Life of the Divine Saint
Little John was born in Antioch. His parents were known as nobles - his father served as an officer in the Byzantine army, and his mother was a highly educated Christian. She raised the child without the participation of her father, who, to her great regret, reposed in the Lord shortly after the birth of her son.

Despite her youth (she was 22 years old at that time), the woman decided to devote her life to raising a child, so she did not remarry.
The future saint received an excellent education, and upon completion of his studies he became a lawyer. But while working, he learned about the downside of his chosen profession. The field of lawyers is mired in lies, crimes, envy, and irreconcilable hostility.
John, not wanting to become like his colleagues, dreamed of joining a monastery, but his mother prevented the desire of his only son. She really wanted him to become a prototype of his father - a godly Christian and take the corresponding status in society. John yielded to his mother and remained in the world, studied the Holy Scriptures and received a theological education.
He especially loved the epistles of the Apostle Paul, and a little later he wrote interpretations of them.
Serving God
In 369, the young man received the Sacrament of Holy Baptism.
Five years later, his mother died and after her death, John took monastic vows. But from long and strict fasts the monk suffered from stomach diseases and he left the monastery walls, returning to his homeland.
He was soon elevated to the rank of deacon, and later was ordained a priest and began to preach the Word of God. A few years later he was appointed Archbishop of Constantinople.
Despite the highest church rank and the chic of metropolitan life, the cleric remained faithful to God. He continued to preach, denounced the capital's clergy for stinginess, denied pagan amusements, debauchery and drunkenness, and called on rich citizens to help the poor.
Saint John Chrysostom, Archbishop of Constantinople
One day, the wife of Emperor Arkady Eudoxia ordered the confiscation of property from the family of a disgraced nobleman. The saint stood up to protect the family, and the empress harbored a grudge against the preacher.
Her anger flared up more and more, moreover, ill-wishers slandered the saint, as a result of which an order was issued for the execution of Chrysostom, but was later replaced by exile. The parishioners came to the defense of their beloved shepherd, and that same night a terrible earthquake occurred in the city. Many, including Eudoxia, considered him prophetic.
The Empress urgently sent a message to the exile asking him to forgive her and return. But her Fear of God did not last long - a new denunciation of the saint again aroused the queen’s anger and John was expelled from the city to the remote village of Kukuz (the territory of present-day Transcaucasia). Along the way, the saint's strength left him and he fell off his feet.
About spiritual life in Orthodoxy:
- Why do you need a spiritual mentor?
- How to fast before communion
- About the Sacrament of Confession
At night, John had a vision of Basilisk, who foretold the theologian the date of his death. The next day, on the way to the place of exile, the great preacher was overtaken by a severe attack of fever and the guard ordered him to return to church. There Chrysostom asked for a white vestment, took communion of the Holy Mysteries of Christ and prayed fervently. At the end of the prayer, the saint became very weak and slowly sank to the floor.
Thus he ended his earthly life.

Holy Fathers on Prayer
A long feat in prayer and considerable time are required in order to find another kind of heartfelt heaven, where Christ dwells, in an uncold state of mind (St. John of Carpathia).

Prayer 8, to our Lord Jesus Christ
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, for the sake of Your most honorable Mother, and Your disembodied Angels, Your Prophet and Forerunner and Baptist, the God-speaking Apostles, the bright and victorious martyrs, the reverend and God-bearing fathers, and all the saints through the prayers, deliver me from my present demonic situation. To her, my Lord and Creator, do not want the death of a sinner, but as if he were converted and live, grant me conversion, the accursed and unworthy; take me away from the mouth of the destructive serpent, who yawns to devour me and bring me to hell alive. To her, my Lord, is my consolation, Who for the sake of the accursed one has clothed himself in corruptible flesh, pluck me from accursedness, and grant consolation to my more accursed soul. Plant in my heart to do Thy commandments, and forsake evil deeds, and receive Thy blessedness: for in Thee, O Lord, have I trusted, save me.
