Who can be godparents for boys and girls according to church rules, responsibilities and gifts

Baptism is one of the most important sacraments in a person’s life. Sometimes a person comes to him already in adulthood, but much more often the decision to perform the ritual is made by the parents of a newborn, turning to the temple almost immediately after his birth. In this case, all responsibility for preparing for the celebration and choosing godparents falls on their shoulders, and then it won’t hurt to know the rules and signs accompanying this special day. Moreover, it is worth considering that there are differences between boys and girls.

When should a baby be baptized?

The Orthodox Church does not set the age of baptism for children. In each family, this issue is resolved independently, based on the characteristics of the way of life, the health of the child, and so on.

For centuries, a tradition has been established to baptize infants no earlier than 40 days from their birth. There is an explanation for this. His parents brought Jesus Christ to the Temple for dedication to God on the fortieth day, according to the custom of the ancient Jews.

During the same period, a woman after childbirth goes through a period of cleansing. After reading a special prayer, she can visit the temple and fully participate in the life of the Church and its Sacraments, including being present at the baptism of her child.

If the baby is weak and sick, you can wait until he grows up and gets stronger. The church prays for “mother and child,” so God’s help will not leave both of them, but the child’s full participation in church life will be possible only after baptism.

If the life of a newborn is in danger of death, then it is better to baptize him as early as possible in order to be able to pray for health or remember him during the Liturgy. Regular communion, which is possible only for a Christian, will strengthen the child’s physical and spiritual strength.

When the family decides to baptize their child, you still shouldn’t put off the most important event in his life for too long. There is another argument in favor of this decision: a baby at the age of 1-2 months is not yet attached to his mother and family, he is not frightened by strangers and extraneous sounds. Throughout the entire Sacrament, the godparents will hold the baby in their arms; an older child may resist this.

Features of christenings for boys and girls

The sacrament of Baptism can be performed on a person who consciously believes in Christian truths. An adult himself testifies to his readiness to unite with Christ and receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit. It is impossible to expect conscious faith from infants. During the Sacrament of Baptism, they must take a vow of fidelity to God and renounce the forces of evil and sin.

Is it possible to baptize them? “Yes, it’s possible,” answers the Orthodox Church. Receivers from the font or godparents are given to the baby at baptism in order to be responsible for him before the Lord not only during the sacrament itself, but also in subsequent earthly and eternal life. Infants are baptized according to their faith and the faith of the parents.

Godparents have a special role in the spiritual education of a child. They make a promise to God to lead the godson through life in a Christian way, to raise him in the spirit of the Orthodox faith. The life of the recipients themselves should be a worthy example of piety and love for God and for others. According to established tradition, a godfather and a godmother are chosen for the child, by analogy with the parents.

However, according to church canons, one thing is enough:

  • men - for a boy;
  • women - for girls.

There may even be gender mismatch. However, each such case is considered individually, and the decision is made by the priest. The main thing is that future godparents are full members of the Orthodox Church, know the basics of the Orthodox faith and are ready to raise the child spiritually.

If you baptized a child together, you cannot marry

Is it possible for an unmarried girl to baptize a child? The girl is baptized by the godmother, the boy by the godfather. But at the same time, for a girl, both the father and the mother are often invited. Here an important condition arises, which can become an obstacle to the choice of a particular person for the role of godmother or godfather. It seems very sweet when a future couple seals their feelings by baptizing their baby together. This is what people who are ignorant of church canons often do. The fact is that the godparents, when performing the Sacrament, enter into a spiritual relationship. This is the obstacle. If the couple subsequently wishes to get married, they will be refused. It is forbidden to perform the Sacrament of Wedding on people who are in such a relationship, that is, who are the spiritual parents of the same baby.

Nowadays, such stories also happen: mom and dad get divorced, then dad wants to marry his godfather. Such marriages are also not blessed. Answer to the question: “Can unmarried girls have girls baptized?” next: it is possible if the girl is going to become a nun, has simply taken a vow of celibacy, and also if the godfather does not take part in the baptism or is not her likely groom.

