THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE ICON “SOLEMN”

In the Moscow region, in the village of Kolomenskoye, the Russian Orthodox people in 1917 saw the appearance of the Most Holy One.

The phenomenon coincided with the abdication of the throne of Nicholas II. The history of the acquisition of the Sovereign Icon of the Mother of God

At the beginning of the 20th century, one of the administrative units of the Moscow region was Bronnitsky district. It included a settlement called Pererva, formed around the Nikolo-Perervinsky monastery. At the beginning of 1917, one of the residents of the settlement, a devout peasant woman Evdokia Adrianova, began to see persistently recurring dreams. The Mother of God appeared to her in them and commanded her to go to the palace village of Kolomenskoye to find a “black” icon there and make a “red” one out of it.

The peasant woman obeyed and went to Kolomenskoye to the rector of the Ascension Church there. Under his leadership, a search began, and in one of the church basements an old board, completely blackened by soot and dirt, with a paint layer barely visible, was discovered.

Realizing that in front of him there might be that same “black” icon, the abbot ordered it to be cleared. When the outlines of a scarlet maforium and the face of the Virgin Mary emerged from under the mud, he immediately sent a report to the Metropolitan.

The day the icon was found was March 2 according to the old style (or the 15th according to the new style). Surprisingly, on the same day, the autocracy fell in Russia. On March 2 (15), 1917, Emperor Nicholas II signed the abdication of the throne.

The image on the icon of the Mother of God Sovereign belongs to the canon of “Constantinople” icons, painted, apparently, at the end of the 18th century. The icon was updated in the workshops of the Moscow Alekseevsky Monastery - the vestments of the Virgin Mary are written in red.

During Soviet times, the icon of the Mother of God Sovereign was kept in the storerooms of the Historical Museum; in 1990 it was returned to the Church - now the original image is in the Kazan Church in Kolomenskoye. But it’s not only there that you can venerate the revered lists.

Holy Prayer to the Sovereign Icon of the Mother of God

O Sovereign Lady, Most Holy Theotokos, holding in Her arms the Heavenly King who contains the entire universe! We thank You for Your ineffable mercy, for You have deigned to show us, sinners, this holy, miraculous icon of Yours in these days. We thank Thee, for Thou hast looked down from Thy holy height upon the children of the Orthodox, and, like the bright sun, Thou hast gladdened our eyes, now exhausted from sorrow, with the sweet vision of Thy sovereign image! O Most Blessed Mother of God, Sovereign Helper, Strong Intercessor, thanking Thee, with fear and trembling, as slaves of indecency, we fall, with tenderness, with heartfelt contrition, with tears we pray to Thee: root in the hearts of all of us the truth, peace and joy about Dus Holy ones, bring peace, prosperity, serenity, and unfeigned love for each other to our country! O Intercessor of the world, Mother of All Singing, with fear, faith and love, bowing down before Your honorable Sovereign icon, we earnestly pray to You: do not turn Your face away from those who resort to You, beseech, Merciful Mother of Light, Your Son and our God, the Sweetest Lord Jesus Christ, may he preserve our country in peace, may he establish our state in prosperity, may he deliver us from internecine warfare and strengthen our Holy Orthodox Church, may he preserve her unshakably from unbelief, schism and heresies. There are no other imams of help, no other imams of hope, except You, Most Pure Virgin: You are the All-Powerful Intercessor of Christians before God, softening His righteous anger. Deliver all who pray to You with faith from the falls of sin, from the slander of evil people, from hunger, sorrow and disease. The fate of the icon in the 20th century

At that time, many holy icons were destroyed by militant atheists, but this time the Lord did not allow trouble to happen. After the closure of the church, the Mother of God image “Sovereign” was safely hidden in the storerooms of the Moscow Historical Museum, where it spent the entire period of hard times. He returned to Kolomenskoye in 1990, when the perestroika processes radically changed the state’s attitude towards religion. It is still there today, but not in the Ascension Church, as it was in former times, but in Kazan Church.

There is a belief according to which Russia will overcome all difficulties and once again shine with its greatness when, finally, the icon of its sovereign ruler takes its former place. Well, that day is not far off, and hope does not leave the hearts of Russians.

History of the image “Sovereign”

The modern history of the image began in 1917, when Emperor Nicholas II abdicated the throne. According to legend, a resident of the village of Kolomenskoye, Evdokia Adrianova, had the same dream several times the day before, in which she was instructed to find the above-mentioned icon. Not knowing what to do, the peasant woman turned to the rector of the local church, Father Nikolai Likhachev, who agreed to help her. First, the church itself was carefully examined, and when the search did not produce results, they went down to the basement. It was there, covered with a thick layer of dust, that the image of the Mother of God that the woman dreamed of was kept.

The modern history of the image began in 1917

Rumors about the found Holy Face quickly spread throughout the country, and pilgrims began to flock to it. Later he visited the Marfo-Mariinsky Convent, where Princess Elizaveta Fedorovna herself bowed before him. So the “Sovereign” icon began to wander to different churches, and on holidays to return home to Kolomenskoye.