Translation:
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, for the sake of the prayers of Your Most Honest Mother, Your disembodied Angels, as well as Your Prophet Forerunner and Baptist, the preaching apostles, the bright and victorious martyrs, the reverend and God-bearing fathers and all the saints, deliver me from the present attack of demons. Oh, my Lord and Creator, who does not desire the death of a sinner, but awaits his conversion and life, grant conversion to me, the accursed and unworthy; take me out of the mouth of the destructive serpent, eager to devour me and bring me alive to hell. Oh, my Lord, my consolation, for the sake of me, fallen, clothed in corruptible flesh, deliver me from misfortune and give consolation to my soul, worthy of regret. Inspire my heart to fulfill Your commands and leave evil deeds and receive Your blessedness, for in You, Lord, I trust, save me.

Prayer of St. John Chrysostom according to the number of hours in the day
7. Lord, give me humility, chastity and obedience (Lord, give me humility, chastity and obedience).
Humility
Humility is called the greatest wealth that every believer can and should strive to possess. You can find it only as you draw closer to God and bring your life into line with His commandments. A person who has acquired this virtue attributes all his labors to God, and not to his own efforts. The Lord, turning to His disciples, said: “So you too, when you have fulfilled everything commanded you, say: “We are worthless servants, because we did what we had to do” (Luke 17:10).
Father,” one brother of the great elder Anthony once asked, “why don’t you reject the praises that are sung to you?”
“Because we reject praise not out of humility, but in order to receive it doubly,” Anthony the Great answered him.
Humility, according to Archimandrite Thaddeus Vitovnitsky, opens up to us a completely different understanding of life, free from the laws of the material world: “We think differently. Everything around us shines, everything is sweet to us, everything is good for us, because all this is loved by God. We are His creatures, and everything that is created belongs to Him. He created all this for His own sake, so that we could be participants in His divine love, divine peace and joy.” Only humility reveals to us the understanding that true love for God and neighbor is love devoid of egocentrism and self-love.
A young novice, who had recently entered the monastery, once saw the abbot, sitting on the threshold of his cell, cleaning his shoes.
“Father,” the young man was surprised, “do you clean your shoes yourself?” But why?
“Since I was elected abbot, the brothers have not allowed me to clean other people’s property,” he answered.
Chastity
Chastity translated from Greek means “prudence.” In the deepest sense, a chaste person is an integral and strong personality, turned to an inner spiritual life, free from false passions and hobbies. Maintaining chastity is dictated by the desire to keep one’s body pure, which, according to the Apostle Paul, is the temple of the Holy Spirit: “Do you not know that you are the temple of God, and the Spirit of God lives in you? If anyone destroys the temple of God, God will punish him, for the temple of God is holy; and this temple is you” (1 Cor. 3:16-17).
A grandson came to visit his grandfather in the village: “Grandfather, I like everything about you, but the girls are all in long skirts and headscarves - it’s painfully boring.” Grandfather took two candies out of his pocket. One was in a wrapper, the other was without. - Which one will you choose, grandson? — In a candy wrapper, of course. - And why? - She's cleaner. - Well, it’s the same with girls.
Chastity, according to St. Ephraim the Syrian, consists not only in abstaining from fornication and carnal pleasures, but also in being free from other passions.
A certain man named Thaddeus decided to prove to his fellow villagers that he could become a great ascetic. To do this, he retired to the mountains and began to exhaust himself with fasting alone. However, a month later Thaddeus returned. And when fellow villagers asked what he had been doing all this time, he replied:
“I killed, I stole, I lied, I slandered people, I extolled myself, I committed adultery, I set houses on fire. - How can this be if you were there alone? - Yes, I was alone in body, but in soul and heart I was always among people, and what I could not do with my hands, feet, tongue and body, I did mentally in my soul.
Obedience
Obedience is called the mother of virtues; wings that lift us to God. The Monk Paisius the Svyatogorets says that obedience is the key to the doors of heaven. But on the condition that it is a consequence of a person’s conscious and voluntary choice, and not simple “soldiering,” that is, forced submission and prayer under pressure.
Submission does not consist in outward obedience, but in the joyful submission of one’s mind to the spirit of the elder. The fruits of obedience cannot arise out of nothing, but are the natural result of a difficult and painstaking struggle with one’s passionate desires and attachments.
One day the Monk John Kolov came to his mentor. He, seeing John, took a dry tree, planted it in the ground and said to his disciple:
“Here’s your obedience: water this tree every day until it bears fruit.”
John fulfilled the will of his teacher and watered the planted tree for two years.
In the third year it came to life and gave its fruit. Then the elder picked this fruit, brought it to the church and said to the brethren:
- Come and taste this fruit of obedience.
