people grew up in completely different cultures, lived in the world, but willingly or unwillingly followed Christian values, because they listened to the quiet knocking at the door of their hearts. Behold, I stand at the door and knock: if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and will dine with him, and he with Me (Apoc. 3:20).

Today we want to offer you ten deeper artistic films, the characters of which are Christians or even hold the priesthood. The ideals of our today's heroes pose even more serious tasks for them, since they have already outgrown the level of a “good person” and strive for holiness and deification.

The example of our today's heroes will give us even more food for thought. The selection does not include documentaries and films released before the 21st century. We tried to collect for you only relatively new feature films that most clearly reveal the images and thoughts of the characters.

1. Pop

Against the backdrop of the Great Patriotic War, the story unfolds about the fate of Father Alexander Ionin, who is notable for being the most ordinary Russian priest... This is not a learned monk, not a famous bishop, not a hermit in the distant desert. He lives with his wife, raises several children and, to the best of his ability, tries to maintain faith and piety in himself and his parishioners.

The film touches on so many important topics for a Christian that there is no way to talk about them all in a review - these are relationships in the family, and the ability to forgive, and love for the Fatherland, and love for God, which is higher than love even for the Motherland, and difficult choice of Truth.

One day, a priest has to dissuade a Jewish girl from baptism, who has understood the truth of Orthodoxy, but having accepted the Sacrament will forever become an outcast among her fellow tribesmen. The girl remains solid as a stone and later enters the family of Father Alexander as his most devoted daughter.

During the war, the priest, willy-nilly, has to communicate with the Germans in order to try to alleviate the plight of Russian prisoners of war. The Soviet authorities do not forgive him for this, and after the liberation of Pskov, Father Alexander is sent to the camps for many years... But he does not lose, and even increases in his soul, love for his neighbors.

“The Lord gives us wives, most often completely different from us. Well, just take me and my Alevtina Andreevna. I am thin, slender, fit. She is round and plump. Look at us from the outside: I am one, she is zero. But together we form the Ten. Without me, without one, she would be zero, but without her, without zero, I would remain just one...” Father Alexander said about the meaning of Christian marriage.

2. Parables

“Parables” is an unusually successful experiment in modern Orthodox cinema. The picture consists of three small short stories, strongly reminiscent of stories about devotees of piety from ancient Christian patericons.

The first parable, “Unusual Obedience,” talks about the sin of pride and the value of Christian humility, but presents the lesson in the classic parable form of an entertaining and sometimes even funny story.

"God! Why can't you hear us? People go to church, pray, but they don’t feel any better...”, the priest addresses our Heavenly Father in the next parable. The angel's answer to this question discourages the audience, who ultimately receive an important spiritual lesson (based on the work of St. Basil of Kineshma).

“In one city there lived a woman. She kept fasts, read the Gospel, attended church...” And then one day she gives alms to a beggar, and she says: “Christ will come to you today,” - so begins the third of the short stories, told with love, warmth and humor.

After its appearance in 2010, “Proverbs” gained such popularity that several more sequels to this wonderful project were later released. They are no less worthy, but we included only the first part in our collection.

3. Daughter

In a small provincial town, fate brings high school student Inna together with Ilya, the son of a priest. Inna’s new friend Masha, who moved to the outback from the big city, tries to intervene in their emerging bright relationship, but does not achieve success.

Inna's stern father had previously lost his wife. He works all day in the food industry. He raises his daughter and little son in strictness, trying to prohibit them from today's dirty entertainments and keep children's souls pure.

The story unfolds against the backdrop of horror that filled the city after the appearance of a serial maniac who kills teenage girls. He does not take money from them and does not show intimate interest in them, but takes their lives in cold blood. One of the killer’s victims is the priest’s daughter and Elijah’s sister...

4. Passion of Christ

In 2004, the famous American actor and director Mel Gibson presented to the world his reconstruction of the last 12 hours of the life of the Lord Jesus Christ, based as accurately as possible on the Gospel narrative.

The film begins with the “prayer for the cup” in the Garden of Gethsemane, where the Savior was accompanied by his most faithful disciples. But they also retreat from him after the arrival of the armed servants of the high priest, who drag the Lord to judgment and punishment.

The further narration reproduces in the smallest detail the trial of the Sanhedrin, and then the trial of Pilate, demonstrative reprisals and humiliations, the Savior’s way of the cross to Calvary and, finally, His crucifixion on the cross. The film ends with a shot of the resurrection of the God-man from the dead on the third day after burial.

