Saint Tikhon, Bishop of Amathos |
Tikhon
(Greek: Τύχων; + 425), Bishop of Amathunta, Saint Commemorated June 16
Born in the city of Amafunta on the island of Cyprus. The parents raised their son in Christian piety and taught him to read the Holy Books. The news has been preserved that the gift of miracles was manifested in Saint Tikhon in his youth. His father was the owner of a bakery and sent his son to sell bread. The holy youth distributed bread freely to the poor. Having learned about this, the father was angry, but the son replied that he had read in the holy books that “he who gives to God will receive a hundredfold.” “I,” said the young man, “loan bread to God,” and invited his father to go to where the grain reserves were kept. The father was amazed to see that the storehouse, which was empty, was overflowing with wheat. From then on, the father did not stop the boy from distributing bread to the poor.
One gardener threw out the cut dry branches from the vineyard. Saint Tikhon collected them, planted them in his garden and asked the Lord that these branches would take root and produce fruits that were healing for people’s health. The Lord created a holy young man by faith. The branches began to grow, their fruits had a special, very pleasant taste and were used during the life of the saint and after his death for wine to celebrate the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist.
The pious young man was accepted into the church clergy, made a reader, and then Bishop Mnemonius of Amathunta ordained him to the rank of deacon. After the death of Bishop Mnemonius, Saint Tikhon, by common desire, was elected Bishop of Amathunta. The consecration was presided over by Saint Epiphanius of Cyprus.
Saint Tikhon worked diligently to eradicate the remnants of paganism in Cyprus, destroyed idol temples and planted the Christian faith. The saint was merciful, the doors of his house were open to everyone, he listened with love and fulfilled the requests of everyone who came to him. Without fear of threats and torment, he firmly and fearlessly confessed his faith before the pagans.
The service to Saint Tikhon indicates that he foresaw the time of his death, which followed in 425.
The name of Saint Tikhon of Amafunt was deeply revered in Russia. In honor of the saint, churches were built in Moscow, Nizhny Novgorod, Kazan and other cities.

Saint Tikhon was the son of simple people from Amafunt, a city in the southern part of Cyprus. From childhood he was dedicated to God, grew up in piety and served as a reader. Saint Tikhon's father was a baker. One day he sent his son to the city to sell bread, but Tikhon, fulfilling the words of the Gospel, distributed it to the poor. Upon learning of this, the father flew into a rage. The boy told him that he had only lent bread to the poor and that he would be rewarded for it a hundredfold, for the Lord had promised so. And indeed, upon returning home, they saw that the barns were full of wheat.
After the death of his parents, Saint Tikhon distributed all his property and left worldly concerns in order to take upon himself the easy and sweet yoke of Christ. He came to Bishop Mnemonius, and he, seeing the outstanding qualities of the young man, ordained him a deacon and entrusted him with the management of church property, as well as the instruction of the people. With words filled with the fire of divine love, Saint Tikhon easily exposed the lies of Jews and pagans and brought many of them to the bishop for baptism.
After the death of Mnemonius, Saint Epiphanius (May 12) ordained Saint Tikhon bishop of Amathunt. From then on, Saint Tikhon shone as a true lamp of the Church, convincing some of the truth of the Gospel with irrefutable arguments, and leading others to faith with the help of amazing miracles. He cast out demons, healed the sick in body and spirit - in a word, he made the impossible possible with the help of Divine grace acting through him.
Since some pagans persisted in worshiping false gods, the holy bishop entered their temple and cast down the idols. Holding a whip in his hand, he expelled the priestess of Artemis Anthusa, who showered him with curses. Subsequently, she realized that the saint was assisted by the power of God, confessed Christ and was baptized with the name Evanthia.
Once, during a great competition, which was accompanied by obscene dancing, the pagans staged a procession with a statue of the Cypriot goddess. As they passed by the church, Saint Tikhon came out, smashed the statue and exposed the superstitions of the pagans so clearly that they all turned and wished to be baptized.
Another time, the holy bishop, accused by the pagans Calicius and Cleopatra, had to appear before the ruler of the island. He answered the official that he was a servant of a man-loving God and could not help but be like Him and have compassion for all those who are in the darkness of error, therefore he must preach to them that there is only One true God. Saint Tikhon added that he treats the pagans as sick people whom the Lord entrusts him with healing, and that he is ready to endure insults and bad treatment from them, for this is just a faint shadow of the suffering that the Lord endured for the sake of our Salvation. The judge was impressed by the calm confidence of the saint and ordered his release, and many of the judge's assistants who were present at the conversation turned to faith.
Saint Tikhon had a field on which he planted a vineyard. One day, shortly before leaving this world, Saint Tikhon came there to watch how the winegrowers worked, pruning dry shoots. He picked up one of these shoots, prepared for burning, and turned to the Lord with prayer, asking that the shoot come to life and bear abundant sweet fruits ahead of time. Then Saint Tikhon planted him in the ground and told the parishioners that this miracle would always happen, as a sign of the constant invisible presence of their shepherd and his vigilant prayers. Indeed, after the death of the saint, every year on the eve of the day of his memory - June 16 - the grapes, which had previously been green, as usual at this time of year, quickly ripened during the all-night vigil, became dark and juicy, and during the Divine Liturgy their juice was mixed to the Holy Gifts. Christians took the grains of these grapes to themselves to bless their vineyards and heal the sick.
When the Lord revealed to Tikhon the day of his death, the saint went to visit the peasants working in the fields harvesting barley. They approached under the blessing and heard an unearthly voice calling the saint to the heavenly abodes. Three days later, the one who for many years had raised the afflicted from their sick beds with his prayers was stricken with illness. He consoled his mother, who was crying at his bedside, and reminded her that while living on earth, we must hope only for the resurrection. Then Saint Tikhon gathered his spiritual children, priests and laity, and praised the dignity of Christians who became sons of God and brothers of Christ, called to follow Him, not deceived by the temptations of this world. For three days the holy shepherd was bedridden, then the heavenly faces joyfully received him.
All of Cyprus mourned his death. During the burial, which was performed by all the Cypriot bishops and priests in the presence of a huge number of people, the body of St. Tikhon radiated radiance and exuded a wonderful fragrance.
Saint Tikhon, as promised, did not abandon his flock, but fulfilled prayer requests. He healed a woman from leprosy and saved a deaf-mute boy possessed by a demon. It was like that. The child’s parents prayed for a long time for his healing in the Church of St. Tikhon, but their request was not fulfilled. They believed that their sins were to blame and went away in sorrow. Then Saint Tikhon appeared to them under the guise of a priest and asked them not to give up prayer. At this time, the demon violently shook the boy and came out of him, exclaiming: “Oh Tikhon! God’s favor towards you drives me away,” and the child spoke calmly and purely.