8. Lord, give me patience, generosity and meekness (Lord, give me patience, generosity and meekness).
Patience
Patience is a virtue that is very difficult to acquire in this rapidly changing world, a world full of temptations, enticements, trials, and problems. Elder Paisiy Svyatogorets says that patience, if a person shows it, puts everything in its place. It is the lack of patience that turns our life into torment and deprives us of peace, and its lack testifies to the lack of hope in God in us.
- Father, I really don’t know what to do? How much I pray for my son, but he remains an unbeliever...
- My daughter, did you pray with patience?
- Surely!
– Now pray with patience!
Patience is not only the most powerful medicine for various troubles, but also serves as a reliable support for other virtues. Only the patient one achieves every virtue, only the patient one is able to extinguish the flame of any quarrel and prevent the fire of enmity and hatred from flaring up:
“Long-suffering is a wonderful gift, because it drives out hot temper, anger and contempt, and brings the soul into a peaceful state” (St. Ephraim the Syrian).
One scandalous woman had a strong dislike for her neighbor. She used any excuse to argue with him. One day, because of some trifle, she made a fuss and screamed so much that the whole street could hear her.
Sometimes she would say insulting words to her neighbor, but he would silently walk around his yard, minding his daily business. Everyone around him was amazed at his patience:
- How can you bear all this so calmly? - they asked him.
“Nothing,” answered the imperturbable neighbor, “the person will speak out and calm down.”
Generosity
Generosity is a state of the human soul, which includes such qualities as: meekness, mercy, compassion, patience, selflessness, nobility, love. Christian generosity is not limited to the framework of human understanding of compassion and justice, since it does not divide people into friends and strangers, into those who are worthy and who are unworthy of our sympathy. It does not reason, it acts instantly, trying not to miss the opportunity given by God to express itself, even at the cost of its own peace and well-being.
In the city of Alexandria there lived a rich and generous merchant named Alexander. He used to give generous monthly alms to the elderly and the poor. But one day misfortune befell him. Evil people slandered Alexander, and he lost all his property due to a false denunciation.
The beggar-lover from the rich man became poor, and the devil rejoiced that he would have nothing with which to give alms. But the friend of the poor and in poverty did not stop helping them every month from the last. So a month passed, another passed, and a third came. The beggars came again and said to the servant of the mercy:
“Tell your master to give us alms today, as before.”
The slave went and said, and also added on his own:
- What are you giving away, the last thing you will live on?
The gentleman answered:
“After all, if we don’t help them, the wrath of the Lord will befall us, and therefore, while we are alive, we will share with them the last penny.”
The Lord soon looked upon His servant and, for the sake of his mercy, delivered the merchant from unjust suffering. All his estates were returned to Alexander, and the enemies who slandered and ruined him were severely punished.
Meekness
Meekness is a state of mind free from such movements as hatred, anger, condemnation and resentment. A meek person is a person who is devoted to God and finds consolation in Him in moments of trial and dishonor. This virtue teaches, affirms and helps a Christian to grow in patience and love. St. Ephraim the Syrian, speaking about meekness, writes:
“The meek, even if offended, rejoices; if he is offended, he thanks; those who are angry are tamed with love; taking blows, he doesn’t hesitate; when they quarrel with him, he is calm; when (he) is subjugated, he has fun... rejoices in humiliation, does not boast of his merits, is at peace with everyone... is alien to guile, does not know envy.”
A certain elder said: if anyone remembers someone who insulted, or blamed, or caused harm to him; he must remember him as a doctor sent from Christ, and must consider him a benefactor; and to be offended by this is a sign of a sick soul. For if you were not sick, you would not suffer.
You should rejoice over such a brother, because through him you will recognize your illness, you should pray for him and accept everything from him as a healing medicine sent from the Lord. If you are offended against him, then you forcefully say to Christ: I do not want to accept Your healing, but I want to rot in my wounds.
9. Lord, plant in me the root of good, Thy fear in my heart (Lord, plant in me the root of good - the fear of You in my heart).
Unclean thoughts, according to Abba Thalasius, melt away from the fear of God, like wax from the face of fire. The fear of God is a reliable means of combating passions and any sinful impulses, since constant remembrance of the hellish torments awaiting unrepentant sinners encourages us not to succumb to momentary temptations and temptations.
