Odessa Diocese
is a diocese of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church with its center in the city of Odessa; unites parishes and monasteries on the territory of Belgorod-Dnestrovsky, Belyaevsky, Ovidiopolsky, Artsyzsky, Tatarbunarsky, Saratsky, Tarutinsky, Kiliysky, Limansky, Izmailsky, Bolgradsky, Reniy districts of the Odessa region of Ukraine and the city of Odessa. Established in 1946[1].

History[ | ]

After the annexation of Novorossiya to Russia under the Treaty of Yassy, the territory of the current Odessa diocese was an integral part of the following Russian dioceses[2][3]:

  • from 1789 to 1797 - Ekaterinoslavskaya.
  • from 1797 to 1803 - Novorossiysk and Dnieper (as a result of the renaming of the Ekaterinoslav diocese in 1797).
  • from 1803 to 1837 - Ekaterinoslav, Kherson and Tauride diocese.
  • from 1837 to 1859 - Kherson and Tauride, which was separated from Ekaterinoslav; Since 1837, the seat of the ruling diocesan bishop has been Odessa.
  • from 1859 to 1926 - Kherson and Odessa. Due to the increased importance of Odessa, which became the de facto center of southern Russia, and the establishment of an independent Tauride and Simferopol diocese in 1859, the Kherson and Tauride diocese was renamed Kherson and Odessa. In 1880, the Elisavetgrad Vicariate was established with the seat of the bishop in Odessa.
  • Kherson and Nikolaev (from 1928 to 1944).
  • Odessa and Kirovograd (from 1946 to 1947).
  • Kherson and Odessa (from 1947 to 1991).
  • Independent Odessa and Izmail diocese from 1991 to the present [1].

In 1956, a courtyard of the Alexandria Church was opened at the Trinity (Greek) Church of Odessa, which was moved to Moscow in April 1999.

By the decision of the Holy Synod of the UOC dated December 20, 2012, the Baltic and Ananyevsk diocese was separated from the diocese[4].

Russian Orthodox Church

At the end of the 18th century. The territory of the future Odessa region became part of the Russian Empire. In church terms, these lands were subordinated to Metropolitan Gabriel of Ekaterinoslav (Banulescu-Bodoni).

At the founding of Odessa in 1794, Metropolitan Gabriel performed a prayer service, laying the first stones in the foundation of the new city and Odessa churches. With the formation of the Kishinev See, Odessa began to be governed by the archpastors of Kishinev. This was the case until 1837, when the diocese of Kherson and Tauride was formed from part of the Chisinau diocese with the seat of the ruling bishop in Odessa.

In 1859, in connection with the separation of the Tauride diocese into an independent Kherson-Tauria archdiocese, it was renamed Kherson and Odessa. In 1971, the diocese began to be called Odessa-Kherson, and since 1991, after Kherson was separated into an independent diocese, Odessa and Izmail.

By the decision of the Holy Synod of the UOC dated December 20, 2012 (journal No. 103), the Baltic diocese was separated from the diocese.

As part of the Odessa diocese, the Synod left the city of Odessa, Belgorod-Dnestrovsky, Belyaevsky, Ovidiopolsky, Artsyzsky, Tatarbunarsky, Saratsky, Tarutinsky, Kiliysky, Kominternovsky, Izmailsky, Bolgradsky and Reniysky districts of the Odessa region of Ukraine.

The Synod reserved the title of “Odessa and Izmail” for the ruling bishop.

The Odessa diocese asks to protect the clergy and believers

Odessa, May 7, 2014

An Open Appeal from the Odessa Diocese of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church has been published on the official website of the diocese.

“The attention of the whole world is focused on the tragic events that are taking place in Ukraine. Mass unrest, the threat of military action, a split in the community based on various political considerations - against this social background, a dramatic confrontation of a completely different order is developing, a spiritual confrontation,” it says.

