History of construction

For a long time, residents of the Teply Stan region dreamed of having their own church, where they could come and feel peace. Since the mid-1990s, the most active of them have visited various city authorities to obtain permission to erect the desired religious building. The people showed great desire to help in this noble cause.

Since there was never a house of God in Teply Stan, many local parishioners visited churches in neighboring areas.

  • The construction of the church was blessed by Patriarch Alexy II, the building was transferred to the management of the Mikhailovsky Deanery. They decided to consecrate God’s house to the glory of the Great Martyr Anastasia, who lived in the 4th century and became famous for her care of those who suffered for the Christian faith. The Lord rewarded the saint with the gift of healing, as she selflessly served the will of the Almighty Creator. Anastasia was nicknamed the “Pattern Maker,” that is, capable of liberating from the bonds of sinfulness and bodily illness. Pregnant women and prisoners often turn to her for prayers.
  • Archpriest George showed great participation in the creation of the church parish. The monk, together with assistants from the Cathedral of Michael the Archangel, served prayers and akathists at a time when there was no foundation on the site of the temple. The parish meeting began its activities at the beginning of 1997. The first lay people came to the vacant lot where the construction was planned, read prayers, and held funeral services.
  • Since 1999, Archpriest Boris, who had the position of cleric of the church at the Vagankovskoye cemetery, was appointed rector of the not yet built church. The saint left his work at his main place of service, visited the wasteland in Teply Stan and conducted church ceremonies. Father Boris was remembered by some parishioners for his responsiveness and gentle disposition.
  • In 2002, a worship cross and a hut were installed, where an akathist was held in honor of the new church. Charitable people donated money, as well as concrete and cement. In mid-summer 2002, Archpriest Anatoly laid the first stone of the temple.
  • In 2003, Priest Alexander was appointed parish rector. Soon the first liturgy was held in the newly created church, which marked the full life of God’s house in Teply Stan.

The examination was carried out by specialists from the scientific research examination, they confirmed the authenticity of the shrine and the bishop's typo. The opening of the reliquary took place in the presence of scientists and Archpriest Arkady; one of the particles was handed over for worship to believers in the temple of the Great Martyr Anastasia.

Since 2021, the church has housed a fragment of the remains of St. Nikander of Gorodnoezersk, whose memory is celebrated on March 15.

History of the temple

The first wooden church in honor of the saint revered by believers appeared in Pskov in 1487.

It was placed as a “votive” one day after a long plague epidemic ended in the city. In the Middle Ages in Russia and Europe they did not yet know how to fight the “pestilence”, so terrible diseases wiped out the population of cities and villages by tens of thousands. It is curious that the Pskov legend was published more than once in pre-revolutionary local history literature that the temple was erected by Vasily Dol in memory of his wife and daughter, who bore the name Anastasia.

Information about at what time the wooden building was replaced by a stone temple has not been preserved, but it is known that in the first half of the 16th century it was already standing.

The Pskov Chronicle for 1538 talks about a big fire, during which 12 churches burned down. The temple in Kuznetsy was also damaged. The roof collapsed and four people died in the fire.

In 1639, a chapel was added to the north of the church and consecrated in honor of Paraskeva Pyatnitsa. When church reform began at the end of the 18th century, they wanted to close the dilapidated temple. However, it was preserved and assigned first to the Church of St. Basil on Gorka, and then to the nearby Novovoznesensk Church.

At the beginning of the 19th century, the question of closing the church again arose, but the parishioners loved their temple so much that they sent a petition to the emperor. Because of their intercession, it was decided not to touch the old building and maintain it with private donations. Using money raised by parishioners, they plastered the walls, replaced the floors, ordered a new carved iconostasis, and replaced the worn plank roof with an iron one.

In the 1880s, the Church of Anastasia the Pattern Maker was again reconstructed. Several ovens were installed in it, and, thanks to heating, church services began to be held not only in the warm season, but also in winter. In addition, the builders covered the porch on the bell tower with frames and doors on three sides, covered the altars with iron and replaced the dilapidated dome with a new, but smaller one.

At the beginning of the last century, following general progress, electric lighting appeared in the temple. The priests who served in the church carried out great public work. They collected local history relics, studied the history of Pskov, worked in the city Statistical Committee and organized singing festivals.

Until 1932, regular services were held in the church, but then the city Union of Militant Atheists ensured that the road to the church was closed to believers. During the Great Patriotic War, when the Germans occupied Pskov, and then there were battles for its liberation, the ancient temple was damaged. The roof, external walls and church interiors were damaged by shots and shell explosions.

In 1960, the church was recognized as an architectural and historical monument and taken under state protection.

The old building was renovated and given to the regional scientific library, which for a long time used it as a book depository.

In 2004, the temple was transferred to the parish community. However, the library could not find a suitable room for its books, and the religious building was finally vacated only in 2006. After this, a period of repair and restoration work began. The builders redid the electrical and heating systems in the church, completely re-laid the old floors, whitewashed the walls, replaced the windows and installed a new iconostasis. Church services here resumed in 2007, and two years later, the money raised was used to restore the chapel, consecrated in honor of Paraskeva Pyatnitsa.

Temple complex

Due to the insufficient capacity of the Church of the Great Martyr Anastasia, the construction of a large cathedral and additional extensions began in 2009. In 2012, Bishop Irinarh performed the rite of consecration of the temple complex in honor of the Kaluga image of the Blessed Virgin.

  • According to the architectural plan, the building will have three domes, five apses and a bell tower. It was decided to erect the building in the style of Moscow architecture of the 16th century. The lower tier will house office space. The large temple is designed for 900 people, its area will be 1150 m2.
  • The main construction work has been completed, and wall plastering and painting are planned for summer 2021. The timing is due to the fact that the brickwork must withstand a certain time without additional processing. The large church of the Kaluga Icon has been prepared for the rite of minor consecration; a temporary iconostasis has already been installed here and the necessary church utensils have been brought.

The construction of a large cathedral next to the Church of Anastasia the Patternmaker is proceeding at a slow pace, since the complex is being built with donations from the laity; the project has no major benefactors. In addition, the new cathedral is being built according to a complex architectural plan, and the technological process requires a pause.

On a note! The parish council appeals to Orthodox believers with an offer to take whatever part they can in the construction of the temple complex, because this is a labor-intensive task, but it will save the soul. Only through joint efforts will the residents of Teply Stan have the opportunity to come to the vast and elegant temple for Christian celebrations. The benefactors will be recognized by the Russian Orthodox Church as people who have accomplished great deeds for the glory of the Kingdom of the Lord.

Architectural features

The ancient temple has the status of a monument of federal significance and embodies the best traditions of Pskov temple architecture. According to ancient architectural canons, the facades of the main volume and the aisle are divided into parts by blades, and the apses of the altar and the drum are decorated with a pattern with a curb and a runner.

The church can be considered two-tiered, since it stands on a powerful vaulted basement floor. The quadrangle rests on four pillars and has three apses. It is crowned with one dome mounted on a high light drum. The quadrangle is covered with a hipped roof, and the gallery and aisle have flat roofs.

The tiered bell tower, the architecture of the vestibule and the roof were made in the traditions of classicism during the reconstruction of the temple in the first half of the 19th century. A stone two-level bell tower replaced the old temple belfry in 1819.

It was built with money donated by the wealthy landowner and owner of the Governor's House, Valueva. The bell tower has open belfries and is completed in the form of a dome with a high spire.
