Holy Martyr Fanurius the Newly Revealed

Holy Martyr Uar, life

The holy martyr Uar came from a noble family.
He was a military commander under the Emperor Diocletian and served in the army in Egypt during the persecution of Christians, at the end of the 3rd - beginning of the 4th century. Saint War secretly helped Christians imprisoned, bringing them food at night, supporting them, and healing their wounds. He was a secret Christian, but did not openly admit his faith. However, after one of the seven holy ascetics who were in prison for the faith of Christ died, Uar decided to take his place and opened himself before the judge at the trial. Huar was subjected to severe torture. They beat him with sticks, hung him from a tree, tore off the skin from his back and tore his womb so much that his insides fell out of it. Only after a few hours of torment, Saint Uar died, and several of his companions were executed along with him. Before this, at the request of Saint Uar, they offered prayers for the granting of strength to him to endure suffering with dignity.

The pious woman Cleopatra, who was present at the execution, waited until nightfall and, together with her son John and other Christians, took the remains of Huar to bury him in the basement of her house. After some time, Cleopatra decided to return to her homeland, Palestine, and took with her the Holy Relics of Huar, saying that it was her late husband. The relics of Saint Uar were placed near Mount Tabor. A Church was built there, where believers came to receive healing from the Holy relics.

During the holiday in honor of the consecration of the temple, the son of the pious Cleopatra unexpectedly died. His mother was inconsolable, sobbing she asked for help from Saint War, because she herself had helped him before. Exhausted from tears, the woman fell asleep and saw in a dream her son, who stood next to Saint Uar in the shining armor of the Holy Army. Uar reproached Cleopatra for her lack of faith and said that her son would stand before the throne of God; if he remained alive, he would serve the earthly king, and not the heavenly one. The son also assured his mother that he wanted to be with the Lord in Heaven. Cleopatra begged to take her with her, but Saint Uar replied that her time had not yet come, she still needed to work on earth for the glory of God.

Waking up, Cleopatra dressed her son's body in festive clothes and buried him. Having distributed all her property to those in need, she began to serve in the Church of St. War, in the same place where her son John was buried. When her time came, she went to the Lord peacefully, Cleopatra was buried next to her son.

Martyr Uar

Oh, venerable holy martyr Uare, we kindle with zeal for the Lord Christ, you confessed the Heavenly King before the tormentor, and for Him you suffered zealously, and now the Church honors you, as you are glorified by the Lord Christ with the glory of Heaven, Who has given you the grace of great boldness towards Him, and now you stand before Him with the Angels, and rejoice in the Highest, and see clearly the Holy Trinity, and enjoy the light of the Beginning Radiance, remember also our relatives' yearning, who died in wickedness, accept our petition, and like Cleopatrine, you freed the unfaithful race from eternal torment with your prayers , so remember those who were buried in opposition to God, who died unbaptized, striving to ask for deliverance from eternal darkness, so that we may all praise the Most Merciful Creator with one mouth and one heart forever and ever. Amen.

Another sedalene, voice 3:

Eternal joys of the inhabitant, namesake of Heavenly peace, Great Ware, daring and daring to remember before the Lord the tender couple of our ancestors, even if we do not lay you in their tomb, but with a zealous request for pity, from them, we join you. In the same way, fall down and pray, for the Master will not reject your presence, but bows down out of immeasurable goodness, and will send deliverance and great mercy to the distressed.

Glory, and now:

Most Holy Lady, glorified by the Heavenly Powers and exalted, Mother of the King of all, where and when Your glory and majesty wants to increase, isn’t it then, when You intercede for sinners and cover the whole world with Your prayers, and today, O Lady, multiply Your splendor exaltation, deliver with Your warm prayers from fierce torment our unfaithful and unbaptized relatives, and those remembered with them (names), and grant them deliverance and great mercy.

Irmos: You are my strength, Lord, You are my strength, You are my God, You are my joy, do not leave the bosom of the Father, and having visited our poverty, with the prophet Habakkuk I call to You: glory to Your strength, Lover of mankind.

Elma, the most passion-bearing one, loves everyone who comes running to you with faith, and we also love to be with those who pray to you for good luck. What else will the Humane-loving One do with the desire to glorify you, if not by giving the requested mercy to the touched and all joy to those deprived of the eternal prisoner (name), and henceforth, O good martyr, do not pray for these in poverty.

Glory: There is, O great martyr, and the love of mankind reaches the Lord and to those who are in the sea far away, stand also today and, falling down, beg Him to have mercy on those who have been removed from both faith and baptism, our deceased relatives who have died and all those who are remembered with them (names ), grant forgiveness and great mercy.

Song 6

Irmos: I will cleanse, O Savior, for my iniquities are many, and bring me up from the depths of evil, I pray: I have cried out to You, and hear me, O God of my salvation.

Let the vacillations of the enemy not rejoice, having received souls for gain, but you, martyr, with your warm prayers, destroy his desires, begging the Lord to forgive the names we remember, and to deliver us from that eternal torment.