Who cannot be among the godparents according to church rules?

For newborn boys and girls, before choosing adopters, it is necessary to know who can and cannot become them.

The priest will refuse to perform the Sacrament of Baptism if the following are chosen as recipients:

  • representatives of other religions, pagans, atheists;
  • the parents themselves;
  • monastics;
  • mentally ill and immoral people;

  • drunk;
  • young children.

Can godparents be husband and wife or become one in the future? There are no canons prohibiting this in Orthodoxy. In 2021, the Council of Bishops updated the permission for marriages of adoptees with the blessing of the diocesan bishop. Such permission existed before, but a tradition has developed to prohibit such marriages.

Beliefs

But still, there are many terrible legends among the people that if the godmother did not have time to get married before the ceremony, she will give her family happiness to the child, and she herself will not become a happy wife. Allegedly, this is why it is necessary to invite a married woman who already has a wonderful life and has her own family. One way or another, all these are just superstitions, and it’s up to the parents to choose who will be the godmother; the main thing is to approach the issue seriously. It is important that the person intended for the role is kind, believes in the Lord, and treats the new role with all the responsibility entrusted to him. The godmother is the second mother of the child, who throughout his future life will help and support him in all matters and endeavors.

Who can be a godparent for a boy or girl?

The main criterion when choosing recipients is their belonging to Orthodoxy, as well as their church membership - the desire to live in accordance with Christian truths, fight sin, and correct themselves.

The mission of the adoptive parents is to testify before God for their ward about faith, renunciation of Satan, a promise to build their lives according to the commandments of God, and to help their godson or goddaughter fulfill all these promises in the future life.

Spiritual work continues throughout the life of godparents and their godchildren. Prayer for godchildren must be supported by real deeds: take the child to communion, read spiritual literature with him, learn a prayer, explain the foundations of the Orthodox faith.

The Church allows one of the godparents to be of a different Christian faith - Catholic or Protestant, if there is no possibility of finding an Orthodox Christian in the family environment.

A clergyman can become a godparent, but as a rule, they have many responsibilities and will have little free time for full communication with the godson.

Age of majority is an optional but desirable condition. The responsibility that godparents take on in the face of God involves understanding the importance of the role of the godparent and understanding what spiritual mentoring is.

Can godparents be relatives of the child?

The child's relatives, including the closest ones, can be chosen to play the role of recipient. Except for the parents.

Before choosing one of your relatives as your child's adoptive parent, you need to think about this: a few years will pass and the child will grow up. Teenagers are not ready to discuss their problems with their closest relatives; this is the psychology of this age.

They are looking for an authoritative adult outside the family. A godfather could become such a person, help and guide the teenager in the right direction along the Christian path of development. Of course, provided that in all previous years he took an active part in raising his godson, and they developed a trusting relationship.

From this point of view, choosing close relatives for the role of adoptive parents is not always the best solution.

Rules and tips for choosing godparents

It is right to choose church-going Orthodox Christians who will raise the child in faith and love for God, respect for people.

You need to answer the following questions:

  • Who can you entrust the body and soul of a child to?
  • Who will help raise him in faith?
  • Who can you become spiritually related to?

Godparents are mentors in the Orthodox faith, and not rare guests with gifts at birthdays. True Christian love is the most valuable gift to godchildren from their godparents, and the most important role is to be an example in the organization of Christian life.

How to choose godparents for a child if the parents are non-believers?

Unbelieving parents can baptize their children. Strictly speaking, the presence of parents is not necessary. In some churches, the priest does not allow parents to attend the Sacrament at all.

Atheists can be godparents for boys and girls

In Soviet times, grandmothers brought their children to be baptized without the participation of atheist parents.

They preserved and remembered the Orthodox faith and hoped for the mercy of God. Having grown up, these children came to God consciously.