“There are open provocations and threats against the Orthodox Church, its clergy and believers. The media disseminate false information regarding the Orthodox Church, thus creating enmity and hatred among the population towards the Orthodox Church.

A wave of attacks on priests of the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church and attempts to seize Orthodox churches swept across Ukraine. The Kiev Pechersk and Pochaev Lavras were under siege. In Sumy, they threatened to burn alive (with Molotov cocktails) Archbishop Evlogiy, along with the cathedral and the diocesan administration of the ruling bishop of the UOC. Some priests of the canonical Church were threatened with physical harm, including the administrator of the Odessa diocese.

We emphasize that the Ukrainian Orthodox Church prays for peace and harmony, softening evil hearts, thereby demonstrating an example of the spiritual unity of all believers, regardless of their nationality and political views.”

“Taking into account the above, in order to protect the rights and legitimate interests of churches, monasteries and the faithful of the Odessa Diocese,” the Odessa Diocese appeals to representatives of the UN and OSCE, as well as to the acting. President of Ukraine A.I. Turchinov and others:

"WE ASK YOU:

Take measures regarding the non-interference of political forces and their power structures in the activities of the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

Take measures to protect the property of the Odessa Diocese of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

Take measures to protect the life and health of priests and believers of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

We urge you to protect the clergy and believers of the Odessa diocese of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church from people who deliberately disseminate unreliable, false, provocative information that can lead to unpredictable consequences that do not contribute to peace, stability, and tranquility in our Ukrainian society. Once again we assure you that all the clergy and believers of the multinational Odessa region have always been and remain with the people of the independent state.”

Orthodox Odessa. With the blessing of Metropolitan Agathangel...

“With the blessing of Metropolitan Agafangel” - these words begin every Orthodox work in Odessa and the region. Thus, on February 6, at the Coordination Center of the Odessa Diocese for the provision of humanitarian aid at St. Alexei Church, another monthly charity event took place, during which more than 250 families in need received food packages and material assistance totaling more than 40,000 UAH (about $1.5 thousand)

This is the first time in the coming year that aid has been provided to those in dire need. The social department under the Odessa diocese of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church was created in 2014 after the tragic events of May 2. The main task today has become material assistance and support for low-income families, but at first assistance was provided directly in hospitals to victims at the hands of brutal nationalists. With the outbreak of the civil war in Donbass, a stream of refugees poured into Odessa. Citizens in this category are still receiving assistance to this day. However, with the worsening economic crisis, there are more and more people in need of help every day: pensions and benefits, and salaries are not enough for everyone. More and more pensioners, disabled people, large families, and simply lonely and disadvantaged people are turning to the Coordination Center for help. When there is no hope for the state, citizens turn to the help of the Church.

For almost five years, material assistance in the amount of 20 million 487 thousand hryvnia was provided from diocesan funds, and 667 tons of food were distributed in the form of humanitarian aid. Decisions to provide assistance to each person are made personally by Metropolitan Agathangel. He also applies for funds for this assistance. No, not to the rich, whose prosperity grows on the blood and grief of their fellow citizens, but to ordinary people, parishioners of Odessa churches.

“I appeal to all of you, people with a kind heart, who always came to the rescue in difficult times, to take part in the noble cause of helping your neighbors: feeding hungry elderly people, children, widows and orphans, the disabled and the poor. Those in need of help need food (cereals, pasta, canned food, dry mixtures, homemade twists, tea, sugar, potatoes, onions, vegetables, baby food), as well as medicines, hygiene products, other essential items and financial resources. For the convenience of Odessa residents, at every church in our diocese there is a collection point for food and funds, where you can bring everything collected at any time,” these are the words of one of such appeals.

Initiative groups of parishioners of Orthodox churches go to the needy, prisoners, old people and orphans. Thus, on February 7, teachers and students of the “Man of God” Sunday school at St. Alexei Church visited women prisoners of the Black Sea Correctional Colony No. 74.

A performance for prisoners will begin soon...

