During his lifetime, the Trimifuntsky Wonderworker Saint Spyridon was a model of righteousness, kindness, meekness and philanthropy. He worked miracles for the benefit of everyone who asked, donated to those in need, and lived in modesty, not striving for wealth or fame. The saint is credited with miraculous healings, both physical and mental. People turn to him for stability, and what it consists of, we will tell you in more detail in this article.
Some biographical facts
Saint Spyridon was born in Cyprus in 270. Accustomed to labor from childhood, he did not disdain physical work until the end of his life. In his parents' house, his responsibilities included caring for domestic animals, but even after becoming a high clergyman, he continued to shepherd flocks of sheep. In his youth, Spiridon was married and, remaining a widower, raised and raised his daughter Irina.
A deeply religious and God-fearing man, Spiridon strove to live in meekness, cordiality, and love for people. In his house, the homeless received shelter, the hungry received food, and the mourners received comfort. The Lord endowed him with the gift of clairvoyance, the ability to heal and revive people, and influence the weather.
While Constantine the Great and his heir were in power (mid-4th century), the monk was elected Bishop of Trimythuntus, and therefore was called Spyridon of Trimythuntus. For many years he remained a loving but strict father to his flock.
Many miraculous deeds are recorded in the life of Saint Spyridon:
- with his prayer he brought rain in a dry year and saved the people of Cyprus from hunger;
- hastening to help a prisoner unjustly sentenced to death, he crossed the river like dry land;
- brought back to life the dead girl, and then the mother who died of joy.
But, sympathizing with all those in trouble, the Monk Spyridon remained strict and adamant with violators of God's laws. And it doesn’t matter whether it was a simple fraudulent grain merchant or a clergyman distorting the meaning of the Holy Scriptures.
Lifetime miracles
The sincere prayer of Saint Spyridon was repeatedly noted by the Savior. A documented case was recorded when, during a service in an empty church, Saint Spyridon was helped by a choir of Angels. Parishioners who happened to come into the church at that time heard the singing of “Lord, have mercy” coming out of nowhere during the service.
During another service, one of the lamps ran out of oil and had to go out. But suddenly the flame flared up with renewed vigor: the lamp miraculously filled to the brim with fragrant oil. Rushing to the aid of his parishioners, saving their souls, Saint Spyridon was not blind, he saw and exposed their vices, called for repentance and correction. One day the saint went to serve in a village that was 30 miles from his city.
Exhausted by the long journey and the heat, the elder asked the local clergyman not to delay the service. But the ambitious cleric, thirsting for power and glory, began to perform prayers deliberately slowly. “Shut up!” - the miracle worker shouted, and the deacon lost his voice. Saint Spyridon himself completed the service, forgave the proud man and restored his ability to speak.
There is a known case when a cattle dealer came to Saint Spyridon and, seeing a weak old man in front of him, decided to deceive him. Having laid out money for 99 goats on the table, he tried to take 100 with him. The Monk Spyridon, without recalculating the amount left, learned the truth.
The hundredth goat refused to leave the herd. And when the sly man threw her on his shoulders, she butted him thoroughly with her horns. Spiridon ordered the merchant to return to the house, count the money and correct the mistake. The ashamed man paid the difference, and the goat itself ran after him.
Meaning of the image
For an Orthodox believer, an icon is a sacred image of a clergyman. Turning to the image helps you concentrate in your prayer and cut off your subjective perception of reality. The hand of the master who painted the face of the saint is always guided by the Almighty.
Spyridon of Trimifuntsky appears on icons in the robes of a clergyman, since during his lifetime he was awarded the rank of bishop. But his head is covered not with a bishop’s miter, but with a simple knitted shepherd’s hat, which always reminds the worshiper of the simplicity and accessibility of Saint Spyridon for ordinary people. Having been elevated to a high position, Saint Spyridon did not change himself and did not change his way of life: he lived very modestly, tended herds of goats and sheep, did not have expensive things, and ate simple food.
On the hagiographic icon, in the center of which the righteous man Spyridon is depicted sitting and blessing, there are usually 12-20 stamps along the edges - small icons telling about events in the life of the righteous man. Previously, parishioners who could not read studied the lives of saints using such icons. And handwritten books were very expensive in those days. Two archangels standing on the sides hold out scrolls to him, on which are written requests addressed to the patron saint.