Godparents, who can be spiritual educators for boys and girls, take full responsibility for raising a child in the truths of the Gospel.

Their role increases many times over: only they can graft a branch onto the Tree of Life, cultivate the seeds of the Orthodox faith in the soul of the godson.

You can baptize a child even if the parents are of a different faith.

In such situations, first of all, you need to think about the benefits for the child: the parents must have consent to baptism in order to avoid conflicts.

Is it possible to baptize a child without godparents?

Sometimes life situations arise when a child needs to be baptized immediately, for example, if he is in danger of death. A priest can perform the Sacrament of baptism without recipients, so that he can help the child in the struggle for life with the help of the Holy Gifts and the common prayer of the entire Orthodox Church.

In the future, when the baby gets better, you can find people who will become godparents for the child and help the parents spiritually raise the boy or girl. Churched parents can do this on their own.

In emergency situations, lay people can baptize a baby by saying the Baptismal Prayer. At the first opportunity, the priest will complete what he started, since the process of Baptism consists of several stages and ends with the Sacrament of Confirmation.

Nuances

What is conscience, faith, mercy, patience, selfless love, how to understand the boundaries between evil and good: at every meeting, spiritual parents should tell the godson about all this. This is the most important gift!

Sometimes we wear a bra incorrectly: ways that are harmful to health

Seven daily habits of happy people

The star of the series “Sultan of My Heart” spoke about the choice of his future wife

It is difficult to accept and understand this postulate. It’s customary for us to bring toys, money to the godson’s house, and spend time with the baby idly. This is good, of course. But people often forget that godparents are, first of all, spiritual guides.

A child can only be baptized once. You cannot re-baptize your baby, no matter what happens!

Responsibilities of godparents

Godparents have serious responsibilities towards their godchildren in raising them in the traditions of the Orthodox Church:

  • Prayer: pray for the child, and as he grows, teach him to pray, turn to God for help, and trust in Him.

  • Doctrinal: teach the basics of Orthodoxy, read the Gospel and spiritual literature with him.
  • Moral: become an example of life in Christ, be a source of love, mercy, kindness.

Godparents renounce sin for the child and undertake obligations for the spiritual education of the godson before God. The Church teaches that at the last judgment He will ask for the upbringing of godchildren in the same way as for the upbringing of his own children.

Now it becomes clear why choosing godparents is a responsible and difficult decision. The connection with them can become stronger than with blood relatives, since it is sanctified by the Lord and based on Christian love.

How can godparents prepare for the Great Sacrament?

For a churchgoer there is nothing special in preparation. Prayer, fasting, confession, communion, reading the Gospel - the ordinary life of a Christian. Each parish may have its own traditions, so it is worth checking with the church where the baptism will take place whether there are any special requirements for recipients.

In many parishes, so-called public meetings are held for those future godparents who are still little familiar with the life of the Church. The priest explains in detail the main provisions of the Orthodox faith, talks about the Sacrament of Baptism, as well as those parish traditions that relate to baptism.

Godparents, who can serve as receivers from the font for boys and girls, so as not to approach holy responsibilities formally, must prepare themselves to participate in the upcoming Sacrament:

  • read at least one Gospel;
  • carefully study the Creed - it is read out loud during baptism;
  • if possible, learn “Our Father” - one of the main Christian prayers;
  • confess and receive communion.

Even if the priest does not require it, it is advisable to take such steps. The duties of godparents require involvement in the Church. Therefore, from this moment the deliverance of the recipients themselves from sinful slavery can begin, the beginning of their new life in Christ and with Christ has been laid. Only then is it possible to fully fulfill the duties of a spiritual mentor.

In an Orthodox church, a woman must wear a skirt that covers her knees and cover her head. A man must wear trousers and no headdress.

Difficult choice

To choose a girl for the role of godmother, you can contact an ordained priest or simply an experienced priest. Most often, a week before the christening, the priests talk about the sacrament itself, what things need to be purchased, and about the important role and mission that the chosen new parents bear. In the end, the most important thing when choosing a godmother is not the question of her status in society, but the topic of religion. It is important that the godmother is a believer and baptized.