The film is excellent in picture quality and very meticulous in its historical details. During filming, a board was placed on the actor’s back under the makeup, as they hit it with a real whip. For greater authenticity, the actors in the film pronounce their dialogues in the Aramaic dialect of the 1st century.

Every Christian should watch this film in order to understand what exactly the Savior had to endure in atonement for the sins of each of us...

5. Angel's chapel

The film begins with the fact that the young Soviet commissar Maxim Proshin, himself the son of a priest, personally shoots the arrested priest...

Later, the “distinguished” fighter with the “enemies of Soviet power” is sent by the security chief to the island of Konevets on Lake Ladoga (at that time the territory of Finland), with the task of killing the former tsarist general, and now the Finnish national leader, Carl Gustav Emil Mannerheim.

Maxim arrives at the monastery under the guise of a novice with the firm intention of completing the task. Unexpectedly for everyone, including himself, in the ancient island monastery Maxim begins to become spiritually enlightened. He repents of the atrocities he previously committed and takes monasticism.

The task turns out to be a failure, which Maxim is not forgiven for. 15 years after Maxim became a monk, the monastery was occupied by Soviet troops as a result of the war and the former assistant to the young commissar shot him for treason.

6. Elder Paisios and I, standing upside down

In the 20th century, Saint Paisios (Eznepidis), now glorified among the saints, lived on Holy Mount Athos in a feat of prayer. We know him under the name of “Reverend Paisius the Holy Mountain”. Another Athonite monk, Christodoulus Agiorite, recorded the stories of monks and local residents about the ascetic and his teachings. Based on these stories, the biographical drama “Elder Paisios and I, Standing Upside Down” was filmed in Russia.

Already in his declining years, Elder Paisius lives in a certain monastery. There, a young novice begins his spiritual life, who, with the help of the elder’s lessons, comprehends its deep laws. An old monk who has lived a difficult life looks at everything at the same time simply and wisely. And the young novice is still looking for visible miracles. And so, almost the foolishness of one and the youthful maximalism of the other form a variety of collisions, funny and sad.

The place of the exploit of Elder Paisius in the film is moved to the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Monastery, located in the village of Neshcherov near Kiev. Novice Peter, as a former student of the Institute of Cinema and Television, with the blessing of the abbot, is making a documentary about Elder Paisius. But he turns out to be a parable...

7. Heal Fear (Luke)

The plot of the film is the memoirs of the already elderly Archbishop Luke (Voino-Yasenetsky) and was based on the memoirs of the saint, whose life was truly amazing...

A highly professional surgeon and scientist who left numerous scientific works to the world, an archbishop and a saint, an artist, a writer, a father of many children. At the height of the Soviet persecution of faith, surgeon Valentin Feliksovich Voino-Yasenetsky takes the priesthood, thereby signing his own death sentence. Those around him were perplexed: why would a successful doctor with a guaranteed bright future choose such a thorny path? But Saint Luke was a whole person and wanted to heal not only bodies, but also souls.

The film “Cure Fear” reminds each of us of the timeless reality of the Holy Church of Christ. Where saints are not a bygone reality of past centuries, unknown hermits hiding from the world in distant monasteries. People like St. Luke live in close proximity to us today. And if we are not able to discern these ascetics, then the problem is our spiritual blindness.

8. Time Changer

1890 At a Baptist seminary, professors gathered to discuss and recommend for publication the theological work of one of their colleagues, Dr. Russell Carlisle. To print at the expense of the seminary funds, the approval of each of the council members was required, and they all gave their consent. But one of the professors, Dr. Norris, suddenly opposed it.

“But Dr. Carlyle implies...that we can teach the teachings of Christ without mentioning His name. In my opinion, this will not work, ... without mentioning the name of Christ, we offer humanity the opportunity to choose. And moral principles become a private opinion. One says that stealing is wrong, and the second may say that it is not so. Thus, there is nothing to rely on,” Professor Norris explained his fundamental disagreement with his colleague Carlyle.

Carlisle is offended by Norris, but even his friend’s deep resentment is unable to shake Norris’s conviction that he is right, because he has amazing knowledge... He invented a time machine and visited the future that Carlisle calls for. Norris and Carlisle are sent 100 years ahead, to 1990, so that he can see for himself what preaching Christian values without mentioning the name of the Lord can lead to...

9. The monk and the demon

"Legion: Get up, Vanya! Get up! Otherwise the hot stuff gets cold! Will you have foie gras pate? From the liver of geese fed with walnuts... Mmm!.. I highly recommend it! Rack of lamb, smoked eel caught in Lake Timiryatskoye. Dessert Creme Brulee, cakes, Blancmange. Then you will pray, then. “Prayer is waiting, there’s no hot food!” That’s what they say in our hell. A glass of wine will not reduce your mind. Will you, Van?