The most famous icon is “Saint Spyridon with Fire in His Hand.” It illustrates an event that took place in 325 in Nicaea, where the First Ecumenical Council took place. Saint Spyridon in his speech condemned heretics who questioned the trinity of the Lord.
“There are secrets that are inaccessible to a mere mortal,” he said, and to prove his rightness he performed a miracle. Taking a simple brick, he squeezed it, and fire appeared from the stone and water flowed. The brick became simple clay.
Saint Spyridon said: “Now you see that there is one brick, and three elements. So in the Most Holy Trinity there are three persons, but the Divinity is one.” The disputants were forced to agree.

Peace be with you, dear visitors of the Orthodox website “Family and Faith”!
25 December the Church memory of St. Spyridon, Bishop of Trimifuntsky, the Wonderworker is celebrated!
this glorious and wondrous saint, from young to old! The Russian people loved and revered Saint Spyridon on a par with Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker! And now, a century later, the veneration of St. Spyridon in Russia is increasing. In 2010, more than 1,500,000 people came to venerate the relics brought from Greece - the right hand of the saint!
Saint Nicholas and Saint Spyridon lived at the same time, the second half of the 3rd and the first half of the 4th centuries. They both attended the First Ecumenical Council, becoming the most famous defenders of the Orthodox faith! Saint Nicholas, in righteous anger, struck on the cheek the blasphemer and heretic Arius, who did not recognize the Divine dignity in Jesus Christ, and thereby rejected the Holy Trinity, and Saint Spyridon, in front of all the participants of the Council, squeezed a brick, and miraculously extracted fire, clay and water, with the help of which this brick was made. By this, Saint Spyridon showed how three objects can be one whole, and so the Three Persons of the Holy Trinity are One God!
With Saint Spyridon he lived an amazing life, filled with many, many miracles. Read his biography on the website page Life of St. Spyridon
Below we post a cartoon life created by the Orthodox TV channel “Soyuz”, which briefly narrates the main events from the life of St. Spyridon:
Life of Saint Spyridon of Trimythous
At the end of the 3rd century, there lived one simple man, Spiridon, on the island of Cyprus. He was a shepherd and had a wife and children. And he would have been no different from other thousands of people of that time, if not for his special mentality. He was a very kind-hearted person, he helped everyone in any way he could, beggars, strangers, friends, acquaintances, doing good deeds for the glory of the Lord.
And God rewarded the righteous man for his good works. He sent him the gift of miracles. Spyridon was able to help people even more, heal their illnesses, and cast out demons from them. Later becoming a widower, he decided to devote his life to serving the Lord. Then the people elected him bishop of the Cyprus city of Trimifunt, and in addition to feats of mercy, he also began to perform feats of pastoral service. It was a feat, for with the help of the saint many residents of Trimifunt got rid of their secret sins and took the path of salvation.
Every day he showed people an example of a charitable life and hard work. And the miracles he performed for the benefit of his flock are innumerable. He saved Cyprus from drought and famine with his prayer. From the power of Saint Spyridon, pagan temples turned to dust. Mothers found their dead babies, and people's bodies were cleansed of diseases and demons tormenting their souls.
Bishop Spyridon also took part in the First Ecumenical Council. With his simple speech, the saint showed everyone the weakness of human wisdom before the wisdom of God. Many Arians, impressed by the speech of Saint Spyridon, abandoned their false teachings and turned from opponents of Christianity into zealous defenders of Orthodoxy.
The wondrous saint of God lived his life in righteousness and holiness and, with prayer on his lips, reposed before the Lord in the year 348 from the Nativity of Christ. And from those ancient times to this day, the prayers of believers ascend to Heaven, asking the great representative before God for help, protection and consolation.
December 25 is the day of remembrance of St. Spyridon of Trimythous.

Glory to Him who gave you strength, glory to Him who crowned you, glory to Him who heals you all.
Healing from Saint Spyridon
Orthodox stories for children. How the merchant deceived himself
What to pray for
They have resorted to the help and intercession of Saint Spyridon from ancient times to the present day to increase the level of well-being: in difficult financial situations, hunger, deprivation of housing, crop failure; and also for healing from illnesses. The great miracle worker refuses to support anyone. Here are some examples.
Health and healing
The modern family lived in a sanctified marriage for more than 9 years, but there were no children. The medical examination did not reveal any pathology. Visits to temples and herbalists did not yield results. The couple made a pilgrimage to Mount Athos. Unsuccessfully. Then they took a vacation and went to the island of Corfu. They began every day by visiting the temple of St. Spyridon of Trimythous, prayed there and soon learned about the happy event.