The beginning of our feat is Cleopatrine's kind of forgiveness, from here, with the guilty perception, raise you up to prayer, and for those whom we remember (names), do not despise, great martyr, and do not reject the presence of sinners, but, having striven, ask the Lord Christ for forgiveness and deliverance from bitter torment.

Glory: For the sake of unbelief you seeth the end of evils, and the aspirations of good things are greatly destroyed by the wrath of God for the sake of God, but you, more passionate, receive boldness, the joy of forgiveness instead of terrible torment from the Heavenly King and, having been delivered from grief, observe in the Master's mercy.

And now: Kaya, Lady, will anger overcome Your Mother of prayer? Truly, if you appear today, praying for those asked by You (names), grant them joyful forgiveness, deliverance and great mercy.

And now: The wise prophet said to Mount Thee, but we believe that the Stone of the Mother of God will come from You without the admixture of men; Through whom we received our salvation and from the depths of hell we were raised, O Lady, raise up today from hell the names we remember (names), so that we may unceasingly magnify You, the All-Merciful.

Song 8

Irmos: By the Musikian body harmonizing and by the countless people worshiping the image in Deir, the three youths, disobeying, sang and glorified the Lord forever.

Lamb of God, who redeemed us with His Most Pure Blood, having heard the prayer of Feklino and Blessed Gregory, received the petition of Methodius with many and Macarius, and given joy and deliverance to the evil-believers to the dead, and Chrysostom wrote a prayer for these, having erected, accept therefore, O Lord, with this glorious Uar and through their prayers (names) are remembered from us, forgive and have mercy.

Song 9

Irmos: Heaven was horrified at this, and the ends of the earth were amazed, for God had appeared as a man in the flesh, and Your womb was the most spacious of Heaven, and thus Thee, the Mother of God, the Angels and the people of the ranks are magnified.

In the same way, hasten, O Generous One, and strive, for the merciful have mercy on these, as much as you can, even though you can.

Prayer to Saint Phanurius

Several centuries ago, almost no one knew about the martyr Phanuri. The history of Saint Fanurius is full of mysteries and is still not fully known; there is no information even about the exact time of the saint’s life; it is assumed that it was the 3rd century after the Nativity of Christ. But many miraculous deeds of the saint are known.

Life of Saint Phanurius

There are no documents about the life of the saint, no legends have been preserved, they learned about him under unusual circumstances. On the island of Rhodes in the 16th century, Muslim occupiers discovered the ruins of a small church. Among the rubble they found an icon, intact and bright, unlike all the others. This icon depicted Phanurius in the center with a cross in his right hand and twelve marks in a circle. Each of the marks was a depiction of a scene from the life of the martyr Phanurius: his prayers, the tortures he endured, the defeat of the evil one. It was thanks to this icon that the holy martyr Fanuria became known. A church in honor of Saint Phanurius was restored at the same place, and miracles soon began there.

The miraculous deeds of Saint Phanurius

Three righteous deacons crossing from the island of Crete to Kythira were captured by Muslims and brought to Rhodes, where they were going to be sold into slavery. The men did not mourn their fate for long, but when they learned about the great martyr, they began to pray to Fanurius for help. The deacons nevertheless ended up in captivity to three different masters, but by the grace of God they all received permission to pray to Saint Phanurius in his church.

It so happened that the deacons arrived at the temple at the same time, they together prayed to Saint Phanuri the Wonderworker for deliverance from slavery. That same night, all the owners dreamed of a martyr, ordering the slaves to be freed so that they could serve the Lord, and he promised punishment for disobedience. But Muslims did not attach any significance to dreams. The next night everything happened again. In the morning the owners woke up blind and paralyzed. They immediately understood what was happening and sent messengers for the priests, who said that prayers would help them heal and get rid of pain. Fanuriy again appeared to the Muslims with orders to send documents to the church releasing the clergy. The letters were sent by messengers to the church and placed near the icon of the martyr. A miracle happened - blindness and pain disappeared. The priests, taking the image of Saint Phanurius, went to Crete.

What do they pray to Saint Phanurius of Rhodes?

Most often they read a prayer to the holy martyr Fanurius about the loss. Not only things and people are lost, but also souls. From Greek the name of the saint can be translated as “pointing”, “showing”; Fanurius instructs people on the right path. It also helps to find missing things.

Because of the name of the saint, a tradition has developed in Rhodes. If the item can be found, sweet bread is baked and distributed to the poor.