Ivan [having finished his prayer]: I-I don’t drink.

Legion: They don’t drink only in heaven, but in Rus' - you can’t offer it to anyone!”

First half of the 19th century. A new monk, Ivan Semenovich, appears in the monastery. But along with the monk, dark forces penetrate the monastery, which materialize in the person of the demon Legion, who must be able to force Ivan to fall.

But the monk is strong in spirit and learns not only to resist the temptations of the demon, but even to love and pity this fallen creature, which the demon can no longer withstand...

The film is shot in the form of an entertaining, bright parable with excellent dialogues:

“Wisdom is such a specific state of mind. Have you tried it, sir?

“No, God was merciful.”

10. Island

“What are you doing, Father Anatoly? — I’m reading the book of human sins. Now I’ll finish reading it, put it in the oven, and there’s no sin. - What are you doing, you damned one?! — I'm going to read the second page. - What page is this when these are my boots? - And there is no second one. All! Didn’t you know that the tops of the bishop’s boots contain the most sins?” the fireman of the northern monastery enlightened the abbot of his monastery.

In his youth, Father Anatoly betrayed his comrade during the Great Patriotic War and the Germans dealt with him. The road of repentance led Anatoly to the monastery, where for many years he begged for forgiveness, played the fool and fulfilled the obedience of a stoker.

Over the years of asceticism, God rewarded his novice with the gift of insight and healing of people, and pilgrims flocked to the monastery. The abbot of the monastery understood that a real saint lived in his monastery, but Father Economist did not like Anatoly and was jealous of him. Until I myself saw his holiness...

At the end of his earthly journey, the elder was honored to meet with his old friend, whom he had once betrayed. He not only managed to survive after being wounded by the Germans, but also became an admiral. Elder Anatoly heals the possessed daughter of a military sailor and asks him for forgiveness for his cowardice. The admiral forgives him and the saint receives peace before his death.

There is no ideological meaning in the film, but there is another idea that each viewer must understand in their own way.

Instead of photographs there are icons. And instead of chronicles, there are healed patients. His life is filled with actions that are completely incomprehensible to modern man. From the point of view of a simple man in the street, Luka (Voino-Yasenetsky) did everything “wrong.” He ruined a doctor’s career, spoiled relations with the authorities, refused high positions, and did not take money from patients. He could become an artist and get his hands dirty only with paints, but he became an archbishop, a victim of political repression and a “peasant doctor.” He saved the sick during his lifetime and continues to heal them after death. Evgeny Efremov believes that he has two birthdays. 9 years ago he was admitted to intensive care with a broken head. Doctors were already preparing relatives for the worst. But thanks to the prayers to Saint Luke, Zhenya is completely healthy today. The authors of the film visited Simferopol. Here Luke served and received the sick during the last years of his life. Perhaps it is just a coincidence, but the return of Crimea to Russia took place on the day the relics of St. Luke were found. In Simferopol we found the great-niece of the Saint. She told me what her “uncle” was like, as she called him. How he lived the last 15 years of his life. We found a man who saw Luka while still a student. Anatoly Babanin reveres the Saint and dreams of introducing the Voino-Yasenetsky oath into the compulsory program for medical students. Doctors of Simferopol created a special community of Orthodox doctors. They venerate the Saint and ask for help. We met with surgeon Viktor Shuvaev. Head of the department of bone-purulent infection. He has seen so many things in his life that it seems nothing would surprise him. But a couple of years ago a real miracle happened to him. He was healed of an illness that had tormented him for 18 years. The things, objects and furniture of St. Luke, they are today kept in a museum on the territory of the Holy Trinity Monastery in Simferopol. You experience amazing sensations when you see the glasses, books or instruments of a Saint. There is a special atmosphere here. The relics of St. Luke are kept in a silver shrine, which was donated in 2002 by Greek clergy - Metropolitan Nektarios (Andonopoulos) and Father Michael. And the monastery itself stands on Odesskaya Street, which until 46 was Greek. And there is a special sign in this too. It’s paradoxical, but true – St. Luke of Crimea is revered more in Greece than in Russia. Although the saint has never been to this country. There are more than 30 churches named after St. Luke. It turns out that the Greeks learned about him thanks to Metropolitan Nektarios (Andonopoulos). He was so struck by the life of Voino-Yasenetsky that he decided to devote his life to spreading knowledge about Vladyka Luke. We recorded an interview with Metropolitan Nektariy. He showed amazing icons of Luke, made by Greek masters, which are completely different from ours, and introduced us to people who, through prayers to Saint Luke, remained alive or were healed from serious illnesses. Filming took place in Tashkent. The city where a turning point occurred in the soul of the Saint, then still a young doctor. Here he became a priest, here he was first taken into exile, and here he lost his beloved woman. Tashkent surgeons took us to the operating room where Voino-Yasenetsky worked, and residents showed us his house. Using the biography of Saint Luke, you can study the history and geography of Russia. He survived the Russian-Japanese, World War I, revolution, Civil and Great Patriotic Wars, persecution of the Church, camps and exile. The longest exile was to the Krasnoyarsk Territory. This is where the St. Luke train runs today. A mobile consultative and diagnostic service, or simply a health train in common parlance. He walks through the most remote villages and villages of the Krasnoyarsk Territory. To where St. Luke once served his exile. We will tell you how patients are received, how doctors live and work. In Sevastopol we found a priest who is like two peas in a pod like St. Luke. Moreover, the similarity is not only external, but also biographical. Father Vyacheslav, like Luka, was a surgeon, and then became a priest. In Tambov we found a nurse who worked with Luka during the war years. Today she is 97 years old. Saint Luke of Crimea. This man became a legend of the 20th century, combining seemingly opposite things: the high education of the legendary surgeon and the deep faith of the Orthodox bishop. The white robe and black cassock were with him until the end of his days. He could give up money, comfort, fame. But never retreat from your path.

