Main church holidays, days of remembrance of saints and Orthodox shrines of today

October 8 (September 25 according to the church Julian calendar). Week 18 after Pentecost (the eighteenth Sunday after the great twelve-day feast of the Holy Trinity , otherwise known as Pentecost ). There is no post . On October 8, in the calendar of the Russian Orthodox Church, there is a celebration of the memory of St. Sergius of Radonezh and 8 other saints known by name. Next, we will briefly talk about these ascetics, whom the Orthodox Church especially glorifies today.

***

Venerable Sergius of Radonezh . Today marks the repose day of this greatest Russian saint, who departed to the Lord in 1392 from the Nativity of Christ.

Ascetic and prayer book. Teacher of a host of Russian saints and mentor of princes. The founder of monasticism in Muscovite Rus' and its spiritual father, abbot of the Russian land. An ascetic whose contribution today is recognized not only by church, but also by secular authorities. You can learn more about this great ascetic from our material published on the pages of Constantinople.

Venerable Euphrosyne of Alexandria . Saint of the 5th century from the Nativity of Christ. The daughter of pious Christian parents, Saint Euphrosyne was left early without a mother; her father, a noble man, but meek and pious, was entirely involved in her upbringing.

At the age of 18, they were going to marry her off, but the young ascetic, who sought to devote her life to Christ and His Church, secretly took monastic vows. After this, dressing in a man's dress, Saint Euphrosyne called herself the eunuch Izmaragd and entered a monastery, where she spent 38 years in the strictest fasting and prayer.

The saint's father was very sad about the loss of his daughter; while visiting the monastery, he talked with the monk Izmaragd, in whom he did not recognize Euphrosyne. The daughter consoled her old father, and before her death she opened up to him. After the burial of Saint Euphrosia, her father also took monastic vows and for 10 years, until his death, performed monastic deeds in his daughter’s cell.

Martyr Paphnutius and with him 546 martyrs . Egyptian holy sufferers who accepted the crown of martyrdom for Christ and His Church during the most severe anti-Christian persecution during the reign of the pagan emperor Diocletian (Diocletian), who reigned in the Roman Empire in 284-305 A.D.

Saint Paphnutius voluntarily appeared to the ruler of the Tentira region, confessing himself to be a Christian, for which he was subjected to terrible torture. Seeing the strength of the sufferer’s faith, some soldiers also declared themselves Christians and were executed. As a result, together with the martyr Paphnutius, 546 Christians received the crowns of martyrdom, and the saint himself was crucified on a date tree.

Venerable Euphrosyne of Suzdal . 13th-century Russian saint was officially canonized only in 1698 , but her popular veneration began much earlier.

The daughter of the Holy Blessed Prince Michael of Chernigov, Princess Theodulia was born in 1212 from the Nativity of Christ. From childhood she was brought up in deep faith and piety. Boyar Theodore, a close friend of her father, who later shared his martyrdom with Prince Mikhail, had a great influence on the young princess.

After the sudden death of the groom, Prince Theodore Yaroslavich, the brother of the holy noble prince Alexander Nevsky , the young princess, who arrived from her native Chernigov in North-Eastern Russia, took monastic vows at the Suzdal Intercession Monastery. Over time, she became his abbess. The rare ascetic life of the Monk Euphrosyne soon became known far beyond the borders of Suzdal. Many people visited the Intercession Monastery to hear teachings about love, prayer, obedience, humility and other Christian virtues.

After the blessed death of the saint, her veneration spread throughout Rus'. Many thousands of believers began to resort to the relics of Saint Euphrosyne. In Soviet times, this great shrine ended up in a museum. But even in the 1990s it was not possible to return it to the Church. The relics ended up in a pseudo-Orthodox sect - the so-called Russian Autonomous Church. Only in the spring of 2015, the shrine was finally confiscated from the sectarians and transferred to the Orthodox Monastery of the Deposition of the Robe, where the Venerable Euphrosyne rested in 1250 .