As a gift, the children showed a performance based on Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale "The Seat". And this is not the only, nor the first visit to prisoners by this community - the tradition has existed since 2012. The social department of the Odessa diocese provides ongoing assistance to prisoners serving sentences in correctional institutions in Ukraine. Based on requests that come in letters from the prisoners themselves, food and personal hygiene products are purchased and delivered to colonies and detention centers in Odessa, Kharkov, Chernihiv, Khmelnitsky, Vinnytsia, Zhytomyr and Kherson regions.

At the end of January, clergy of the Odessa diocese once again visited a boarding school for children with mental development problems in the village of Mikhailovka, Saratsk district, Odessa region. Help was provided both spiritual and material. Young pupils of the Solnyshko Children's Home are also among the permanent caretakers. The priests and students of the seminary organize children's parties for them with games and gifts.

Students of the Odessa Theological Seminary constantly visit the wards of the house of mercy of the Holy Archangel Michael Convent. Lonely old people who find themselves in an almshouse at the end of their lives enjoy the company itself, although the gifts are far from superfluous.

“This is not just our natural reaction to the pain, tears and need of our people. This is evidence of the true patriotism and ardent love for their Motherland - Ukraine, of the faithful children of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, which is expressed not in one-time PR campaigns and in the search for enemies, but in everyday painstaking creative work for the benefit of our country and its citizens,” they note in press service of the Odessa diocese.

With the blessing of Metropolitan Agafangel at the expense of the Odessa diocese on the territory of the Holy Protection Skete of the Holy Dormition Patriarchal Monastery in the village. Marinovka, Belyaevsky district, Odessa region, on the shore of the Khadzhibeevsky estuary, the first Orthodox hospice in Ukraine “Pokrov” is being built, which will provide medical and spiritual support to people suffering from cancer.

Everyone knows the temple-building activities of Bishop Agafangel. Let's recall some numbers. On June 20, 1992, he was appointed Metropolitan of Odessa and Izmail. At this time, there were only seven parishes in the city, and 80 in the region. Today there are 77 parishes in Odessa, and 500 in the Odessa region. Almost 900 churches and 11 monasteries appeared with the blessing of Metropolitan Agafangel . Everyone also knows that the Bishop personally participates in all stages of the construction and decoration of churches.

It is impossible to pass over in silence the revival of the Transfiguration Cathedral from oblivion. And on the territory of the Holy Dormition Patriarchal Monastery, a spacious and magnificent cathedral church of the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos “Life-Giving Source” with a lower church of St. Kuksha of Odessa was built.

Temple of the Icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary “Life-Giving Spring”

And in the monastery there was built a majestic bell tower with a unique gate temple of the holy noble princes and passion-bearers Boris and Gleb. The Church of the Blessed Matrona of Moscow is being built at the bishop’s personal expense. Churches are being built in various districts of Odessa and in the suburbs: in the village of Fontanka - St. Alexander of Kushtsky, on Cheryomushki - the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos “Look at Humility”, at the memorial First Christian Cemetery - All Saints...

It is necessary to say something about educational activities. With the blessing of Metropolitan Agafangel, a number of missionary programs are broadcast on local television channels, and a diocesan magazine and newspaper are published. And for theology lovers – the famous publication of the Odessa Seminary “Andreevsky Messenger”. Innocent educational readings are held annually in memory of the famous theologian St. Innocent of Odessa. The city constantly runs catechist courses for adults with a three-year training program and the issuance of special diplomas.

With Mammal icon

And Metropolitan Agafangel still serves a lot - he leads services on Sundays and holidays, as well as traditional and beloved akathists by the Orthodox: on Tuesday before the miraculous icon of the Most Holy Theotokos Mammal in the Holy Dormition Monastery, and on Fridays in the Holy Dormition Cathedral in front of the shrine of the Novorossiysk region with the miraculous Kasperovsky icon of the Queen of Heaven. And what are the thousands of citywide religious processions worth, also performed with the blessing and under the direct leadership of Metropolitan Agathangel annually on July 12 - the day of the feast of this image!

