It was to him that a young man named Aglaid turned. He had a passion in the form of a sweet and intelligent girl beyond her years, Ustinya. More than anything else, Aglaid wanted her as his wife, but Ustinya rejected his proposal. Aglaid came to Cyprian and tearfully begged him to force Ustinha to marry him. Cyprian, having requested the appropriate payment, began to cast spells over the girl, sending fears into her, threatening and intimidating her.
However, young Ustinya did not succumb to the sorcerer’s spell. From childhood, Ustinya, also called Justina, revered Christ, turning to him from pagan error. Having brought her parents to the true faith, she devoted her life to worship and spent time in prayer, fasting and preserving her virginity. Thus, she crushed all the devil’s machinations and, by the power of the Cross and fervent prayer, drove away the demons sent by Cyprian. No matter how much he tried to kindle carnal passion in her, no matter how much he sent princes and even himself, appearing to her in a magical guise, he could not tempt her. Firmly believing in the Lord, Ustinya drove away spells and demons; the very name of the holy virgin terrified them.
Angry, Cyprian sent a pestilence to Ustinya and her parents, cursed the entire city, but the girl’s prayer drove away the evil witchcraft.
And then the soul of Cyprian, enslaved by pagan fire, saw the depth of his fall. Cyprian renounced Satan, asking him: “Fearing even the shadow of the cross and trembling before the Name of Christ, how are you going to fight him when he comes for you?” The angry devil attacked his former priest, and then Cyprian learned the power of the Cross and the Name, saving them from evil power. Repentant, he went to the local bishop Anfim and begged for forgiveness, giving him all his books into the sacred flame. The next day, having entered the church, he did not leave it until he had undergone holy Baptism.
From then until the end of his life, Cyprian atoned for the sins of his thirty years of service to the devil. After a week of Service he became a reader, after twenty days - a subdeacon, after a month - a deacon, and a year later Cyprian became a presbyter. Some time passed before Cyprian was elevated to bishop.
The Hieromartyr converted so many pagans to the Christian faith that their temples were devastated, for there was no one to sprinkle the blood of the victims on the abandoned idols. Justina left the city and went to the monastery, where she became abbess.
During the persecution of Christians by Emperor Diocletian, the bishop and abbess were captured. In Nicodemus they were given over to severe torture and death by the sword. Looking at their innocent suffering, a certain warrior named Theoktist publicly declared himself a Christian and ascended to the execution site. Theoktistus was executed along with the holy martyrs and his trace also went down in history.
