Temple of St. Photinia the Samaritan

- Orthodox church of the monastery of St. Photinia of Samaritan of the Jerusalem Orthodox Church. Located on the site of the Gospel conversation of the Savior with the Samaritan woman at the ancient well of Jacob in the city of Nablus (the Arabic version of the Greek name Neapolis) in Samaria. The biblical name of the city is Shechem.

On the site of the Gospel conversation of the Savior with the Samaritan woman at the ancient well of Jacob there is a Greek monastery built on the territory of a Byzantine temple of the 4th century, destroyed in the 6th century.

In 1914, the Jerusalem Patriarchate began the restoration of the temple with the financial support of Russia, interrupted by the First World War. Completion and consecration took place only in 2008.

Here in 1979, Archimandrite Philumen, who served in this temple and was known as a man of high spiritual life, was killed by religious Jewish fanatics.

Shortly before the murder, a group of people came to the monastery and demanded that the crosses and icons be removed from Jacob's Well under the pretext that the symbols of Christianity prevented them from praying in this sacred place for them. The abbot of the monastery refused to do this, recalling that Jacob’s Well was and remains an Orthodox shrine for many hundreds of years. In response, a threat was made that if he did not leave there, he should prepare for the worst. Shouting blasphemies, obscenities, and threats against Christians, the Jews left. On the day of remembrance of St. Apostle Matthew, the murderers broke into the monastery. They inflicted two cross-shaped wounds on Father Philumen's face with an ax, gouged out his eyes and cut off the fingers of his right hand piece by piece. They also desecrated the church itself: they cut the crucifix, desecrated sacred vessels and committed other blasphemous acts. Israeli civilian authorities announced that an investigation was underway, but no results were forthcoming.

The archimandrite was buried in Jerusalem, at the residence of the Jerusalem Patriarchate in Zion. A few years later, his tomb was opened, and the relics were found almost completely incorrupt. On August 29, 2008, before the consecration of the Temple of Photini the Samaritan Monastery over Jacob's Well, the relics from Jerusalem were transferred here to ancient Shechem (Nablus).

On September 11, 2009, Philumen the Holy Sepulcher was canonized as a martyr by the Patriarch of Jerusalem Theophilus III. On March 5, 2010, the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church decided: “to include the name of the Hieromartyr Philumenes (Hasapis) in the calendar of the Russian Orthodox Church with the establishment of the celebration of his memory on November 16/29, as established in the Jerusalem Church.”

These days, the Russian press again remembered Mother Photinia. This woman in the village of Bolshaya Yelnya, Nizhny Novgorod region, organized a religious community named after herself, Photinia the Light-Bringer, proclaimed Vladimir Putin the reincarnation of the Apostle Paul and prays with her novices at his portrait.

Back in 2005, when the public first became aware of Mother’s know-how, numerous TV spots and articles began to be written about her. And although, according to all the laws of the genre, her excessive popularity should have eventually faded away, the glory of Mother Photinia turned out to be inescapable. Now a variety of media outlets are talking about her again. “A sect of Putin’s followers has appeared in the Nizhny Novgorod region,” news agencies report.

Previously, Svetlana Robertovna Frolova headed the trading base in the management of the Gorky Railway and was engaged in barter. According to the testimonies of people who knew her, she was a completely sane person of a practical mind. In 1996, she was convicted of fraud, and after serving her sentence, she first took up healing and then organized her own community.

Photinia manages to include in her teaching a record number of reference signals - bright archetypal images and symbols dear to the heart. And this is her main talent. Its entire teaching is permeated with heresy,” the priests warn their flock. The priest of the church located in the neighboring village even organized religious processions against Photinia. But she only called Alexy II the incarnation of Pontius Pilate, and Nizhny Novgorod Bishop George the reincarnation of the high priest Caiaphas and continues to serve, imitating Orthodox rites. They say that the FSB has been interested in Photinia for a long time. But this does not interfere with mother’s success. The community has existed in Bolshaya Yelnya for ten years. In the stormy information flows, the topic of the so-called Church of Mother Fotigna surfaced. This is a religious community that numbers several dozen people. It is based in Nizhny Novgorod and is headed by a certain Svetlana Robertovna Frolova, who is, in fact, Mother Fotinha.

The first mentions of this religious organization were made somewhere in the early 2000s. In short, the “creed” of the Fotinevites is complete madness. The most striking aspect of this cult is the belief that Putin is the reincarnation of the Apostle Paul. He and seven other reincarnated apostles fight the seven Antichrists. Christ, in her humble opinion, is Svetlana Robertovna herself.

However, in order to understand the logic of the cult, it is necessary to turn to the history of the “mother” herself and her organization. At first glance, we are talking about crazy Putin fans craving Hollywood-style eschatology here and now. But, I’m afraid to disappoint, speaking about Mother Fotinya, we are dealing not so much with an abnormal person, but with a very enterprising one.

