  • Proclus the Mourner

Proclus the Mourner

Old Slavonic folk holidays harmoniously combine elements of pre-Christian pagan beliefs and church Orthodox rituals. An example here is the folk festival Proclus the Mourner. It is celebrated every year on July 25 (Old Calendar on July 12). According to the church calendar, at this time the memory of the martyred brothers Proclus and Hilary is honored.

The brothers lived at the turn of the 1st and 2nd centuries AD. in the Greek city of Kalypta. They were artists and also painted the basilicas of Christian monasteries and churches.

At this time, the Roman throne was occupied by the pagan emperor Troyan, whose first decree instituted mass persecution of Christians. Proclus and Hilary were famous masters: their frescoes and paintings decorated many Christian churches.
