Usually, after pronouncing the words Auzu billahi mina shaytani rajim, they say “Bismillahi Rahmani Rahim.” The meaning is translated from Arabic something like this: O Allah, protect me from the machinations of the accursed Satan or “I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed (stoned) Shaitan.” Pronouncing the words Auzu billahi minash-shaitanir-rajim is a recognition of the Omnipotence of Allah, a request for help, a weapon of protection available to believers from all dangers. Only the Almighty Lord can protect believers from the machinations of the shaitan; by uttering the words of istiazi, a Muslim testifies that he is helpless in front of obvious and invisible enemies.

Auzu billahi minash-shaitan-nir-rajim: istiaza
Istiaza becomes the first step in turning to the Almighty for those Muslims who want to read the Koran. When pronounced, the soul is filled with goodness. Istiaza serves as a kind of filter for empty and negative words. Each of us needs to cleanse our speech, which is polluted by ugly phrases and sometimes ungodly expressions.
Istiaza is a worship service that opens the gates for both God-fearing Muslims living in taqwa and sinners who repent of their errors. Istiaza corresponds to the command of Allah as stated in the Holy Quran:
“When you read the Koran, then seek refuge from the stoned devil with Allah” (Surah an-Nakhl, 16/98).
Auzu billahi mina shaytani rajim - istiaza - one of the three messages that Gabriel (alaihis salam) brought to the Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). They also include “Bismillah” and five verses of Surah “Alyak”. Auzu means: “Oh my Lord, I take refuge in Your protection.” This phrase must be understood as a contract concluded between the Creator and His servant:
“Oh, sons of Israel! Remember the mercy I showed you. Be faithful to the covenant that [you] made to Me, and I will be faithful to the covenant that I made to you. And only fear Me” (Surah al-Baqarah, 2/40).
By pronouncing auz, a Muslim testifies that he keeps his promise to be a slave of the Almighty, despite his shortcomings, and therefore resorts to His help and asks Him for forgiveness.
The isthiasis formula consists of three parts:
Syfatiye says: “I seek the protection of Allah from His wrath for the pleasure of my Creator.” Afalie means: “I seek Your forgiveness from Your wrath.” Zatiya means: “I seek Your protection from everything predestined.”
Who is Satan?
Before committing the sin of disobedience to Allah, Iblis was captured by the angels as a young genie, raised and trained by them. After the creation of the first man Adam, Allah commanded the angels to bow to him, but Iblis refused. He disobeyed his Lord stubbornly and arrogantly, considering himself superior to man. This indicates a serious illness in his soul - narcissism and pride. We ask Allah to save us from this.
Iblis not only believed, he knew about the existence of Allah, recognized His power and swore to obey. But this did him no good. Stubbornness, pride, arrogant behavior, refusal to obey His will led to the fact that he received the nickname Shaitan and was rejected.
The word shaitan comes from the root word “shatan”, which means “distant, unclean and base” and is interpreted as an unholy soul that is removed from Allah. Because this damned creature is far from the truth, as well as from virtue and everything in which there is good. Shaitan is the general name for a rebellious entity, whether it belongs to a jinn or a human. Whereas Iblis is a proper name belonging to a genie who showed disobedience to Allah and deceived Adam (peace be upon him) into committing an offense for which people were thrown to the earth.
Throughout all the centuries of human existence, Iblis has been trying to sow discord and decay on earth. To lead Muslims astray from the true faith, to push them to commit sins. And he does this not alone, but with his assistants.
“And to those who turn away from the remembrance of the Merciful, We will assign the shaitan, and he will become his companion.” (Sura Decoration:36)
But Allah did not leave his creations defenseless against evil and the instigations of the devils.
Protection from Satan
Protection from Shaitan is a topic that receives much attention in the Holy Quran and Sunnah. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:
“I was sent as a guide to the straight path. I have nothing except hidayat (true path). Iblis was created to tempt. He has nothing but delusion."
In order to protect against the harm of Satan, a person must turn as often as possible for help to Allah, Who created Iblis himself and his minions.