In the nineties, Svetlana Robertovna was the head of a large section of the railway. As part of its activities, it carried out “barter transactions” with foreign entrepreneurs. In fact, she exchanged state property for clothes. She sold these clothes.

In 1996, the court proved that the damage caused to the state by her “business” amounted to several tens of millions of rubles. The future “messiah” had to spend a year and a half in prison.

After leaving the not so distant places, the future mother headed to Moscow. From this moment her activity as a healer begins. Svetlana Fedorovna healed exclusively for money. Moreover, she even had a license “for entrepreneurial activities in healing and cosmic energy.” By the way, Svetlana Robertovna also does not have a medical education.

Over time, mother wanted more. Simple healing was not enough. This is how, in fact, her “church” appeared. By the nature of the doctrine, Fotinism is a typical New Age approaching Russian realities. Mother Fotinha has her own “temple”, made “for Orthodoxy”, where she herself serves. As part of the service, Svetlana Robertovna, for example, throws photographs of those who wish under the “altar iconostasis.” There, according to Svetlana Robertovna, grace descends on these photographs. The iconostasis itself is also interesting, since there are “icons” of Patriarch Alexy II and Vladimir Putin there.

In addition, in the “temple” there is a non-canonical icon of the Most Holy Theotokos “Resurrection of Rus'”. The temple sells “water charged by Mother Photina.” Actually, the paraphernalia of magic, witchcraft, extrasensory perception, jingoism and ardent love for the president mixed in this “church” into an unimaginable chaos. Svetlana Robertovna took several popular brands in the mass consciousness and packaged them into a kind of religious doctrine. And he makes money from this doctrine. Basically these are donations, sale of “charged water”, payment for “exorcism of demons” and other rituals that mother performs with enviable consistency.

It should be especially noted that from a legislative point of view everything looks clean. People donate large sums of money to Svetlana Robertovna without any coercion. Fotinha does not use hypnosis or drugs. Just the gift of persuasion and commercial spirit allow her to receive good dividends. They are so good that the self-proclaimed “messiah” has her own house, and she is going to open a second branch of her religious organization in Nizhny Novgorod.

Veneration of Putin appeared relatively late in this cult. And, of course, only because the image of the president has become very popular among broad sections of the population. Just like “Resurrecting Rus'” [[the non-canonical icon of the Mother of God] is a symbol of patriotism, which in reality turns out to be leavened patriotism and bordering on fascism. Well, of course it’s stylized to resemble Orthodoxy, since people don’t expect trickery from this side. At the same time, there is a fascinating, fabulous eschatology, the battle of good and evil, reincarnated apostles against antichrists. By the way, the Nizhny Novgorod bishop and Patriarch also play an important role in the mythology of Svetlana Robertovna. Alexy II is the reincarnation of Pontius Pilate, who was reborn to atone for his guilt and now helps Putin in everything, and the Nizhny Novgorod bishop is the incarnation of Caiaphas. Naturally, it was the Bishop of Nizhny Novgorod who suffered the most, since the diocese openly speaks about the sectarian and occult nature of this religious organization. Quite a long time ago.

As for the people who believe in such nonsense, in principle, although it is sad, it is natural. The more idiotic the doctrine, the more likely people are to believe it. It is also worth taking into account the very low level of religious literacy of people, “below the plinth.” By the way, current legislation also does not allow us to do anything with the Fotinevites. Svetlana Robertovna “cuts hair on her flock” under the guise of “Putin icons” on completely legal grounds. This, by the way, is about the costs of establishing a secular state; it is possible to significantly reduce the number of organizations like the “Church of Mother Fotigna” or the Penza “True Orthodox” quite simply and painlessly. Or at least prevent new cults of this kind from appearing. The Russian Association of Centers for the Study of Religions and Sects has repeatedly proposed the creation of religious councils from representatives of traditional faiths. These councils could have the final say in granting registration to a particular religious association. For now, we are forced only to note the emergence and development of a variety of cults and sects.

In sectarian terms, Nizhny Novgorod is generally an amazing place. In addition to the “Church of Mother Fotigna,” there is also such a cult as “cosmic communists,” the guru of this sect considers himself the incarnation of the Virgin Mary. Well, if you take a closer look at Russian realities, it becomes quite sad. There is sectarian chaos going on in the country, and Mother Fotinha with her ideas of apostolic-presidential reincarnation is not yet the worst version of religious madness.

The young woman dreamed of finding a job in a foreign company, but, having found herself in obedience in transition with a carbon woman, she realized that this was her calling, and her son’s illness that happened in 2014 became the final answer to the question about the path of life... “I studied at the Radio Engineering Institute as a systems engineer,” says Mother Fotinia. — I got married in my last year. When I graduated from the university, it was the beginning of the 1990s, the Soviet Union had just collapsed, the distribution was canceled and they didn’t want to hire me anywhere. We, the youth, traveled on shuttles, bought goods, resold them, and handed them over to stalls. Survived, in a word. This was hard.

Then I worked as a programmer in the executive committee of the Sovetsky district, dreaming of finding a job in a foreign company as a second accountant for $300. I sent my resume to all newspapers.