“You must always have the fear of God before your eyes, and all the most violent passions will be silent. Living without fear, one cannot accomplish anything noble and amazing” (St. John Chrysostom).
When the time came for Abba Arseny to die, the brothers who were with him saw that he was crying.
Then they asked the elder:
- Father! Are you really afraid too?
He answered them:
- Yes, I'm afraid! The fear I now feel has been with me since the time I became a monk.
The feeling of fear of God as a Judge who knows all the unsightly aspects of our life should gradually move to a new, more perfect level. This level of fear of God should no longer be based on fear of punishment, but on love for God:
“Just as it is impossible to cross a large sea without a ship and a boat, so no one can achieve love without fear” (St. Isaac the Syrian).
It is the love of God that in this case is the driving force that does not allow anything unclean to find a place in us. Any sin, even the most insignificant, is now perceived as a real possibility of losing God’s presence in our lives, His blessing and support.
10. Lord, grant me to love You with all my soul and thoughts and to do Your will in everything (Lord, grant me to love You with all my soul and thoughts and to do Your will in everything).
The Lord, when asked what the greatest commandment in the law is, answered: “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind: this is the first and greatest commandment; the second is similar to it: love your neighbor as yourself; on these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets” (Luke 22:34-40). Love for God cannot be described in words, since any, even the most magnificent and refined turns of speech, are not able to demonstrate its presence in us as clearly as real deeds and actions.
Saint John Chrysostom teaches that God requires from us love, which is manifested primarily in deeds:
“To say that we love, but not to do what is characteristic of those who love, is ridiculous not only in relation to God, but also in relation to people.”
The best proof of love for God is keeping His commandments and living in accordance with the teachings of the Gospel. One of the fundamental criteria for the presence of love for God in us is the attitude towards our neighbors: “Whoever says: “I love God,” and hates his brother, is a liar: for he who does not love his brother, whom he sees, how can he love God, Whom does not see?" (1 John 4:20).
One man came to the elder and said:
– I want to find the way to God. Help me!
He looked at him carefully and asked:
- Tell me first, have you loved anyone?
The guest replied:
– I am not interested in worldly affairs, love and so on. I want to come to God!
– Think again, please, have you loved a woman, a child, or at least someone in your life?
“I already told you that I am not an ordinary layman, but a person who wants to know God.” Everything else doesn't interest me.
The elder answered sadly:
“Then it’s impossible.” First you have to know what it's like to really truly love someone. This will be the first step to God. You ask me about the last step, but you haven’t stepped on the first yet.
11. Lord, protect me from certain people, and demons, and passions, and from all other inappropriate things (Lord, protect me from evil people, and demons, and passions, and from all inappropriate things).
In order to recognize our own weakness and infirmity, it is enough for us to face the slightest ailment, everyday problem or the unfair, as it often seems to us, attitude of others. When faced with such problems every day, we must always remember that we have a Higher Helper, whom neither people who have deviated from the right path, nor demons who kindle various passions and vices in us are able to resist.
All the evil of the world, even if it falls on us overnight, will not be able to cause us any harm if we do not lose heart, but trust in God. “All power comes from you,” says St. Isaac the Syrian about God, “Through you the valiant conquer. You raise them to the heights of a good life. Your love strengthens the weak and timid. And my time, Lord, does not pass in vain.”
One day an old hermit fell ill. He did not have anyone with him to serve him, and therefore he got up from his bed and ate what he could find in his cell. Many days passed in this way, and no one visited him during this time.
After thirty days, the Lord sent His Angel to serve the elder. Another seven days passed like this. Then the fathers remembered him and said: “Let's go visit the old man, maybe he is sick.” They came and knocked on the door, at which time the Angel retreated from the patient. The elder shouted: “Brothers, get out of here.” Then the brethren took the doors off their hinges, entered and asked: “Why did you shout?” The hermit answered: “I languished in illness for thirty days, and no one visited me. For seven days now an Angel sent by the Lord has been serving me, and when you came, he left me.” Having said this, the hermit peacefully departed to the Lord. The brothers were amazed and glorified God, saying: “The Lord does not forsake those who trust in Him.”
12. Lord, consider that you do as you will, that your will be done in me, a sinner, for blessed are you forever. Amen. (Lord, You know that You can do whatever You want - Your will be done on me, a sinner, for You are blessed forever. Amen).