Solving material problems
The family, in which three children grew up, lived in a communal apartment for many years. They could not improve their living conditions by purchasing square meters. When a room became available in their apartment, they wrote an application to expand their living space and immediately went to the temple. The whole family, including children, prayed in front of the icon of St. Spyridon and after some time received a notice to receive not a room, but a new apartment. When they arrived in surprise to get the documents, the employees began to find out with interest what kind of patron they had turned up “at the top.”
In case of crop failure
The elderly woman, having retired, had no other financial support. The vegetables harvested at her summer cottage played a serious role in her life. When the rains began to rain, threatening to destroy all her work, she turned to Saint Spyridon with prayer. In the morning the clouds cleared, the sun came out, and the huge puddles between the beds disappeared in a few hours.
In difficult life circumstances
The head of the family lost his job, and gradually there was nothing left of his savings. In despair, he remembered that in case of material difficulties he should pray to Saint Spyridon. I read the akathist at night, and a day later I received my first order. And then several more customers responded to his requests. The family got out of the crisis situation.
When making important decisions
The ex-husband and wife separated peacefully, the husband regularly paid child support. But a few years later, after quitting his job, he decided to start his own business and asked his ex-wife to relieve him of his debt for a while. The woman thought about what to do and turned to the saint for help. Having prayed to Saint Spyridon, she started looking for a job for herself, and she succeeded on the first try. And a few months later she began to receive good money from a successful entrepreneur.
Solving legal problems
A family with two children decided to buy an apartment using a Youth Loan. Only while the paperwork was being processed slowly, the age of the head of the family was approaching 36 years, which limited participation in the project. The couple began to pray to Saint Spyridon, and when they arrived at the local church, they immediately saw an icon of the saint in the shop. Having purchased it, they continued their plea until their documents were approved by the commission. Now they already have their own apartment.
What can you ask Spyridon of Trimifuntsky for?
During his lifetime, Spyridon of Trimythous was elected Bishop of Trimitusa, but did not become arrogant, but continued his righteous life, like everyone else, earning his living and food. For his kind disposition, helping loved ones and the miracles he created, he was nicknamed the Wonderworker. After the death of Spyridon, they elevated him to the rank of saint and now they are asking for help in various matters:
- for material well-being;
- for support in business and trade;
- for healing;
- for help with work;
- to solve housing problems.
Prayers to Saint Spyridon are offered at the icon with his face in church or at home with faith in God's power and grace.

Spyridon of Trimifuntsky has long been revered in Rus' to the same extent as Nicholas of Myra (the Pleasant). Many churches own icons of both saints. But Saint Spyridon always evoked special worship in ancient Novgorod and Moscow. In the first half of the 17th century, a church was built in Moscow, consecrated in the name of St. Spyridon, which was lost over time.
Today, the capital's Church of the Resurrection of the Word on the Assumption Vrazhek owns two icons of St. Spyridon with a particle of his relics. In the Danilovsky Monastery in Moscow there is an expensive relic - the shoe of a righteous man, which was donated by the clergy of Cyprus.
In 2013, the saint’s shoe, along with the icon, appeared in the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery in Zvenigorod, this is also a gift. In the fall of 2021, in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, access to the relics of Spyridon of Trimifuntsky was opened for 3 weeks. After which the relic again left for Kofra.
Examples of Prayer
Prayers are performed in silence, in front of the icon of St. Spyridon, at home or in church. They are pronounced from the heart, sincerely, without the goal of harming one’s neighbor. Sitsa, therefore, glorify you, His faithful servant, Lord Christ, for you are given the gift of understanding all the secret human deeds and convicting those who live unrighteously. About work
For a modern person, such life aspects as a successful career, a decent salary, resolving conflict situations, and the attitude of colleagues are extremely important. Saint Spyridon also listens to such requests.

Amen".
To raise money
During his lifetime, Spyridon of Trimifuntsky helped a peasant who did not have money for seeds, and his family was about to die of hunger. The saint turned the snake into a piece of gold and gave it to the petitioner with the condition of repaying the debt. A year later, the happy farmer returned and gave away the gold bar, which the miracle worker again turned into a snake. And today Saint Spyridon does not turn away from those asking him for well-being and improvement of their financial situation.