The godmother is obliged to buy an icon of the saint with the girl’s name and a special fabric called kryzhma. The best kryzhma would be a completely new white cloth, symbolizing the purity of the little girl. It is believed that in the future the baby’s mother will carefully store this fabric and not show it to anyone.

A child can be baptized after 8 days from birth, but it is important to consider that a woman who has given birth cannot enter the temple for 40 days from birth.

What should godparents have during a christening?

To perform the Sacrament of Baptism, a priest only needs a cross and a shirt; everything else is a tribute to tradition.

Most often, godparents prepare:

  1. Orthodox pectoral cross - a symbol of the cross on which Jesus Christ sacrificed himself. The child will wear it from the moment of baptism, so you need to choose a comfortable size and not traumatic. The length of the rope or chain also matters: if it’s long, a child can get entangled.

  2. White baptismal shirt - the white color symbolizes the Transfiguration: Jesus Christ on Mount Tabor appeared before the disciples in the radiance of white light. The person being baptized is also transformed during the Sacrament, and the white shirt is a visible image of this transformation. She should dress easily.
  3. A diaper or towel in which the baby is wrapped after immersion, the so-called kryzhma. She is also a symbol of a new, clean life.

These items are kept throughout life as a shrine. There is no need to wash the kryzhma: if a child gets sick, you can cover the baby with it so that it will help him recover faster.

There are no strict rules about who prepares what for baptism. Different localities and parishes have their own traditions, and they may differ from each other. You need to agree in advance who is responsible for what.

The child’s parents can prepare everything they need themselves. Things sewn or knitted will retain the warmth of the hands and love of the one who created them.

What else to consider before Baptism:

  1. An important question concerns the cost of baptism. The Sacrament of Baptism, like all other Sacraments and rites of the Church, is performed free of charge. As a sign of gratitude, you can donate a certain amount to the temple. You can find out its size at the arrival or determine it yourself.
  2. Usually the child is given a certificate of Baptism, the names of the child and his adoptive parents are written on it, so their documents may be needed.
  3. You need to find out whether it is possible to photograph the Baptism process; not all priests allow this.
  4. The sacrament lasts long enough, the baby will need ordinary care products.

Baptism procedure

Baptism takes place in the temple itself or in a special baptismal room, which can be a separate building. In fact, these are two separate Sacraments, following each other: Baptism and Confirmation.

The entire procedure lasts about 40 minutes. All this time the baby is in the arms of the recipients, they hand him over to the priest when the ritual requires it.

Godparents, who can be spiritual parents for boys or girls, can familiarize themselves with the Baptism diagram to imagine how everything will happen:

Stages of the Baptism procedureActions taking place in the temple
Order of announcement:
  • Three prohibitions against unclean spirits
Special prayers of “prohibitions” are read over the person being baptized.
  • Renunciation of Satan
The recipient, on behalf of the baby, loudly renounces Satan three times.
  • Combination of Christ
One of the godparents reads the Creed for the baby.
Sacrament of Baptism:
  • Blessing of water and oil
The priest reads special prayers for consecration, first water, and then oil (oil)
  • Immersion in the font
The recipient receives the child after the font in Kryzhma. The priest puts a cross on the child.
  • Vestment of the newly baptized
The recipients put the baptismal shirt on the baby
Sacrament of Confirmation:Parts of the body are anointed with myrrh, thus giving the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
  • Procession around the font
Godparents with candles and a baby in their arms walk around the font three times.
  • Reading the Gospel
They listen to the Gospel with candles in their hands.
  • Washing away the Holy Peace
The priest washes away the remnants of the world.
  • Hair cutting
The priest cuts off some hair from the baby's head in a cross shape, which he wraps in wax and lowers into the font. This is the first sacrifice to God and a sign of submission to Him.
  • Churching
The priest walks around the temple with the baby in his arms, and the boys are still brought into the altar.