Allah Almighty said:
“And if an evil suggestion comes to you from the shaitan, then seek refuge with Allah. Verily, He is the Hearer, the Knower.” (Surah Explanation 41:36)
To do this, you need to read the prayer in these words:
The words auzu billahi minashshaytaanir rajim are words that are given as prayers in the Quran itself:
“When you read the Quran, seek refuge with Allah from the accursed shaitan. (Surah an-Nakhl: 98)
Auzu billahi mina shaytani rajim translated means - I seek protection from Allah from the damned shaitan, deprived of His mercy. Apart from the protection of Allah, there is no way to escape from tricks and deceptions.
And say: “O my Lord! I seek refuge in you from the evil thoughts of the devils; and I seek refuge in you, my Lord, from their presence. (Surah al-Muminun, 23: 97-8)
When to pronounce auz billah
It is obligatory to recite the dua “auzu billahi minash shaitanir rajim” before reading the Koran and in prayer after the prayer “sana” before the surah “Al-Fatiha” in the first rak’ah.
Whenever a person wants to protect himself from the machinations of Satan, he must seek protection from the Creator. And this is a sunnah (desirable action) in the following cases:
Hadiths
Bismillahi Rahmani Rahim.
A Muslim who pronounces istiaz must know and understand these three formulas. At the same time, it is also necessary to know other facets and depths of auzu worship. In one of the hadiths recorded in Sahih, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) pointed out the forms of appeal to the Almighty: “Oh, my Allah, I resort from Your anger to Your pleasure, from punishment to Your forgiveness, from You - to you. O my Lord, I am not able to praise You as You can do It Yourself” (Muslim, “Salat”, 222).
Mu'mins who have acquired a high spiritual degree resort to the protection of the Almighty so that He preserves the understanding of the essence of things revealed to them. Shaitan fears the istiaz of sincere believers most of all. Hasan Basri once said: “If someone says istiaz with soul and with the feeling that the Almighty is watching him, then the power of this worship will increase many times over. After which three hundred curtains are formed between the Muslim and the shaitan, each of which is like the distance between earth and sky.”
Ibn Abbas told how one day the Prophet (PBUH) came out of the mosque and saw Iblis. He asked: “What brings you here?”
- The Almighty sent me here so that you could ask me a few questions.
- “Oh, damned one, why are you preventing my ummah from performing prayers with jamaat? - asked the Prophet (pbuh).
- “When your ummah gets up for collective prayer, I am seized with a fever, and I cannot recover until the believers go home,” Iblis replied.
- Why do you block us from reading dua and gaining knowledge?
- I go blind and deaf when Muslims turn to Allah. And this scourge does not go away if they do not stop praying and studying,” said the shaitan.
- Why are you stopping my ummah from reading the Quran? - the Prophet (PBUH) asked a new question.
- When they pick up the Book, I melt like wax and am afraid to disappear.
- Why are you stopping my ummah from jihad?
- When Muslims go out for jihad or go for Hajj, my feet are in shackles until they return. And when believers give sadaka, my head hurts as if it’s ready to split,” Iblis admitted.
Once the Prophet was asked a question about waswas - the instigations of the shaitan. He replied: “A thief will never enter an empty house. Waswas testifies to a person’s sincere faith.”
Billahi (Lafsu Jalal) (I resort to Allah) - Allah is the greatest and most general name of the Almighty, which is inherent only to Him and is not given to any of His creations. This name absorbs all the divine attributes and symbols and means the true Creator, who has qualities not inherent in any of the things He created.
The word “shaitan” is the singular form of “shaittin” (deprived of good, shatana). Iblis was named so because of his disobedience to the Almighty. The same is said about any jinn, person or animal who rebels against Allah. Before the curse, the shaitan had the name Azazil or Nail. Ibn Abbas emphasized: at the moment of manifestation of disobedience to the Creator, the shaitan was cursed and became an outcast.
Shaitan is also called rajim - distant from blessings, humiliated, cursed, driven away with stones. This concept comes from the word “rajm” (stone). Muslims call the one pelted with stones rajim (Qurtubi, 1, 304-305).

Virtues of Bismillahi Rahmani Rahim (Basmaly)
Before the advent of Islam, the Arabs began all important matters by pronouncing the name of one or another idol. To eradicate this practice, the first words of revelation that Jibril, peace be upon him, conveyed to our Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, were:
اقْرَأْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ
“Recite in the name of your Lord.”
