What is an akathist
Akathist is one of the genres of church hymnography. These chants are of a laudatory and grateful nature and are dedicated to the Lord (for example, an akathist to the Sweetest Jesus), the Mother of God, one or another saint or angel. There are also akathists in honor of church holidays and miraculous icons of the Mother of God. The word “akathist” is of Greek origin and is translated as “non-seated,” that is, “a song performed while standing, not sitting.” Akathists should also be listened to while standing during the service.
Byzantine mosaic of Jesus Christ
All akathists have the same structure. They contain 12 ikos (large stanzas) and 13 kontakia (small stanzas). In the kontakion the theme is only indicated, but in the ikos it is developed. Therefore, ikos always follows after the kontakion and cannot be read independently of it. Each ikos ends with twelve praises (hairetisms) of the person in whose honor the akathist was composed.
All Hayretisms begin with the word “Rejoice” - this is how the person praying directly addresses the saint being sung. In Church Slavonic, “Rejoice” means greeting, not a call to joy. These praises make up the bulk of the akathist. The kontakia ends with the exclamation “Hallelujah!”, which means “Praise God!”
Archpriest Maxim Kozlov says that
“The akathist expresses a dogmatic and poetic contemplation of a miracle.”
The priest calls the akathist a “verbal icon” of a holy person or blessed event.
Prayer to Our Lord Jesus Christ
To You, Lord, the only Good and Unforgettable Evil One, I confess my sins, I fall down crying to You, unworthy: I have sinned, Lord, I have sinned and am not worthy to look up to the heights of heaven from the multitude of iniquities. For my sake. But, my Lord, Lord, grant me tears of tenderness, the only Blessed and Merciful One, as I beseech Thee with them, to be cleansed before the end from all sin: it is a terrible and terrible place for the Imam to pass through. and, bodies separated, and a multitude of gloomy and inhuman [] demons will disappear [], and no one will help or deliver. Thus I bow to Your goodness, do not betray me to those who offend me, below let my enemies boast about me, Good Lord, below let them say: You came into our hands, and You were betrayed to us. Neither, Lord, do not forget Your bounties and do not repay me for my iniquities, and do not turn Your face away from me: but You, Lord, punish [instruct] me, both with mercy and bounty. Let my enemy not rejoice over me, but extinguish [stop] his reproaches [threats] against me and abolish all his actions, and give me a blameless [honest] path to You, Good Lord: even if I have sinned, I will not resort to another doctor , and do not stretch out my hand to a foreign god, do not deny my prayer, but hear me with Your goodness and strengthen my heart with Your fear, and may Your grace be upon me, Lord, I Like fire, burn up the unclean thoughts in me. For you are, Lord, light, more than any light; joy, more than any joy; repose, more than any repose; true life and salvation that endures forever and ever, amen.
Our akathist to the Sweetest Jesus is an imitation of the akathist to the Mother of God and, undoubtedly, was translated from Greek; but it did not come into use by the Greek Church, and its original is unknown. In our country, for the first time, an akathist to the Sweetest Jesus was published in the Kiev edition of the “all-week” akathists in 1697. The Holy Synod reacted to it with restraint, and in 1727 instructed the rector of the Kiev-Pechersk monastery, “with other learned and skilled people,” to examine it and correct it, and drew attention to the beginning of the 11th ikos, where about the Lord God Himself, according to example of the akathist to the Mother of God, it was printed: “Svetopri e
I am the Lamp,” whereas “He Himself is the Light-Giver.”
As a result, the indicated place was corrected to “Light of
the Lamp.” It is unknown who and when exactly our akathist was compiled.

By analogy with other parallel passages, it must be assumed that in the Greek text here stood περιεργία, translated into Church Slavonic despondency.

The genitive case of a single-meaning and single-root name shows that these names should be taken in the full sense of the word,

Such doubling constitutes, as it were, a superlative degree in the concept of a noun, for example: forever and ever, King of kings, King of kings and Lord of lords, feast of feasts