Saint Fanourius

Biography (life). AYOS FANOURIOS

Saint Nicholas of Serbia (Velimirović): “Children do not need to despair because of the sins of their parents. After all, this is not blind fate. The all-merciful Lord can stop punishment on children if true repentance and prayer to Him, the Heavenly Father, for forgiveness are shown. The mother of Saint Fanurius (August 27/September 9) was a dishonest woman, but her son did not suffer punishment for his mother’s sins. Not only did he not suffer punishment, but he became a saint. Fanurius, realizing that his mother was a sinner, constantly prayed to God for her. You also pray to God for your relatives and parents. When the Lord forgives dead sinners, then their sin will not fall as a heavy burden on the shoulders of their descendants. This is the meaning of prayer for the dead - so that the Lord forgives their sins” - St. Nicholas of Serbia. // Saint Nicholas of Serbia (Velimirovich). About the three most important things. Selected letters to spiritual children.

Little is known from reliable sources about Saint Fanouris the Great Martyr. Living around the third century AD, he came back to us through an iconographic image discovered on the island of Rhodes in the 16th century. Then the local Algerian administration, which was a vassal subordinate to the Ottoman administration, decided to repair the fortress walls. The builders, the Greeks, began work. While dismantling one of the dilapidated walls, they came across a tiny built-up early Christian church. Time and dampness turned almost all the icons here into dust. Only one stood out for its integrity. The Orthodox realized that they were facing a miracle. The icon was taken to the Metropolitan of Rhodes Nil. He began to study the image with surprise. A young man dressed in the rich uniform of a Roman officer was looking at him. The signature read: Agios Fanouris. Revealed. Judging by his name, the young man was of Greek origin. Smaller pictures running along the edge of the main image showed the Metropolitan scenes of the Saint’s torment. Here he is interrogated with passion. The Roman commander's subordinates, dissatisfied with what they heard, hit Fanuris in the mouth with stones. The anger of the Alachi is growing. They are already beating the saint with sticks. He fell from the blows. The half-dead and naked martyr is thrown into prison, where he indulges in prayer. Interrogation again. The executioners burn the body of Fanouris. Then they use some kind of torture mechanisms. Having lost patience, they throw the saint into a pit with wild animals. But they don't touch Fanouris. Then he is tortured by fire again. The saint is burned. He accepts death with a calm expression. Metropolitan Nil must have had an outstanding mind, for he conducted a whole study of the paintings on the icon. It was he who determined the approximate date of Fanouris’s life, based on the period of the most severe persecution of Christians. The Saint's parents were believers themselves, as they gave their son a sonorous name. It was dangerous though. In one of the versions of the life of Saint Fanouris, I happened to read that “his mother was a bad person.” Even that “harlot”. And her son prayed for her. Where did such a version come from if it was not among the images? There are, of course, revelations. The saint appears to people through prayer. Maybe he told someone something like that. Metropolitan Nil did not find anything like this on the icon; I repeat, this is the only tangible source of information. And it is doubtful that a bad woman would give her child a good Christian name. Moreover, at that time believers were very strict in their morals. Lord Nil appealed to the head of the occupation administration with a request to give permission to build a special temple in honor of the discovered Saint. But he was refused. He did not humble himself, for he saw a miracle in the appearance of the icon. Sign. I went to Constantinople to see the Patriarch himself. From the point of view of the Turks, this position is an bureaucratic one. Moreover, this remains the case to this day. The Patriarch is the mediator and responsible for all Orthodox Christians in Turkey. Nile's request was submitted to the Sultan and permission was obtained to build the temple. It still exists in Rhodes and is considered one of the island's attractions.

History of the Temple of St. Fanourius of Rhodes

The temple, which previously existed in the era of chivalry, was consecrated in honor of Saint Fanourius after the end of the Second World War - in 1946, when many churches that previously belonged to the Orthodox community were returned to it. It was decided to dedicate the temple to a local martyr, whose veneration was already widespread in Crete, thanks to the story of three Cretan priests who were captured by pirates and sold into Turkish slavery in Rhodes and miraculously released through the prayers of Saint Phanourius.

The name of the saint in whose honor this temple was originally consecrated is unknown. According to archival sources, this church was located outside the city and was destroyed. Two versions are cited as a possible cause of destruction:

  • destruction due to the expansion of the Byzantine wall by the knights;
  • dismantled in 1481 to prevent it from being used to support a siege by the Ottomans.

During Ottoman rule in Rhodes, the temple was converted into a Muslim mosque, which was called Payal el-Din Mejid (Παϊάλ ελ ντιν μετζίτ). It is mentioned as the Payal El Din Majid Mosque in all historical sources from the Ottoman and Italian times.

During the work to restore the destroyed wall, carried out by the Ottomans after the capture of the fortress, Greek workers found the ruins of a temple under the rubble. Among the icons, which were in a deplorable state due to time and dampness (it was impossible even to read the names of the saints), there was one that seemed to have been painted quite recently. Thus, the face of the holy Great Martyr Phanurius was miraculously revealed, whose feat was evidenced by the images around the icon. The workers handed over the find to Metropolitan Nile of Rhodes, who obtained from the Sultan the restoration of the destroyed temple.

