The role of prayer in Islam

The Arabic dialect is difficult to accurately convey in Cyrillic. The words of the prayer “Bismillahi Rahmani Rahim” in the original also have a guttural sound “R” between them. It is added to separate concepts.

The meaning of this prayer is: “Oh, Allah, You are merciful and kind to us all.” There are many more translations of the phrase, but the meaning does not change.

From there they begin turning to God. According to the laws of the Koran, a believer must turn to Allah before each of his actions to show that everything is done in gratitude for his mercy. A Muslim must do as many good deeds as possible for his creator. This not only gives them a sacred Blessing. The more this prayer is repeated throughout life, the greater the chances of going to Heaven and a happy life after death.

If a Muslim does not turn to Allah for blessing before each of his actions, then regardless of the good, he will not be able to use it at the Judgment, therefore most believers prefer to say “Bismillahi Rahmani Rahim” before each planned action.

History of appearance

As the Hadith narrates (who doesn’t know, this is all the information about the life of the Prophet Muhammad: his deeds, sayings and more), when the Archangel Jabrail (in Christianity Gabriel) flew to the prophet to convey the next message, he began each of his Wakha (Revelation), saying "Bismillahi Rahmani Rahim".

And the Prophet Muhammad, when he conveyed revelations to his ummah (community), also began his words with “Bismillahi.” And since the information was recorded from the words of the prophet, it turned out that all suras (the ninth is an exception) in the holy book of Muslims - the Koran, begin with the words “Bismillahi Rahmani Rahim”. Prayer (although it is more correct to say namaz) is read by the faithful five times a day; they say the same amount of “Bismillah” only when turning to Allah. But this is not the only time, and during the day you can repeatedly hear the phrase from their lips.

Full text and translation

Muslims pronounce the first words many times a day, but in order for the grace of Allah to descend upon them, they need to repeat the sacred texts in full. They do this five times during the day. In every country where Islam is the national religion, every few hours all Muslims are invited to the mosque. There they pray in specially designated places.

They learn the text of the prayer “Bismillahi Rahmani Rahim” from childhood, and therefore do not need written prompts, but those people who are just beginning to get acquainted with the world of Islam can use notes on sheets of paper. This is not reprehensible. When you repeat a prayer several times a day, it will be remembered very quickly.

The full text of this prayer is:

“Bismillahir rahmanir rahim! Al-hamdu lil-llayahi robil yaalamiin. Ar-rokhmaanir-rohiim. Maaliki yaumid-diin. Iyaaka nabudu ya iyaaka nastaiin. Syrootal-laziina an'amta aleikhim. Goiril-Magduubi galeihim wa lad-doolliin!”

There is a translation into Russian. It is needed to understand the meaning of prayer and offer sacred words with awareness. For those who find it difficult to read Arabic, it is recommended to use the translation:

“I take refuge in Allah to avoid the accursed Satan. In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds, the Gracious, the Merciful, the King on the Day of Judgment! We only worship You and only ask You for help! Guide us on the path of those whom You have bestowed with blessings, those who are under wrath and those who are not lost.”

A true Muslim will never begin prayer without first cleansing his body, so they wash themselves thoroughly and only after that can they turn to the Almighty. In total, prayers in Islam are read 5 times a day. The first one is before dawn, at 5 o’clock in the morning. If you get up early, you can receive grace from the Almighty. After this, you are allowed to return to bed and sleep for a few hours.

You can start the next prayer after sunrise. In the modern world, sacred words are not allowed to be pronounced at a precise time, but must be said 5 times. This will strengthen the grace sent down to the person. The last prayer begins after sunset. At this time, you need to ask for blessings for the next day and give thanks for the past.

On Friday, Muslims repeat the text more often. This day is special: you need to spend more time in prayer to the Almighty. Friday is needed to think about the past week, the bad and good deeds that were committed during this time. On Friday, Muslims ask for blessings for the weekend and the next week.

Interpretation of the words of prayer

Every word in this prayer matters. "Bismillah" is an appeal to Allah. This word carries the greatest weight in prayer. Often Muslims can recite it several dozen times a day. Often "Bismillah" is mistaken for the name of God, but this is not so. This word has a much broader meaning, which is why it is so widely used.

"Rahman" is one of the components of prayer. The word is a name of Allah that is not spoken very often. It means that he is merciful to absolutely everyone who honors him, be it a ruler or a slave. Every person who worships Allah can have the favors that He gives him:

  • health;
  • strong family;
  • good career.