Transfer of the relics of St. Herman, Archbishop of Kazan . This great saint of the 16th century , the Christian educator of the Kazan Khanate (after its annexation to the Russian state) departed to the Lord in Moscow in 1567 from the Nativity of Christ. Venerable Dosithea (Tyapkina), recluse of Kiev . Russian saint of the 18th century , one of the most difficult periods in the history of the Russian Church, when it was deprived of the Patriarchate and was ruled according to the Western model by the Synod, the chief prosecutor of which was a secular person. However, even in these times there were many great spiritual ascetics, such as the Monk Dosithea, who was born into a noble family in Ryazan. At the age of 15, she left home, dressed in men's clothing, and was received at the Trinity-Sergius Lavra, where she served as a novice and sexton for 3 years.

Later, Saint Dosithea went to the cradle of Russian monasticism - the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, where she, who did not have a passport, was not accepted, after which the monk settled as a hermit in a cave. The fame of the “hermit Dositheus” spread so widely that “him” was visited by Empress Elizaveta Feodorovna herself, who personally petitioned for the “elder’s tonsure” to become a monk of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra.

It was Elder Dosithea who once received the young Prokhor Moshnin (the future Venerable Seraphim of Sarov ) and blessed him to go to the Sarov hermitage. The saint died during kneeling prayer in 1776 from the Nativity of Christ.

The discovery of the relics of the holy martyrs Alexander Smirnov and Feodor Remizov, presbyters, and the memory of the holy confessor Nikolai Rozov, presbyter . These clergy of the Russian Church suffered in different years during the period of Soviet atheistic persecution. Fathers Alexander and Theodore suffered martyrdom, and Father Nikolai endured a lot of suffering, but remained alive and died of natural causes in 1941 . All of them were glorified as saints in the thousands of new martyrs and confessors of the Russian Church.

What church holiday do Orthodox Christians honor today?

Representatives of the Russian Orthodox Church honor the memory of St. Sergius, who was the rector of the Radonezh Church. Since ancient times in Rus', Saint Sergius was one of the greatest ascetics of the Russian land.

Saint Sergius of Radonezh was one of the most famous Russian saints. He founded the Trinity-Sergius Lavra and was also the rector of the Radonezh Church. This man was a mentor to many believers who became famous for their exploits. The monk was not only an abbot who revealed the truth to the believers, but also guided himself on the right path. As a young man, Sergius spent a lot of time sitting in front of books, he studied everything he could. The monk was a model of meekness and humility; he was considered the patron saint of students. They also pray to the monk if help is needed in monastic work, about overcoming passions, especially pride.

It is known that you pray to a clergyman if you have a lot of problems. They also pray to him for healing of both body and soul. By turning to the monk with prayer, you can get rid of pride. In times of war, one also needs to turn to a sacred image; this is usually done by the fairer sex, whose husbands went to the battlefield. They prayed that the men would return home alive.

Believers prayed when they did not know how to get out of a certain situation. Prayer to the sacred image of Sergius helped to defend one’s rights in court, but only on the condition that the person stands for a just cause. People also turn to the icon when there are difficulties in work matters.

If a person had problems that could not be solved on their own, people turned to the sacred image of Sergius, trying to achieve justice and resolve all their conflicts. Prayer helps you find yourself and find the true path.

Conspiracies of October 8

A conspiracy to get a girl to marry

Sometimes a girl is modest, economical, but poor and ugly, so they don’t marry her. Usually her mother, father or compassionate aunt come to ask for her. If you decide to rescue the girl from loneliness, then ask her to be taken to the field (or take her yourself), and there, when the sun begins to wake up and the dawn turns red, you need to put the girl facing the sunrise and say:

In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen. (So-and-so) came to the sun early, May her face be clear and rosy. The sun rises and rises, the slave (such and such) has more beauty. And just like everyone admires and marvels at the sun, so let the guys have mercy on the red maiden (name). Matchmakers would rush to her, run, The guys would all grieve for her, suffer, Call her for marriage, lead her to the crown, Without her in this world, They could neither exist nor live. And just as no one can buy this clear sun, so no one can get rid of my words and deeds. Now, forever, for all time. Amen.