In the Church of St. Fanourius, built in the form of a free cross with a dome and a vestibule added later in the western part, three different layers of frescoes are recognized. The first, dating from the first half of the 13th century, is located in the area of the altar, and the second - 1335/6. - throughout the church and in the vestibule. The second layer obviously repeats the motifs of the first. The third layer probably dates from the mid-15th century, and has been recognized in places throughout the wall area of the main nave of the church.

The iconographic program of the first layer is thought to be the result of the sponsorship of a patron of the arts, a member of the upper and/or highest social class of the city, as it is considered the work of a mature, inspired artist, perhaps coming from a larger center, with obvious influences from the art of Nicaea in Asia Minor.

Of interest from the second layer is the extended rendition of the Second Coming, located above the archaeological arches on either side of the door.

The eschatological content of the iconographic painting of the walls, apparently, was a personal choice of the artists who depicted the paradise landscape on the drum of the southern part of the western support of the temple.

The frescoes of the last layer were preserved and restored aesthetically during renovations as part of the restoration work carried out by the Italian Archaeological Service during the occupation. The original images are a continuation on this layer, which is the most extensive.

Despite the poor state of preservation of its frescoes, the Temple of Agios Phanourios is an interesting example of a surviving temple with a complete iconographic program in the city of Rhodes. The exact image of 1355/6, on the basis of which one can get a visual representation of other temples, is important for knowledge of the history of the island, and a guideline in the approach to painting of this period.

Veneration of Saint Phanurius of Rhodes

An interesting tradition is associated with the veneration of Saint Fanurius. Believers bake Lenten pie according to a special recipe:

  • olive oil
  • flour
  • cinnamon
  • sugar
  • water
  • sometimes raisins,

which is called "pie of St. Fanourius" or in Greek fanuropita (φανουρόπιτα). They are brought to the temple on the day of remembrance of the saint or on another day as an offering, implying some kind of request. The pie is blessed by the priest, divided into small pieces and distributed with the recommendation to pray for the forgiveness of the mother of Saint Fanourius, who, according to legend, was a sinner. As a rule, they ask for what was lost: things, work, etc.

Veneration of Saint Uar in Russia

The day of remembrance of Saint War and the Christians who were tormented with him, Blessed Cleopatra and her son John - October 19, old style, November 1, new style.

  • Saint Uar is especially revered in Rus'. This is connected with the name of the Holy Righteous Tsarevich Dmitry, the youngest son of Ivan the Terrible. Tsarevich Dmitry was born on October 19, 1582 on the day of remembrance of the Holy Martyr Huar. After the death of Tsarevich Dmitry, the people began to pray at the relics of the youth, which were located in the chapel of St. Uar of the Archangel Cathedral of the Kremlin.
  • Believers prayed for the children, and through their prayers healings and other miracles were performed.
  • They pray to Saint War for children and the health of babies. There is also a tradition to consider Saint War a prayer book for those who died in unbelief, without the sacrament of Baptism, for drunkards who hanged themselves and sectarians who have lost their minds. In church they pray for the children of the Church, but privately, in home prayer, people ask Saint Uar for intercession, asking for a blessing for this.

Saint's life story

The future saint was born in the 4th century, in Ethiopia. For his dark skin color, he received the nickname “Murin”. Initially, Moses served as a slave in the family of a respectable citizen who did not beat or abuse his servants. However, the fate of a man who lives by honest and righteous labor did not appeal to the man, and he went against the law - divine and human. Moses drank and led a riotous lifestyle, which ultimately led him to a serious crime - murder. The owner immediately drove him out of his house, and Murin did not find anything more worthy than leading a gang of robbers.

For many years, together with his accomplices, Murin robbed, shed the blood of his compatriots, and deprived women of the honor and innocence. He had enormous physical strength and instilled fear in people. Once he even swam across the Nile, taking a sharp sword in his teeth, only to kill a shepherd who had offended him. Unable to grab the man, he angrily tore to pieces four lambs that were being watched by a shepherd. Like the barbarian Moses, he ate the meat raw, sold the skins, and drank wine for a week with this money. But one day he realized how low he had fallen and went to the gates of the monastery to beg the monks to accept him.

When they saw Moses at the gate, they decided that he was obsessed with murder, and began to prepare for death. But suddenly the robber began to cry and ask to be let in to repent. The monks did not immediately believe in the repentance of the murderer and robber, looking for an insidious catch in his actions. But Moses Murin stood at the gate on his knees for several days without food or food, and the monks let him in. Moses settled in a hermit's cell, where he prayed fervently and took in food no more than three hundred and fifty grams of dry bread and a glass of water a day.

He tirelessly read prayers, unquestioningly fulfilling all the instructions of his brothers, distinguished by meekness and asceticism. One day, his cell, which was located in a desert monastery, was attacked by four robbers. As it turned out, these were Moses’ former accomplices, but they did not immediately recognize him.