The main mercy that Allah can give a person is the opportunity to repent of the sins that he has committed and receive forgiveness. Every person who decides to turn to the Almighty with a sincere prayer receives an answer. The most important thing is to open your heart to the grace that is given.

The word "Rahim", which appears in Muslim prayer, means "mercy". This shows that the Almighty can forgive everyone during the Supreme Court. All people will be remembered for their deeds, even the smallest good deeds will be counted towards them. Allah is merciful and he is ready to accept in Paradise all people who have done something good in life, which is why every devout Muslim pronounces the words so often. This is a guarantee that after death he goes to a world that is much better than this. These sacred words are taught to children so that from an early age they can earn the right to be in a better place.

This is the reason why Muslims do so many good things, but it does not make them hypocritical - doing good just for the chance of going to Heaven will not count. You need to try to help everyone who needs it and you need to do this only from the bottom of your heart.

Bismillahi Rahmani Rahim: translation, meaning, text

Bismillahi Rahmani Rahim is not a prayer or a surah from the Koran. Bismillahi is translated as “With the name of God”, Rahman is one of the innumerable names of the Almighty Creator and is translated as the Merciful, Rahim is also one of the names of the Almighty Allah and is translated as the Merciful. The words of Bismillahi Rahmani Rahim are fully translated as follows: “In the name of Allah, the Gracious and Merciful.” With these words, a Muslim begins his good deeds.

Basmala is an independent verse of the Quran that separates one Quranic sura from another. Basmala - Bismillahi Rahmani Rahim is not included in any sura except “an-Naml”.

What role does it play for the faithful?

Pronouncing the phrase “Bismillah” is not only a tribute to religion, but also a request to grant help and divine power from the Gracious Almighty. And no matter how good it may be, the deed will no longer deserve spiritual encouragement. By forgetting to pronounce the phrase, the true believer punishes himself, because on the Day of Judgment every deed will be counted and taken into account, but only if the deed was dedicated to the Almighty.

Among other things, the act turns into Ibadat (in another way you can say service to the Almighty). Say the phrase “Bismillahi Rahmani Rahim” - Shaitan will move away from you, and you will come even closer to Allah.

The phrase “Bismillah” is truly magical, because thanks to it, the earthly (dunya) instantly turns into the sacred (din). By recognizing the greatness of Allah, a Muslim receives a reward in eternity!

Virtues of Bismillahi Rahmani Rahim (Basmaly)

Before the advent of Islam, the Arabs began all important matters by pronouncing the name of one or another idol. To eradicate this practice, the first words of revelation that Jibril, peace be upon him, conveyed to our Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, were:

“Recite in the name of your Lord.”

And in many hadiths it is reported that the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, began all important matters by pronouncing the name of Allah. At first he pronounced the formula “Bismika Allahumma” (“In Your name, Allah ...”), and later he began to say “Bismillahi-r-Rahmani-r-Rahim”. From that time on, it became the sunnah to pronounce the basmala.

The sunnah is to recite the basmala before the start of every action permitted by Sharia: before eating, drinking, ablution, entering a vehicle, before turning on the light, closing the door and other actions, even the most ordinary everyday ones.

When to pronounce

As many Hadiths say, the Prophet Muhammad did not begin a single more or less important matter without first saying “Bismillahi-r-Rahmani-r-Rahim” (another variant of the transcription of this phrase). And any true believer, in his Spiritual path, must say “Bismala” before starting his action. It is clear that this act must be approved by Sharia.

This is just a small part of the deeds that believers should dedicate to Allah.

  • Eating or drinking.
  • Performing religious acts such as ablution, prayer, hajj and others.
  • Path or movement: entering any type of transport, opening and closing a door, turning on a light in any room, taking off clothes, and others that seem ordinary and everyday to adherents of other religions.
  • Child education. And if the teacher tells the children to say “Bismillahi Rahmani Rahim,” then (according to Abdullah bin Abbas) the teacher himself, the children, and their parents are immediately freed from the fire of Jahannam, that is, after death they go to heaven.

The following story is given as an example of truthfulness.

One day Sayyidina Isa (Jesus) passed by a cemetery. In one of the graves there was a man who was experiencing the torments of Hell. After some time, he again happened to pass in the same place. This time, the one in the grave was relieved. This surprised Jesus, and he asked the Almighty: “What caused Your Mercy that You yourself removed the punishment of torment?” The answer was: “The deceased left behind a small child, and when the wife took the boy to the Madrasah (a Muslim school where they study not only science, but also God’s word), entering the institution, the child said “Bismillahi Rahmani Rahim,” which the teacher witnessed . I couldn’t continue to punish my father if his child considers me Merciful, so I granted forgiveness.”