And in many hadiths it is reported that the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, began all important matters by pronouncing the name of Allah. At first he pronounced the formula “Bismika Allahumma” (“In Your name, Allah ...”), and later he began to say “Bismillahi-r-Rahmani-r-Rahim”. From that time on, it became the sunnah to pronounce the basmala.
The sunnah is to recite the basmala before the start of every action permitted by Sharia: before eating, drinking, ablution, entering a vehicle, before turning on the light, closing the door and other actions, even the most ordinary everyday ones.
By commanding a person to begin everything he does in the name of Allah, Islam directs his entire life towards Allah, so that the believer renews his devotion to Allah with every step and every deed. Thus, all daily actions of a person, every movement and gesture, become acts of worship for which a Muslim will receive a reward in eternal life. Just a few words - and what a powerful effect! Basmala is like a chemical reaction that transforms the earthly (dunya) into the sacred (din). At first glance, it seems as if a non-believer eats and drinks exactly the same as a Muslim, but by saying the basmala before eating, the Muslim thereby admits that he does not have the power to create even the small piece of food that he puts in his mouth. It was Allah Almighty who gave it to him, just like this sip of water.
The role of prayer in Islam
The Arabic dialect is difficult to accurately convey in Cyrillic. The words of the prayer “Bismillahi Rahmani Rahim” in the original also have a guttural sound “R” between them. It is added to separate concepts.
The meaning of this prayer is: “Oh, Allah, You are merciful and kind to us all.” There are many more translations of the phrase, but the meaning does not change.
From there they begin turning to God. According to the laws of the Koran, a believer must turn to Allah before each of his actions to show that everything is done in gratitude for his mercy. A Muslim must do as many good deeds as possible for his creator. This not only gives them a sacred Blessing. The more this prayer is repeated throughout life, the greater the chances of going to Heaven and a happy life after death.
If a Muslim does not turn to Allah for blessing before each of his actions, then regardless of the good, he will not be able to use it at the Judgment, therefore most believers prefer to say “Bismillahi Rahmani Rahim” before each planned action.
Full text and translation
Muslims pronounce the first words many times a day, but in order for the grace of Allah to descend upon them, they need to repeat the sacred texts in full. They do this five times during the day. In every country where Islam is the national religion, every few hours all Muslims are invited to the mosque. There they pray in specially designated places.
They learn the text of the prayer “Bismillahi Rahmani Rahim” from childhood, and therefore do not need written prompts, but those people who are just beginning to get acquainted with the world of Islam can use notes on sheets of paper. This is not reprehensible. When you repeat a prayer several times a day, it will be remembered very quickly.
The full text of this prayer is:
“Bismillahir rahmanir rahim! Al-hamdu lil-llayahi robil yaalamiin. Ar-rokhmaanir-rohiim. Maaliki yaumid-diin. Iyaaka nabudu ya iyaaka nastaiin. Syrootal-laziina an'amta aleikhim. Goiril-Magduubi galeihim wa lad-doolliin!”
There is a translation into Russian. It is needed to understand the meaning of prayer and offer sacred words with awareness. For those who find it difficult to read Arabic, it is recommended to use the translation:
“I take refuge in Allah to avoid the accursed Satan. In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds, the Gracious, the Merciful, the King on the Day of Judgment! We only worship You and only ask You for help! Guide us on the path of those whom You have bestowed with blessings, those who are under wrath and those who are not lost.”
A true Muslim will never begin prayer without first cleansing his body, so they wash themselves thoroughly and only after that can they turn to the Almighty. In total, prayers in Islam are read 5 times a day. The first one is before dawn, at 5 o’clock in the morning. If you get up early, you can receive grace from the Almighty. After this, you are allowed to return to bed and sleep for a few hours.
The names of the Almighty are “Allah”, “ar-Rahman” and “ar-Rahim”
There are three names of the Lord in the basmala:
- Allah;
- ar-Rahman;
- ar-Rahim.
About the name “Allah”, Imam Abu Abdullah al-Sanusi, may Allah have mercy on him, writes as follows:
“Allah is the proper name of God, whose Existence is obligatory from the point of view of reason and who is worthy of worship.”