Moses Murin tied all four up like a sheaf and brought them to the monastery, saying that he would not take their lives. When the robbers realized that their former leader was in front of them and realized how much he had changed, they were shocked and also repented. Later they became the first disciples of Moses, taking monastic vows like him. Over the next fifteen years, Murin acquired 75 students and acquired the gift of foresight. Shortly before his death, the saint predicted an attack by dashing people on the monastery and persuaded most of the monks to leave for a safe place. Moses himself and his seven companions remained and suffered martyrdom at the hands of the murderers. After his death, he was canonized and recognized as a saint.

Life of Saint Boniface the Merciful

The future saint was born in the Tuscan region (Italy) in the 6th century. Since childhood, he was distinguished by a special love for the orphans, the poor and the wretched. If a boy saw that a passerby had no clothes, he would take them off and give them to someone in need. His mother, a poor widow, constantly scolded her son, who often returned home without outer (retinue) or lower (chiton) clothes.

One day, when a woman entered the granary, where a year's supply of bread was stored, she found no grain in it. It turned out that the young man distributed all the supplies to poor people. The mother cried bitterly, and the son, taking pity on her, asked her to leave the granary. Boniface fell to his knees and began to pray to the Lord. A miracle happened - the room was filled with wheat. Having thanked God, the young man called his mother, who, seeing the full granary, calmed down and glorified the Lord. Seeing God's help and the great faith of her son, the mother no longer forbade Boniface to provide all possible assistance to the poor and even began to allocate him funds for alms.

At one time, a fox got into the habit of stealing chickens from the mother of the future bishop. The young man, having learned that his mother was upset, hurried to the church and began to ask the Lord for help. Arriving home, he saw a fox with a live stolen chicken in its mouth. She let the bird go, and she died.

Bonifatius subsequently became a clergyman and was then sent to the city of Ferentin as a bishop. Presbyter Gaudentius, who saw them with his own eyes, testifies to the numerous miracles that occurred through the saint’s prayer.

Upon arrival in the Ferenti diocese, Saint Boniface found it in great poverty. Of the church property, the only source of income was the vineyard, the profit from which went to feed the clergy and the needs of the temple. But the bishop did not lose heart, but thanked the Lord for everything.

One day, a strong hail destroyed all the grapevines with berries so that only a few clusters remained. But when the grapes ripened, the bishop ordered the presbyter Constantius to prepare vessels for wine.

The man was surprised, but carried out the order of the saint. Saint Boniface collected the surviving grape brushes and took them to the winepress. He ordered everyone to leave except the boy, who began to squeeze the juice out of the berries. As soon as the new wine flowed from the winepress, the bishop blessed the brought vessels and soaked them in wine. And then, according to tradition, he ordered to call all the poor to give them wine from the new harvest.

The wine in the vessels increased so much that there was enough for all the people who came. And three days later, having prayed and opened the storehouse, Boniface and presbyter Constantius saw that all the vessels were filled with wine. The saint forbade the presbyter to talk about the miracle that had occurred, avoiding fame.

The bishop used wine to perform good deeds, so for drunkenness a prayer is read to Saint Boniface the Merciful, who never refused to help people in need.

Saint Boniface, despite his high position, was merciful and non-covetous all his life, wisely ruled the diocese and flock, teaching compassion and mercy.

During the life of the saint, through his prayers, the Lord worked miracles: money literally appeared out of thin air, the wine in the vessel that Boniface gave to the wanderers did not run out, the caterpillars that devoured the grapes left the vineyard. He was a saint and had the gift of clairvoyance (predicting the future).

Life

Saint Fanourius [1] probably lived in the 3rd century, although there is no reliable information about his origins and time of life. Everything we know about this saint is known from the Greek tradition.

So, in the 16th century, Muslims captured the island of Rhodes. The new ruler decided to restore the fortress walls damaged in the wars. Near the fortress there were several destroyed buildings, the stone from which was used to repair the walls. During restoration work, Muslims discovered the ruins of a small church, which later turned out to be very beautiful. Several icons were found on the floor, most of which were badly damaged. But one icon looked completely new, as if it had been painted on the same day. The local bishop Nil, who was called to examine the icon, said that it was an image of St. Fanurius. Actually, this image provided information about the life of the saint.

Fanurius was depicted as a young soldier holding a cross in his right hand, above which a candle was burning. Twelve marks are written around his image, telling about individual episodes of his life. So we learn that he was interrogated by a judge, beaten by soldiers, then lashed with whips and torn at his body with iron hooks. After that, the saint was locked in prison and again brought to trial before an official, and then they were burned with candles, thrown to wild animals, and placed under a huge stone. The following scenes show him standing in front of idols, holding burning coals in his hands. At that moment, behind the martyr stands a crying Satan, having suffered defeat from the saint. The last mark shows Fanurius in a fiery furnace, with his hands raised in prayer. From this it is clear that the saint endured great torment for his faith in Christ.

Bishop Neil asked the Muslim ruler of the island for permission to rebuild the church, but was refused. Then he went to the capital and received a decree allowing the temple to be restored.