It is advisable to give the child communion for the first time the next day.

The sacrament of Baptism is the first sacrament that a Christian receives. Without it, the beginning of a new life with Christ and in Christ is impossible, and, therefore, salvation is impossible. A newborn child has not yet done anything wrong, but he inherits the sinful nature of his first parents. He is already on his way to death.

During Baptism, in an incomprehensible way, a person is cleansed from sin, dies to it and is born again in purity, receiving hope for salvation and eternal life. This is possible only in connection with the Lord. The Body of Christ is called the Church.

According to its wise arrangement, the Sacrament of Confirmation follows immediately after Baptism. A person receives the mysterious gifts of the Holy Spirit, which will act invisibly in him and strengthen him in his desire to live according to Christ.

Godparents, who can guide boys and girls on the path to eternal life, take responsibility for whether they go forward or stay put. The sacrament of Baptism so far only places the child at the beginning of this road.

Is the magical, magical effect of Baptism possible without faith? The answer to this question is given by the Gospel: “According to your faith, be it done to you” (Matthew 9:29). Where there is true faith, there is no need for superstition.

Superstitions

Often, when choosing future godparents, mom and dad ask themselves the question: is it possible for an unmarried girl to baptize her first girl? This is due to folk signs and superstitions, which have nothing to do with Orthodox teaching. For some reason, it is generally accepted that an unmarried godmother gives her happiness to her goddaughter. These are, in Russian, “grandmother's tales.” “According to your faith, be it done to you” - this is the correct attitude towards all signs and superstitions. “If you don’t believe, it won’t come true,” said the holy Venerable Seraphim of Sarov about bad omens. If a girl believes with all her soul that she and her goddaughter find common happiness during the Sacrament, then that’s exactly what will happen. You can say to yourself out of spite: “In this way I call on God’s blessing for my own happy marriage and motherhood.” And, believe me, this is exactly what will come true if you truly believe. So, is it possible for unmarried girls to baptize girls? It is possible and necessary if you approach your future title responsibly.

What to give to a godson or goddaughter?

A christening gift should have a spiritual meaning, be useful for the further upbringing of the child in Orthodox traditions and remind of the day of spiritual birth.

It can be:

  • cross;
  • icon;
  • christening shirt and towel;
  • Gospel and other spiritual literature;
  • A silver spoon is a baby’s first spoon, a “tooth gift.”

Many interesting gifts are sold in church shops. It's not about the cost, but about the spiritual value of the item.

Girl's christening: rules and signs

Baptism is an important event for a family. The church accepts a little girl into its fold. From now on, she is not alone, but always in the company of her personal Guardian Angel. How to do everything right, what rules and signs to follow at a girl’s christening?

This can best be explained in the temple that the parents chose for christening. Moreover, the details differ from temple to temple: what clothes are allowed to be worn, whether godparents can not receive communion in the last 10 days, and so on.

But they won’t tell you about signs in the temple; the Church is wary of them. The people, however, preserve them and pass them on from generation to generation.

Proper christening

The rite of baptism symbolizes a person’s joining to God, his renunciation of the forces of evil and the transfer of his soul under holy protection. Of course, you need to do everything right! There are not many strict rules, if not followed, no christenings will take place. But there are more than enough individual subtleties!

Church rules

The priest will explain everything, but it is better to be informed in advance.

For a girl's christening you will definitely need:

  1. God-parents;
  2. ready name;
  3. cross;
  4. baptismal dress and kryzhma.

Everything is the same as for a boy (but, of course, the name is a girl’s). Even the baptismal clothes for boys and girls are not very different: a white dress or a shirt with a minimum of decoration.