History of the Akathist
For a long time, an akathist was a name given to a specific and unique chant dedicated to the Most Holy Theotokos. He is also called the Great Akathist. The author of this work is not reliably known. Presumably, he was Roman the Sweet Singer, an early Christian saint, the author of many liturgical hymns.
The first akathist was created no later than the 6th century AD. And at the beginning of the 7th century, a new introduction was compiled for him, beginning with the words “To the Chosen Voivode.” It is imbued with a victorious mood and gratitude to the Mother of God. The change in the beginning of the first akathist is associated with the deliverance of Constantinople from the invasion of Avar and Slavic tribes in 626.
Later, many different imitations of the Great Akathist appeared, dedicated to other sacred personalities. Among them is an akathist to Jesus Christ. Since then, the word “akathist” has come to designate not a specific monument of church hymn-making, but an entire genre of spiritual chants. The Byzantine patriarchs Isidore I and Philotheus made a significant contribution to the development of the genre.
Akathists became popular in Russia in the 19th century. During the persecution of the Church in the USSR, they received special recognition. This is due to the fact that akathists could be read by any believer independently, without a priest. The wide dissemination of these chants was also facilitated by their small volumes and ease of perception.
When akathists are sung
The Church Charter prescribes the singing of the Akathist to the Mother of God on the fifth Saturday of Great Lent. During the celebration of the Passion, the Akathist to the Divine Passion of Christ is sung. Also, akathists are often included in other services (for example, prayers).
Akathists are also used by Orthodox Christians in home prayer. They are read to express joy and gratitude to God or a saint. Also, these texts are turned to in difficult moments to ask for help from the Lord, the Mother of God or a certain saint.
Akathist is “a song imbued with the spirit of cheerfulness and joy” (A. Popov, “Orthodox Russian Akathists”). Therefore, it attracts every prayerful soul thirsting for encouragement and consolation.
Akathist to the Sweetest Jesus
The most ancient manuscript with an akathist to the Sweetest Jesus dates back to the 13th century. The author of this work is unknown, but its creation is associated with Athonite monasticism. The chant was translated into Slavic in the 14th century. The Akathist to the Sweetest Jesus is considered one of the most touching, since it is dedicated to the Savior and His atoning sacrifice. The earthly life of Christ is described in detail and enthusiastically, His love for mankind, humility and meekness are praised.
Akathist to the Sweetest Jesus is considered an effective prayer remedy for despondency and sinful thoughts.
“Attentive prayer, especially in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ... exposes the serpent in the depths of the heart and, wounding it, encourages it to move” (Complete Collection of the Works of St. Ignatius Brianchaninov, volume 2).
The akathist to the Lord Jesus Christ is permeated with a grateful and repentant mood. His solemn lines spiritually encourage the Christian, strengthening his faith and trust in God. It is customary to read the last prayer of the akathist on one’s knees.
“Let everyone beg for bounties! Let him strike only at the door of the Lord. The Lord will answer him with sincere love” (Creations of St. Ephraim the Syrian, volume 2).
Why is the akathist called the Sweetest?
No one knows the author of this song of praise, for the men of God did not seek glory for themselves, but humbly labored to praise Jesus Christ. Historians suggest that its author could be Saint Hesychius, who always emphasized the importance of Orthodox prayer in the life of every person. He believed that words spoken with sincere faith were the way to miracles.
The Akathist was named for the following reason: The Lord is Love. It is He who gives happiness and joy to those who turn to Him. This is where the name comes from.

Eternal King, Comforter, true Christ, cleanse us from all filth, as you cleansed the ten lepers, and heal us, as you healed the money-loving soul of Zacchaeus the tax collector, so that we may proclaim to You, crying out in repentance: Jesus, incorruptible treasure; Jesus, inexhaustible wealth. Jesus, strengthening food; Jesus, inexhaustible drink. Jesus, beggars' robe; Jesus, intercession of widows. Jesus, protector of the orphans; Jesus, help in your labors. Jesus, guide of strangers; Jesus, the floating helmsman. Jesus, a quiet refuge for those who endure the storm; Jesus God, raise me up, fallen. Jesus, Son of God, have mercy on me.
Kontakion 11
I bring you songs of repentance, I, unworthy, cry out to you like the Canaanite woman: “Jesus, have mercy on me!” For I do not have a daughter, but a flesh heavily possessed by passions and furiously inflamed, and grant healing to the one who proclaims to You: Alleluia!
Ikos 11
You, Lamp, who gives light to those who are in the darkness of ignorance, Paul, who had previously persecuted, heeded the power of the voice of divine wisdom and immediately clarified his soul. So enlighten the darkened eyes of my soul, which exclaims: Jesus, my all-powerful King; Jesus, my God almighty. Jesus, my immortal Lord; Jesus, my glorious Creator. Jesus, my good Teacher; Jesus, my generous Shepherd. Jesus, my most merciful Lord; Jesus, my most merciful Savior. Jesus, enlighten my feelings, darkened by passions; Jesus, heal my body, which is covered with sores of sins. Jesus, cleanse my mind from vain thoughts; Jesus, keep my heart from evil desires. Jesus, Son of God, have mercy on me.
Kontakion 12
Grant me the grace of forgiveness, Jesus who forgives all debts, and accept me, repentant, as You accepted Peter, who denied You, and call me, despondent, like Paul once persecuted You, and hear me exclaiming to You: Alleluia!
Ikos 12
Glorifying Your incarnation, we all praise You and believe with Thomas that You are Lord and God, sitting with the Father and coming to judge the living and the dead. Then deign to stand at Your right hand, calling me: Jesus, Eternal King, have mercy on me; Jesus, fragrant flower, fill me with fragrance. Jesus, beloved warmth, warm me; Jesus, eternal temple, cover me; Jesus, bright robe, adorn me; Jesus, pearl of great price, shine upon me. Jesus, precious stone, enlighten me; Jesus, sun of righteousness, shine on me. Jesus, holy light, illuminate me; Jesus, deliver me from mental and physical illnesses. Jesus, pluck me from the hand of the enemy; Jesus, free me from unquenchable fire and other eternal torments. Jesus, Son of God, have mercy on me.
Kontakion 13
O sweet and all-merciful Jesus! Accept now this little prayer of ours, just as You accepted the widow’s two mites, and preserve Your inheritance from enemies visible and invisible, from the invasion of foreigners, from illness and hunger, from all sorrow and deadly ulcers, and from the coming torment deliver all who cry to You: Hallelujah!
Repeat this kontakion three times.
Ikos 1
Creator of Angels and Lord of the Heavenly Powers! Open my weak mind and loosen my tongue to the praise of Your most pure name, as You once opened the ears of the deaf and tongue-tied, and he spoke, thus exclaiming: Wonderful Jesus, the wonder of the angels; Most powerful Jesus, deliverance of the first parents. Sweet Jesus, magnification of the patriarchs; Glorious Jesus, strengthening of kings. Beloved Jesus, fulfillment of the prophets; Wonderful Jesus, fortress of martyrs. Jesus is very quiet, the monks are joyful; Most merciful Jesus, delight of the elders. Most merciful Jesus, fasters abstinence; Most sweet Jesus, joy of the saints. Jesus of all honor, virgin chastity; Jesus is eternal, salvation of sinners. Jesus, Son of God, have mercy on me.