The names of the Almighty are “Allah”, “ar-Rahman” and “ar-Rahim”

There are three names of the Lord in the basmala:

About the name “Allah”, Imam Abu Abdullah al-Sanusi, may Allah have mercy on him, writes as follows:

“Allah is the proper name of God, whose Existence is obligatory from the point of view of reason and who is worthy of worship.”

Imam Ibn Kathir writes: “Allah is the proper name of the Lord. There is an opinion that it is the “greatest name” (al-ism al-azam), for it is this name that is described by all the qualities. Allah Almighty says:

هُوَ اللَّـهُ الَّذِي لَا إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الْمَلِكُ الْقُدُّ وسُ السَّلَامُ الْمُؤْمِنُ الْمُهَيْمِنُ الْعَزِيزُ الْجَبَّارُ ْمُتَكَبِّرُ

“He is Allah, besides whom there is no one worthy of worship. He is al-Malik (Lord), al-Quddus (Perfect), al-Salam (Having no faults), al-Mu'min (Confirmer of Rightness), al-Muhaymin (Omniscient), al-'Aziz (Winner), al-Jabbar (Forcing), al-Mutakabbir (Majestic)..."

All other names (except for the name “Allah”) serve as attributes.”

Two other names - “ar-Rahman” and “ar-Rahim” - although they are formed from the same root with the meaning “mercy”, they differ in meaning.

We will give here three main interpretations of these names, all of them correct:

Ar-Rahman is the Merciful, the Possessor of Mercy, Ar-Rahim is the Shower of Mercy.

In this meaning, the first name is associated with the attribute that describes the essence of Allah Almighty, and the second name is associated with His actions, that is, Allah has mercy on whomever He wishes. When choosing this interpretation of these names in Russian, “basmala” can be translated as “with the name of Allah, the Gracious, the Shower of Mercy” or “... the Merciful, the Merciful.”

Ar-Rahman - bestowing blessings on everyone in this world, Ar-Rahim - showing His Mercy only to believers in eternal life.

In accordance with this interpretation, “basmala” is translated into Russian as “with the name of Allah, Gracious to everyone in this world and only to those who believe in the next.”

Imam al-Sanusi gives another interpretation, which most scholars of Aqida considered the most correct: “ar-Rahman” – bestowing significant benefits (such as life, iman, etc.), and “ar-Rahim” – endowing small benefits (delicious food, beautiful clothes, etc.). And the meaning of combining these names in the Koran and in our speech (when we say: “Bismillahi-r-Rahmani-r-Rahim”) is that one should ask the Almighty for both significant things and the most insignificant ones, as indicated Imam al-Bayjuri in Tuhfat al-Murid.

“Ar-Rahman” is an exclusive property of Allah, and this word is used only when addressing the Lord. It is unacceptable to call one of the creations “Rahman”, to give this name to children, etc., since there is no one except Allah, whose mercy would be complete and comprehensive. In addition, the names “Allah” and “ar-Rahman” do not have a dual or plural form, because these are the names of the One who is One, who has no partner equal or similar to Him.

However, the word "ar-rahim" in Arabic can be used to refer to a person: Allah Almighty describes the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) with this quality:

بِالْمُؤْمِنِينَ رَؤُوفْ

He is gentle and merciful (“rahim”) towards the believers.”[17]

Sometimes "Bismillah" is translated as "in the name of Allah." Of course, this is not a completely strict translation in the sense of conveying the grammatical meaning of the Arabic expression, since the function word “bi” in Basmala has the meaning of “combination,” “seeking help,” or “seeking grace.”[18] This means that we say “Bismillah”, combining the recitation of this verse with the beginning of our work, asking the Almighty for help and grace in this matter. And in this sense, the translation “in the name of Allah...” is more accurate. However, from the point of view of meaning, the translation “in the name of Allah” will still be correct, because “in the name of someone” in Russian means “for the sake of someone,” which is absolutely true - we are starting a business for the sake of Allah, wanting to transform the ordinary, everyday activity in worship of the Almighty.

Thus, every time we say “in the name of Allah...” we mean a verb denoting the action that we will perform: “in the name of the All-Merciful Allah I begin/eat/drink/go out/sit down/read the Koran”, etc. . Do not forget that “Bismillahir-Rahmani-r-Rahim” is a verse of the Holy Quran, and it must be shown the same respect as the Quran itself: if it is written on paper or printed in a book, it is not permissible to touch it without small ablution (wudu). If you do not have a ghusl, then in addition to this you cannot read this verse with the intention of reading the Koran, however, you can pronounce “basmala” as a prayer (dua) or as words of remembrance of Allah before starting any business permitted by Sharia.