Icon (2012)

The film consists of two parts: “Tbilisi - Moscow” and “In Search of St. George”. They are connected by one subtle artistic detail - the icon of St. George.

The film tells the story of the miraculous icon of St. George the Victorious, lost in 1921, in search of which Father Dimitri goes in our time. The tracks lead him to a small Russian village.

Title: Icon Year of release: 2012 Genre: Fiction, drama Director: Zaza Merabishvili, Jaba Ruadze Duration: 1:08:59

The premiere of Channel One is the film “Icon”, where the main roles were played by Ekaterina Rednikova and Andrei Panin. In addition to them, there is a representative cast of Russian and Georgian actors. The curator of the film is the legendary director Rezo Chkheidze. Events develop in an unexpected way. The fate of the icon seems to unite the fates of the heroes themselves: the terminally ill Georgian Lali, who came to Moscow for treatment, and her childhood friend, the Russian Nina, who was once saved by Lali’s father and unexpectedly turned out to be the wife of Levan, Lali’s first love; Father Dimitri, who did not lose hope of finding the icon, and thief Anatoly, who escaped from justice, and had a hand in the second theft of the icon; a girl who did not believe in her recovery, and her father, who drank himself to death from grief. Around the icon, as if deliberately, their paths intersect. Apparently, they were destined by their actions to prove the superiority of kindness and honesty over evil and crime, to make it clear that only mutual love, wisdom, and nobility can save the world from violence, help people find peace of mind and faith in the future. After difficult and long trials, the icon of St. Georgia took her place in the primary home - the Georgian church, and in a distant Russian village, Father Dimitri, together with the ennobled, cleansed former thief Anatoly, who believed in a miracle, the father of the girl cured by the prayers of Father Dimitri, and parishioners, restores the destroyed church. The ringing of the bell reaches the snowy peaks of Kavkasioni. It doesn’t matter anymore who, how and when returned the icon. It is important that with her blessing the hearts of people of different nationalities, ages, and worldviews united, their souls were purified, and Faith, Hope and Love triumphed.

Kolya and his night companion Mirra slowly return to their unit along the streets of Brest. The real prototypes of Nikolai Pluzhnikov and the foreman are unknown soldiers of the Red Army who fought in the Brest Fortress. The recollections of various witnesses and eyewitnesses, which S. Smirnov collected in his book “Brest Fortress,” indicate that the prototype of the foreman was an unknown Red Army soldier who, on July 15, 1941, threw himself from the Terespol Tower with a bunch of grenades onto a German column passing through the Terespol Gate fortresses Pluzhnikov’s prototype was an unknown Red Army soldier (or commander), who lasted until April 1942 (in the film - until the winter of 1941). The prototype of Reuben Svitsky was the violinist Zalman Stavsky, who allegedly saw one of the last defenders of the fortress and was later shot along with other residents of the ghetto. Boris Vasiliev, the author of the story “Not on the Lists,” had a negative attitude towards this production, since “it was impossible to make one series out of the story. In one episode you won’t have time to show the main thing: how a boy grows into a folk hero who is no longer afraid of anything, for him death is deliverance from torment, from memories, from grief, from everything!”