At that time there was no Orthodox bishop in Crete. At that time the island was under the rule of Venice, so there was only a Latin bishop there. After the death of the Greek bishop, the Venetians did not allow him to ordain a successor, in the hope that the local population would soon convert to the Catholic faith. Those who wanted to take holy orders had to go to the island of Kythera.

One day, three young deacons went from Crete to Kythera to be ordained as a priest. On the way back they were captured by Muslims and brought to Rhodes to be sold into captivity. The priests mourned their fate for three days until they heard about the miracles of Saint Phanurius. They began to pray to the great martyr for deliverance from slavery. Soon each of them was sold to different owners. By the grace of God, they were all allowed to pray in the restored church of St. Phanourius. It so happened that they all arrived at the temple at the same time and prayed in front of the icon of the saint for deliverance from Muslim captivity. After the prayer, the priests each returned to their masters.

The following night, a miracle happened - Fanurius appeared in a dream to each of the three masters and ordered the priests to be freed so that they could serve God. If they refuse, the saint promised to punish them. Three Muslims did not attach any significance to their dreams, believing that they were some kind of witchcraft. They chained the slave priests and began to treat them even worse than before.

The next night, Fanurius again appeared in a vision to the three masters, and warned that if they disobeyed this time, they would see God’s power. The next morning, all the residents of the houses where the priests were located woke up blind and paralyzed, and at the same time experienced severe pain. They realized what they had to do and sent for the priests. They were asked if they could heal everyone. To this the priests replied that they would pray to God and He would manage everything.

After this, Fanurius again appeared to those Muslims and told them to send documents to the church giving the priests freedom, and if they did not do this, they would not be healed. The three owners sent letters to the church, where they were placed in front of the icon of St. Fanourius. As a result, all those suddenly struck were healed, and the priests went to Crete, taking with them a copy of the image of the great martyr.

Holy Martyr Phanurius

We first heard about the holy martyr Phanouria, revered and loved in Greece and little known in other countries, during our pilgrimage trip to the Orthodox shrines of Greece in June 2012.

Our guide Olga said that people turn to this saint in cases when they need to find a way out of a difficult situation, when something has gone missing, or when they need to find something or someone: a job, housing, a betrothed. She also said that this saint helps those who are looking for a path to spiritual ascent. With great joy we learned that in Greece there are many temples dedicated to this saint.

We were lucky enough to visit one of these temples in Loutraki. Together with Father Sergius, who led our group, we bowed to the icons of this saint and turned to him with prayer requests for help and intercession. In September 2015, we made a pilgrimage trip to the island of Corfu.

In the church in the name of the Nativity of the Prophet and Baptist of the Lord John the Baptist, we saw a large icon of St. Fanurius. The rector of the temple, Father Afanasy, told us how this saint is loved and revered in Greece. The icon of Saint Fanourius was found on the island of Rhodes in the 16th century during the restoration of the city walls destroyed during the siege.

A church and many icons were discovered under the rubble, most of which were so damaged that the faces and inscriptions were indistinguishable. One of the icons was in such good condition as if it were new. The name of the saint was indicated on the icon - Fanuriy, which means “revealing” (indicating, showing).

On the icon, Saint Fanurius is depicted as a young warrior, dressed in armor, holding a cross and a candle. Along the perimeter of the icon there are 12 stamps with images of the life and torment of the saint. The first mark shows Saint Phanurius confessing his faith in Christ before the Roman governor. The second shows how Fanurius is tortured and beaten with stones by soldiers.

In the third, Fanurius, thrown to the ground and praying for his tormentors, is beaten with sticks. On the fourth, Phanurius, who is in prison, is tortured with iron tools. On the fifth, the appearance of Saint Phanurius after torture before the ruler. On the sixth - the imprisonment of the saint. On the seventh - new tortures of the saint, who did not deviate from his faith in Christ.

On the eighth is Fanurius, crushed by a huge stone and surrounded by wild animals. On the ninth is Phanurius, who refuses to sacrifice to false gods-idols. On the tenth is Phanurius, who has won a spiritual victory and glorifies God. On the eleventh - the torment of Fanurius (his bones are broken). On the twelfth - the burning of Saint Fanourius at the stake.

We advise you to study the Prayers of the 40 Martyrs of Sewais

Judging by the nature of the torture to which he was subjected, Saint Phanurius accepted the crown of martyrdom in the first centuries of Christianity. Immediately after the discovery of the icon, the veneration of this saint began, and the temple of St. Fanurius was restored. It has survived to this day. Many miracles of Saint Fanourius are known. Those who turn to him for help very soon receive what they ask for, if this desire does not contradict God’s will. We are convinced of this. One of the pilgrims prayed for a meeting with her betrothed and after returning home she found her husband. I prayed for a spiritual guide, whom I had been looking for for several years, and soon found one. And some found lost things.