Imam Ibn Kathir writes: “Allah is the proper name of the Lord. There is an opinion that it is the “greatest name” (al-ism al-azam), for it is this name that is described by all the qualities. Allah Almighty says:
هُوَ اللَّـهُ الَّذِي لَا إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الْمَلِكُ الْقُدُّ وسُ السَّلَامُ الْمُؤْمِنُ الْمُهَيْمِنُ الْعَزِيزُ الْجَبَّارُ ْمُتَكَبِّرُ
“He is Allah, besides whom there is no one worthy of worship. He is al-Malik (Lord), al-Quddus (Perfect), al-Salam (Having no faults), al-Mu'min (Confirmer of Rightness), al-Muhaymin (Omniscient), al-'Aziz (Winner), al-Jabbar (Forcing), al-Mutakabbir (Majestic)..."
All other names (except for the name “Allah”) serve as attributes.”
Two other names - “ar-Rahman” and “ar-Rahim” - although they are formed from the same root with the meaning “mercy”, they differ in meaning.
We will give here three main interpretations of these names, all of them correct:
Ar-Rahman is the Merciful, the Possessor of Mercy, Ar-Rahim is the Shower of Mercy.
In this meaning, the first name is associated with the attribute that describes the essence of Allah Almighty, and the second name is associated with His actions, that is, Allah has mercy on whomever He wishes. When choosing this interpretation of these names in Russian, “basmala” can be translated as “with the name of Allah, the Gracious, the Shower of Mercy” or “... the Merciful, the Merciful.”
Ar-Rahman - bestowing blessings on everyone in this world, Ar-Rahim - showing His Mercy only to believers in eternal life.
In accordance with this interpretation, “basmala” is translated into Russian as “with the name of Allah, Gracious to everyone in this world and only to those who believe in the next.”
Imam al-Sanusi gives another interpretation, which most scholars of Aqida considered the most correct: “ar-Rahman” – bestowing significant benefits (such as life, iman, etc.), and “ar-Rahim” – endowing small benefits (delicious food, beautiful clothes, etc.). And the meaning of combining these names in the Koran and in our speech (when we say: “Bismillahi-r-Rahmani-r-Rahim”) is that one should ask the Almighty for both significant things and the most insignificant ones, as indicated Imam al-Bayjuri in Tuhfat al-Murid.
“Ar-Rahman” is an exclusive property of Allah, and this word is used only when addressing the Lord. It is unacceptable to call one of the creations “Rahman”, to give this name to children, etc., since there is no one except Allah, whose mercy would be complete and comprehensive. In addition, the names “Allah” and “ar-Rahman” do not have a dual or plural form, because these are the names of the One who is One, who has no partner equal or similar to Him.
However, the word "ar-rahim" in Arabic can be used to refer to a person: Allah Almighty describes the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) with this quality:
بِالْمُؤْمِنِينَ رَؤُوفْ
He is gentle and merciful (“rahim”) towards the believers.”[17]
Sometimes "Bismillah" is translated as "in the name of Allah." Of course, this is not a completely strict translation in the sense of conveying the grammatical meaning of the Arabic expression, since the function word “bi” in Basmala has the meaning of “combination,” “seeking help,” or “seeking grace.”[18] This means that we say “Bismillah”, combining the recitation of this verse with the beginning of our work, asking the Almighty for help and grace in this matter. And in this sense, the translation “in the name of Allah...” is more accurate. However, from the point of view of meaning, the translation “in the name of Allah” will still be correct, because “in the name of someone” in Russian means “for the sake of someone,” which is absolutely true - we are starting a business for the sake of Allah, wanting to transform the ordinary, everyday activity in worship of the Almighty.
Thus, every time we say “in the name of Allah...” we mean a verb denoting the action that we will perform: “in the name of the All-Merciful Allah I begin/eat/drink/go out/sit down/read the Koran”, etc. . Do not forget that “Bismillahir-Rahmani-r-Rahim” is a verse of the Holy Quran, and it must be shown the same respect as the Quran itself: if it is written on paper or printed in a book, it is not permissible to touch it without small ablution (wudu). If you do not have a ghusl, then in addition to this you cannot read this verse with the intention of reading the Koran, however, you can pronounce “basmala” as a prayer (dua) or as words of remembrance of Allah before starting any business permitted by Sharia.