July 13 commemoration of the Venerable Iliophots: Iliophot, Epaphroditus, Ammonius, Khulelei, Eusthenius.
Not far from the Nicosia village of Kato Moni is the abandoned village of Agii Iliofota with a church of the same name on a mountain called Corona. Previously, there was a monastery on that site, as evidenced by the modern name of the village Kato Moni. Until 1974, this village was exclusively inhabited by Turkish Cypriots who were deported after the invasion of Turkish troops, but the name of the village, as well as the abundance of shrines, speak of the Christian roots of the local residents.
Unfortunately, the sources of the life of the Venerable Iliophotov are very scarce. Leontius Macheras, a 15th-century chronicler, includes them among the 300 monk Alamans who came to Cyprus from Palestine in the 7th century, fleeing persecution by Arab conquerors. In addition, the library of the monastery of St. Catherine in Sinai contains a manuscript (Sinait. gr. 627) of the service to the saints, which was published in 2002 by the monk Chariton. (?? ηταί Ηλιόφωτος Αυξουθένιος "" (2002).
From this text it follows that the saints came from Palestine Phenicia (modern Lebanon). For some time they served in the army of Emperor Theodosius. After meeting Saint Epiphanius of Cyprus, they decided to leave their service and settle on the island to indulge in monastic life.
On the icon, the Monk Iliophot is depicted as a priest, with Blades and Epaphroditus standing on the sides with a shepherd’s staff. In folk tradition, saints are mentioned as shepherds of goats and sheep, who helped local residents with the labor of their hands in difficult times. Folk tradition says that there is a preserved place where the saints made dairy products, called γαλευτήριο in the Cypriot dialect. Through the prayers of the saints, a spring began to flow in a local village during a drought. The saints lived in a cave. There is no clear legend about their death. According to one tradition, they were killed by the ruler of Cyprus, Savin, who persecuted Christians at the beginning of the 4th century; according to another, they suffered from Arab raids in 648.
The modern church in honor of the saints was built in 1750.

Cyprus Synaxarium - Venerable Athanasius Pentaschinite

July 10 commemoration of St. Athanasius Pentaschinite. Available sources do not allow us to accurately indicate the time of the saint’s life. Not far from Larnaca, near the village of Agios Theodoros, there once existed the village of Pentashinos, which stood on the river of the same name. Here are the ruins of an ancient church of the 7th century in honor of St. Athanasius.
In 2004, archaeologists found the saint's tomb, in which animal bones were buried. Probably, the one who in ancient times found the relics of the saint left other bones in their place, so as not to arouse suspicion of stealing the shrine. There are two passages in the floor of the temple, which, according to legend, once led to the sea harbor. The temple was destroyed by a strong earthquake on October 21, 1491. The German traveler, Bavarian Duke Alexander tells about this. According to popular legend, the inhabitants of Pentaskhin, due to constant raids, moved away from the sea to the settlement site, which today is called Agios Theodoros. The 15th-century Cypriot writer Leontius Macheras reports on numerous miracles that occurred in his time through the prayers of the saint. The surviving iconographic images of the saint in the Amasgus monastery near the village of Monagri, the church of St. Sozomen in Galatea, as well as St. Mamanta in the village Louvaras depict a young saint in deacon's vestments. In the village of Agios Theodoros, a 19th-century icon has been preserved, where the saint is depicted tending sheep.