“O all-blessed Saint Spyridon, great servant of Christ and glorious miracle worker! Stand in Heaven before the Throne of God with the face of an Angel, look with your merciful eye on the people standing here and asking for your strong help. By the power of the Most High, which overshadowed you, to Saint Spyridon, you appeared to be wise and, having squeezed the clay in your hands, you clearly understood the trinity of Persons to everyone; Likewise, the false wisdom of the philosophers who gathered at the Council, horrified, glorified God, who made you wise for salvation, by the faithfulness of the incomprehensible, crying out to Him: Alleluia.
Ikos 3
Having you in their thoughts, all the fathers of the Council are simple, unskilled in book teaching, praying to you, Father Spyridon, not to quarrel with the words of the poet who thinks he is wise. But you, Saint, are inflamed with zeal for God, believing that the preaching of Christ is not in the pretentious wisdom of human words, but in the manifestation of the spirit and power, having convicted him with wisdom, enlightened him and set him on the true path. Everyone who saw this miracle cried out:

You were illuminated by the Divine Spirit, Saint Spyridon, for you had the spirit of wisdom, as you filled the fools with wise words and established the faith among the fathers; the spirit of reason, as you have illuminated darkened minds; the spirit of the fear of God, as if by doing things pleasing to God you have purified your soul. Moreover, having presented yourself to the Throne of the Most High, with a host of angels you sing to Him: Alleluia.
Ikos 9
Having received the rod of the shepherd of verbal sheep from the Chief Shepherd of the Lord Jesus, Saint Spyridon did not change his life: non-covetous, meek, enduring for the sake of love, not being ashamed to care for the flock of wordless sheep. All this excites us to praise God and cry out to you:
Rejoice, you who despise the glory of this world as if it were vain; Rejoice, thou who art richest in Heaven.
Rejoice, red one of this world, imputed to your understanding; Rejoice, vessel of Heavenly blessings.
Rejoice, most holy pasture of the Cypriots; Rejoice, for for your sake God is the predator of your sheep with invisible bonds.
Rejoice, hereby teaching fatherly admonition; Rejoice, by your mercy you gave them the ram for the night spent without sleep.
Rejoice, by the disobedience of a goat, as if the mind of a possessor, a merchant who hid his price, denounced him; Rejoice, you who hid your silver coins led to repentance.
Rejoice, for with your admonition you healed the passions of greed.
Rejoice, Spiridon, wonderful miracle worker.
Kontakion 10
Saving the souls of the flock, entrusted to you by God, you, Saint Spyridon, by the will of God, were called to show your glory, especially the glory of the true God, and to other countries, so that everywhere they glorify the name of God, crying out: Alleluia.
Ikos 10
A quick helper and intercessor in all needs and sorrows, Saint Spyridon, at the command of the Tsar, like other shepherds, came to the city of Antioch, where Tsar Constantine was overcome by illness; Saint I will touch his head and make you healthy. Marveling at this miracle, we cry out to you:
Rejoice, whose angel in a dream vision appeared to the king like a healer; Rejoice, Divine Ones, for the sake of love, having accepted the difficult path in old age.
Rejoice, the king's servant, who struck you on the cheek, according to the commandment of the Savior, substituted the other; Rejoice, pillar of humility.
Rejoice, you who through your prayers have granted health to the Tsar who tearfully asked him; Rejoice, for through your humiliation you taught the slave and changed his unmerciful disposition.
Rejoice, for you taught the king piety and mercy; Rejoice, for you hated earthly treasures and rejected the king’s gold.
Rejoice, for you turned your disciple Trifillia away from addiction to earthly goods and made him a vessel of God’s grace; Rejoice, for I have come to you in Alexandria, fallen idol.
Rejoice, even demons obey him; Rejoice, for you have turned many away from idolatry.
Rejoice, Spiridon, wonderful miracle worker.
Kontakion 11
There was an angelic singing when you offered Thy evening prayers to St. Spyridon in the temple, and those who served with you were not infuriated. The inhabitants of the city, having heard the wondrous singing, entered the temple and, seeing no one, sang with the powers of the Mountain: Alleluia.
Ikos 11
The luminous sun of the world, you were the interlocutor of the angels on earth, Saint Spyridon; Having betrayed your spirit into the hand of God, you moved to the Mountain village, praying for peace before the Throne of the Lord. But we who live on earth cry out to you:
Rejoice, for I am still living, co-serving with you as angels; Rejoice, hearing the psalmody of the Archangels.