Every devout Muslim begins all his actions with the phrase “Bismillahi Rahmani Rahim.” Such an undertaking is prescribed by Shariah and according to Hadith, if you do not say “Bismillahi” before every important undertaking, then it is deprived of Barakah and the chances of such an undertaking to succeed will be minimal. Why does the phrase “Bismillahi Rahmani Rahim” have such great meaning for Muslims? A truly devout Muslim performs all his deeds, actions and acts of worship in the name of the Almighty and in the name of the Almighty. And the prayer “Bismillahi Rahmani Rahim” translated from Arabic means “in the name of Allah, the Gracious and Merciful.” If a person does actions or deeds not for the sake of the Almighty, but to achieve his worldly goals, such as fame, enrichment, personal gain or for the sake of his reputation among people, such deeds will not have spiritual encouragement. And Allah will not accept them, no matter how good they are. But with the phrase “Bismillahi Rahmani Rahim,” a Muslim puts divine power and strength into his actions, and it serves as oral proof of sincere intentions for the glory of the Almighty. The good deed begun with “Bismillaha” is recorded for the person and on the Day of Judgment it will play its role. Bismillahi contains the names of Allah. Allah directly indicates that everything begins only at the desire and will of the Almighty. Rahman is His attribute, which indicates that only Allah keeps the matter intact and existing, and Rahim is also His attribute, which, through the mercy of Allah, allows a person to benefit from this matter. Therefore, all actions that begin with the prayer “Bismillahi Rahmani Rahim” will be granted Barakat and the blessing of the Almighty. ...the clouds retreated, moving to the east, the winds stopped blowing, the oceans calmed down, all creatures prepared to listen, fire was sent from Heaven to Shaitan, and Allah Almighty, swearing by His Honor, declared: “He who pronounces this name of Mine (“Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim") over anything, I will send down the Barakah on this matter (thing, etc.). It is for this reason that the Prophet Rasulullah uttered this phrase and advised the community to do the same before starting any business: before locking the door at night, turning on the light, drinking water, eating, getting into or leaving a vehicle, etc. And on the Day of Fair Judgment, Allah will remember all the smallest good deeds in His name, which a person himself may not remember.

Interpretation of the words of prayer
Every word in this prayer matters. "Bismillah" is an appeal to Allah. This word carries the greatest weight in prayer. Often Muslims can recite it several dozen times a day. Often "Bismillah" is mistaken for the name of God, but this is not so. This word has a much broader meaning, which is why it is so widely used.
"Rahman" is one of the components of prayer. The word is a name of Allah that is not spoken very often. It means that he is merciful to absolutely everyone who honors him, be it a ruler or a slave. Every person who worships Allah can have the favors that He gives him:
- health;
- strong family;
- good career.
The main mercy that Allah can give a person is the opportunity to repent of the sins that he has committed and receive forgiveness. Every person who decides to turn to the Almighty with a sincere prayer receives an answer. The most important thing is to open your heart to the grace that is given.
The word "Rahim", which appears in Muslim prayer, means "mercy". This shows that the Almighty can forgive everyone during the Supreme Court. All people will be remembered for their deeds, even the smallest good deeds will be counted towards them. Allah is merciful and he is ready to accept in Paradise all people who have done something good in life, which is why every devout Muslim pronounces the words so often. This is a guarantee that after death he goes to a world that is much better than this. These sacred words are taught to children so that from an early age they can earn the right to be in a better place.
This is the reason why Muslims do so many good things, but it does not make them hypocritical - doing good just for the chance of going to Heaven will not count. You need to try to help everyone who needs it and you need to do this only from the bottom of your heart.