In 2000, my family broke up. I was left alone with my six-year-old son. It was a huge stress, I lost my footing. The Lord helped. He gave believers, I confessed and received communion... In the spring the family fell apart, and in the fall I came to confession to Father Andrei Lemeshonok. After that confession, everything turned upside down for me. I began going to services at the St. Elisabeth Monastery, my son went to Sunday school at the monastery. And in January or February, the priest called me to the sisterhood. They determined obedience to stand with carbon in the passage. A young woman and a carbon woman... How is this? I never went out without lipstick on my lips.

Then she told the priest that I was afraid, and he replied: “We are all afraid.” Well, that’s all... Yes, I remembered the experience of the 90s, when we went to the markets: it was also unpleasant, but in some way they were able to overcome themselves.

When I went to transition to obedience for the first time, I imagined that like some kind of miracle I would be standing with a box. There, on the spot, the sister was already there, we said a prayer, and she left, and for the first time I was left alone in the passage along which everyone walks.

It felt like it was a chapel. You are surrounded by a glass wall, and you watch what is happening behind it like a movie. Someone is in a hurry to run errands, someone turns around and looks at you, someone comes up. This is simply aerobatics... Some kind of miracle - a completely different world, ordinary people walk there, they are very interesting. People talked about their lives and sent notes asking to pray for loved ones. And you, when no one is there, pray and sing in a low voice.

I stood with the carbon for a month, and they called me from a German company - they needed an assistant accountant, and just for the salary of my dreams. They told me that I was an ideal candidate, they persuaded me, and asked me to write down my phone number. I wrote it down, but decided not to call them back.

Then there was amazing trust in God, and I saw His care for me. Somehow everything worked out. Father often says that people at that time had boldness. They served God and did not think about money, they simply served Him and were grateful for what God gives.

I saw that this money that they give in the monastery is gold. A person doesn't need much. It's simple. I saw that the Lord gives what is needed. And I also felt that I was not such a generous person. Some people will give their last, share everything, but for me it’s a little different, it’s more difficult for me to give. And God gave exactly as much as I could bear and what I could share. It’s easy to give three or five kopecks, but if you have a million dollars, it’s harder to give half.

Obedience as a hospital

Six months have passed since I began to carry out this obedience - I walk around the city in a long skirt without makeup; I didn’t want anything else, it was somehow natural. I wanted to pray more, be with God, think about something real, and devote more time to my son. A new unknown life began for me. One close person told me that before I came to God and met my priest, I was an ordinary modern young woman, and then I became a completely different person, as if I had been reborn.

I myself suddenly realized that it was as if someone had thrown me over the wall. There was one life - it became another. For example, young people are sitting in a cafe, and I once sat there next to them, but now it’s uninteresting and alien to me. This is no longer my world. The circle of friends changed... It became surprising, how could this happen? How did you get over this huge wall? He didn’t jump over it himself - the Lord carried it...

Surprisingly, even in obedience to standing with the carbon, I finally found what was truly mine, even in terms of self-realization. The moment itself was difficult due to events in the family. You carry this burden, but you come to obedience, and it’s like a hospital. You change your clothes, put on a carbon coat - and you already live with different people. They come up to you, tell you their pain, you console them, talk with them, rejoice, cry, pray. The golden moments of standing with the carbon bottle brought me out of despair. Resuscitation…

Martha and Mary

People do not need advice, they are given in thousands, but to simply be listened to, for someone to share your pain. And also the opportunity to pray... Father Andrei blessed the sisters to talk less and pray more. If there is some kind of word, then ask God: “Lord, what should I tell a person?” You need to be careful.

When you empathize with a person, accept him, and pray with him, and cry, then you receive the gift of God - joy!

Everything has collapsed for me! Everything that the family had built, the foundation, collapsed, and there was no point. This is a serious test... Entering the temple and meeting God, I again found the meaning of life and joy. This experience helped me to have a personal say. And people are always interested in what concerns you, your experiences.

Yes, it’s amazing how the heart is filled not with heaviness, but with joy. You are a guide, but it is not you who loves, the Lord loves, but with the blessing of the Church, God works through you. My heart is filled with joy for this service. And you leave the obedience alive, you want to live! There is no longing and sadness, on the contrary - fulfillment. It's some kind of secret.

For two years I stood with carbon. I stood on Komarovka, on Nemiga, at the Institute of Culture. And it was also thirty degrees below zero. It was amazing grace. And then for twelve years I carried out obedience in the church shop. In some ways, obedience is similar: you also stand, accept notes, communicate with people, pray - but the moment of selling church utensils and products from our workshops is added. It's interesting, it results in more activity.

Having come to Rome and fearlessly confessed Christ, you were imprisoned, and having endured much torment, you were thrown into a well, and you betrayed your soul to the Lord.

Hear us, Saint Photino, who shone with spiritual beauty and constantly and incessantly taught people faith in Christ, in prison and in cities.