Rejoice, visible in the image of our transfiguration; rejoice; Because I lacked oil in the temple, God for your sake fill the lamp with abundance.
Rejoice, lamp of Divine radiance; Rejoice, vessel of God's grace, abundantly like oil filling your soul.
Rejoice, inexhaustible source, ever flowing currents of grace to everyone; Rejoice, for whom the angels are amazed.
Rejoice, you punished the disobedience of the deacon in the temple; Rejoice, you who were vain with your voice and deprived of your voice and tongue.
Rejoice, for during the heat, dew suddenly descended from Above, your sacred head of coolness; Rejoice, in this sign you foresaw the nearness of your repose.
Rejoice, Spiridon, wonderful miracle worker.
Kontakion 12
The protection and refuge of all the faithful who came to you even in your life, you, saint, did not leave us orphans even after your dormition; God, conqueror of nature, keep your holy relics incorruptible to strengthen the Orthodox faith and piety, as a sign of immortality, glorifying Him, we cry: Alleluia.
Ikos 12
We sing praises to you, O saint of God, for you have surprised the world with the miracles flowing from your holy relics. All who come with faith and kiss them receive all the good things they ask for. And we, who have given you strength, who have crowned you with the crown of incorruption, and who through you glorify God, cry out to you:
Rejoice, during the famine you appeared as a shipbuilder and ordered food to be delivered; Rejoice, you who have given sight to the blind, who have flown with faith to your holy relics.
Rejoice, you who healed the youth from the incurable illness; Rejoice, you who cast out the demon from your wife and made her healthy.
Rejoice, chosen governor of Kerkyra; Rejoice, for you drove out the hordes of evil Hagarians and sank their ships into the abyss.
Rejoice, for you saw him surrounded by a host of angels, holding a sword in his right hand and causing his enemies to tremble; Rejoice, build yourself a temple, in which the governor forbids you to celebrate the Liturgy on unleavened bread.
Rejoice, having struck down the Latin governor with cruel death; Rejoice, you who burned his image in a house in Venice with lightning.
Rejoice, you who have put to shame the apostasies and false wisdom of the West; Rejoice, having established the one Orthodox faith to be true and saving for people.
Rejoice, Spiridon, wonderful miracle worker.
Kontakion 13
O most wonderful saint of Christ, Father Spyridon! Our current prayer is accepted, deliver us from all troubles and misfortunes, strengthen our country against our enemies, grant us forgiveness of sins and save from eternal death all those who cry out to God about you: Alleluia.
This kontakion is read three times, then the 1st ikos “Adorned from youth...” and the 1st kontakion “Glorified by the Lord...”.
How to venerate relics correctly
Spyridon of Trimifuntsky is considered a “walking” saint. The saint died in 348 and was buried in his hometown. In the middle of the 15th century, his remains were transported to the island of Corfu, where they are still kept. Over the past years, they have remained undamaged; through the glass of the shrine, believers see not only a small part of the saint, his entire body, hair, and skin are intact. Body temperature is 36.6 degrees, which defies any explanation.
It is believed that Saint Spyridon is not always in cancer; he still cannot calmly hear about human misfortunes, and therefore periodically leaves to help people. This is the only way church ministers can explain the fact that while the state of the relics remains unchanged, the clothes and shoes of St. Spyridon quickly become unusable. They have to be changed every six months.
To venerate the shrine, it is better to free your hands from your bags, tune your thoughts to grace and not fuss. In front of the tomb, you should make two bows from the waist, kiss (kiss or touch your forehead) to the shrine in the area of the arm or leg (but in no case to the face) and make another bow.
How to pray correctly?
Before you start praying to Spyridon the Wonderworker, you should consider a number of rules that must be followed:
- The time for prayer is chosen according to availability: early in the morning or late in the evening. The main condition is that the prayer should be read alone, so that no one can distract or interfere with the action. It is recommended to choose the evening time before bedtime.
- Thoughts during prayer must be pure and sincere, and intentions must exclude the thirst for easy money or the desire to deceive other people.
- It is necessary to focus on what you want without clogging your mind with extraneous thoughts, fears or concerns. It is important to pronounce the text while being calm.
- In order for the request to be heard, the sacred texts should be pronounced in front of the icon of the Saint and in the light of church candles.
- The room should be quiet, and all electrical appliances should be turned off.
Prayers are read to Saint Spyridon every day until what you want is granted. Once a week, preferably on Sunday, it is recommended to visit church in order to offer a prayer service within the walls of the temple.