  • Godparents must be adults, capable, unmarried, of the same confession as the future goddaughter (Orthodox in the case of baptism into the Orthodox faith), people of strong moral principles.
  • The girl's name is chosen according to the calendar. Preference should be given to the saint who impressed with her deeds and virtues. The priest will have his own recommendations, and it is good luck not to argue with him about the name.
  • It is better to choose a silver cross for a girl. Definitely new and consecrated. Those sold in the church shop are already illuminated, while the store ones will be blessed immediately before baptism.
  • Kryzhma is a special diaper in which the baby is wrapped after the bath. As a rule, the godmother purchases it along with the dress. Special baptismal sets with kryzhma and clothes are sold.

For a girl's christening, special attention should be paid to the choice of godmother. She will serve as an example and spiritual mentor, support for her goddaughter.

Optional moments and rituals

Ask your parents how they baptized you? Are there any family traditions?

Besides:

  1. It’s good if the godmother prepares the kryzhma, and the godfather prepares the cross.
  2. Contrary to popular belief, it is possible for a pregnant woman to be a godmother, but it is difficult: in church you will have to stand for a long time and hold the child in your arms.
  3. The baptismal water on the girl’s face should dry on its own - for good luck.
  4. Let the baptismal dress be new, and not inherited from your sister. The same clothing supposedly strengthens relationships between children, but also promises illness for one child if another gets sick.
  5. It is believed that a godmother’s first godson should not be a girl - otherwise there will be failures in her personal life. Some people adhere to this rule, others don’t, the consequences don’t happen all the time.

Signs familiar and unusual

On the day of such a big event, everything matters. You can try to predict the fate of the girl by carefully observing how the christening went, and also attract happiness with some rituals.

Common

  • If a child cries during a christening, this is a good sign.
  • The baptismal dress and kryzhma should be stored. If you wrap your child in them to sleep in the first days after baptism, he will be calm and peaceful.
  • It is not good if the priest drops objects and confuses words during the ceremony.
  • It is not customary to widely announce that a family is going to baptize a child. He will be under better protection if unnecessary people do not know when the ceremony will take place.
  • After church, it’s better not to go anywhere, but to go straight home. This way the Guardian Angel will remain strong.

Rare and interesting signs

  • If a girl is passed over the church fence and brought into the house after baptism through the window, she will be healthy. Bringing it in through the door means, on the contrary, weakening it.
  • Getting caught in the rain during a christening is a sign of joy.
  • A girl sneezing during a christening is not good.
  • It is necessary to count the money on the day of christening so that the child grows up in prosperity.
  • When the family has left for church, those remaining at home should not open the door to anyone until the relatives return with the baptized girl - so as not to let trouble in.
  • Knitting, sewing, or making preparations on christening day is a bad omen.
  • If several people are baptized in a church at the same time, and moreover, they have the same names, this is unfortunately.

Christening as a holiday

The ritual in the church is just the beginning. It is equally important to properly organize the feast after.

  • Fun doesn't have to be noisy. Otherwise, the girl’s life will be hectic.
  • Drinking alcohol for godparents is a bad sign.
  • Putting a cup of water on the window during a feast means providing your goddaughter with an easy life in this world.
  • In order for the girl to grow well, the godmother must take the gingerbread from the table, put it on a high shelf and announce: so that the goddaughter grows up so big!
  • You need to finish all the food on the plates so that the girl grows up beautiful.

Traditional dishes for christenings: sweet porridge with milk and butter, pastries, sweets. Pies, chicken dishes - with a bang. If there are more children, then it’s good to bake a cake. You can even design it in the form of a cross so that the purpose of the holiday is visible.

It is a very bad omen to serve pancakes at a christening. Pork is also not recommended.

What to give for a girl's christening according to signs

Ideally – icons, spiritual books and films. While the girl is little, she will not appreciate books, but later they will come in handy. Also traditional gifts are silver jewelry, spoons, and rattles.

This is from the godparents. Guests can give toys and beautiful clothes. It is a good sign if the gift doll is in the form of a child, and not an adult woman. The child does not like dolls - the signs do not object to toy books, paints and construction kits for girls; development is always a good foundation for a happy life.