At the Akathist in front of the Kasperov Icon

A manifestation of common sense and fidelity in the current troubled, military in many senses, time are the meetings of Orthodox believers of the Odessa diocese. People unite to express their support for the canonical Church, its primate, His Beatitude Metropolitan Onuphry, and their bishop Agafangel. All parishes of the Bolgrad and Reni deanery districts of the Odessa diocese of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate refused to transfer to the so-called. The OCU, as well as the faithful of the Tatarbunar, Ovidiopol, Belgorod-Dnestrovsky and Belyaevsky districts.

Orthodox Christians of the Odessa Diocese support the UOC-MP

In the Saratsk region, local authorities are attempting to remove the temple in the village of Mikhailovka from the canonical Church. And in the town of Sarata, the city mayor named Negodyaev managed to lead the rector of the local church into schism; Archpriest Vladislav Shiman was banned from the priesthood and excommunicated from communion. At the same time, parishioners of churches in the Saratsk region remain faithful to the canonical Church. The Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius at the Military Academy of Odessa was practically captured. Parishioners were no longer allowed into it on August 14, 2021, and from the beginning of this year, the rector, Archpriest Sergius Dmitriev, a reserve lieutenant colonel and participant in combat operations in Afghanistan, was also denied entry.

However, the time of persecution is the time of purification of the Church. Through the works of Metropolitan Agafangel, a whole host of Odessa saints were canonized. With God's help and their prayers we will win!

Church media[ | ]

  • Magazine "Odessa Diocesan Gazette";
  • Newspapers: “Justice”, “Orthodox Herald of Yuzhny” (Yuzhny), “Orthodox Bessarabia” (Belgorod-Dnestrovsky), “Orthodox Izmail”, “Preobrazhenie” (Bolgrad);
  • The magazine "Andreevsky Messenger", published by the Odessa Theological Seminary;
  • Official website of the Odessa diocese - https://eparhiya.od.ua/

The press service of the Odessa diocese was created with the blessing of Agafangel, Metropolitan of Odessa and Izmail in 2000.

Press[ | ]

In 2006, with the blessing of Metropolitan Agafangel, a trial publication of the newspaper “Odessa Diocesan Gazette” began, the project of which was developed by St. Innocent (Borisov). Since 2007, the newspaper has become monthly, and since 2009 it has been published in full color. The newspaper informs readers about the activities of the diocesan and vicar bishops and publishes relevant materials. So, in 2011, with the blessing of the Bishop, the newspaper published a series of articles about the family.

The official printed organ of the Odessa Theological Seminary is the pastoral and theological magazine “Andreevsky Messenger”, which, with the blessing of Metropolitan Agafangel, has been published quarterly since 2000. During this time, the magazine “Andreevsky Messenger” has become a source of knowledge for pastors, teachers and students of theological schools, covering the life of the Church, theological schools, touching on important, pressing problems of pastoral life, modern church reality and ways to resolve them.

Publishing activity[ | ]

Also one of the types of printing activities is the annual publication of spiritual literature. Thus, in 2010-2011, with the blessing of the Metropolitan, the press service of the diocese together with an associate professor at the National Pedagogical University. Ushinsky A.M. Yatsi published an Orthodox family calendar for 2011 and 2012. The calendar contains about 400 pages on which you can find spiritual teachings and advice for every day, as well as meaningful lives of the saints of our region. In 2009 (2011), a “Guide to Temples and Shrines of the Odessa Diocese” was jointly published, which contains a brief description of the history of the temple, locally revered shrines, and its exact address.

Internet[ | ]

Since 2006, with the blessing of Metropolitan Agafangel, the Internet project of the Odessa diocese “Orthodox Odessa” (https://www.pravoslav.odessa.net/) was launched, which worked for a year in experimental mode. In 2008, the site was fundamentally updated, and since that time it has been visited by a large number of users, which indicates its popularity. According to the Graphlog statistics calculation system, the Internet resource is visited daily by 350 to 800 users.

