Church of St. Basil the Great in the village of Afanasyevka
in 2005 it was placed under protection as an architectural monument of the eclectic era.
History[edit]
The village was founded in the middle of the 17th century. The founders are considered to be fifteen families - “children of the boyars”, from Yelets, led by Afanasy Vikhrov, and eleven families - from Stary Oskol. They are mentioned in the “Notes of the Imperial Geographical Society”, published in St. Petersburg in 1857. The village was named in honor of St. Athanasius of Alexandria, he is listed as one of the patron saints of the village and the temple. According to one version, the first church in the village of Afanasyevka was already in the 1680s and was precisely in honor of St. Athanasius the Great.
In 1775, a wooden Vasilyevskaya church with a bell tower was built in the village, which in 1886 had 33 acres of land and 1000 parishioners.
“List of populated places in the Voronezh province according to information from 1859” indicates that in the state-owned village of Afanasyevka there was an Orthodox church, 183 households, where 750 men and 785 women lived.
The temple, built in 1905 in the village of Afanasyevka, was desecrated during the years of Soviet power and was used as a cultural center. The main dome and belfry were destroyed, the roof was made gable, only the foundation and walls survived from the temple, a stage was built in the altar on which cultural workers danced and sang, and a library was built on the right side of the temple. For some time there was a buffet and offices on the left side of the temple.
In 1990, at the request of believers, the building was returned to the Church.
In 2003, a board of trustees was created for the reconstruction of St. Basil's Church.
Icons of St. Basil's Cathedral
The unusual architectural style and design of the temple are not the only things it can boast of. The main value of the complex is considered to be its iconostasis. Original, one of a kind, it includes about icons (written during the period of the 16th-19th centuries). Both Moscow masters and Novgorod talents worked on the images of Jesus, the Mother of God, and the Saints.
Their masterpieces of painting were combined into a single composition only in the 19th century (as part of a project authored by Pavlinov). Along with the unusually beautiful iconostasis in St. Basil's Cathedral, you can see individual icons of O. Chirikov, one of the most prominent Moscow artists and part-time restorer.
INTERESTING: Jesus Christ.
Architectural features of the temple
The single-domed, three-apse temple was built of cut stone and lime mortar. It rests on four load-bearing round pillars and has raised girth arches. Adjacent to the main quadrangle are three aisles - the main one and two side aisles, located to the north and south. The extensions appeared at different times and served to hold church services and store valuable items and goods. They give the temple a complex, asymmetrical shape, making it look like ancient Russian mansions.
At first, the main volume was covered by a sub-coat covering. Then it was replaced with a more practical hip roof. And during the last restoration, carried out quite recently, the covering of the quadrangle and the northern aisle was returned to its original shape.
The external decor of Vasilievskaya Church speaks of the clear influence of the traditions of Moscow architecture. The apse of the altar and the drum are completed with ornamental friezes, which use Novgorod motifs with triangles and depressions. However, these ornaments come with triple ribbons, as is customary in the Moscow architectural school.
How to get there
Vasilyevskaya Church is located in the center of Pskov, on Oktyabrsky Avenue, 5.
It is 2.4 km away from the city railway station (Pskov-Passenger station). This distance can be covered on foot, or by bus or taxi. If you get to the temple by buses and minibuses, you need to get off at the “Children's Park” stop.
Those who want to drive up to the temple in a personal car should turn off the Leningradskoye Shosse from the south-eastern outskirts of Pskov onto highway A 212 leading to Izborsk and drive towards the city center.

Current status and visiting hours
Vasilyevskaya Church is active, and services are held in it every day. The doors of the temple are open for pilgrims and tourists from 8.00 to 19.00. The church shop is open at the same hours. The ancient icon of Our Lady of Tikhvin (16th century) today belongs to the Pskov Museum-Reserve. Vasilyevsky Church has been well restored; inside it you can see a rich iconostasis. Currently, work is underway to paint the interior walls.
Since 2005, a Sunday school has been opened at the church, which is attended by the children of parishioners. Classes are conducted in two age groups: preschool (from 3 to 7 years old) and school (from 7 to 14 years old). Vasilievsky Church also has its own icon-painting workshop and an artistic forging workshop, where you can order icons, forged crosses, railings, fences and grilles.

Interesting things about the complex
TOP facts about the cathedral are as follows:
- St. Basil's Cathedral is one of the most ancient. Very soon he will turn 5000 years old.
- During the era of the Soviet Union, the complex did not function fully. No services were held there. The cathedral's doors were open to tour groups (in other words, it was used exclusively as a museum). Interestingly, at the official level it is still subordinate to the State Historical Museum. However, now services are held there (the Russian Orthodox Church is behind the organization).
- Initially the temple had 25 domes. Now there are only 10 of them.
- St. Basil's Cathedral is an unofficial name that took root among the people after the disappearance of the moat (mentioned in the original name).
- The construction of the temple took only 6 years (for comparison, let us remember the Cologne Cathedral, the construction of which took approximately 600 years).
- Good acoustics inside the complex are the merit of the builders, who decided to use a trick by walling clay pots into the walls (with their necks turned inward).
- St. Basil's Cathedral is connected to the tsar's treasury by a secret passage. The latter was discovered relatively recently.
- Now historians cannot identify the architect behind the construction of the cathedral. According to legend, after completing the large-scale project, the unfortunate man was blinded so that he could not surpass himself in the future. The corresponding order was given by Ivan the Terrible himself.
- During the Patriotic War of 1812, Napoleon, entering Moscow, ordered to blow up St. Basil's Cathedral. But the weather did not allow him to do this - the rain wet the gunpowder (see 15 interesting facts about the War of 1812).
- The world-famous complex (by the way, it was included in the UNESCO list as the most important world heritage) was erected on the site of old wooden churches. The latter were built under the Great Ivan III.
WE RECOMMEND: Cathedral of Christ the Savior.