Every devout Muslim begins all his actions with the phrase “Bismillahi Rahmani Rahim.” Such an undertaking is prescribed by Shariah and according to Hadith, if you do not say “Bismillahi” before every important undertaking, then it is deprived of Barakah and the chances of such an undertaking to succeed will be minimal. Why does the phrase “Bismillahi Rahmani Rahim” have such great meaning for Muslims? A truly devout Muslim performs all his deeds, actions and acts of worship in the name of the Almighty and in the name of the Almighty. And the prayer “Bismillahi Rahmani Rahim” translated from Arabic means “in the name of Allah, the Gracious and Merciful.” If a person does actions or deeds not for the sake of the Almighty, but to achieve his worldly goals, such as fame, enrichment, personal gain or for the sake of his reputation among people, such deeds will not have spiritual encouragement. And Allah will not accept them, no matter how good they are. But with the phrase “Bismillahi Rahmani Rahim,” a Muslim puts divine power and strength into his actions, and it serves as oral proof of sincere intentions for the glory of the Almighty. The good deed begun with “Bismillaha” is recorded for the person and on the Day of Judgment it will play its role. Bismillahi contains the names of Allah. Allah directly indicates that everything begins only at the desire and will of the Almighty. Rahman is His attribute, which indicates that only Allah keeps the matter intact and existing, and Rahim is also His attribute, which, through the mercy of Allah, allows a person to benefit from this matter. Therefore, all actions that begin with the prayer “Bismillahi Rahmani Rahim” will be granted Barakat and the blessing of the Almighty. ...the clouds retreated, moving to the east, the winds stopped blowing, the oceans calmed down, all creatures prepared to listen, fire was sent from Heaven to Shaitan, and Allah Almighty, swearing by His Honor, declared: “He who pronounces this name of Mine (“Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim") over anything, I will send down the Barakah on this matter (thing, etc.). It is for this reason that the Prophet Rasulullah uttered this phrase and advised the community to do the same before starting any business: before locking the door at night, turning on the light, drinking water, eating, getting into or leaving a vehicle, etc. And on the Day of Fair Judgment, Allah will remember all the smallest good deeds in His name, which a person himself may not remember.

What does it mean?

It is known that the Almighty has three thousand names (information came from Allama Sayyid Hakki), a thousand of which were revealed to the angels, the same number to the prophets, 300 of them are mentioned in the first holy book - the Torah, three hundred - in the Old Testament (Psalms of David), three hundred in the New Testament of the Bible and 99 in the Koran. Only one remains unknown to anyone, which Allah left for himself. It is this name that describes all the qualities inherent in God, the rest are just attributes.

The phrase “Bismillahi Rahmani Rahim,” the translation of which is quite simple and understandable for the faithful, contains three names of the Lord. His proper name is “Allah” and two others are close and of the same root, coming from the word mercy - Ar-Rahman (the Merciful) and Ar-Rahim (the Shower of Mercy).

If we use these meanings, then “Bismillahi Rahmani Rahim” in Russian will sound like “in the name of Allah, the Gracious, the Shower of Mercy.”

That is, when starting his prayer or some task and saying “Bismillahi,” a Muslim confirms that this is only to glorify the name of the Lord, and not for personal, worldly goals leading to enrichment and glory. Any business started with this phrase receives Divine blessing (Barakat) and will be counted on the Day of Judgment. And true believers believe that Bismilla brings success and good luck.

How to write bismillahi rahmani rahim in Arabic?

Prayer Tatar Bismillah Rahman Rakhim

The most famous text in Islam is the Bismillahi Rahmani Rahim prayer. Its deep meaning for Muslims is difficult to convey into Russian. These words are used not only in Arab countries - the Tatar prayer to the Almighty also begins with them.

What does the phrase “Bismillahi Rahmani Rahim” mean? Why do Muslims use it so often and what is its translation?

Ar-Rahim is another name and attribute of Allah Almighty. It signifies God's mercy towards all his devoted and obedient slaves on the Day of Judgment.

Ashhadu alla ilaha illallah - I testify that, verily, there is no deity who should be worshiped and who is worthy of worship, except one single God - Allah, vaashhadu anna Muhammad-r-rasulullah - I also testify that, verily, Muhammad ( peace and blessings be upon him) - Messenger of Allah.

What is Rahman?

More correctly - Ar-Rahman, if we remove the word from the text. This is one of the names of Allah, reflecting his quality of all-mercy towards all his slaves, be they sinners or righteous. Any person on Earth, no matter how misguided he may be, receives colossal graces, starting with a healthy body, a wonderful family, a happy destiny, ending with the main mercy - the opportunity to repent and receive forgiveness at any time.