Television[ | ]

On May 2, 2010, with the blessing of His Eminence Agafangel, the first issue of the joint project of the press service of the Odessa diocese and the Glas shopping and entertainment company “Television Diocesan Review” (TEO) was released. This television program is a weekly spiritual and educational media project that reveals the meaning and significance of the Orthodox faith, talks about Christian traditions, holidays and shrines of Orthodoxy. The program promptly introduces the television audience to diocesan news, being a sought-after source of reliable information not only about the Odessa diocese, but also about Orthodoxy in general. This is evidenced by numerous calls and positive feedback from TV viewers to the TEO editorial office.

The program is released once a week on Sunday with five repeats throughout the week. The program is also broadcast on the Soyuz satellite TV channel, on the air of the Odessa Regional Television and Radio Company and on the Internet. The program is hosted by clergy of the Odessa diocese and Orthodox journalists.

A lot of interesting things for viewers is contained in the television supplement to TEO - “Liturgical Encyclopedia”. This television application was created on the initiative of students of the Odessa Theological Seminary, who are the authors and presenters of this project. “The Liturgical Encyclopedia” talks about the life of the church, its structure, reveals to the television audience all the subtleties of liturgical life, and helps to become more familiar with the structure of the Orthodox church. This project is new and unique in the Orthodox media system because students of the theological school are given the opportunity to express themselves on television.

The principle of working on the application is as follows: a group of students independently determines the topic of the program, writes a script, works on the material, and then begins filming the program, after which they prepare the story for broadcast. Thus, UDS students learn from their own experience how to work with the media, which will help them in their future pastoral activities to conduct a constructive dialogue between the church and society through the media.

Conducting live broadcasts with the participation of clergy of the diocese is the main and main task of our press service, since only an open dialogue between the church and society helps a person discover for himself all the meanings and traditions of Orthodoxy. The GLAS television and radio company broadcasts the “Open Studio” programs, where for two hours journalists communicate with clergy on topical issues relating to church life. A distinctive feature of these broadcasts is feedback, which allows everyone to call the studio and ask certain questions.

Another diocesan television project is the author’s program “Transfiguration” with Archpriest Dimitry Predein” on the TV channels “KRT” and “Soyuz”, which is hosted by UDS teachers: the author, Doctor of Theology KDA, Archpriest Dimitri Predein and presenter, Candidate of Theology KDA, Archpriest Andrey Gavrilenko . In their program, the author and presenter examine deep dogmatic, hagiographical, philosophical and social issues.

Radio[ | ]

Since 1997, the weekly spiritual and educational program “The Light of Orthodoxy” has been broadcast on the waves of Odessa regional radio, which is the first diocesan media project. For 20 minutes of airtime every Sunday, the clergy of the diocese consider religious and moral issues, comment on current events in church life, and answer questions from radio listeners. Currently, the host of the program is the vice-rector of the Odessa Theological Seminary, Archpriest Andrei Nikolaidi, and the editor is Padorina Irina Leonidovna.

The diocesan press service has established friendly relations with representatives of regional media, as evidenced by the constant participation of diocesan clergy in programs of local television channels. I would like to note the fruitful cooperation of the press service with the ATV, Reporter and a number of other TV channels in Odessa.

For many years, the newspaper of the Odessa City Council “Odessa Bulletin” has been publishing materials on spiritual topics in its Saturday editions.

Relations between the press service and the Odessa branch of the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine are actively developing, which allows our structure to take full part in information life, both at the regional and national levels. As a result of this joint cooperation, a number of press service employees were admitted to the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine.

In the cities of Izmail, Belgorod-Dnestrovsky, and Yuzhny, monthly parish Orthodox newspapers are published with our information support.

Almost all major monasteries and churches of the diocese have their own websites that cover their daily activities.
