Pafnutev-Borovsky Monastery

- Orthodox monastery in the Kaluga region. Founded in 1444, closed in 1919, returned to the Church in 1991. There is a hotel at the monastery.

History[edit]

Pafnuty Borovsky

The history of the St. Paphnutev Monastery is inextricably linked with different stages of the formation of Russian statehood; many of the serious historical events are reflected in the chronicle of the monastery. The history of the founding of the monastery became an echo of the Mongol-Tatar invasion: as is known, the grandfather of the Monk Paphnutius was a Tatar who was baptized into Orthodoxy with the name Martin and laid the foundation for a pious family from which the future “lamp” of the Orthodox faith emerged.

The monastery was founded by the Monk Paphnutius of Borovsk in 1444 on a hill at the confluence of the Istrema River and the Protva River. After the death of Paphnutius, his disciple, the Monk Joseph of Volokolam, became the abbot of the monastery, who soon, due to the reluctance of the brethren to accept the cenobitic charter, went to the Volokolamsk principality and founded a new monastery - the Joseph-Volokolamsk Monastery.

On the site of the first wooden Nativity Church, a white-stone Nativity Cathedral was built in 1467 (not preserved). The painting of the first Cathedral of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary of the Pafnutievo-Borovsky Monastery is the earliest known work of the great icon painter Dionysius: according to the life of the Monk Paphnutius, Dionysius completed the painting under the supervision of the elder of the Simonov Monastery - the icon painter Mitrofan.

After 117 years, in 1586, the cathedral was almost completely dismantled, and in its place, by the will of Tsar Fyodor Ivanovich, a new, five-domed one was erected; Blocks with 15th-century paintings were used in the masonry of its foundation. Thus, fragments of the painting of Mitrofan and Dionysius have survived to this day (they are in the Central Museum of Ancient Russian Culture and Art named after Andrei Rublev in Moscow and the Borovsky branch of the Kaluga State Regional Museum).

In the 16th century, the monastery was surrounded by stone walls and fortifications; the monastery turned into a strong border fortress. At this time, a stone refectory with a temple in the name of the Nativity of Christ was also built. A belfry was built in 1523

The spiritual authority of the Monk Paphnutius attracted many people to the monastery. At different times, the Grand Dukes Vasily II, Ivan III, Vasily III, Tsars Ivan IV the Terrible, Fyodor Ivanovich, Mikhail Romanov and Alexei Mikhailovich, the Lykov-Obolensky, Repnin, Volkonsky princes came to the monastery more than once on pilgrimage.

During the Time of Troubles, the monastery found itself on the path of the Polish-Lithuanian invaders led by False Dietrios II and became the scene of bloody events, as a result of which the feat of the Orthodox defenders of the monastery shone through the centuries, and the city of Borovsk received a new coat of arms. The events of the church schism, which were painfully experienced by the Church, also affected the monastery - the main ideological inspirer of the old church order, Archpriest Avvakum, was twice kept in custody within the walls of the Pafnutevo monastery.

The location of the monastery on the path of the army of the “twelve tongues” led by Napoleon in 1812 resulted in the looting and partial destruction of the monastery.

Great Patriotic War 1941-1945 also left a mark on the history of the monastery: it was again destroyed and plundered, but managed to survive and be reborn. The Soviet era had perhaps the most negative impact on the monastery.

After the nationalization of the monastery and the expulsion of the monks in 1919, the monastery was practically turned into ruins over the thirty years of Soviet rule.

The restorers who began restoring the monastery in the 60s of the 20th century faced many difficulties: they had to pour new foundations, restore walls, restore churches and buildings.

The modern history of the Pafnutievo monastery began in 1991 with the return of monks to the monastery and the resumption of regular services.

Father Vlasiy from Borovsky Monastery

As mentioned earlier, Vlasiy had a difficult fate; he was forced to leave medical university because of his sincere love for God and the desire to develop in the field of religion. His own grandmother instilled this love in him. Despite all the difficulties, when he began to do what he loved, he felt a strong flow of vital energy, strength and vigor.

For several years he was forced to hide from law enforcement agencies because he was considered a persistent violator of the law. Slowly, life began to get better and a misfortune happened: robbers attacked the monastery, beat him so much that the doctors fought for his life for a very long time, but nevertheless their efforts were appreciated and gave a positive result.

After some time, he underwent several more operations and was forced to leave Russia. Without stopping for a minute to pray and believe in the Almighty, he was very far from home for 6 long years. His prayers were heard, and the illness subsided, he was completely healed and was able to return with peace of mind to the Pafnutiev-Borovsky Monastery , where he still serves.

His positivity, vital energy, strength and cheerfulness are enough for everyone, he never complains, but humbly accepts everything that the Almighty gives him. Once, looking at a complete stranger to him, he can say with accuracy what is bothering him and give him wise advice on how to live further.

Vlasiy himself also lived a difficult life. Father Blasius wandered and was once seriously wounded while defending his monastery from robbers.

Current state

The St. Paphnutie Monastery became an architectural and historical monument in 1919. However, after the Civil War, all Orthodox relics were taken away and the monks were expelled from the Lavra. By 1935, a mechanization school was opened on the territory of the monastery. After the Second World War, a gymnasium for production instructors was organized in its place, and 10 years later - various workshops, oil depots and educational buildings.

Gate of the Pafnutievo Borovsky Monastery

The question of restoring the Borovsky Monastery began to mature after the collapse of the main dome of the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin. At the same time, all production workshops were closed, and museums were organized in their place. Only in the 90s of the twentieth century did the Holy Paphnutia Lavra begin to accept monks and engage in its direct activities.

Gradually, the Borovsk monastery began to be restored - destroyed buildings were rebuilt, wall paintings were restored, and found relics were returned. Today, all work is almost completed, and the monastery is completely open to pilgrims. The Lavra is surrounded by a strong wall with named towers, and there is a small lake and river on the territory.

Temples and services

There are several temple buildings located on the territory of the men's monastery. The first to be built was the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary (1444), which was founded by the Monk Paphnutius himself. Initially, the building was wooden, but a few years later it was replaced with a stone cathedral. The famous icon painters of that time, Mitrofan and Dionysius, worked on painting the walls there. The interior decoration was so magnificent that it could easily compete with Moscow churches.

Throughout its existence, the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary has more than once become a victim of enemy raids. With each restoration, new elements appeared in it. Thus, by the middle of the 17th century, three aisles were built, the window openings were expanded, and their geometry was slightly changed. Later, the helmet-shaped domes were replaced with octal ones, and in 1837, instead of one aisle, a new stone refectory appeared.

The next oldest is the Church of Elijah the Prophet (1670). It was erected thanks to the princely couple Repnins, who donated a considerable amount for the construction of a temple with an infirmary.

Cathedral of St. Mitrofan of Tsaregrad was rebuilt almost a century later (1760). Although the height of the building is as much as 30.5 m, the building is one-story. It stands on a high pedestal and is decorated with a pentagonal apse. Initially, chapels were built on three sides, but today only a small fragment of the southern porch remains.

The belfry, standing separately from other temple buildings, was erected in 1511 along with the refectory. A century later, it was replaced by a luxurious bell tower, which still functions today.

After the completion of restoration work, the Holy Paphnutian Monastery is open to visitors every day.