But not only ordinary people use this magic phrase. All Islamic states begin their Constitutions with the words “Bismillahi Rahmani Rahim”. Documents and books, contracts and letters, wills and appeals begin only with her. Even food is not halal if the hostess does not start cooking with this phrase.

Only the utterance of “Basmala” right before slaughter makes the animal’s meat halal. However, this rule has an exception. Haram (forbidden) pig meat after the words “Bismillah” will still not become halal.

Bismillah prayer in Arabic

This should be done before reading the Koran, Surah Al-Fatiha in prayer, before going to bed, before performing ablution, before entering the toilet and other dirty places, and also in a state of anger. In short, one must always turn to Allah for help in protection from Satan in all conditions.

Miraculous words: bismillahi rahmani rahim alhamdulillahi rabbil alamin prayer in full description from all the sources we found.

This most valuable expression is pronounced before doing something good or good. And the main meaning of this expression is that a Muslim begins this act in the name of Allah and in the hope of His grace (barakat).

It is recommended to say it before eating, sleeping, dressing, reading the Koran, ablution, reading theological books, etc. It is forbidden to say basmala before committing a sinful, bad act. In such cases, you can even fall into disbelief (kufr).

Writing a phrase

Today, “Bismillah” surpasses even the Shahada in its popularity (evidence that Allah is the only God, and Muhammad is his prophet: pronounced at the moment of accepting Islam). And according to tradition, it is written in Arabic script.

From Tasfir's interpretation of the Koran: the person who writes this phrase on a piece of paper exactly 65 times and carries it with him will receive honor and protection from offense as a gift from the Almighty. Well, the one who does it 600 times will have great honor and will not be treated poorly. You just need to write it in Arabic.

Putting a phrase on a gravestone is not prohibited, but many imams recommend not writing it just because it is not known what will happen to the tombstone in a hundred years, and yet three names of the Almighty will be written. It is better to go to the cemetery more often and say the phrase out loud. After all, by doing so you place yourself under the protection of the Almighty, and your deeds become blessed.

Bismillahi Rahmani Rahim translation into Russian

Bismillahi rahmani rahim in Arabic is a phrase consisting of 4 words. It is written like this:

  1. The first word “bismi” consists of the root noun “ism”, which translates as “name”, and the prefix “bi” - which has a meaning similar to the Russian preposition “s”.
  2. The second word “Llahi” is Allah, in which the first sound “a” (alif) is not readable, according to the Arabic rule of continuous reading. Bismillah translated means with the name of Allah. This phrase is often used alone, for example, before a meal.
  3. Rahman translated means the name of Allah - the Merciful.
  4. Rahim – Merciful, also one of the names of the Creator.

Bismillahi rahmani rahim translated into Russian sounds like this: with the name of Allah, the Gracious and Merciful.

Difference in meaning between the names al-Rahman and al-Rahim

The name al-Rahman, like the name Allah, is used only for Allah. No one else can be called by this name. Allah and al-Rahman are the exclusive names of the Almighty. This is why Allah says in the Quran:

“call on Allah or call on al-Rahman, by whatever name you call on Him, to Him belong the most beautiful names.” (Surah al-Isra: 110)

Other names of Allah can be used as words to describe the qualities of other creatures. About the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) the Quran says:

“with believers he is meek and merciful (rahim).” (Surah Tawba: 128).

Allah says about people:

“Verily, We created man from a mixed drop and made him hearing (samigun) and seeing (basyr).” (Surah Al-Insan: 2).

Of course, the meanings of these words when applied to creatures are different from the meanings of the names Allah, which are his sifats (qualities) in the superlative degree.

Both the words al-Rahman and al-Rahim come from the Arabic word “rahma”, meaning mercy. But their interpretation by different Islamic scholars has two options:

  1. Some authors, such as Abu Ali al-Faris, argue that al-Rahman means “general mercy for all creation,” and al-Rahim means “special mercy only for the believers.” The verse is cited as proof: “And He is merciful (Rahim) to the believers.” (Al-Ahzab: 43).
  2. According to another view, the difference between the two is that Al-Rahman denotes the presence of the attribute of mercy, while Al-Rahim refers to the expression of Allah's mercy and its influence on creation. This is the opinion of Ibn al-Qayyim, stated in the book “Madarik al-Salikin”. Based on this view, Allah is Al-Rahman and Al-Rahim in relation to both this world and the next.

And Allah knows best.