A memorable gift - a set of elegant scarves and hats.

Can a pregnant woman be a godmother?

There are no obstacles for a woman to become a godmother.

It is necessary to evaluate whether she has enough love, kindness and opportunities for two children: her unborn one and the adopted one. Not only spiritual and prayerful help is required from godparents, but also effective help, requiring strength and time.

Is it possible to refuse godparents?

A child cannot refuse such godparents. Godparents may change for the worse and stop fulfilling their responsibilities towards their godson or goddaughter. In such cases, you need to teach the child to pray for their correction. This will become for him a lesson in Christian love and mercy.

If parents still need help in the spiritual upbringing of their child, they can find a pious, church-going person and ask him to take on the responsibilities of a godparent, but he still will not be considered a godparent. For such an agreement it is necessary to obtain the blessing of a priest or confessor, if you have one.

Who does the ban apply to?

The following people cannot be godparents:

  • girls under 14 years of age and boys under 15 years of age;
  • monks and nuns;
  • people with mental illnesses;
  • married women and men;
  • the child's parents;
  • Catholics, Muslims, atheists.

By the way, the Church does not allow godfathers to marry. Only an Orthodox Christian can be a godfather. He must be ready to constantly take his godson to church and observe his Christian upbringing.

It is impossible to change the godfather after the sacrament of Baptism has been completed. But if he has changed significantly for the worse, the godson’s family and the godson himself should pray for him.

Is it possible to baptize a child for normal upbringing in the faith?

There is no such thing as rebaptism in the Orthodox Church. A person is not born twice, either physically or spiritually, and Baptism is a spiritual birth in Christ.

In order for a child to be raised in the Orthodox faith, the adults around him must live according to the canons of this faith and be an example in a pious Christian life.

The responsibility that falls on godparents is great. Their mission goes beyond the time-bound nature of earthly life. Godparents are those who can be guides to the Kingdom of God for boys and girls.

Is it possible to baptize a girl first?

If you were offered to become a godmother, most likely you remembered the sign and wondered whether it was possible to baptize the girl first. As for men, that is, godfathers, no superstitions “stuck” to them, which is not surprising - it is women who tend to believe signs and act depending on whether something can be done according to folk wisdom or not. There are many customs and mysterious signs associated with baptism and religion in general. By the way, when you become a godfather, you must take care of the child, instruct him and, of course, give gifts. Now let's figure out whether it is possible to baptize a girl first and what the risks are.

It is believed that a girl cannot be baptized first if the godmother is not married and has not given birth - supposedly, she will never get married, because the girl-goddaughter will “take away” her happiness. Another version says that, on the contrary, a girl can take over the fate of her godmother, so you need to choose those who are happily married and generally satisfied with their fate. Very often there are girls who believe that if their first godson is a boy, then their own family life will be very happy. Such persons refuse to baptize the girl first if they are offered, which can seriously offend the child’s parents.

On the other hand, it is stupid to believe in omens and popular rumors and refuse such an honor as becoming a godmother to a child. Baptism is a sacred rite, and superstitions are invented by people in an attempt to justify their own failures or because they have nothing better to do. Not a single church minister will ever tell you that you cannot baptize a girl first, because the church and superstitions have nothing in common, especially the Lord God and omens. Therefore, do not refuse a request to baptize a girl for fear of not finding happiness. Baptism itself carries exclusively positive energy, and nothing bad can happen to you.

Interestingly, in Northern and Western England the question “can a girl be baptized first?” arises for a completely different reason. There is a belief that if a boy and a girl are baptized at the same time and the girl is baptized first, she will “take” all the hair from the boy’s face, who, in turn, will have a face without hair - a mustache and beard - all his life. Doesn't this seem stupid to you? The sign about the loss of family happiness has as much meaning as the bearded girl from the English superstition.

What do you think? Would you baptize the girl first? Who was your first godson?
