Worthy to eat

It is worthy to eat as you truly bless Thee, the Mother of God, the Ever-Blessed and Most Immaculate and the Mother of our God. We magnify You, the most honorable Cherub and the most glorious without comparison Seraphim, who gave birth to God the Word without corruption, the real Mother of God.

Last refuge

There are situations when it seems that there is simply no hope for forgiveness from God. But you should never think like that - as long as a person breathes, he can repent and receive remission of sins. It is for such cases that there is an akathist in honor of the icon “Seeking the Lost.” It should be read after serious offenses. It is no coincidence that the image received such a name. This story clearly shows that even the most serious sin, in case of repentance, can be forgiven.

  • In the distant past, there lived a priest. He had a good position, and then was chosen as a bishop. But the man put in his place was not so generous. He took his opponent's job. Then the dismissed man, whose name was Theophilus, decided on an evil deed. Through friends he found a sorcerer and sold his soul to the prince of darkness. In return, he received the rank of bishop and success in worldly affairs.

So many years passed until one day Theophilus’s heart was touched by repentance. He realized that he had betrayed Christ, the Mother of God - everything that he had once lived by. Fasting and prayer henceforth became his main occupations. It would seem that what could be worse than apostasy from the faith, isn’t that what Judas did? But the difference is that Judas did not repent, and therefore his end was terrible. Deep repentance brought to God will not go unnoticed.

The monk tirelessly prayed to the Mother of God in front of her image for forgiveness, until one day she appeared to him in a dream. The Most Holy Virgin gave the monk his contract, and from then on he realized that he was forgiven. This story happened in the 7th century, the akathist in honor of the icon “Seeking the Lost” was written much later, but church tradition has conveyed the story of disobedience and repentance to the present day. She teaches a lot - to be patient with what seems unfair. Through this, the Lord is trying to teach people a lesson in obedience.

“Recovery of the Lost” is one of the images where a deep emotional connection is visible between the Child and the Mother. There are two known versions of the version; there are noticeable differences between them. The akathist can be read before any option.

  • 1st type (from Tarusa): The Baby stands to the right of the Mother, his left hand hugs Mary’s neck. The right one lies near the neck of her outfit. The faces of Christ the Mother of God do not touch. The Virgin Mary's hands hold Jesus, but the fingers are not clasped, the palms remain in a prayerful gesture. The baby rests on a kind of stand, on which a prayer inscription is usually written. The head of the Virgin Mary is covered with an omophorion.
  • 2nd type (from the Rakovsky Monastery): The Child bowed his head to Mary’s cheek. The Ever-Virgin's hands clasp the Baby, her fingers are intertwined, as if She does not want to let go of the Son. The Virgin Mary sits, and Jesus stands on straight legs, leaning on the Mother. His left leg is slightly to the side. The hair of the Mother of God is visible from under the scarf; in some versions, She is without a headdress at all (a rather rare case in Orthodox iconography).

In the second option, the influence of Western style is clearly visible. But there is nothing to be afraid of, since the icon is recognized as canonical. The image has been known since the 12th century; it began to circulate in Russia in the 13th century. Can be supplemented with figures of angels and landscapes. It is unknown which icon of “Seeking the Lost” the compiler of the akathist prayed in front of. This is not of fundamental importance - the request will be heard.