The memory of the holy martyr Fanurius is celebrated on the day of the discovery of the icon - September 9. On this day in Greece they bake “fanouropitas” (pies of St. Fanourius). These pies, similar in shape and size to artos, are cut into pieces after the service and distributed to the faithful. It is also customary to bake such pies on those days when a prayer service to this saint is ordered.

Prayer to the holy martyr Phanurius

O holy servant of God, martyr Fanurie! Having fought a good fight on earth, you received the crown of righteousness in Heaven, which the Lord has prepared for all who love Him. In the same way, looking at your holy image, we rejoice at the glorious end of your life and honor your holy memory.

You, standing before the Throne of God, accept our prayers and bring them to the All-Merciful God, to forgive us every sin and help us against the wiles of the devil, so that, having been delivered from sorrows, illnesses, troubles and misfortunes and all evil, we will live piously and righteously in the present We will be worthy through your intercession, even if we are unworthy, to see good on the land of the living, glorifying the One in His saints, the glorified God, the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen.

Saint Fanourius Day

Today, August 27, all Orthodox Greece celebrates the day of Saint Phanourius. Since this Saint is little known in other countries, I will tell you about him and the traditions associated with this day.

Saint Fanourius

The Holy Great Martyr Phanurius lived in the third century AD. This was the time of the most severe persecution of Christians. In general, little is known about his life - only that he accepted martyrdom for his faith in Christ.

They learned about Saint Fanourius only in the 16th century, when his icon was found on the Greek island of Rhodes (that’s why he is called Saint Fanourius of Rhodes). At that time, Rhodes (like all of Greece) was under the occupation of the Ottoman Turks. One day, Greek workers were clearing rubble near the fortress walls destroyed during the siege.

They found a small ancient Christian church. The icons in it were so damaged by time and dampness that they disintegrated into dust. But one of the icons was unharmed and looked completely new. It immediately became clear to the Orthodox workers that they were seeing a miracle.

The icon depicted a young man, and the signature indicated his name - Agios Fanouris. From this it followed that the young man was Greek by birth.

The workers took the icon to the Metropolitan of Rhodes, Nilos Diasporinus. The Metropolitan personally went to Constantinople to the Patriarch to ask the Sultan for permission to build a temple in honor of the new Saint. Permission was given. The temple built then in honor of Saint Fanourius still exists today.

This is one of the most famous attractions of Rhodes. The icon is considered miraculous. Usually Saint Fanurius is asked to help find lost things. And not just things. People turn to the Saint with prayer when they want to find work, housing, or health.

And young girls ask Saint Fanurius to help them find their betrothed.

The saint is always depicted holding a cross in his hands, on top of which a candle burns. The candle light is a symbol of hope for those asking.

I have not been to the island of Rhodes yet. But on our travels through mountainous Corinthia, we visited the Church of St. Fanourius, located on the shores of the picturesque Lake Doxa. We also have a church in Kalamata in honor of this saint.

Fanuropita - St. Fanourius' cake

There is a tradition - on the eve of August 27, a Lenten cake is baked, named “fanuropita” in honor of the Saint. However, it is also baked simply for tea on other days, especially during fasting. Greek orange cake fanuropita (Φανουρόπιτα) is one of the most popular recipes in traditional Greek cuisine .

I also baked fanuropita yesterday and will share its recipe. Its preparation will not take much time. We will need:

1 glass of sugar (a little more is possible);

1 glass of orange juice;

1/2 cup olive oil;

1 tablespoon of baking powder (you can use 1.5 teaspoons of soda);

150 grams of raisins;

50 grams of nuts or almonds;

zest of one orange, cinnamon, cloves (1/2 teaspoon each).

All ingredients are mixed in a bowl. I add enough flour to make a dough that resembles the consistency of thick sour cream. The dough is placed in a pan greased with olive oil and sprinkled with flour and baked at 180 degrees for approximately 49 minutes. The cooled cake can be sprinkled with powdered sugar.

Sincerely, Elena Mladinskaya, author of the blog “My Greek Garden.”

On September 2 (15), the Orthodox Church honors the memory of the holy wonderworker Mamant. Saint Mamant came from the Asia Minor province of Paphlagonia in the Roman Empire, from the city of Gangra. His Christian parents, Theodotus and Rufina, belonged to the upper class of patricians. When Emperor Aurelian (270-275)

) initiated a cruel persecution, they were captured among the first, and the son of Theodotus and Rufina saw the light in a gloomy and damp prison. The father did not have time to learn about the birth of his son, because before that he gave up his spirit to God. Rufina also followed her husband to the heavenly abodes, prayerfully entrusting the baby to the Lord.

God heard the dying prayer of Saint Rufina: the rich Christian widow Ammia buried the bodies of the martyrs with honor, and took the boy into her home and surrounded her with maternal care. She named the baby Mamant (in Syriac and Greek transcription Mamas) because the first word he uttered was “mother.” Saint Mamant grew up a good Christian.