St. Ep. Tikhon of Amafuntsky
Prayer
O Saint of Christ, blessed Father Tikhon, quick-presenting helper and faithful intercessor, representative of the weak, healer of the sick and saving prayer book! Trying to answer our weak prayer, beg Christ the Lord our God to turn all wrath upon us and upon our country, driven by the instigation of the devil; With your prayers, guide the good, pacify the hostiles, protect Christians from worldly rebellion, invasion of foreigners and internecine warfare, from famine, cowardice, flood, fire, sword and sudden death. Deliver us from perishing in the swamps of the waking and destructive serpent, entangled in the mud of sin; deliver us from the passions of those who are bogged down in the quagmire of the devil's deception and the vile evil spirits of sin, sliding into the darkness of demons. Reveal hope for correction of bitter deeds, ignite our souls with the oil of faith, with the fire of grace of those who are fading, direct our love unwaveringly to the Triune God, the Life-Giving Trinity: the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Growing the treasures of Christ's flock, turning away from the goats, and now we do not abandon our own, and having plucked out the ancient Belial, we will freely sing: Hallelujah. Ikos 8
You have grown spiritual fruits as a nutritious tree, as a vine of truth; you have seemed like a strange vinedresser; You gathered those of little faith and gave them the Word of life to drink. Moreover, the breath of the Creator is even more important and His rejection, but we, who have accepted God’s likeness, sing with the fear of God, as if God hears: Hallelujah. Ikos 9
The branches, which are multifarious and superstitious, cannot broadcast many miracles of outflow, as they are not poured out through such lips, but as having Tikhon, the image of Christ our God, who fills everything; everyone cries out in gratitude: Rejoice, intercession is speedy at the throne of God; Rejoice, intercession before the Holy Trinity; Rejoice, seeker of vicious living; Rejoice, strict reproacher of greed. The priests serving and the people extol you in joy: Hallelujah. Ikos 10
You are the wall of virtues for your children, blessed Tikhon, and for everyone who comes running to you: for you have appeared to be a wise steward of God. For this reason, we faithfully cry out to God’s miraculous intercession for us: Rejoice, chamber of thanksgiving to God; Rejoice, cover of the temple buildings; Rejoice, understanding of unimaginable miracles; Rejoice, healing for the paralytic and the lepers. Singing your dormition to God, as if you foreknew your departure, to Saint Tikhon, we honor your blessed memory. And now you show your help to desperate people: you open springs with the flow of water, for fear I will heal all flesh, the Lord listens to you, the demons tremble at you; We, triumphantly and lovingly sing: Rejoice, you who resurrect the dead and the dry; Rejoice, thou who fillest the springs with the waters of life; Rejoice, desperate salvation! Rejoice, healing on puss and scabs. Rejoice, radiance of the Triune Light; Rejoice, hope of pious advice; Rejoice, you who want to cause the end of life to stumble; Rejoice, banishment of evil intentions. Rejoice to the Holy Hierarch Father Tikhon, glorious wonderworker of Amathus Kontakion 13
Oh, Saint of Christ, blessed Father Tikhon! Receive our songs of praise, offered up to you with love, look down from the heights of heaven upon us, our weak petitions cast down to the ground, and beg the Lord our God, so that we may replenish the impoverished faith and have strong faith, that we may be freed from the bitter burning of the work of the enemy, and be honored with you, and with All the saints sing to Him: Hallelujah. Pilgrimage trip

July 21, 2021 Dear brothers and sisters, we invite you to a pilgrimage trip, which will take place after the Sunday Liturgy on August 1.
Departure from the temple at approximately 10:30. Trip program:
Church in honor of the Mother of God of Panagia Arak, built at the end of the 12th century. The paintings were carried out by the icon painter Theodore Apsevdi in 1192, who had previously painted the cave cell (englistra) of St. Neophyte the Recluse in 1183. However, part of the apse dates back to an earlier date. On the outer side of the wall, part of the frescoes has been preserved, which are surrounded by a covered gallery. In 1735, Vasily Barsky visited the monastery, and then he met three monks here. Since 1985, the temple has been under the auspices of UNESCO.
The Temple of the Holy Cross of Agiazmati was built at the end of the 14th century. The frescoes of the temple were painted by Philip Gul in 1494, whose brush also belongs to the Church of St. Mamanta in the village of Luvaras. Vasily Barsky, who visited the shrine in 1735, met only one monk here. On August 1, the temple celebrates its patronal feast day.
Church of St. Nicholas under the roof of Kakopetria. The refectory part of the church from the 11th century is the only surviving church from the late Byzantine period. The porch and side limits were built in the 12th and 13th centuries respectively. Parts of the frescoes from the 11th and 12th centuries survive, although most of the surviving paintings date from the 13th century.