The prayer of St. John Chrysostom, according to the number of hours in the day, ends with words expressing our readiness to follow the will of God in everything, leading us along the path of salvation. According to the Monk Paisius the Holy Mountain, a person who has managed to completely trust God lives according to His plan. It is our “self,” according to the elder, that throws us back and does not allow us to move forward spiritually, since it interferes with the action of Divine mercy:
“We do not understand to what extent the Lord is powerful and merciful. We do not allow Him to be Master over us, to do all our affairs, and that is why we suffer.”
An old forester was walking through the forest. As he walked, he almost cried. And this is not the case in his life, and this is not like that, but he tries, he works tirelessly all his life. But in the end there are continuous illnesses and sorrows!
I wanted to turn to God and ask why He did this to him? But suddenly he sees a woodpecker in a tree. He sits, knocks on the trunk with his sharp beak - only the shot goes through the whole forest.
- Listen! - the tree begged. - It hurts! Enough! “If I fly away,” the woodpecker objected, “then you will be eaten by the larvae that I take out, and you will die.” So just be patient! I'm treating you!
The forester heard this and smiled. And he did not turn to God with the question of why his life was so painful.
For what, he himself knew - for sins. And for what - only now I understand. For his own good.

The great theologian John Chrysostom: powerful prayers
The great saint John Chrysostom said that there are no obstacles to prayer. Any place and time will be acceptable if you have the right mindset. Christians pray to this saint for help and support in their endeavors.
John Chrysostom was born in Antioch around 347. He turned to the Holy Scripture early and diligently studied it, despite the general fascination with paganism. John began to preach the Word of God under the mentorship of experienced bishops. Subsequently, when he was considered worthy of a church position, John and his associate withdrew into the desert to continue their enlightenment without hindrance. He wrote many works devoted to the righteous Christian life. Later, the flock to whom he preached the Word of God gave him the nickname “Chrysostom” for his ability to kindle sincere faith in the hearts of people.
Short prayers of John Chrysostom are very popular among Orthodox Christians. Before starting any business, at a time when the support of Higher powers is needed, prayers read at home require only one thing: the appropriate attitude. They help you gather your thoughts together and focus on your problems and affairs. The meaning of prayers is not in memorizing the right words, but sincere faith and the desire to take the righteous path under the all-seeing gaze of God.
Short prayers of John Chrysostom
These prayers are a kind of mood for the whole day, which helps to focus on what is important. This is also the support of the Higher Powers, which is sometimes so necessary in times of difficulties and difficult choices.
“Lord, grant me your support and do not deprive me of Your blessings.”
“God, deliver me from the torment that torments me.”
“Lord, forgive me, a sinner, and guide me on the true path.”
“Lord God, deliver me from alien thoughts and envy.”
“Lord, help me overcome difficulties.”
“Lord, do not deprive me of support and support in the difficult hour of my ordeal.”
Any task supported by a short prayer is completed much faster and brings much more joy. With God's word and faith in justice, life plays with new colors, and self-confidence grows.
Prayer to the theologian John in difficult times
“Great Saint John Chrysostom. You accepted great gifts and talents from our God and believed in his power. He multiplied all his talents and used himself for the benefit of everyone. People still honor your sermons and listen to your righteous and correct words. Your teaching is for the benefit of every believer and lover of God. We, sinners, turn to you in prayer to gather our feelings together and save us from the enmity and suffering of the envious. To you, Saint of God, we offer our prayers in piety and faith in the highest justice. Pray to our Lord not to turn away from his lost children, but guide us on the true path, strengthened by faith. Amen".
Prayer for protection from anger and envy
“Oh Great Saint John! The servant of God (name) is calling to you. Through your efforts and labors for the good of the true faith, you have acquired gifts and goodness for yourself. He preached the Word of God and kindled sincere faith in the hearts of people. I pray to you, protector and beloved. Don’t let evil intentions overcome the brightness that lives in everyone’s soul. Direct malicious thoughts away from me so that human envy, which devours souls, does not touch me. Deliver my troubled soul from doubts. And I will pray to the Lord for omnipotent protection. Amen".
Heavenly forces will never leave without the protection of someone who sincerely believes. There is a bright fire in everyone’s soul that needs to be fed with prayers. Fill every day with the joy of life.