He easily and willingly grasped reading and writing, was sensible beyond his years, prudent in his speeches and by personal example converted many of his peers to Christianity. This was reported to the ruler Democritus. Out of respect for the noble origin of the young man, Democritus did not dare to subject him to torture and sent him to the Emperor Aurelian.

He, first with affection and then with threats, intended to seduce Mamant into the pagan faith, but the saint fearlessly confessed himself to be a Christian and exposed the madness of the pagans who worship soulless idols. The enraged emperor subjected the young man to severe torture and, in the end, ordered him to be drowned.

But the Angel of the Lord saved Mamant and brought him to a high mountain near Caesarea, in the Roman province of Cappadocia. Obeying the will of God, the saint built a small church there and labored in strict abstinence and prayer. The saint lived there until he was fifteen years old. His interlocutors were lions and other wild animals.

Mamant ate the milk of wild goats and fallow deer. Soon the fame of the godly life of Saint Mamas spread throughout Caesarea. The concerned ruler sent a detachment of soldiers after him. Having met Saint Mamant on the mountain, the soldiers did not recognize him, mistaking him for a simple shepherd.

Then the saint invited them to the hut, gave them milk to drink and revealed his name himself, knowing that martyrdom for Christ awaited him. So fifteen-year-old Mamant surrendered himself into the hands of his tormentors and was brought to the court of the governor Alexander, who subjected him to sophisticated and lengthy torture. However, they did not break the Christian will of the saint.

When Saint Mamant was given to the beasts to be devoured, they did not touch him. Then one of the pagan priests struck him with a trident. Mortally wounded, Saint Mamant went outside the city. There, in a small stone cave, he betrayed his spirit to God, who called the holy martyr Mamant to the mountain villages. This happened in 275.

He was buried by believers at the place of his death. Soon, Christians who lived in Caesarea in Cappadocia and resorted to the martyr with their ailments and sorrows, began to receive gracious help from him.

Saint Basil the Great, who occupied the episcopal see in Caesarea Cappadocia in the middle of the 4th century, and probably knew from personal experience about the effective intercession of the martyr Mamant, buried not so long ago in his diocese, called on his flock with the words: “Remember the holy martyr: those who saw him in a vision, which of those living in this place has him as an assistant, which of those calling on his name he helped with his own deed, which of those who were lost in life he guided, whom he healed from illnesses, whose children, who had already died, he brought back to life again, whose life he continued “All of you, gathered together, bring praise to the martyr.”

Saint Mamant is one of the most revered saints, along with the Great Martyr George, the Apostle Barnabas, the Martyr Mina, the Martyr Marina and the First Martyr Thekla, in Cyprus.

This is, first of all, due to the fact that, according to Cypriot legend, the venerable body of Saint Mamant was already in Byzantine times transported from the shores of Asia Minor to Cyprus and buried in the diocese of Morphou.

At this place the temple of St. Mamant was built, where his holy relics rested. Now this temple is located in territories occupied by the Turks since 1974.

Today, in different parts of the island, you can hear many stories about Saint Mamanta from local residents. Let us cite one legend that arose during the years of Turkish rule on the island (1570-1878). It probably served as the basis for the rather later iconography of Saint Mamantes, sitting on a lion and holding a lamb in his arms.

Tradition says that once Saint Mamant, a poor hermit, lived in a cave in the diocese of Morphou in Cyprus. When he, like all residents of Cyprus, was forced by the Turkish authorities to pay tribute, he refused. Then he was taken to the governor, the representative of the Ottoman Empire, on the island. On the way, Saint Mamant saw the following scene: a lion hunting a lamb.

The saint nodded to the lion, commanding him to release the lamb. He showed immediate obedience and followed the saint himself. Tired of the long journey, Saint Mamant took the lamb in his arms, sat on the lion, and so continued his way to the governor.

The governor, seeing the touching picture of Mamanta, sitting on a lion with a lamb in his hands, respectfully released the saint in good health and freed him from the obligation to pay tribute to the Ottoman Empire.

Great is the glory of Saint Mamant in Cyprus. Because of the many miracles he performed, the Cypriot chronicler Leontius Macheras exclaimed: “And before my death I will not have time to describe all his benefits!”

They pray for relief from taxes, loans, debts, and unfair oppression by the authorities.

TROPARION, TONE 4.

Thy martyr, Lord, Mammoth, in his suffering received an imperishable crown from Thee, our God: having Thy strength, overthrow the tormentors, crush the demons of weak insolence. Save his souls with our prayers.

KONDAC, VOICE 2.

You have appeared as a bright star, a charming one of the world. You proclaim the Sun of Christ with your dawns, passion-bearer Mammoth, and you extinguished all the charm, but you give us light, praying unceasingly for all of us.

GREATNESS.

We magnify you, the passion-bearing saint of Mammoth, and we honor your honest suffering, which you suffered for Christ.

Read 3 times a day for 40 days. And go to confession and communion.