Interpretation of the words of Bismillahi Rahmani Rahim
All scholars of Islam agree that “Bismillahi-r-Rahmani-r-Rahim” is a verse of the Holy Quran included in Surah an-Naml:
إِنَّهُ مِن سُلَيْمَانَ وَإِنَّهُ بِسْمِ اللَّـهِ الرَّحْمَـٰنِ ا لرَّحِيمِ
Prophet Suleiman, peace be upon him, wrote in a letter to Bilqis (Queen of Sheba):
“This letter is from Suleiman, and I begin with the name of Allah, the Gracious and the Merciful.” Here the words “Bismillahi-r-Rahmani-r-Rahim” are considered the verse of this surah. Scholars are also unanimous that this verse is written at the beginning of every sura, except for Surah at-Taubah. But there is disagreement among the imams of Islam over whether Basmala is a verse of Surah al-Fatihah or not. According to the great Imam Abu Hanifa, this verse is not included in any surah except an-Naml. Basmala is an independent verse of the Quran, which was revealed by Allah precisely in order to separate one Quranic sura from another.
When is it customary to say Islamic prayers?
In the Islamic religion, one of the most important actions is to read a prayer. It is believed that namaz is the connection of every person with God, so Muslims try to read it more often. Everyone wants to be as close as possible to the Almighty, to Allah. Prophet Muhammad said that the best act of a person is prayer. Namaz is read five times a day; this cleanses a Muslim from sins, strengthens the spirit and faith, and also protects against future falls and sinful thoughts. People of the Islamic religion firmly believe that the first thing they will be asked about at the Last Judgment is whether the prayer was read on time.
According to accepted rules and traditions, ablution is performed before prayer. Only after this does the reader appear before the Lord. In the first, morning prayer, he praises and honors the Creator, exalts, asserts His irrefutable right to worship. The reader prays to the Creator, asks Him to show him the right path, and as proof of the greatest loyalty and complete humility, he bows to Allah to the ground.
Muslim prayers are chanted exclusively in Arabic, only this language is considered the language of Revelation, only in it a person has the right to speak with God. Also, according to the requirements, prayer is read five times a day.
Here is a list of prayers that must be recited every day in the Islamic religion:
- At dawn, when the sun just touches the sky, the first morning prayer is read. It is called Irtenge;
- Exactly in the middle of the day, when the sun is at its zenith, the second, midday prayer is read. It is called Oyle;
- Between the middle of the day and sunset, in the evening, when the sun begins to move towards the horizon, the third, evening prayer is read. It is called Ikende;
- At sunset, at the moment when the sun begins to go beyond visibility, the fourth, late prayer is read. It is called Akhsham;
- At dusk, when the sun has already gone, the last, fifth, night prayer is read. It's called Yastu.
This rhythm is the rhythm of life of every Muslim, his invincible duty. He has the right to read namaz anywhere, in the mosque, at home, at work, on the street, in the office, it doesn’t matter. Before prayer, the Adhan is required - this is a call to prayer.
In addition to the above, there are also conditions that Muslims must comply with:
- Ritual purity. Before each prayer, the reader must check whether the place is clean and whether he himself is clean. If dirty, you should wash the room and wash yourself. It is also obligatory to perform ablution before each prayer;
- Qibla. While reading the prayer, a Muslim must face towards the Muslim shrine of the Kaaba;
- Cloth. A Muslim's clothing must be completely clean, especially free of dirt and the hair of pigs and dogs. Both men and women must have their awrah covered; for men, this is only part of the body, from the navel to the knees. For women, this is the entire body, except for the face, hands and feet;
- Sincerity and honesty. Every Muslim has the right to read prayer only with an open heart and sincere desire, otherwise Allah will punish him.
The mind is also important when reading, it should be crystal clear and clear. All psychotropic and intoxicating substances are strictly prohibited in the Islamic religion.
What should every Muslim know?
In the Islamic religion, there are certain prayers that every Muslim should know. So it is in other religions. People learn them by heart and use them for their intended purpose in the allotted time. In Islam, prayers are called namaz, dua, surah and are taken from the Koran. Namaz is read five times a day and is obligatory for Muslims all over the world. A certain time is set for each prayer, and no matter where a person is, if he is a Muslim, he is obliged to read the prayer at the allotted time.
Dua and sura are prayers that are designed to help a person in some way. Let’s say there is a dua for healing from an illness, a dua for attracting wealth, a dua against the evil eye, a surah for travelers, a surah for parents, etc.
