In addition to the convent, cathedrals and churches, there are holy springs in Diveyevo. The most revered of them is the spring of St. Seraphim, which is next to the Sarovka River.

In 1993, a wooden chapel was built next to the miraculous spring, which was consecrated by Patriarch Alexy II. People come to the Diveyevo Monastery for various reasons.

Some - to pray and cleanse the soul, others - to fulfill their desires, others - to see with their own eyes the place where Seraphim of Sarov lived and preached, to venerate his relics.

All these people have one thing in common: everyone takes away from these places peace and light in their souls. Agree, this is a lot!

Holy springs

There are also sources of holy water on the territory of the monastery:

  • Source of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God

It is considered the oldest source of the monastery. A chapel and a well have always stood on this site. Prayers were held within the walls of the chapel, and a stream flowing from under the wall was a constant source of water.

Before the war, the chapel was destroyed, and under it an icon of the Mother of God was discovered. For a long time it was kept by a local resident; now the relic has been transferred to the Trinity Cathedral;

  • Source of St. Seraphim

According to local legend, this spring was destined to exist. In the mid-twentieth century, it was planned to make the area of the source a protected zone. Approaching the place of the future source, the soldiers saw an old man in white, who looked at them, smiled, hit the ground with his staff, and water gushed out.

After this, it was repeatedly decided to fill up the source, but something always prevented this: either the car would break down, or bad weather. Thus, the source still exists. On holidays, services are held here;

  • Source of Alexandra Diveevskaya

According to numerous testimonies, after the death of the founder of the monastery, amazing things happened at her grave and incredible healings took place.

Soon local residents began to consider the spring that suddenly appeared under the mountain to be the source of Mother Alexandra.

Origin of the name and its meaning

The appearance of the main shrine of the village of Diveevo is associated with the name of a simple girl, a native of Ryazan, Agafya Semyonovna Melgunova, who moved to Kyiv with her husband. She, who in her youth had devoted her heart to Christ, after the death of her husband, took monastic vows under the name of Alexander and received the patronage of the Most Holy Theotokos.

Soon after her tonsure, the woman saw the divine image of the Mother of the Lord in front of her. In her holy revelation, she called the virgin to a great pilgrimage to all the monasteries and monasteries built in her honor. Agafya’s goal was to find a place where a women’s monastery, unique in its beauty and grandeur, could be located, which could become the main stronghold and place of worship of the Most Holy Theotokos.

Mother Alexandra, with a humble heart, accepted the divine commission and set off on her journey. In the north of Russia, in the Novgorod lands, when the nun’s strength was already exhausted and only her vow and prayer supported her spirit, the Mother of God appeared a second time and pointed her palm to the place where Alexandra stood.

It was here, on the hills of the village of Diveevo, that the greatest in its beauty convent in honor of the Holy Trinity was founded. Mother Alexandra became the first abbess of the monastery.

Ensemble of the Diveevo Monastery

The architectural ensemble of the Diveevo Monastery was created over many years, and represents a unique fusion of Byzantine and Russian styles. The entrance to the complex passes through a small street and opens with a massive gate. On the left hand of the entrance, pilgrims are greeted by a ditch made by Seraphim of Sarov himself.

The chronicle says that it was through this place that the Mother of God herself passed, appearing to him during prayer. This man-made evidence of a miraculous phenomenon is not just a path, but one of the shrines of the monastery. As they walk along it, they read the prayer “Virgin Mother of God, rejoice!” 100 times. Loud conversations and small talk are considered indecent in this place.

Near the ditch there is a mill and residential buildings for nuns.

On the right side there is a beautiful view of two majestic cathedrals: Spaso-Preobrazhensky and Trinity. Both of them have the appearance of a cross-domed structure, richly decorated with carved stone elements and unique mosaics. Architecture lovers will be amazed by the external simplicity and grandeur of these two temples. Their interior corresponds to the external design.

Trinity Cathedral opens its massive doors early in the morning, forcing those entering it to admire the beauty of its unique frescoes, gold frames and ancient icons. The high walls with paintings describing biblical events, the light streaming from large windows and the golden two-tiered royal doors amaze with their humble grandeur.

The cathedral has light shades and the feeling of air and Divine grace in it does not disappear throughout the entire stay. The Transfiguration Cathedral is more original. The walls are decorated with openwork Russian paintings with characteristic curls and foliage patterns. Soft, warm tones predominate.

Carved wooden frames of icons in combination with gilded royal doors create an atmosphere of domestic tranquility and reverent faith in forgiveness. Both cathedrals are surrounded by well-kept flower beds and rock gardens. They are watched over by the nuns and novices of the monastery. At the request of pilgrims, their personal inclusion in this work is possible. You can offer help by contacting the temple duty officer.

Further, the territory of the monastery is continued by the refectory temple of Alexander Nevsky and cozy gazebos. Next to the temple grows a unique birch tree, planted by Saint Seraphim himself.

Story

The monastic chronicle testifies that the year of foundation of the Seraphim Diveyevo monastery is 1760.
Mother Alexandra, known in worldly life as Agafya Semyonovna Melgunova, lost her husband early and decided to devote her whole life to God.

Having taken monastic vows, she served at the Kiev-Florovsky Monastery.

One day, after a night vigil, she received a vision in which the Most Holy Theotokos announced to her the need to found a new holy monastery.

Having indicated the direction of the path - to the north, the Lady called on the nun to go on a journey. Agafya immediately began to fulfill the command of the Virgin Mary, having received a blessing from her confessor.

While on the road, not far from Sarov, Alexandra decided to take a break. The vision was repeated again: the Mother of God informed her that this was the very place designated for the founding of the monastery.

The establishment of the Seraphim Diveyevo Monastery began only in 1773, when the foundation of the Kazan Church was laid near a rural wooden church at the nun’s own expense.

By 1780 it was consecrated by Father Pachomius.

Having asked a local landowner for land plots, Alexandra built a house where she settled with the other four novices.

This community was called Kazan, all the sisters lived observing the strict Sarov charter. By 1789, young Seraphim took charge of the community, and gradually the number of novices increased to 40.

It is important to know! All active monasteries in the Moscow region with miraculous icons

In 1826, not far from the Kazan community, with the blessing of Seraphim, Melnichnaya was founded. It consisted exclusively of girls who inhabited the Kazan community. The landowner Manturov, whom Saint Seraphim healed of a terrible illness, took part in the construction of the monastery.

Another interlocutor of Seraphim of Sarov and patron of the Diveyevo monastery was the high-born nobleman Nikolai Motovilov, he was also healed by the elder and for many years contributed to the organization of the life of the monastery.

He was the first biographer of the saint and called himself “a servant of Seraphim.” To provide food for the sisters, a mill was built, which gave the name to the community.

Already by the beginning of the twentieth century, the Seraphim Diveyevo Monastery, the photo of which captivates the imagination, was inhabited by 270 nuns and 1,474 novices.

If we consider that the population of the village was only 520 people, then we can appreciate the full scale of the buildings.

It was not possible to make changes to the way of monastic life in 1919, although the Seraphim Diveevo Monastery was registered as a labor artel.

Unfortunately, on September 21, 1927, the churches would be closed. The sisters will settle nearby, trying to somehow preserve the valuable shrines.

After a long period of stagnation, the revival of churches began only in 1988. The official website tells in detail how the Seraphim Diveyevo Monastery was revived.
